I am pleased to congratulate Peter Brennan, Libba Gaither, and Charlie Murray on their election to the Board of Directors at our recent Annual Meeting of the Membership. I look forward to working with them as we continue to shape the future of Hound Ears Club. I also extend my deepest gratitude to outgoing Board Members Marie Blake, Bob Hatley, and Tom Fisher. Their time, enthusiasm, and support of the Club have been truly admirable Each has given generously of their energy and talents to make Hound Ears an even better place to belong, and we are all grateful for their contributions.
The Stormwater Remediation Project, which was approved by our Members earlier this year, is now underway. Work has begun with the replacement of the clubhouse gutters, and more extensive activity will follow over the next three
months as we install subsurface drainage and replace retaining walls along Dogwood While this work is necessary to protect and preserve our assets for the long term, it will create periods of traffic disruption, occasionally limit access to the Clubhouse main entrance, and limit Clubhouse parking at times. I will continue to provide weekly Friday email updates to keep you informed on what to expect in the week ahead
Lastly, we hope you will join us for the “Fall Farewell” Party on Saturday, October 11th. It will be a wonderful evening to gather with friends, enjoy fantastic food and drink, dance the night away with the band MVP, and celebrate the beauty of the fall season here at Hound Ears.

AsrequestedattheannualPOAmeetinginJuly, belowisacompilationofsuggestionsfromtheAmericanRed Cross and AARP for emergency preparedness in the home. Hound Ears Management will be reviewing emergencyevacuationproceduresinthecomingmonths.EnjoythebeautifulfallseasonatHoundEars!

There is a distinction between a “Handyman” and a “General Contractor.” Understanding the difference between the two is essential for evaluating homeowner submissions, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining consistent review standards.
Handyman
• Project Type: Small, non-structural repairs and general maintenance tasks that do not require a permit.
• Cost Limit: Typically limited to projects valued under $40,000.
• Licensing: No state-issued license required for these smaller jobs.
• Scope of Work: May include fixing a loose cabinet door, replacing a light fixture, or assembling furniture
• Operation: Works independently or with a small team.
• Pricing: Commonly charges an hourly rate.
General Contractor
• Project Type: Oversees larger, more complex projects such as home additions, major renovations, or new construction.
• Cost Limit: Required for projects valued at $40,000 or more, often involving structural work.
• Licensing: Must be licensed by the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors. You can verify a North Carolina License here: https://nclbgc org/
• Permits: Responsible for obtaining all necessary building permits.
• Oversight: Coordinates specialized subcontractors (e.g., plumbers, electricians) to complete the project.
• Operation: Manages a team of workers and subcontractors
We encourage our owners who hire handymen or general contractors to understand the difference between the two, and to verify licenses and permit requirements. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to oversee all compliance with Hound Ears Architectural Review Guidelines. The homeowner must ensure all work requiring Watauga County permits be properly permitted prior to commencement of the work. Work being performed that requires but has not been issued a permit by Watauga County, will be stopped and the homeowner will incur a penalty of double the original permit fee.
To download relevant permits, go to the ARC page under My Club or My Community: https://www.houndears.com/My Club/ARC for members or https://wwwhoundears com/My Community/ARC for non-member residents
For questions regarding permits, contact Darryl Eggers at deggers@houndears com or call 828-963-0764

This year’s disco-themed Member-Member brought high energy, great competition, and plenty of sparkle. It was a groovy and happening time for all! Many thanks to Alice Brady for her thoughtful planning and hard work and to her event committee and Barb Swiatlowski from the Golf Shop who helped create both the disco-made afternoon on Day 1 and a pink-themed luncheon on day 2 in honor of the High Country Breast Cancer Foundation. Veteran’s Guest Day

A beautiful morning welcomed veterans and guests to our 14th Annual Veterans’ Guest Day! We’re grateful to everyone who came to honor and celebrate our veterans. Suzanne Livesay, Executive Director of the Appalachian Theatre of the High Country, opened with the National Anthem and the Pershing Rifles of ASU Army ROTC raised the flag, with help from our own Alex Locklear Willson Hooks, App State music student, performed a moving trumpet solo.
A special thanks to Head Golf Pro Spencer King for leading the Pledge of Allegiance and managing the event. Another round of thanks to our sponsors: BlueCross BlueShield NC, Blue Ridge Energy, First National Bank, Hopscotch Primary Care Boone, LifeStore Bank, New River Light & Power, Peak Insurance Group, Piedmont Federal Savings Bank, Skyline National Bank.
Final Thoughts
From crowns and disco balls to groovy putts and heated match play, these tournaments celebrated the spirit of competition and community that make Hound Ears so special Congratulations to all our winners and heartfelt thanks to the members, organizers, and volunteers who made each event a success.

