Fortunately for us, when relationships produce unprecedented conflicts, we learn a lot. Each friendship, and romantic relationship that doesn’t work out, teaches us lessons for when new opportunities come around. In the most “unprecedented” way, 2020 taught me a lot about myself and about other people. The lessons I learned will prepare me for the future. Now that it’s a new year, we have officially broken up with 2020. This year, I look forward to

Vibrant. Beautiful. Funky and Fun. Over the past few months, nails with exciting color palettes and designs have been very trendy. Nails are such exciting forms of self expression. They allow people of all ages to show how they feel through wearable art. In the nail world there has been a birth of a modern version of the French manicure. Instead of the normal white tip nails, we have started experimenting with more colors and new moderations of the shape.

GOAL GIRLS
new year RESOLUTIONS BY: MADISON COCHRAN
I feel like there’s always a lot of pressure on us around the new year to reflect deeply on all of our flaws and “fix” them. We write vague goals like: “Lose weight. Get better grades. Make new friends.” The way we are taught to set our goals inherently focuses our desired result around physical changes. I set my goals this way every year and I never end up reaching any of them. I’ve come to realize that this is mostly because the best goals aim for lifestyle changes. In layman’s terms, this means that the best goals come with a long-term action plan, and hopefully one that is realistic and flexible. That means your New Year’s Resolutions should look less like a grocery list and more like an outline. For your main bullet point, go ahead and write down that vague physical change you want to make. Then, underneath that, write three lifestyle changes you’re going to try to implement that would lead to that change. So, if your broader resolution is to “get better grades,” maybe your lifestyle changes could include things along the lines of creating a study schedule, reaching out to your teachers regularly with questions, and making a list of all of your assignments every day. Trying to make lifestyle changes instead of just physical ones should also help you to be kinder to yourself in the goal-making process. I feel like our “goals” are often punitive. Instead of trying to live healthier and more productive lifestyles, we find opportunities to criticize ourselves. So, if your New Year’s Resolutions aren’t solely meant to make you happier with yourself, forego them this year. You should only ever try to change for yourself.

CULTURE The growth, the light, The pain, the fight, We love, We fight, We hurt, we cry, He paid the price You'll be alright. - Peng Black Girls Remix
The Peng Black Girls Remix by Enny and Jorja Smith, is the new Black girl anthem. It invites Black girls of all different complexions, curl patterns and area codes to unite under the one thing that connects us: our race. Being a black girl in any area of the world warrants a certain set of experiences. It all starts in a place of despair. Many black girls walk through a phase of their life feeling disregarded, ignored, and unwanted, because of their skin color. After this period, they grow and learn to love themselves despite how the world views them. Once the world finds a way to suppress them, the vicious cycle of being beaten down and having to pick themselves up again repeats. This phenomenon is captured throughout the song. It artfully highlights the beauty and the hardships of the "Black girl experience". In today's world, it’s an act of courage to openly love the thing about yourself that others try so hard to diminish. Songs like this matter, because Black girls deserve to have music that corresponds with their experiences.
