European sheet music notation, like in the Real Book, can not truly convey what the real swing feel sounds like. We read the notation, but, base our interpretation on listening and copying the masters and innovators in jazz.
In the Afro Brazilian religion, Ketu Candomble, if you take the JINKA / BRAVUM bell part, and add a beat, the feel of that groove is exactly how you should interpret "eighth notes" when reading sheet music for jazz. If you know the origins, and investigate its properties, you will swing harder. This JAZKET information, is brought to you by: Bons Ritmos Productions. 8 IT'S TIME FOR A PARADIGM SHIFT IN HOW WE PERCEIVE THE HISTORY AND ORIGINS OF JAZZ
“The splang a lang cymbal jazz ride can be found embedded in BRAVUM. That is the whole swing era ...” Andrew Scott Potter
Afro Brazilian Ketu Candomble has powerful parallel evolution to grooves, phrasings in solos and compositions in Jazz history. This is one more reason to go back and look again, at the master innovators, and understand where they were coming from, and the concepts they were working with.

WINNING SPINS
A master of hard bop and bebop drum ming, Al dives into the genres on Sonny Rollins’ “Pent-Up House” and Miles Davis’ “Half Nelson,” both sterling examples of tight quintet work, with Al’s kinetic sticks kicking and prodding the theme and solo turns from the horns and Kevin. Another quintet foray into hard bop is Joe Henderson’s “Punjab,” Al’s kit shadowing the theme and spicing up the solos, espe cially Nicholas’ trumpet foray. Two tunes reduce the quintet to trio size. McCoy Tyner’s “Blues on the Corner” surprisingly excludes piano and becomes a showcase for Chris’ tenor sax with walking bass and Al’s atmospherically bluesy drums. Herbie Hancock’s “Alone and I” is a ballad for piano trio, and Al’s one brushesonly track. Chris plays soprano sax on “Anastasia,” a Latin-tinged ballad by Al wherein soprano and trumpet alternate, then share, the melody lead. Nicholas’ con tribution is a lively boogaloo entitled “Six,” featuring a four-bar, six-times-repeated theme before each solo turn, the boogaloo feel enhanced by Kevin’s switch to Fender Rhodes. Chris’ original is a ballad, “Open Plans,” giving Al a chance to showcase how brushes and sticks can alternate to add variety to solo turns. Kevin’s composition, “Beat,” builds from a semi-rubato opening through a suspended rhythmic feel with brushes and mallets under trumpet and tenor, culminating in mid-tempo swing behind Kevin’s piano solo and the closing theme.
The opening title track, Jonathan’s “Poetic,” has tempos changing as drums crackle and snap under solos from guitar, alto sax and keyboard. Jonathan’s other tune, “Denim,” is propelled by a martial beat with tribal undertones, a springy melody from guitar and sax, and a march ing guitar solo before the alto sax takes it out on a crescendo. Godwin’s “Give Us This Day” slows things down with a sinewy sax melody shadowed by guitar, and Jonathan picking up steam during a pounding sax out-chorus. There’s a trance-like feel to the most memorable number, Godwin’s “Now and Forever,” slow syncopated drums under alto sax constantly repeating a hyp notic phrase over rising drum beats, the same phrase reprised by Taber’s keyboard as Jonathan segues into a drum solo to close the track. The album ends with a quartet (no sax) tune, Taber’s “South,” Jonathan exploring cymbal sonorities behind guitar and keyboard. Al Foster leads his quintet at Smoke Jazz Club on Sept. 1-4. Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead are at Smalls Jazz Club on Sept. 7. and The Side Door on Sept. 9.
DRUMMERS BORN A HALF-CENtury apart, Al Foster and Jonathan Barber, one reflecting influences from over 50 years, the other solidifying a recent group concept, are featured here on new albums. Reflections , Al Foster (Smoke Sessions), finds Al leading a stellar quintet with Nicholas Payton, trumpet; Chris Potter, tenor and soprano saxophones; Kevin Hays, piano and Fender Rhodes; and Vicente Archer, bass. The recording’s repertoire pays tribute to some of the many iconic musicians Al has worked with over the last 50 years: Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, Joe Henderson, and Herbie Hancock. Al’s two originals honor Monk, and Chris, Nicholas and Kevin each contribute one of their own tunes. The spirit of Monk reverberates through the opening number, Al’s “T.S. Monk,” from its quirky theme through Kevin’s right-out-of-Thelonious piano through the horn solos redolent of Monk eccentricities. Al reveres Monk, having first played with him in 1969, and his drumming here recalls his work with the master. The album concludes with Al’s sly “Monk’s Bossa,” a piece posing the ques tion what if Monk wrote a bossa? Kevin’s piano intro again is pure Monk, and the horns balance their solos between graceful bossa flair and angular lines.
Poetic, Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead (Jonathan Barber self-release), presents the drummer’s interactive quintet in a brief (33 minutes) recital of eight orig inals by four of the group’s members. The band consists of Godwin Louis, alto sax; Andrew Renfroe, guitar; Taber Gable, Fender Rhodes; bassist Matt Dwonszyk; and Jonathan on drums. The group has a distinctive collective sound, electric instru ments (guitar, Fender Rhodes) weaving and meshing together, alto sax mixing and matching, and Jonathan’s drums in con stant motion, rolling and roiling in free form as Matt keeps a semblance of pulse from the bottom.

