TWO PIANISTS WHO BURST ON the jazz scene in the first decade of the 21st century, John Escreet and Robert Glasper, pursue their evolving musical concepts on their latest albums. John, an Englishman who moved to the U.S. in 2006, forged an early career in groups of avant-leaning musicians like saxophonists Evan Parker and David Binney and drum mer Tyshawn Sorey. His own albums spot lighted David and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, as he also expanded his tonal palette with electric keyboards and synthe sizers. Robert debuted in the early 2000s (he’s 44, John is 38) with acoustic piano trio albums, but was also involved early in hip-hop, R&B and neo-soul. John’s new CD is his first (acoustic) piano trio recording, while Robert’s latest is the third install ment of his multi-styles-amalgamating series, Black Radio
Seismic Shift , John Escreet (Whirlwind), has John on acoustic piano with bassist Eric Revis and drummer Damion Reid. Of the nine selections, six are John’s originals, two are group improv isations credited to all three, and one is the late pianist Stanley Cowell’s “Equipoise.” The album grew out of intense woodshedding by the trio during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time that John says also allowed him to hone his piano skills.
John has a very distinctive piano style. It is highly percussive, pointillistic with minimal sustain, and precise. His touch can be delicate but more often is robust tending toward brutal as he pounds chords and clusters. A bashing blast opens the ini tial track, “Study No. 1,” followed by a trio passage of hypnotic repetitions leading to an exuberant piano solo that morphs into a slow coda, somber left hand against prob ing right. The trio’s version of “Equipoise” emphasizes the lyrical content, from the insistent melodic-kernal theme through John’s gorgeous expansions of it.
“Outward and Upward” and the short “Quick Reset” are trio improvisations. The former ranges from tinkling to sharp angu lar piano lines, as Eric alternates between arco and pizzicato bowing and Damion shifts from shimmering cymbals to snare paradiddles, until the three coalesce into a chiming, carillon-like ending. The latter finds bass and drums in a fast trot, with John’s solo mixing clumps and clusters of notes. The most arresting piece is John’s “RD,” short for Revis/Damion. Initial group improvisation over a harmonic progression gives way to a rolling vamp rhythm for an
extended piano with bass-drums improvi sation, John spiking the proceedings with repeated interjections of a quick-time dou ble two-note stutter pattern stabbed into his solo lines. Such interjections, abrupt changes of momentum, atonal clusters, and shifts in time by John throughout the album make Seismic Shift a constantly surprising and enlivening listening experi ence.
Black Radio III , Robert Glasper (Loma Vista), is a follow-up to the groundbreaking, and charting 2012 Black Radio and 2013 Black Radio II, (Blue Note Records) – a tenth anniversary edition has just been released. This one is less eclectic than the earlier ones, hewing to Robert’s evolving vision of a synthesis of Black musical styles, from jazz and hip-hop to neo-soul and R&B. The sound on that CD includes his acoustic or electric keyboards anchoring multi-layered tracks featuring singers and rappers, backed by mostly wordless female chorales. Except for the opening and closing selections — the for mer, “In Tune,” a straight, and angry, rap by Amir Sulaiman, the latter, “Bright Lights,” a hybrid sung-rapped tune by Ty Dolla $ign – they all feature singing with rap interludes.
The singers employed, mostly women with mellifluous, airy voices characteristic of neo-soul and romantic R&B. Among them are Tiffany Gouché, Esperanza Spalding, H.E.R., Lalah Hathaway, Ledisi, Jennifer Hudson and India.Arie. Among the rappers, the most distinctive are Killer Mike, Q-Tip and Common. There is a con sistency bordering on sameness to many of the tracks, possibly a suggestion of a par ticular, hypothetical Black radio station. Among the more arresting are “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” featuring Lalah Hathaway and Common; “It Don’t Matter,” a neo-soul duet from singers Gregory Porter and Ledisi; and “Better Than I Imagined” with a vocal from H.E.R. and rapping by Meshell Ndegeocello. Robert not only produced and plays keyboards but also is a co-writer of all but two of the 13 tunes.
