BOOK OF THE MONTH

spread kindness, not covid. MADISON COCHRAN

Once again, we’ve reached the time of year where just about everyone is either really stressed out about school, really excited for the holiday season, or both. If you’re a member of the first group, like me, and you’re reading this on your scheduled break from studying for your Calc final, I’m sure you’d agree that you could use a little extra kindness right now. And with all the extra stress the pandemic is bringing this holiday season, it’s incredibly important that we make an effort to give our friends and family some support. Unfortunately, the pandemic has made spreading kindness in the usual way somewhat difficult. As the cases rise, it’s getting harder to safely get together with friends, and it’s even harder to keep a positive attitude. But with a little creativity, there’s a lot you can do this year to let your friends know you’re thinking of them.

1

Check-In A simple text to your friends asking

2

how they’re doing or letting them know that you’re thinking of them goes a long way to showing them you care.

Bring Back Driveway Chalking When we first went into lockdown, I remember drawing on friend’s driveways with chalk, or bringing people cookies. I know it’s a little cold this year to be outside doing chalk, but think about dropping off some hot cocoa and a holiday card. It’s a super

3

safe way to brighten up someone’s day.

Give a Personalized Gift

I usually only bring out the sappy stuff for birthdays, but since it’s a little difficult to get out to all the stores right now, think about giving your friends and family a

semi-homemade gift this holiday season. Memory jars are super easy to make and something your friends will keep forever.

A CHAT ABOUT FASHION

In October, I launched my latest passion project: The Beverly Chat with Camryn Bryant. Over the past two months, I have had the opportunity to interview the coolest people ever. Last month, I interviewed Chanika Stallworth, a hairstylist, an original Brown Couture Girl, and fashion expert. In this conversation, we chatted about current fashion trends, New York Fashion Week, and the fashion capitals of the world. Chanika's love for fashion is palpable throughout the interview. It was so exciting to converse with someone who has such an extensive knowledge of the fashion industry. She is truly a role model and in my

HOSPITAL HAPPINESS By: Lillie Pannell

I burst through the front door eager to tell my dad my Halloween idea. I ran over to him shouting words in his face at a million miles a minute still soaked from my water practice only 20 minutes before. He glanced at the clock “8:00pm, Do you think we will make it?” “Not if we don’t get going” I said. I snatched the bowl of candy from our kitchen table and threw on a sweatshirt. In the car, I explained this idea in further detail. “These people probably never get to spend time with their families on the holidays. So, let’s make it special.” We devised a plan. The first stop was Kroger so we could grab more candy. I ran in ready to pursue yet another passion of mine. I discussed my idea with the employees. They helped me find an array of candy and items for some special people. From there, we made our way to Northside Hospital. Big bowl of candy in hand. I started to get nervous, because this was either the best idea I had ever had or they wouldn’t let me in because it was quite a strange sight. I entered through the doors with confidence and walked right up to the security guard. I used my extensive vocabulary to convince him that he needed to let me into the doors. I said “Sir, I know this really isn’t allowed but think of how happy it would make these people?”

My talking seemed to work. I walked through the doors with the guard behind me. He was the first to choose. I then had all the eyes of the entire staff pointed at me. I explained that I love Halloween and my goal in life is to make holidays special for everyone. I wanted them to feel appreciated for their hard work and the love they had given me over the years. They swarmed me like bees. Hugs and laughs were shared. One man approached me with tears in his eyes. He told me about how he misses trick or treating every year with his kids, because of work. This gave him a taste of what it is like. That alone gave me the feeling that the mission was a success. As I was leaving the door, an older lady came up to me and tapped my shoulder. She was homeless and had been for a while. She said that food was what she had been praying for. I handed her the bowl and gave her a hug. That night at the hospital changed me forever. I realized that many things are out of control and bigger than me. It is what I do with what I have for others. I exited those doors and cried in the parking lot due to the joy that had filled my being. Treat people with kindness forever and always.

NUMBERS NUMBERS By: Syrai Graham

From saying or hearing countless phrases such as, “He’s making a lot of money,” “She paid off her $40k car in full,” and “They have millions of views on this video!” we’re taught that joy has one thing in common: a numerical value. We assume that because of someone’s assets,
