Special Thanks From the COO/GM

Dear Hound Ears Club Members,

Happy New Year! I sincerely hope that all of our Members had a safe and healthy holiday season surrounded by friends and family.

The winter months give our team some time to grow their specific skill sets through continuing education and certification programs. It’s also a time where they can be recognized for the hard work already demonstrated through their careers, and I’m happy to report on a bit of both.

During my interview process earlier this year, the GM Search Committee and I spoke at length about the Club’s investment in its human resources. I’ve believed for some time that a Club’s succession plan can almost always be found within its existing employees. By committing to the growth of its employees, including investments in their continuing education, recognition of their accomplishments and rewarding positive performances, a Club can grow their next generation of leaders from within. This growth provides a Club with a far more certain path to success than it would have if recruiting a new leader from the outside only when needed.

By the time a Club promotes its next leader from within, the Club has earned the employee’s loyalty and has developed their sense of purpose through hands-on experience. This practice communicates a message of upward mobility to our entire team and helps in our recruitment, as we can speak of the growth opportunities that are available to those who put forth the effort. Over the last few months at Hound Ears, we’ve embraced several opportunities to elevate existing employees into new leadership positions.

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Chef Nick Davis as our Executive Chef. Nick first joined the Hound Ears team in 2016 after working at Linville Ridge and Colonial Country Club. Nick has served us as Interim Executive Chef over the past two seasons, showing substantial growth each year. His great leadership and creativity have elevated our dining experiences, and we look forward to witnessing him continue to flourish in this key role. In the coming months, Nick will be furthering his culinary accreditation through education with the American Culinary Federation (ACF). Additionally, Nick will be visiting several other mountain clubs this off-season, working alongside their chefs to gain new perspectives, ideas, and techniques. This dedication to provide our Members with innovative dining experiences is much appreciated.

I’m also excited that Assistant Golf Professional Spencer King has been promoted to the position of Head Golf Professional. Spencer has been an integral part of the Hound Ears Club family since 2020 and has been working in the golf industry since his days playing collegiate golf at Florida Gulf Coast University. Spencer immediately complimented the positive outlook of Head Professional Ty Harris and Director of Golf Peter Rucker, while carving out his own indispensable footprint in the Hound Ears golf experience. Since joining Hound Ears, Spencer has proven to be the approachable, friendly, and genuine friend that we value so dearly at our Club.

Spencer’s dedication and aptitude for teaching and his love of the game makes him the natural choice to fill this significant position.

Rindy Kacsmaryk started her career with Hound Ears in 2017 when she was hired to work in our Mail Room. She quickly became noticed for her kind interactions with our Members and Owners and, when a Customer Service position became available in our Property Services office in 2020, Rindy was an obvious choice to assume that role. Rindy quickly developed a great friendship with our Property Services Office Manager, Valda Church, learning the responsibilities of both roles. When Valda announced her retirement after 39 years with Hound Ears, Rindy’s experience with the position along with the exceptional relationships she has continued to foster with our Owners, singled her out as ready for the next step in her Hound Ears career. Congratulations to Rindy on her promotion to Office Manager of Property Services.

Allen Storie and I are both very proud of our master mechanic, Eric Church, who has achieved a remarkable milestone in being named the Turf Equipment Technician of the Year by the Turf Equipment Technicians Association of the Carolinas. This prestigious recognition highlights Eric's exceptional skills and dedication to maintaining our equipment, which has a direct connection to the outstanding condition of our golf course. We are incredibly proud of Eric's achievement and grateful for the invaluable contribution he’s made to Hound Ears Club over the duration of his 40 years with us.

As we celebrate the accomplishments of our promoted team members, applaud those who are pursuing additional education, and honor Eric’s well-deserved award, I’d like to recognize the collective dedication that makes the Hound Ears Club team truly exceptional. It is the passion and commitment of our staff that create the warm and inviting atmosphere that defines the Hound Ears experience.

During these coming winter months, our Club will continue to facilitate opportunities for careerspecific education for many of our current employees. This mindset of investment in our people will continue to help us retain the very best talent in the region and will keep the Hound Ears Member experience exposed to current best practices and trends in the club industry.

I extend my sincere congratulations to all our team members on their well-deserved achievements. We look forward to witnessing the continued growth and success of our club under their leadership. Wishing you all a joyful and prosperous winter season.

Warm regards,

Valda Church Retires

From Hound Ears Property Services

After 39 years of service, one of our precious longtime employees, Valda Church is retiring from the position of Office Manager in the Property Services office at Hound Ears Club.