John Escreet brings a trio with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Damion Reid to The Jazz Gallery, Oct. 7-8. Robert Glasper’s annual residen cy at the Blue Note is Oct. 4 to Nov. 6, with 52 shows on 26 nights, and a var ied lineup of guests, including trib utes to Herbie Hancock and the late Meghan Stabile.

GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING LUCIana Souza seduces you with dulcet tones. Her speaking voice is ever-melodi ous, and laughter comes easily and echoes with radiant tintinnabulations. Watching her in performance is another kind of magic altogether. Picture this: a darkened stage comes alive with a soft spotlight. The sound on stage is aglow in the slow fire of muted horns and the shy rhythmic back beat of percussion and bass. As if by magic the spotlight picks out a slight figure, tiptoeing and sashaying, dancing into full view to the shuffling rhythm that melds a bossa nova into a maracatu...
Then to audience applause, the quest ing voice of Luciana breaks out behind the hiss of cymbals conjuring a sort of mara catu mar aberto — the sound of the open sea. This is how she introduces the audi ence to the smoky melisma of her wordless aria on the song “Varanda.” As Luciana leads the band into the twisting dark and light of the song’s seductive melody, she reveals just why hers is, indeed, the epito me of musica do coração, music of the heart. It is impossible not to be entranced, as Luciana blends the two unique elements of Brazilian artistry in her music: saudade (longing) and alegria (joy).
Luciana comes from the same vaunted musical and vocal tradition that has given us Elis Regina, Astrud Gilberto, Nara Leão, Joyce, and Rosa Passos. But in this super-constellation of musical stars, Luciana is a singular presence, an artist of the first order. Her instrument is gorgeous, lustrous, precise and feather-light. But her musicianship can be fierce as she digs into the expression of each word, bringing ceaseless dynamics and giving every phrase an uncommon grace. “This is what sets Brazilian music apart from most other musical cultures of the world,” she opines. “It is music that is full of round and ellipti cal lyricism — not just what is played by instruments but also in the language in which the lyrics are sung,” Luciana contin ues. This is something that she exudes completely in her music.
“I am so lucky to be born into an artistic household. My father was the singer and songwriter and my mother the poet and
lyricist,” she says, positively aglow as she recalls the good fortune of her beginnings. “As you would imagine,” she says with pride, “I learned what it meant to navigate this artistic topography at a very young age. The uniqueness of being Brazilian is reflected in our very language,” she reveals. “For instance, even when we speak, the (Portuguese) words themselves seem languid and to dally as we enunciate them with musical slurs and accents. So when singing, lyricism comes almost natu rally to us,” Luciana says as she also reveals the not-so-secret magic of her own musicality.
Luciana’s own and very special brand of eloquence has always been the hallmark of creativity. She is a brilliant songwriter, and her work is a powerful testament to her own sense of deep song that rises to eminence from the profundity of her heart. Combine that with being blessed with a celestial voice, and you have a rare degree of musicianship and vocal artistry. Thus, as Luciana sings — whether an original work or a Brazilian standard — she lays down markers of sensitivity and technical adroitness in works where melody, harmo ny and tricky Brazilian intervals are rapt ly encompassed.