MONHEIT:
JANE MONHEIT IS infectiously happy. And with good rea son. Even before she graduated from Manhattan School of Music, Jane placed second in the 1998 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and signed for a recording contract. When she was only 22, she released her first CD, Never Never Land (N-Coded Music) accompanied by a roster of jazz greats including Ron Carter, Bucky Pizzarelli, Hank Crawford, and Kenny Barron. In reviewing the album, AllMusic critic David Adler wrote that her voice was “as close to flawless as a human can get.” She was in demand, and her happiness has not waned. Even during the pandemic, she found pleasure. “It was great to spend so much time at home with my husband, son, two dogs and two cats,” she gushes. “But of course I needed to play music, so that’s what we did. At least once a month, we streamed a performance.” Also during the pandemic, she released her first recording in five years, Come What May (Club44), a compilation of stan dards that show off her wonderful voice and pay homage to some of the great singers who have influenced her. “Of course, there are Ella Fitzgerald and Judy Garland, but I also listened to a lot of Barbara Cook,” she explains. “And Broadway singers had a big impact on me, particularly Rebecca Luker, who appeared in some great shows such as The Secret Garden, Mary Poppins, and The Music ManWith.” her 2021 CD, she continued her superb, highly-praised recordings. Writing for Jazz Views, critic Nick Lea calls Come What May “a most welcome addition to the singer’s discography” and notes that he “cannot remember ever being disappointed by any of the vocalist’s albums.”

JANE Still Flawless and Infectiously Happy By Don Jay Smith

Laughing, she continues, “I am also in the middle of recording another CD which will come out in November. It’s my second Christmas album, entitled The Merriest (Club44) after the great June Christy song.”She quickly adds praise for her new label and then notes that she also plans to sing some Brazilian favorites at the Iridium. “I have always done a lot of Brazilian music. In addition to Antonio Carlos Jobim, my favorite singer from Brazil is Ivan Lins whose compositions always make their way into my shows.”
Reviews of the recording use the words “comfortable,” “polished” and “smooth,” and that is how Jane reflects on the expe rience. “I think that the older I get, the more comfortable I am sounding just like myself. By the time we got into the studio, the arrangements were well-rehearsed and polished.”
VOCALIST
Late last year, Jane started back out on the road and is looking forward to coming to New York with her trio including pianist and music director Michael Kanan. “When we play at the Iridium, the audience can expect to hear some things from the Come What May recording plus many of my hits and some material that I have not sung in a while.”Asshe elaborates, “I love playing duets with Michael and we definitely will do that in New York. It’s always spontaneous; we never plan the duet set in advance. Michael surprises me when he starts and it’s always something that I love. He knows me well which comes from working together for so long.”

