editors letter Welcome to the June Edition of House of Beverly. I just wanted to start this edition off by saying thank you to everyone that took the time to read my first issue. Even though I just started this journey of my life, it has been one of the most rewarding experiences ever. In this issue I wanted to take the opportunity to encourage other girls to find their passion and start doing what they love. This edition is dedicated to Summer Love, but not in the form you would imagine. Because to me, summer love is all about doing what you love and turning it into a part of your lifestyle.

xoxo,

FIND YOUR

PASSION Now that school is out, it’s even more important than ever to find something to do with your free time. I recommend finding a job or starting your very own passion project. Need more encouragement? Keep reading for 4 reasons why you should start your passion project this summer.

It’s fulfilling I believe that there is no better feeling

than doing what you love. Whether it’s making funny videos online or volunteering to help a group of kids in your community. This will bring you joy after you finish and you will feel more excited about your future.

It keeps you focused Yes, summer is a great time to kick back and relax but if you’re like me and you like to stay productive, starting a new passion project is a perfect way to stay focused throughout the summer. It gives you a goal and something interesting to focus on, so you won’t get too bored during break

$$$ If you’re craving to start your own company or get a job, there’s no better opportunity than the present. You can use your summer to begin producing your resume, and even start to make your own money.

It's a confidence booster

Around a year ago, when I first started building my brand I immediately began to feel my confidence going up. It taught me that I was capable of creating so much, and you are too. It’s like the rush that you feel after a great workout session (before the soreness kicks in). It gives you a feeling of accomplishment that you are capable of getting things done.

Around a year ago, my mom texted me a quote on Instagram that said,” Sis, the post isn't going to get his attention. Go write your business plan." I looked at my phone and had a realization that was like one of Raven's visions from the Disney sitcom, That's So Raven. It was my sophomore summer, and I was facing the typical case of a High School heartbreak. I was posting selfies to snapchat and instagram in hopes that the guy I was crushing on for years would message me. And the quote my mom sent was right, absolutely none of them caught his attention. It's the typical high school phenomenon. You post a picture online, and spend hours by the phone waiting for the person you're interested in to swipe up. Let’s be honest, crush culture is nothing like what you see in the movies. Today teens have to deal with the social expectation of finding a high school sweetheart. We spend our high school experience longing for the validation that comes with the idea of being in a relationship. We spend most of our teen years waiting to feel noticed or loved because we grew up in a world where we were taught likes, comments, or things of high monetary value determine our worth. So naturally, we turn to high school boys, for our dose of temporary confidence. We have become a nation of girls that spend nights crying themselves to sleep while listening to CTRL by SZA and waking up to chastise their appearance in the mirror because the boy of our "dreams" did not give us the recognition we craved or deserved.

I found myself placing so much value in a guy's opinion that I forgot it was my opinion of myself that mattered the most. It was like a never-ending cycle of Elle Wood's breakup in Legally Blonde. Instead of getting accepted into Harvard, eventually, I got House of Beverly. I'm not trying to say that starting a business or rerouting your life plan is the cure to a case of unrequited love but instead of searching for a boy to convince you of your worth, I suggest investing your energy into yourself .Taking the time to work on yourself, to love yourself, to know yourself is remarkably more fulfilling than receiving a "wyd" text at 11:00 pm. I challenge you to use your summertime to invest in yourself. Work on a passion project or something simple like repeating positive affirmations in the mirror. This summer, work on becoming the best version of you, not to catch the attention of some guy in your thirdperiod language arts class but for yourself.

WHILE I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION I’ll never forget when I realized I was black. It was the year President Obama ran for office and after the election I proudly wore my Obama t-shirt to school. That day my enthusiasm was met with my classmates throwing food and markers at me. That’s when it hit me that I was the only black kid in the room. I began to believe that white-ness was like puberty. I waited to undergo a metamorphosis so my skin could look like everyone else's, but that didn’t happen. I was stuck in my melanin and things began to get worse from there. In third grade, my closest “friends” came up with the wonderful idea of measuring my nose with a ruler every day only to point out that my nose was bigger than their long and pointy European noses. They convinced me that I had some type of deformity. Rulers don't lie, so my only line of defense was to agree with them. I cried about that for weeks. In the fifth grade, my class learned about the Klu Klux Klan for the first time, a group of guys created a klan of their own and went around the school saying racist slogans. In the eighth, a group of white guys told me that I was “nothing except a N*****”. A few months ago I went to my high school’s basketball game, and my school’s white student section called the opposing team’s black cheerleaders roaches, and shouted the N-word at players when our team’s star player got fouled. Racism never stopped, you’ve just stopped paying attention. I’ve spent all of my life as a black girl in a white world. And the underhanded racist comments are exhausting, but nothing is more gut wrenching than seeing that a black person has been killed for no reason. Dear white America, you have to do better. The fight against racism can’t just be a trend on Instagram, because for black people it’s our reality. We don’t have the luxury of only thinking about racism when it’s convenient for us. It’s something that we have to live with every single day. So since the topic of racism is fresh on your mind, and while I have your attention, hold your racist friends and family accountable. “It’s not enough just not to be a racist anymore, [ you] must be anti-racist.” - Angela Davis.