In her decades-long artistic journey, Luciana has been much in demand by diverse artists. She has made brilliant recordings, transcending style and idiom, and is featured on Raising Our Voices (Mack Avenue, 2018) with the Yellowjackets and, most recently, Cantar (Dafnison Music, 2022) with Dafnis Prieto. Meanwhile her inimitable renown comes from three critically-acclaimed intimate recordings — Brazilian Duos (Sunnyside, continued on page 26

A return to NYC for 30-something trombonist, composer and arranger Nick Finzer sees him in the company of a interactive and integrated big band – these players don’t just play charts and take solos. The Rochester, N.Y., native is currently Assistant Professor of Jazz Trombone at North Texas State University. He is a Downbeat Rising Star. His definitive CDs, Cast Of Characters and Out Of Focus (Outside In Records), identified him at the outset as one to watch. From bop to swinging jazz, Nick Finzer will be reckoned with, along with fellow trombonists Marshall Gilkes and Michael Dease, in the future. His big ensemble’s membership includes tenor saxophonist Lucas Pino; alto saxophonist Michael Thomas; trumpeters Augie Haas, Chloe Rowlands and Nadje Noordhuis; trombonists Sara Jacavino and Gina Benalcázar López; pianist Chris Ziemba; bassist Dave Baron; and drummer Jared Schonig. MGN
Sean Jones possesses one of the clearest, cleanest and most pure tones on trumpet in jazz today. Sean’s prowess as an exemplary trumpeter was recognized by Wynton Marsalis, a notable trumpeter himself, when Wynton hired Sean, then age 26, for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Within six months, Sean was in the first trumpet chair, where he remained for his six-year tenure with that band. While with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Sean also played in the trumpet section of legendary bandleader Gerald Wilson’s Orchestra. Sean has also forged a career with his quar tet/quintet. His abilities there are best sampled on Live from the Jazz Bistro (Mack Avenue), wherein he masterfully interacts with his small group featuring the fear some piano of Orrin Evans. GK
A pure, ironic, direct and romantic heart guides the vocalist Kate Baker. A New Jersey native, she studied at William Paterson University and with N.J. pianist Norman Simmons. As a vocal coach and performer, she has taught at the New School and inde pendently. She was prominent in Richie Cole’s Alto Madness Orchestra. Her husband was the late, great guitarist Vic Juris. The recently issued CD by Kate and Vic, Return To Shore on the Strikezone label, displays covers of standards by the Beach Boys, Joni Mitchell and Ivan Lins, and originals. Her working band includes violinist Sara Caswell, pianist Rachel Z. Hakim, guitarist Paul Bollenback, bassist Jay Anderson, and a drummer tba. They also play Jazz Forum in Tarrytown on Oct. 16. MGN
A beloved, prominent jazz kit drummer and teacher over eight decades, Washington, D.C., native Jabali Billy Hart has done it all – playing with Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi, Sonny Fortune, Stan Getz and Joanne Brackeen; releasing his still great CD Enchance on the A&M/Horizon label; leading recordings for ECM and independent labels; belonging to the co-op, all-star collectives Great Friends, The Leaders, and The Cookers. While not brash or forceful, his drumming style is steady and rarely pre dictable. An NEA Jazz Master, Billy Hart is one of our living legends alongside fellow drummers Roy Haynes and Jack DeJohnette. At age 81 he's moving forward, still playing potent, current, relevant jazz. Saxophonist Mark Turner, pianist Ethan Iverson, and bassist Ben Street back the drummer for this week-long residency. MGN
The young trombonist Mariel Bildsten has been gaining acclaim since graduating from the New School where she studied with Steve Turre, Elliot Mason, Reggie Workman and others. Comfortable in big bands and small groups, she plays all types of music including Latin, funk, world and jazz. She can be heard regularly in the big bands of Arturo O’Farrill and Evan Sherman, who co-produced her well-reviewed first album Backbone (Outside in Music). She has performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Radio City, Birdland and Smalls. Inspired by greats such as J.J. Johnson, Curtis Fuller and Lawrence Brown, she headlines a quartet with pianist Miki Yamanaka, bassist Mark Lewandowski, and drummer Charles Goold at the Cellar Dog’s late night show. DJS
Drummer Antonio Sánchez’s output is a prime example of the consummate modern drummer. Whether performing as a sideman, leading his own groups, or scoring films, Antonio’s productivity is unmatched. A native of Mexico City, he came to the United States and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Berklee School of Music and New England Conservatory. Antonio’s profile received a considerable boost when he scored the 2014 film Birdman. His score was critically acclaimed and garnered Antonio numerous accolades including a Grammy Award and a Golden Globe nomina tion. Since then, he has led a varied career that doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. For his shows, Antonio is joined by his Bad Hombre group, which cleverly mixes jazz with electronica. Their new album, SHIFT (Bad Hombre Vol II), is soon to be released by Warner Bros Records. EW