Not only is Arturo Sandoval one of the most technically adept trumpeters on the jazz scene, he is also a bravura master of both bebop and Afro-Cuban music. A native of Cuba who was a founding member of the Cuban-jazz fusion band Irakere, Arturo joined Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nation Orchestra in the late 1970s and, with Dizzy’s help, defected to the U.S., where he became a citizen in 1998. Arturo’s dazzling skills on the trumpet allow him to play bebop à la Dizzy and to master Afro-Cuban music and rhythms and Latin American styles from salsa to bossa nova. He is, along with Wynton Marsalis, one of the jazz trumpeters who has also played and recorded classi cal trumpet concertos. Arturo was the subject of an HBO movie, For Love or Country, in which he was portrayed by Andy Garcia.

This month, the John Fedchock New York Big Band celebrates 30 years since the release of its debut album, showcasing his trombone work and arranging skills. Since 1992 John has received two Grammy nominations. Regarded as one of the most ver satile trombonists in jazz, he was called “one of the living masters of his instrument” by Hot House Jazz. At Smalls, he has trumpeter Scott Wendholt, saxophonist Walt Weiskopf, pianist Allen Farnham, bassist Ugonna Okegwo, and drummer Eric Halvorson. At Birdland, his New York Big Band—celebrating the anniversary and John’s birthday—includes saxophonists Mark Vinci, Charles Pillow, Rich Perry and Scott Robinson; trumpeters Tony Kadleck and Barry Ries; trombonists Keith O’Quinn, Clark Gayton and George Flynn; pianist Allen Farnham; bassist Dick Sarpola; and drummer Dennis Mackrel.

Eric Alexander, the late Harold Mabern’s prized student and a frequent collaborator with the pianist over several decades, has built an impressive career as one of the pre mier tenor saxophonists of his generation. Known for his big tone and lyrical treat ment of ballads, Eric is equally accomplished playing in bop, hard bop and post-bop settings, developing a wide-ranging repertoire reflected in his voluminous recordings. Eric currently co-leads a sextet with his frequent band mate Mike LeDonne, along with Vincent Herring, Jeremy Pelt, Peter Washington and Kenny Washington, soon to release a CD called The Heavy Hitters. Another pending new album, not yet titled, showcases Eric on alto saxophone with strings. For this show, Eric co-leads a quartet with pianist Mike LeDonne, bassist Mark Lewandowski, and a drummer TBA. KD

Founder Jon Krosnick—a lithe, precise and heady drummer—is also the originator of the acclaimed Lunar Octet. For this show, Charged Particles saxophonist Tod Dickow, pianist Greg Sankovich, and bassist Aaron Germain are joined by trumpeter Randy Brecker (brother of Michael), who has said of the CD, “Everyone is at the top of their Mike game.” Proceeds from this night go to the Michael Brecker Family Foundation for research on blood cancer, and a memorial scholarship.
The California contemporary jazz ensemble returns to New York City with a tribute to Michael Brecker, featuring new arrangements of compositions by the late tenor sax ophonist. It extends the group’s 2021 Summit Records CD, Live At The Baked Potato.

As dazzling a pianist and idea-maker as there is in current Latin jazz and beyond, Omar Sosa—a native of Cuba who is living in Oakland, Calif.—has not been as widely recognized as his immense talent deserves. His dozen CDs for the independent Otá label reflect his world travels all around Europe, Africa and the U.S., and mark his steady progress. Collaborations with a wide variety of musicians have defined his rest less soul. Whether solo, duo as in his recent offering with Marialy Pacheco entitled Manos, or in larger combos, Omar Sosa never ceases to amaze. Now, making a Dizzy’s debut, his Quarteto Americanos features woodwind veteran Peter Apfelbaum— remember his Hieroglyphics Ensemble?—Ernesto Mazar Kindelán on baby bass, and drummer Josh Jones.

