During our recent golf events meeting, the committee wanted to reiterate our policies as theypertaintogolf courseetiquetteandpaceof play. Please take a moment to review the followinginformation.
All players are expected to learn and observe the fundamentals of golf etiquette. Excessive noise, the throwing of golf clubs, or profanity will not be permitted. Persons using the golf course should do their part to make a round of golf at Hound Ears Club a pleasant experience foreveryone.Herearesomesuggestions:
1. Do not waste time. Anticipate the club or clubsyoumayneedandgodirectlytoyourball. Alwaysbenearyourballtoplaypromptlywhen itisyourturn. If aplayerisdelayedinmakinga shot, it would be courteous for such player to allow“readygolf,”meaningtoplayoutof turn. 2. Thetimerequiredtoholeoutonandaround the green is a chief cause of slow play. Study and clear the line of your putt while others are doingthesame.Bereadytoputtwhenitisyour turn.
3. Pace of play should not exceed 4 hours for 18 holes of play. During inclement weather or ‘cart-path-only’restrictions,paceof playshould not exceed 4 hours and 15 minutes for 18 holes of play.
a. Slow play is discouraged. In the interest of all, playersshouldplaywithoutdelay.Noplayer should play until the players in front are safely outof range.
(Golf Updates, continued from previous page)
b. If a foursome or other group of players fails to keep their place on the course and loses more than oneclearholeontheplayersahead, theymustallow the following group to play through. Do the same whenyoustoptosearchforalostball.
c. Continued slow play by players will be noted and the golf staff will attempt to improve such players’ skills to enable them to complete play within a reasonable time as established by the Director of Golf. If such efforts do not result in the required completion time, the Club may limit the playing of such players to times other than prime playingtimes.
d.Allplayerswhopauseplayafterplayingnine(9) holes, for any reason, must occupy the next tee before the following players arrive at the tee or they will lose their position on the golf course and must getpermissionfromthestartertoresumeplay.
4. When approaching a green, park your golf cart on the cart path on the best direct line to the next tee. This can save about twenty (20) minutes per round. Never leave the golf cart in front of the green where you will have to go back to get it, while the following players wait for you to get out of the way.
5. When playing of a hole is completed, leave the green promptly and proceed to the next tee without delay. Do the scoring for the completed hole while the others in your group are playing from the next tee.
6. “Cutting-in”is not permitted without permission of the starter or the Golf Shop. Under no circumstances are players permitted to start play from residences without approval of the Golf Shop or the starter, and if approved in no event should cutting in delay anyone already playing on the golf course.
7. The golf rangers are obligated to report excessively slow play and breaches of golf etiquette totheDirectorof Golf forappropriateaction.
8.Observegolf maintenancerules.Fixotherplayers divotsandballmarks.
9. With respect to music played from golf carts, volume must be maintained at a level not to exceed the appropriate vicinity of your cart.
10. With respect to resident and Member walkers on the course, walking on the course is permitted before 8:30 am and after 6:30 pm. Please note that golfers always have the right of way and be vigilant in terms of safety.
Is it chipping or pitching? I suppose this is determined by the length of the swing and the loft of the club. Let’s dig into the specifics.
A good rule of thumb when pitching or chipping is, minimum airtime and maximum roll time. This means getting the ball in the air to the closest predictable surface and allowing the remainder of the shot to roll out to the hole. Often this is achieved by using a lower-lofted club.
The basic chipping motion asks for a slightly open club face to the target and narrow stance with the majority of weight on the front leg. While swinging backward and forward, learn to swing equally on each motion while maintaining weight on the front. The best motivators of the swing are the shoulders while keeping the hands soft.
The pitching motion is similar with some notable differences. Often the swing is longer, thus more hinging of the wrist. Additionally, if you need to hit a higher and softer shot, loft is added by reducing shaft lean and the swing may be even longer still. It’s still a good idea to swing the shoulders with soft hands while keeping the weight on the front foot.

July 14: After a great start to the season, the Hound Ears Summer Book Club continues in July with The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb. The author is a native of Fayetteville NC and has a degree in music education. He lives in Washington DC, where he has been a public and private school music educator and performs with orchestras often. The Violin Conspiracy is his first novel and is followed by the equally popular Symphony of Secrets.
From Amazon: “Ray McMillian is a Black classical musician on the rise—undeterred by the pressure and prejudice of the classical music world—when a shocking theft sends him on a desperate quest to recover his great-great-grandfather’s heirloom violin on the eve of the most prestigious musical competition in the world.”