Chuck Redd is a two-weapon jazz veteran, equally at home behind the drums or play ing the vibes. He spent 19 years as guitarist Charlie Byrd's drummer before making his own mark as a mallet specialist. For this trio gig with pianist John di Martino and bassist Neal Miner, he's playing vibes. Chuck has appeared on more than 80 record ings, six of them as a leader. His sparkling, melodic sound is on full display as he and his bandmates dig into a few tunes from his latest recording, Groove City (Dalphine, 2019), some newer compositions that he wrote during the pandemic downtime, and a few standards by some of his favorite composers, including Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Antonio Carlos Jobim. KF
A new all-star female jazz supergroup, Hera picks up the reins from notables like the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Straight Ahead, Diva, Duchess and Artemis. Saxophonist Chelsea Baratz is the principal as music director with Anne Drummond, flute; Alexis Lombre, keyboards; Endea Owens, bass; Shirazette Tinnin, drums; and Andromeda Turre, vocals. A native of Pittsburgh, born into bop to soul jazz, Chelsea is versed in the tenor sax tradition of that instrument. Hera is a composers forum and a singers haven. Alexis Lombre, keys and vocals, is a recent midwest transplant (Chicago and metro Detroit) and bears notice. A pending CD is inevitable, so you're in on the ground floor. This BRIC JazzFest show replaces the scheduled trumpeter Jaimie Branch, who unexpectedly passed away in August. MGN
Pianist and composer Willerm Delisfort studied with the great bop pianist Willie Pickens at Northern Illinois University. He taught Willerm several different styles so that now, while much in demand as a top notch jazz musician, Willerm is also com fortable playing Gospel and R&B, and on Broadway. He has appeared in Dreamgirls, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Crowns, and Don’t Bother Me, I Can’t Cope. He has worked with Fareed Haque, David Sanchez, Louis Bellson, Lew Soloff, Calvin Newborne, Curtis Fuller, Jimmy Heath, Bria Skonberg plus many others. He composed all of the music on his debut streaming recording, Freedom Riders, which features an 11-piece ensem ble and is available on Amazon Music. Here, the Willerm Delisfort Project includes bassist Jonathan Michel, drummer John Davis, and vocalist Alexa Barchini. DJS
One of the most diverse pianists on today’s jazz scene, Ted Rosenthal’s repertoire blends bop, cool jazz, swing and stride. He enjoys using classical music as a launching pad for improvising. His recent jazz opera, Dear Erich, based on his grandmother’s let ters to his father prior to the Holocaust, is a striking work and still being performed today. For the past three decades, his focus has been on composing and leading his own bands. Ted’s orchestral approach is evident whether he is playing solo piano or with a group of any size or instrumentation, so the results are consistently stunning. Ted’s trio at the Jazz Forum includes bassist Noriko Ueda and drummer Tim Horner. Ted is also playing at Mezzrow on Oct. 14-15 with bassist Martin Wind and drummer Quincy Davis. KD

band, joining the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra that played the Village Vanguard on Monday nights, just in time for a European tour including Moscow in April, 1972.
“I also called Clark Terry, who I’d met in California, and he invited me to come by The Tonight Show (where Terry was in the TV band), and he introduced me to Snooky Young and Doc Severinsen. When [Charles] Mingus called Snooky for a gig and he couldn’t do it, he recommended me to him, even though neither Snooky nor Clark had heard me play in New York. Mingus had written a piece for Roy Eldridge, but Roy couldn’t play at the time, doctor’s orders.”
Jon went to see Charles at his apart ment and Mingus showed him the chart and asked him if he could play it, including the high notes. “I looked and said ‘yes,’” says Jon. “He thought I was arrogant, but I just said as little as possible; I was scared of Mingus because of stories I’d heard about him hitting brass players in the mouth.” Jon got the gig, a concert at Philharmonic Hall, and went on to play a few more gigs and tour with Mingus.
Another aspect of Jon’s career — studio work, including with pop, R&B and soul singers — was jump-started because of one more connection with a trumpet player.
FEW MUSICIANS — LIVING OR not — can match the breadth of trumpeter Jon Faddis’ résumé. Not only has Jon played in and led a variety of big bands (he joined Lionel Hampton’s days before his 18th birthday), he has also recorded and/or performed with a host of pop and R&B artists from Paul Simon and Mick Jagger to Aretha Franklin and Bette Midler. He’s the only trumpet player in jazz who has convincingly mastered the intricacies of Dizzy Gillespie’s approach to the instrument. This month Jon is cele brating Dizzy’s 105th birthday anniver sary at (appropriately) Dizzy’s Club.
