THE FIRST HOB ARTICLE EVER, WRITTEN IN 2020

I turn 17 in May. So I guess it's safe to say that I’m kind of a pro at this whole teenager thing. I have absolutely loved everything about my teenage experience, even though it was nothing like a high school coming of age movie. The past four years I have learned so much about myself and about friendships. I have faced wins and losses, heartbreaks and recoveries, but looking back on everything, I wouldn’t have done anything differently. I am so thankful for each experience that has shaped me into the girl I am today. I think the number one thing that I have learned throughout my 4 years of teenage glory, is that the right mindset can change your world. My mindset shift definitely changed mine. I honestly feel like my whole life changed, once I began to make the most out of what I had. My high school experience was far from perfect, but I feel like during my junior year I pushed myself to try new things and change my perspective. I decided that I was going to push all of my fears aside and just go for it. Honestly I never had that amount of courage before, to do what I want without constantly worrying what other people thought about me. But the sudden spike in my confidence came from surrounding myself with people that have ambition and were consistently setting goals for themselves. I began to think to myself,”If they can do it, I can too”. Everyone in my circle achieves so much, and every day they aspire me to strive for more. When you are with people who think that the sky's the limit, you begin to believe it.

Once you hang with people who think that the stars are the limit, you begin to believe it. The people I began to surround myself with showed me that I could be anything, and create anything that I wanted. My “teenage dream” for every girl is that she finds a group of people that uplift, support, and inspire her, because the people you surround yourself with can heavily affect your world. And I am so grateful for everyone that inspires me to keep going every day, because they showed me that the stars are just a pit stop along the way to my final destination.

SLIM AARONS “Attractive people, in attractive places, doing attractive things'' was iconic photographer Slim Aarons’ motto. Over the course of his career he captured the lives of the upper class social elites, in the most beautiful way possible. He was welcomed into their homes and gatherings to photograph what it was like to be rich in the 50s’, 60s’ and 70s. Despite the fact that Slim Aarons photographed many rich people, in the beginning of his career he spent a lot of time taking photos of people living in war. After he finished covering wars, he made it his mission to rebrand himself. This inspired him to shoot people who lived lavish lifestyles. Even though Slim Aarons is severely underrated, he still has a major impact on photography we see today (see next page).

When I was younger, recess was my favorite time of day… until one day. I was sitting near the jungle gym, my favorite place on the playground, when this boy ran up to me and said, “What is that on your arm?” I simply told him it was my eczema. Eczema creates these dark spots on my arms which are noticeable. He continued to make fun of me because I had these spots. “You have a disease!” He exclaimed. Then the worst unimaginable thing happened.

He touched my inner arm and ran away. Later, another kid approached me during recess and told me the boy who touched me earlier had created a touch called, “The Alainah Disease,” similar to “cooties,” he said. His words may not seem important to you, but his comments and that one day in elementary school created years of insecurity for me.

My insecurities have always been my forearms/arms because of my eczema. I've always hated them. In the warmer months, I would wear jackets to cover the fact that it was there. I will never forget expressing to my friends how eczema made me feel, how I hated my arms, and how I really felt when people saw this trait about me. My friends convinced me that I think about my insecurity more than anyone else. Their support always made me feel better and showed me that I am beautiful regardless of my dark spots.

Owning your differences is key to feeling confident.

Remember that it is okay to be different. If you walk around feeling bad about the things that make you different, it will make it more noticeable. Lately, I have been owning my forearms. I wear shorter shirts to showcase my shoulders. I feel better when I do this, and even though some people stare I always try to remind myself that if I like my skin then thats all that matters.

THE SKIN I'M IN TERRIAH WILLIAMS

I attended a predominantly white private Christian school when I first noticed how different I was. One day when drawing our self-portraits, I drew myself as best as I could. I tried to make my drawing extra special. If you ask me my drawing won refrigerator privileges. Once I started coloring everything in, I grabbed my brown crayon and colored in my skin and I got the question, “Why is your skin so dark? I can’t see your eyes or your smile.” I was never able to answer. I looked around at everyone else’s drawings and immediately noticed something that hadn’t ever come to mind. Everyone used apricot for their skin, while I used brown. That’s when I realized that I was different from everyone else, I was the only black girl in my class.

It wasn’t until I got to middle school that my skin color became my biggest insecurity.

I was called “charcoal girl”, “monkey”, “African booty scratcher," and many other awful names. I was always so uncomfortable taking pictures with certain filters or at night because of my fear that someone would say they can’t see me or “where is Terriah?” I was always the darkest of all of my friends. While they were laying in the sun, I would be somewhere in the shade avoiding getting darker. I used to look in the mirror and cry because I hated how I looked.

After years of hating my skin, I started seeing more dark skinned women being represented on TV, like Lupita Nyong’o, Normani, and Duckie Thot. Seeing them embrace their skin made me think if they can do it why can’t I? I started doing morning affirmations, telling myself my skin is beautiful and to love myself. The less I worried about how dark my skin is, the more confidence I gained. I started to feel more free because it was like a weight lifted off my shoulders. I started laying in the sun more, because who doesn’t love the feeling of sun on their skin! I have accepted that this is my skin, and it’s never going to change so why not embrace it and show it off. I am more outgoing and happy now than I have ever been. I love how my skin glows in the sunlight and how soft it is. During middle school, I would have never sat in the sun for hours to watch how my skin glowed in the sun. Instead, I probably would have been inside crying over something I could never change. Our queen Lupita Nyong’o once said, “I cannot run away from who I am, my complexion, or the larger society, and how they may view that.” Like Lupita, I have chosen to love myself just as I am.

Shantelle Hyslop is taking the world of mirrors by storm. During the pandemic, she started her own company LottaBlobs and started selling a line of funky mirrors (Pictured on Pages 44 and 45).

How did you discover your love for sculpting?

What advice would you give to someone who wants to turn their passion into a business?

It was by sheer luck! The idea popped into my head one morning while I was on furlough in 2020. I started working on the concept soon after and by the end of the day I had designed my first prototype!

I think it's super important to exercise your skills and even if you don't have the funds to do everything you want at the start just be as creative as possible because you'll be surprised how far it can take you!

So far, I'm most proud of being featured in all the print and web publications. One of the main publications being Vogue! When I was younger I took so much joy and inspiration from them so it's crazy that I'm now on their radar! It means a lot to me.
