The Fourth of July week was truly something special perfect weather, a full calendar of events, and what felt like every corner of the property buzzing with activity. With over 1,300 people on-site and no real "Plan B" for weather, we couldn’t have asked for better conditions. But beyond the sunshine, what stood out most was the incredible sense of community.
Participation was at an all-time high not just for our fireworks, but across the entire week The Youth Fishing Derby had its strongest turnout in recent memory, Family Fun Day was filled with laughter and games, and the Community Dog Show brought out not just our furry companions but entire cheering sections of proud owners, kids, and neighbors. It was a joy to see so many children and grandchildren enjoying the Club by all accounts, family participation was as strong as we've ever seen it.
Our Men’s and Women’s Member-Guest tournaments were equally memorable. Despite a few scattered showers, the camaraderie and spirit of these events reminded us why they remain such beloved traditions
Updates & Greetings!
They’re not just golf tournaments they're opportunities to showcase everything we love about Hound Ears to those we hold dear
Looking ahead to August, the energy shows no signs of slowing. From the Club Championship and Hound Ears Open to racquet sports fundraisers, golf clinics, demo days, and live music events there’s truly something for everyone. We’ll also see the return of Tiffany’s Furever Family Tennis Round Robin, an event that blends sport with heartfelt purpose
I'm looking forward to our next round of Trivia Night, this time at the pool on Sunday August 10th! We'll end the month with another special night by the pool, our first White Party, an elegant affair with wine tastings and delicious bites served with style.
Thank you for being the heart of Hound Ears. Your enthusiasm, your support, and your presence are what turn great events into lasting memories
Warm regards, Joseph McGuire, CCM, CCE General Manager / COO

Golf Tips for August
Uneven Lies for Right Handed Golfers – Alignment
Ball Above Feet
· Stand vertical and center balance on the slope.
· Choke down on the club
· On severe slopes, use higher lofted clubs
Swing more around using mostly upper body.
· Aim to the right to allow for pull.
· Position ball in the middle of stance
· Swing relaxed and easy.
Ball Below Feet
· Stand closer to ball than normal.
· Flex knees, bend from the hips and center balance on the slope
· Swing more vertical (up and down).
Aim to left to allow for push.
· Position ball in the middle of stance.
Uphill Lies
· Position weight and ball on uphill foot
While keeping into the slope, swing around using mostly upper body. If lie is severe, anchor on the right leg.
· Allow swing to go into slope.
· Aim to the right a bit to allow for pull
Downhill Lies
Position weight on downhill foot and play ball back in stance.
· Position body to the left with a wider stance.
· Allow shoulders to angle down with the slope
· Swing more vertical (up and down), keeping weight on downhill foot OK to use lower body, allowing weight to turn to downhill foot.
· Although it is rarely a good idea to attempt to “lift” a ball, it is particularly true in this situation.
Please note our inclement weather policy for golf activities:
A long horn blast indicates all golfers are to immediately take shelter Three horn blast indicates golf activities can resume. The golf shop will not send staff out in hazardous weather to inform golfers of the above procedures. It’s the responsibility of members and guests to adhere to these procedures. Racquet Sports
By Eri Latimer Director of Racquet Sports
We’re thrilled to share that our courts have been in full swing this season! Over 90 tons of Har-Tru have refreshed our courts, which are now playing with just the right amount of bounce arguably better than ever. Meanwhile, our Pickleball Courts have been buzzing with activity, which has been a big “dill” for us!
The month kicked off with our Tennis July 4th Round Robin (held on the last day of June), followed closely by the Pickleball Mountain Round Robin both events full of fun and friendly competition.
A major highlight was the Sixth Annual Grieco Senior Invitational, a multi-day senior men’s doubles tournament sponsored by the National Senior Men’s Tennis Association (NSMTA). Internationally known player Noble Hendrix, working alongside our Racquet Sports Team, brought together a remarkable group of seasoned players to compete on our courts. Participants traveled from South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and across North Carolina, competing in age divisions 70, 75, and 80.
Representing Hound Ears teams were: Ford Robinette, Jimmy Tate, Randy Whitmeyer who are all Equity Members, Danny Carlson (a national champion – ranked #1 in 70 years old & over division), Junior Huffman, Ed Wagner, and HEC Tennis Only Program Players, Noble Hendrix, Joe Simon, Lee Kermode, Bruce Stanley, Rich Seader
Racquet Sports Updates!
We were also honored to welcome Keith Richardson, ranked top 50 in the world back in the days and played against John McEnroe and other world top players, a member of the NC, SC, and Appalachian State Tennis Halls of Fame.
In recent years, the invitational has been dedicated to the memory of Hendrix’s former doubles partner, the late Ralph Grieco. Ralph’s love for tennis and photography brought him to countless tournaments, and his legacy continues through this event Proceeds benefit the Ralph Grieco Tennis Fund for the NSMTA, which helps support young players and promote the sport.
We rounded out July with the Hound Ears Open in both Tennis and Pickleball We’re proud that this event supports the Appalachian Regional Healthcare System Fundraiser.
Looking ahead to August, we’re excited to host the Tiffany’s Furever Family Tennis Round Robin, an annual fundraiser in memory of Tiffany Kermode Brown, daughter of Lee and Cindy Kermode. This event benefits the Avery Humane Society Participants must be at a 3 0+ level, and we welcome donations for the shelter such as pet food, towels, blankets, newspapers, tennis balls, and toys Donations can be dropped off at the Racquet Sports Center from 8 AM–2 PM in the days leading up to the event.

Fitness Trend Alert: Rucking – The Walking Workout with a Twist
Rucking is walking with added weight usually in a backpack or weighted vest Once a military training technique, it’s now one of the fastest-growing fitness trends because of its simplicity and powerful benefits. Rucking adds resistance to a regular walk, making it a full-body workout. This extra weight boosts calorie burn, strengthens muscles and bones, and even improves posture Best of all, it’s easy to do anywhere no gym or expensive equipment required
Start light, with 5–10 pounds, and gradually increase the weight as your body adapts. Keep your posture upright and aim for a 20–45 minute walk a few times a week. A weighted vest or snug backpack works perfectly.
People who ruck report feeling stronger, less stressed, and more energized For women, it’s especially effective for improving bone density and supporting overall wellness.
Rucking combines cardio and strength training in one simple activity. It’s a practical, affordable way to get fit while enjoying the outdoors. Ready to give it a try? Grab a backpack, add some weight, and hit the trail!
POOL SAFETY
As we celebrate another memorable summer at Hound Ears, we want to thank everyone who helped make our Fourth of July festivities so enjoyable. We’d also like to take a moment to share some important reminders regarding pool safety, especially during these busy summer weeks.
There are no lifeguards on duty. Parents and guardians are fully responsible for supervising their children at all times. Diving is prohibited, and we ask you to observe posted signage and help ensure others do the same.
Please supervise your own children and prevent them from playing rough or aggressive games in or around the pool Safety depends on all of us paying attention and being considerate of others in the water and your attentiveness is the most effective tool we have to ensure the wellbeing of all members and guests.
Thank you for helping make Hound Ears a safe and welcoming place for everyone to relax and enjoy.