Valda graduated from Watauga High School in 1974 and Swainsboro Tech in Georgia. In 1984, she returned to her mountain roots with her baby daughter, Ashley, and got a job at Boone Construction, a division of Hound Ears, through her dad Jack Garland, a local painting contractor. A lifelong resident of the area, Jack owned land along 105 and became good friends with Harry Robbins, one of the founders of Hound Ears Club. Valda fondly tells the story that Harry said to her dad, “I am going to start this and I want you to go in with me. It’s a very small investment.” Her dad replied, “Harry, I’m not going to. It will never make it.” He ate those words many times. Jack painted many of the Hound Ears houses designed by architect Claus Moberg and he was a favorite of Lois Claughton who had the flag lowered when Jack passed. Valda’s mother Juanita Garland was well-known for her famous sourdough bread and sold as many 300 loaves per week, often dropping off samples for the office to enjoy.

When Boone Construction closed, Valda was able to move into a position that opened up in Property Services. Valda shares that she and her colleagues sincerely appreciated the updates to the Property Services building. There were times in the previous building that she would put her foot under the wheel to stop her chair from rolling down the slanted incline of the office floor.

Over the years, Valda has enjoyed numerous wonderful relationships with both members and staff as many special people have come and gone, including former “mainstays” like twin brothers, Wendall and Finley Church, who once ran the ski slope and whose wives worked with flowers around the property. When asked if she skied, Valda said, “No, but I should have … but my parents didn’t want me breaking my neck!”

Valda shares she has been very blessed by working with amazing men and women in Property Services. She states, “The guys are the kind of people who would walk through fire for you. … And, Rindy and I hit it off immediately and I cherish our friendship that will last a lifetime. Even though I have not known Sarah [Tscherpel] for very long, it has been a real pleasure getting to know her.”

Valda plans to spend her retirement enjoying time with her daughter and her family which includes three grandchildren, Kale (9), Eli (6) and Sadie Grace (4). “Going anywhere with them is an adventure,” says Valda. She also enjoys walking in the mountain air, card making, going to the beach, “any beach” but especially Ocean Isle, and spending time in her church community of Oak Grove Baptist.

Hound Ears will miss you, Valda! Thank you, Rindy Kacsmaryk, for stepping into the role of Office Manager in 2024 and to Sarah Tscherpel for joining us as Customer Service Representative.

HOUNDEARSCLUB

60thAnniversaryDiamondJubliee

In 1963, Harry and Grover Robbins purchased land from Claude Shore to build a golf course and ski resort, working with their brother Spencer, who at the time was the manager of Pine Needles Club and Golf Course at Southern Pines. Spencer worked with the golf course architect, George Cobb, to design the course. Architect Claus Moberg was brought in to design chalets and the clubhouse. One sunny day, a casual comment from the landowner at the time, Mr. Shore, gave the club its unique name which has carried through the decades. “You surely can see the Hound Ears rocks today,” he said as he and the Robbins brothers looked up at the rock formations above the land purchase being discussed.

Ed & Lois Claughton along with Ed’s sister Susie and her husband Bob Schmidt buy Hound Ears Resort in 1988.

60th Anniversary - Did You Know?

Hound Ears has a song!

Hound Ears - Hound Ears

To the tune of New York- New York

You don’t have to roam

Just to call it your home

Be proud to be a part of it

Hound Ears - Hound Ears

Come up here and stay

Enjoy every day warm friendships are the heart of it

Hound Ears - Hound Ears

You’ll love to wake up every morning ‘cause it’s so nice

You’ll want to shout out and sing

It’s paradise

The cool mountain breeze comes down from the trees and blows your cares and woes away

In old Hound Ears

If you don’t like it there you won’t like it anywhere

You can’t compare

Winter Roads & Sidewalks

Winter is here and, with it, roads and sidewalks can become slippery at times. A light covering of frost can make your outside steps treacherous and you may not notice they are icy until it is too late. I believe everyone living in the High Country has taken a fall due to icy conditions at one time or another.

The frost on the trees can be a beautiful sight, but when you see this, make sure you grab the hand railing as you walk down any outside steps, in case they are covered with a thin layer of ice.

Plan your departure to ensure you have enough time to clear your car windshield of frost. If you don’t have an ice scraper for your windshield, you can buy one at the car parts stores. They are inexpensive and well worth the cost to remove ice which can block your vision.

Driving in icy conditions is difficult at best. Steering and braking are affected, not to mention getting out of your car and trying to walk across the parking lot. As you put your feet on the ground, test the surface before you stand up. Hold on to your door as you stand. Be careful if there is any loss of traction when you do this.

Remember, even a layer of slushy snow which is half melted on the road can cause your tires to lose traction. You may turn the steering wheel, but the tires might not respond. Reduce speed and be aware your breaking distance will increase. Always be on the lookout for black ice. It can be dangerous because sometimes it is invisible to the eye. It is a very thin layer of ice. Driving during extreme cold weather with any hint of moisture in the air should be taken with extra caution.