“I was hooked on Dizzy’s style when I first heard him as a teenager,” said Jon in a recent phone conversation. “And then I got the chance to sit in with him when he came to San Francisco when I was still in high school” in Oakland.
At that time, Dizzy told Jon to look him up if he came to New York. Shortly after high school, Jon — a trumpet prodigy with a precocious command of the instrument’s most stratospheric range — began touring with Hampton’s big band. In New York in 1971, he tried to contact Dizzy, but didn’t have the right address. But when he noticed that the master was playing at the Village Vanguard in early 1972, he quit Hampton so he could see his idol. Not only did he see him, but Jon spent some time at Dizzy’s home in New Jersey.
Jon was soon back with another big
“I met [trumpeter] Lew Soloff in California, and when I called him in New York, he took me to studio gigs he had. When he was handed a chart with particu larly high notes he would say, ‘Give it to the kid (me), he can play it.’ That’s how I got into all that studio work.”
During the many years Jon was a firstcall studio trumpeter, he says, “It was usu ally fun. I was a regular and I enjoyed it at the time, up to a point.”
But he also relished working in big bands, joining Dizzy’s last one, The United Nation Orchestra, and later leading the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars. He led the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band for a decade, beginning in 1992. “That band was something special,” he recalled. “We would rehearse eight or ten charts on a Monday and have to play them on a Thursday, and arrangers would want to throw in the kitchen sink because it was an all-star band and it was Carnegie Hall, but we always nailed it.”
When Carnegie Hall pulled the plug in 2002, Jon continued to lead the band as the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra of New York, which still occasionally reconvenes.
Jon is also passionate about jazz educa tion. He began doing clinics with students back when he was in his 20s, with Thad and Mel, and has been a faculty member at the Jazz Studies program at SUNY Purchase for 23 years. Since teaching reg ularly, he’s stressed the importance of jazz history.

WHEN COVID-19 HIT, THE HOSPItality industry was the first to shut down. Jazz clubs were a prime target as live performances ceased and the sacred notes of practitioners went silent. Musicians and club owners alike were left with a life-altering question: when will we get back to what we love?
At the start of 2022, consumer confi dence increased, and clubs, both old and new, opened their doors. New York area clubs were poised to come back to their communities with open arms. One new club is Jazz On Main, founded by Shaul Dover in Mt. Kisco, N.Y. Shaul is a local producer, recording engineer, and founder of the studio The Sweat Shop. As a produc er, Shaul has recorded a variety of musi cians including singers Rob Thomas and Thalia, as well as voice work for film fea turing actors Ryan Reynolds and Bruce Willis. Shaul’s objective of opening a jazz club began in 2017, with COVID-19 delay ing his dream until late 2021.
As Shaul states, “The general concept is to create an immersive space where sound, image, the whole senses are combined into one experience.” This includes a diverse roster of artists from the area such as vocalist Gabrielle Stravelli and pianists Misha Piatigorsky and Peter Malinverni, to name a few.
to start going out again, and we had great bands that were shedding."

Brooklyn has seen itself as a new haven for jazz venues. Ornithology in Bushwick is the brain-child of New York jazz main stay Mitch Borden. New Jersey-bred, Mitch got his start in the live performance industry working the lights for his broth er’s gigs. After spending time in San Francisco where he helped open Club Deluxe, Mitch made his way back to New York in 1992.
Following his successes running main stay clubs such as Smalls and Fat Cat, Mitch opened Ornithology on July 27, 2021, with his wife Rie YamaguchiBorden. Whereas many felt that the lock down hindered live performers, Mitch feels that the post COVID-19 talent pool shows what the New York jazz scene has to offer. As he explains, “What I noticed is that everyone came out of COVID better. For us, COVID actually helped. People wanted
New Jersey is rife with incredibly tal ented musicians and home to several notable clubs such as Shanghai Jazz in Madison. A new addition to the scene in northern New Jersey is Brothers Smokehouse in Ramsey. It’s the brain child of Jaime Farella-Weston, grandson of the pianist Randy Weston, with sax player T.K. Blue – who collaborated with the late master for three decades – doing the book ing. As Jaime grew up attending his grand father’s concerts, he developed an appreci ation for jazz. The impetus for opening the club was to bring his love of jazz and food into one place.