Pianist Lenore Raphael began as a classical musician, performing at Carnegie Hall as a young prodigy, but switched to jazz upon hearing Oscar Peterson in concert. After studying with Barry Harris and Mike Longo, she went on to have an exceptional straight-ahead jazz career both as a player and educator. A Steinway artist, Lenore has been praised by critics, with All About Jazz calling her “the personification of swing.” And she has appeared at major clubs and festivals worldwide including Dizzy’s at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Blue Note, Birdland, London’s Ronnie Scott’s, Portugal’s Casa Da Música, and many more. She has received well-deserved recognition includ ing Grammy nominations and ASCAP Awards. Lenore appears with bassist Hilliard Greene and drummer Dwayne Cook Broadnax at the Millburn Library. DJS

Singing and playing piano are equal parts in Dena DeRose’s musical psyche. Her sunny voice and swinging keyboard artistry are on full display in this trio performance with drummer Sherrie Maricle and bassist Noriko Ueda. Dena has spent much of the last two decades in Europe, teaching jazz vocals at the Jazz Institute of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria, and Siena Jazz University in Italy. She returns each summer to teach at the Stanford Jazz Institute and play a few gigs. She digs into standards, new originals and material from each of her latest CDs, including Dena’s Ode to the Road (HighNote) at the Deer Head Inn, then hits the road for her hometown, Binghamton, N.Y., to perform Sunday evening at Atomic Tom’s. Jamie Baum is in the top echelon of jazz flutists and a compelling composer who draws from diverse influences, creatively blending them into unique works that defy catego rization. Doubling on flute and alto flute, Jamie recruits equally adventurous players who are up to the demands of interpreting her provocative music. Jamie is thrilled with her new group, which has played at Dizzy’s club this year, as they work on her latest challenging compositions. She hopes to record them in January. The Jamie Baum Septet+ includes the leader on flutes, trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson, Sam Sadigursky on alto saxophone/clarinet/bass clarinet, French horn player Chris Komer, guitarist Brad Shepik, pianist Gary Versace, acoustic and electric bassist Ricky Rodriguez, drummer Jeff Hirshfield, and guest vocalist Aubrey Johnson.

Named Best Clarinetist in the Hot House Jazz Fans Decision Awards, reedman Dan Levinson is both a leader and sideman, having performed with top artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Mel Torme, Dick Hyman, Bria Skonberg, Frank Vignola, and Vince Giordano. Acclaimed for his Benny Goodman tributes, Dan excels in all styles of early jazz from ragtime to gypsy, and has appeared on almost 200 CDs. Legendary producer George Avakian called him “a national treasure.” Dan opens the Morristown Jazz & Blues Festival co-leading James Langton’s New York All-Star Big Band with James on sax and vocals; saxophonists Will Anderson, Matt Koza and Mark Lopeman; trum peters Brian Pareschi, Mike Davis and Joe Boga; trombonists Jim Fryer and Harvey Tibbs; pianist Rossano Sportiello; bassist Rob Adkins; drummer Daniel Glass; and vocalist/guitarist Molly Ryan.
For trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, jazz is a birthright. The son of legendary pianist Ellis Marsalis Jr. and brother of Branford, Wynton and Jason, Delfeayo’s sharp and decisive style puts him in a league all his own. As a side person, Delfeayo has shared the stage with luminaries such as Art Blakey, Max Roach and Slide Hampton, to name three. Beginning with 1992’s Pontius Pilate's Decision, Delfeayo’s efforts as a leader show a creative mind that can swing, bop and stay on top of contemporary jazz. Delfeayo's most recent album, Jazz Party (2020), was met with critical acclaim, with All About Jazz stating, “this music has a constant smile on its face, beaming with Southern sassiness and exploding with exuberant force.” For his show at SOPAC, Delfeayo is joined by his quintet for a brilliant night of music.