Winter Greetings Golf

Winter greetings from the Golf Shop. The golf course renovations are going wonderfully, and we are very appreciative of Allen Storie and his outstanding team, as well as Danny Young for his leadership on the project.

Our fall trip to Spain was fantastic. Marbella offered everything you could imagine - wonderful shops, great restaurants, world class golf, and beautiful scenery. Valderrama, host of the 1997 Ryder Cup, was certainly the group’s favorite.

Next up in 2024 is southwest Ireland. We’ll head to Killarney on September 8th for an eight-night stay and another experience of a lifetime, as Ireland offers world class golf as well. Reserved courses are Old Head, Waterville, Ballybunion, and Dooks. Many activities are planned for nongolfers as well. The trip has been well subscribed, but there are still a few spots available. For more information, contact Peter Rucker at peterr@houndears.com.

Golf Course Updates

Course Improvements Are Underway

The Golf Course restoration project for 2023-2024 is in full swing and progressing smoothly. Our Golf Course Maintenance team, along with Spence Golf Design, started in early November with the renovation of hole #14trimming trees, removing putting surface sod and surrounds and removing an unwanted green soil mix. USGA specific soils are being added to improve drainage, esthetics, and overall health of the green.

Sand was removed from bunkers for new liners and regrading. Sections of the cart path were removed for new paths to be laid in the spring.

After hole #14, the team moved to #9, where approach sod was removed along with unwanted soils that will be replaced with new soil for a firmer surface to improve playability. Hole #13’s renovation included much-needed drainage, green soil mix and rerouting the cart path. Bunkers on #13, #14, and #15 had new drainage measures installed with new capillary liners. #12 and #16 renovations are still in progress.

On the remaining course holes, aerification, topdressing, soil amendment and fertilizer applications were completed on tees and greens.

Navigating the Holidays with the 80/20 Rule: Finding Balance in Diet and Exercise

As the holiday season approaches, many individuals find themselves torn between the joyous festivities and the desire to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Balancing diet and exercise during this time can be particularly challenging, with an abundance of tempting treats and busy schedules. However, there's a powerful principle that can serve as a guiding light in this situation— the 80/20 rule.

The Pareto Principle, also known as the 80/20 rule, suggests that roughly 80% of effects come from 20% of causes. In the context of diet and exercise, this principle encourages a balanced approach, allowing room for indulgence while prioritizing healthy choices. Applying the 80/20 rule means striving to make nutritious choices 80% of the time, while allowing for flexibility and enjoyment during the remaining 20%.

During the holidays, the abundance of festive treats and indulgent meals can be overwhelming. Instead of succumbing to the all-or-nothing mindset, embrace the 80/20 rule for a more sustainable approach to nutrition.

Aim to fill your plate with nutrient-dense options like lean proteins, vegetables, and whole grains. These foods provide essential vitamins and minerals, supporting your overall well-being.

Allow yourself to enjoy holiday treats in moderation. By savoring small portions mindfully, you can satisfy cravings without derailing your entire diet.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Sometimes, our bodies can mistake thirst for hunger, leading to unnecessary snacking. Drinking water can help you feel more satisfied and curb overeating.

Maintaining an exercise routine during the holidays can be a struggle, but the 80/20 rule encourages a balanced perspective that prevents guilt and burnout. Strive for consistency in your exercise routine, even if it means shorter sessions. Regular physical activity contributes to overall well-being and can help counterbalance indulgences.

Fitness, continued from page 15

Embrace the holiday spirit by incorporating enjoyable physical activities. Whether it's a family walk, ice skating, or dancing at a holiday party, find ways to stay active that align with the festive season. Schedule your workouts in advance to ensure they don't get overlooked amidst the holiday chaos. Treat exercise as an essential part of your routine to maintain balance.

By adopting the 80/20 rule, you can navigate the holiday season without feeling deprived or overwhelmed. Remember that perfection is not the goal —finding a sustainable balance is.

Clubhouse Updates

As season 2023 draws to a close, we need to recognize and thank, heartfully, Belle and JC. Both Belle and JC will be graduated from App State on December 15, 2023. JC will be moving back to Charlotte and seeking out a role in accounting and Belle will be heading off to Morocco in February 2024 to work with the Peace Corps. Both stepped into roles to help F&B continue to elevate in July when we had changes in our leadership. I cannot thank them enough for their dedication and hard work. I wish them both enormous success with their future endeavors.

Allow yourself to indulge in holiday delights while maintaining a commitment to your overall well-being through mindful eating and consistent exercise. This approach not only helps you stay on track during the holidays but sets the foundation for a healthy and balanced lifestyle year-round.