Jaime states, “Barbeque and music go together. We wanted to incorporate our love of food, our family history, and our love of jazz.” Additionally, “Creating a fam ily atmosphere where families can come in and listen to music together and eat together and stomp their feet and have a good time as a family” is particularly important. “This is our legacy that we want to leave for the world for generations to come.”
want to leave for the world for generations to come.”
While new clubs popping up is a good sign for the health of the jazz community, the re-opening of established clubs is just as important. National mainstays such as Jazz Standard in New York City, the Blue Whale in Los Angeles, and Twins Jazz in Washington, D.C., have permanently shut their doors. One phoenix to rise from the ashes is the revered Smoke Jazz Club.

Proprietors Paul Stache and Molly Sparrow Johnson re-opened Smoke after being closed for two years. One of the main issues that caused their delay in re-open ing is that they wanted to make sure that both the performers and audiences were absolutely safe. As Paul states, “We have elder musicians playing. We also have a very diverse audience in terms of age groups. Just to be able to keep our community safe was really a big priority for us.”
After an extensive renovation, the club celebrated its re-opening with a ribboncutting ceremony on September 1st that featured New York City Council Members Gale Brewer and Shaun Abreu and per formances from the Al Foster Quintet with Nicholas Payton, Chris Potter, Kevin Hays and Vicente Archer.
Arthur's Tavern in the West Village also recently re-opened after an extensive renovation. Known for its speakeasy vibe, the club has the further distinction of being a local haunt of Charlie Parker. In addition, the club has hosted luminaries such as Mabel Godwin and Roy Hargrove. During COVID-19, Blue Note Entertainment acquired the tavern and celebrated its re-opening with a perform ance by Kermit Ruffins.
The venerable Cafe Bohemia is reopening its doors after a 2 1/2 year shut down. Located in Greenwich Village, the club has been the setting of several notable

On an interview with saxophonist Gary Bartz that is on YouTube, Gary talks about a time when he and Keith Jarrett were both with Miles Davis. Bartz said he didn’t like the way Jarrett was comping behind him on his solos, saying he felt that Jarrett wasn’t listening to him. He complained to Miles, and Miles told him to complain to Jarrett. He did, and Jarrett stopped comping completely behind Bartz. Bartz was okay with that, but eventually Jarrett went back to his old way of playing odd things behind Bartz’s soloing. Bartz again complained, angrily, to Miles. Miles called Jarrett into the dressing room, and Bartz left while they talked. When they played again, Jarrett was even more elaborate in his accompa niments to Bartz’s solos! Bartz found out later that Miles had said to Jarrett, “Gary loves what you’re doing behind him. He wants MORE!” Bartz commented, “Miles liked that kind of tension.”

As Ken states, “I'd like for this to be home to the strongest upand-coming talent as well as some leg endary musicians.
Uncertainty has always been a through line in the heartbeat of jazz. The COVID19 pandemic served to be another tough blow to the community. However, jazz is a resilient art form, and with top talent and an eager audience, jazz in the New York City area will always rise to the top.
I’ll never forget the evening of March 23, 2020. I was on my way to the late, lamented Kitano Jazz Club when an alert came on my tele phone. The mayor had ordered all live perform ances cancelled. Since I was almost at my destination, I continued on. Not only the expected musicians were there, but also almost everyone whose gigs had been cancelled that night, turn ing the evening into one large jam session. Here’re tap dancer Michela Marino Lerman, bassist Rob Duguay, saxophonist Wayne Escoffery and guitarist Amanda Monaco

Drummer / percusionist, ANDREW SCOTT POTTER, working New York jazz drummer for 8 years, has lived in Brazil more than 30 years. Working with Afro Bahian dancers and drummers, and some of Brazil's top musicians, he decided to learn some of the grooves of KETU CANDOMBLE, to play Brazilian rhythms better. To his surprise , he discovered profound parallel hookups, of Ketu Candomble grooves, and the evolution of rhythms, phrasing and phrasing in compositions, with the history of Jazz and the great innovators.