“The singer who first impressed me,” says Champian, “was Dinah Washington, partly because Clark had recorded and toured with her, but also because I really was moved by her voice.” Some of the other singers she listened to and liked as she was growing up included Sarah Vaughan and Nat King Cole. Piano players who inspired the young Champian included Red Garland, Hampton Hawes, Thelonious Monk, and Art Tatum. But her favorite pianist, one whose repertoire she continues to play today, was Count Basie. After graduating from high school in 2003, Champian earned a degree at State University of New York at Purchase, where she studied with trumpeter Jon
PIANIST/SINGER CHAMPIAN FULton, who celebrates her 38th birthday September 12, wasn’t listening to Prince or Mariah Carey as she was growing up in the later 1980s and 90s. “I didn’t know much about or hear much rock music,” she remembers. “At home all I heard was jazz. My father (Stephen Fulton) was a jazz musician, and one of his best friends was Clark Terry,” the trum peter-flugelhornist.Terrywasan early mentor of Champian, and she fondly remembers that her first paying gig, as a ten-year-old pianist/bandleader, was at Terry’s 75th birthday party. “I was leading a quintet of kids, and after we performed, Clark counted out $50 for each of the band’s four other members, then counted out two fifties for me, saying that the leader gets double. And he told me that when I was paying the others, I should tell them how well they performed, or how I thought they could improve.”
Even at that early age, Terry was coaching Champian on how to become a musical leader. During that time, Champian’s family had moved from their home in Oklahoma to Iowa, where her father was Director of the Clark Terry Institute for Jazz Studies. The institute survived for only about three years, until 1997, when the Fultons moved back to Oklahoma. But Clark remained a formidable presence in the young Champian’s life, encouraging her as both a pianist and a singer.