What a fantastic season! Thanks to the 15 tons per court partial lift, our courts were in the best condition ever, earning praise from members and guests alike.
A heartfelt thank you to all members who played and helped make HEC Racquet Sports a fun and friendly community, especially through weekly Ladies’, Men’s, and Mixed events.
The weather was unpredictable to say the least this summer, but we were fortunate that we did not have to cancel any of the Special Events due to weather
Tennis Ladies’ weekly events remained strong both in participation and in the variety of play levels. The Men’s weekly events grew tremendously, sometimes filling four courts at a time! It’s been wonderful to see the gentlemen enjoying themselves and building camaraderie on the courts. Many new tennis players joined this season as Hound Ears Equity Members, and it’s a pleasure to provide an environment where they can meet others and form new friendships at HEC
Pickleball Men’s weekly events consistently filled both courts. Sunday Pickleball Mixed weekly events also had amazing attendance this year. Pickleball Open Play, led by our Pickleball Pro Elizabeth Barry, continues to attract players consistently.
These weekly sessions are a great way to meet other pickleball enthusiasts and gain valuable tips from Elizabeth If you’re new to pickleball or not yet comfortable signing up for the weekly events, Elizabeth is available for lessons. With multiple teaching certifications and a friendly, approachable style, she’s one of the nicest instructors you could ask for.
Thank you to everyone who supported our Racquet Sports fundraisers! Together, we raised over $7,000 for the Avery Humane Society, which operates entirely on private donations.
We hope you enjoy a wonderful fall and winter and look forward to seeing you on the courts next spring!
The Racquet Sports Pro Shop is now closed.
Court Hours:
Tennis Courts: Open 8 AM – 8 PM through Friday, October 17 (weather permitting). Please reserve your court.
Pickleball Courts: Open year-round (weather permitting) Please reserve your court
Lessons:
Available until courts close. Schedule by texting: Tennis: Eri Latimer at 828-719-8467

By Michael Darling Director of Fitness
As the summer comes to a close, I can’t help but smile thinking back on all the fun we shared together. This season was packed with adventure, laughter, and plenty of memories that will carry us through until next year
We had not just one, but two amazing Kids Camps in June and July and the energy was nonstop! From hiking, climbing, and fishing, to exploring Grandfather Mountain and becoming “Plant Detectives,” our campers stayed busy discovering and trying new things. They baked pizzas, hit the golf course, played pickleball and tennis, and of course, made a splash in the pool The best part was watching friendships grow and seeing the kids’ excitement each and every day.
And then there was our Family Field Day always a favorite! Families teamed up (and sometimes faced off) in classics like the water balloon toss, tugo-war, sack race, blindfolded race, belly ball race, and the ever-tricky egg-and-spoon race. The cheering, laughter, and playful competition made it such a special day.

One of the highlights this season was our monthly hikes, May through October We’ve built quite the group of regular adventurers who are always ready to lace up their boots and explore. Each hike offered something new whether it was tackling the ever-changing mountain weather or navigating trails still showing the effects of Hurricane Helene. The mix of challenge, camaraderie, and breathtaking views made every hike memorable.
Our fitness classes were buzzing with energy and great attendance all season long From Strength & Stretch to Yoga, Pilates, Cardio Sculpt, and Water Aerobics, it was inspiring to see so many members staying active, having fun, and cheering each other on. On top of that, members took full advantage of massage services, and personal training was busier than ever a true testament to the commitment our community has to wellness and self-care.
Thank you to all of our families and members who joined in the fun this season you’re what makes these programs so special. I can’t wait to do it all again next year and see what new adventures await us here at Hound Ears!