By George Kanzler Faddis. She then moved to New York City and released the first record, Champian (Such Sweet Thunder), of what is now more than a dozen in her discography. And although she has worked mostly as a pianist/singer and small band leader in the last decade and a half, she also sang for a couple of years with the neo-swing big band, David Berger & the Sultans of Swing. “There’s nothing like singing in front of a good big band,” she declares. Asked if she prefers to be known as a pianist or a singer, Champian declines the choice. “I’m a pianist who sings,” she says. “Both are equally important to me. Sometimes a song will appeal to me for its lyrics, other times I’ll fall for the melody.”
For instance, on her Live from Lockdown (Champian Records), an album chronicling a tour she made with her father, the two do the Duke Ellington-Billy Strayhorn song “Satin Doll” as an instru mental, Champian declining to sing it. Asked about different formats, Champian says that the duo is the most challenging. “It leaves you wide open,” she notes. “There’s no place to hide. “We might revisit some tunes I recorded early in my career but have evolved as I continue to sing them,” she says. She’s looking forward to recording “Evenin’” which Count Basie did with singer Jimmy Rushing as the B-side to “Shoeshine Boy,” the famous Lester Young tenor sax feature.
MONHEIT...continued from page 13 FULTON...continued from page 19 doing piano and horn duos.” Besides part nering with her father’s flugelhorn, Champian has duetted extensively with Scott Hamilton’s tenor sax during her European tours. But these days she is concentrating on the classic piano trio format, joined in her working band by bassist Hide Tanaka and drummer Fukushi Tainaka. The first four days of September they are recording live during a gig at Birdland Theater. And, as she usually does, Champian is going to con centrate on standards from the American Popular Songbook.
On Facebook, there is a site that remembers the late Marian McPartland, with photos and memories of her long career in jazz.
A Moment You Missed by Fran Kaufman Hot House
The Upper East Side of Manhattan comes alive with jazz music every July, as 92NY’s Jazz in July takes root under the direction of its artistic director, pianist Bill Charlap. I’ve stopped by rehearsals for the past several seasons, and this year, I witnessed the rehearsal Bill was conducting with the young vocalist Samara Joy, winner of the presti gious Sarah Vaughan Jazz Vocal Competition in 2019. Here, Samara and Bill run through just one of the many tunes that they planned to perform the evening of July 26.
A review of her appearance in New York last year called her program “flawless” and “breathtaking.” Critics and audiences also observe “what a fun lady Jane is,” as Broadway World wrote. It is so true. Jane shares her emotions and her love for every one, particularly her family. “Like many,” she says with a smile, “I have had some landmark events in my life, but the two most important are marrying Rick Montalbano (who is also her drummer) and giving birth to my son Jack.”
Bill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links.
A live performance by Jane is always special so if you have not seen a Jane Monheit show, don’t miss this chance.
ANECDOTE BY BILL CROW
Jane Monheit appears at the Iridum on Sept. 9-10 with pianist Michael Kanan, bassist Neal Miner, and drummer Joe Strasser.JAZZ
In one comment, John Plante wrote that he was standing with Marian at one of the annual Alec Wilder celebrations at St. Peter’s Church in Manhattan, listening to what he called a “very self-important” female singer who was sharing her renditions of some of Alec’s popular songs. He said, “The lady had gone way over her allotted time slot and just kept going. Everyone was well mannered but beginning to become restless. Marian leaned over to me and said, ‘You don’t suppose they have one of those very large hooks back there, do you?’ I think that the outburst of laughter from me may have signaled to the singer that it was time to wrap it up.”
Champian Fulton’s Trio appears at Birdland Theater on Sept. 1-4; Arthur’s Tavern on Sept. 10; Jazz on Main on Sept. 24; Mezzrow on Sept. 25; and The Django on Sept 28. She clearly looks forward to performing because she encourages fans to send in their requests. As she explains, “If people send me requests ahead of time, then we can prepare them. It is so much better than trying to respond to shouts when we are on the bandstand. We work hard to put on the best show possible.”

–L.A.JazzScene “Tod Dickow is one of the best insaxophoniststheworld.”
The success of the group’s mission to honor Michael is due in no small part to the contributions of veteran San Francisco tenor saxophonist Tod Dickow. The sheer force and fluency of his lines seem to lift the entire band throughout their live set at the intimate Baked Potato in Los Angeles, while his passionate intensity and Breckerian authority immediately command our attention. Truly, he is a talent worthy of wider recognition.– Bill Milkowski “Tod Dickow has captured the magic and brilliance of Brecker.”
Michael Brecker’s Music Comes Alive: Tod Dickow, Charged Particles, and Special Guest Randy Brecker

On September 8, the California-based jazz trio, Charged Particles, will appear at Birdland with blazing tenor saxophonist Tod Dickow and special guest Randy Brecker, playing music from the quartet’s new CD, “Live at the Baked Potato!”, featuring the compositions of jazz superstar Michael Brecker. The band’s heartfelt tribute to iconic tenor saxophonist Brecker, who passed away in 2007 after a prolonged illness, is staggering in its authenticity and collective desire by the participants to get it right. Randy Brecker weighed in with his approval of the record: “Everyone’s at the top of their Mike game. I found myself pinching my arm to remind myself that Mike is sadly no longer with us.”
Indeed, this dedicated crew really did get it right. And in tackling Brecker’s imposing oeuvre, they reveal the genius of his compositional prowess, a side of the multi-faceted Michael that was often overshadowed by his legendary chops. Fans, a昀cionados, and aspiring saxophonists all over the world still share YouTube clips of Brecker’s incomparable speed and darting imagination on the instrument, yet there is no attempt here to recreate Brecker’s awesome technique on this record. Instead, Charged Particles captures the essence of Michael’s spirit in their faithful renditions of his tunes spanning three decades.
