WINNING SPINS

TWO ALTO SAXOPHONISTS,

Dmitry Baevsky and Immanuel Wilkins, have current albums that embrace different aspects of modern jazz tradition. Dmitry comes firmly out of the bebop/cool/modern school, his alto sound more mellifluous than hard boppers and more akin to the cool players like Lee Konitz and on the West Coast, Art Pepper. Immanuel espouses the “spiritual,” some times messianic, tradition exemplified by John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler and carried on by Steve Coleman and Kenny Garrett.

Kids’ Time, Dmitry Baevsky (Fresh Sound New Talent), is notably engaging and varied for a record dominated (nine tunes out of 12) by the trio of Dmitry’s alto with Clovis Nicolas’ bass and Jason Brown’s drums. Joining them on three tracks is trumpeter-flugelhornist Stéphane Belmondo. Nine selections are originals by Dmitry, ranging from boppish to AfroLatin, and a Sonny Rollins-like 3/4 “Morningside Waltz.” He also includes two ballad standards, Jimmy Van Heusen’s “Deep In A Dream” and Jimmy McHugh’s “Don’t Blame Me,” as well as Dexter Gordon’s salute to Latin jazz, “Soy Califa.”

Dmitry ventures into Afro-Latin beats on his slinky “Imintagante,” his alto theme tagged with trills suggestive of a sensuous dance, the rhythm dominated by tom-toms. That and “Time Flies,” showcasing lively and frequent interchanges between Dmitry’s alto and Jason’s drums, as well as the fast riff tune “Rollin’,” are rhythmic highlights of the CD. Another distinctive Dmitry composition is “Minor Delay,” a mid-tempo trio tune with alto over rolling drums, delivering long arpeggios that resolve into a skein of melodic themes.

When Stéphane joins the trio, it recalls the piano-less combos of the Cool era like Gerry Mulligan’s quartets, especially on Dmitry’s cool-boppish “Kids’ Time,” where the trumpet reminds of Chet Baker. His trumpet also adds sparks to Gordon’s “Soy Califa,” as hard-bop as Latin in this ver sion. Dmitry reveals an engaging lyrical

side on the album’s two ballads, both stan dards. “Deep In A Dream” has Stéphane intoning the melody on flugelhorn, Dmitry shadowing him and joining in for a unison bridge. His alto solo is reminiscent of Phil Woods. The record closes with the trio on “Don’t Blame Me,” tenderly rendered by alto caressing the melody and soloing over mostly bass and very light brushes from Jason.

The Seventh Hand , Immanuel Wilkins (Blue Note), is titled in reference to Immanuel’s concept of the album’s seven tracks as movements in an evolving suite. The music also moves in rough parallel to John Coltrane’s later conceptual evolution. The first piece, “Emanation,” reflects the classic Coltrane Quartet approach to open triplets and 6/8-grounded rhythm. Pianist Micah Thomas conjures McCoy Tyner, while bassist Daryl Johns and drummer Kweku Sumbry create the tidal-like roiling of that iconic group. “Don’t Break,” a mes merizing, processional piece built on a repeating riff and energized by the Afrorhythms of guests Farafina Kan Percussion Ensemble, leads to “Fugitive Ritual Selah,” its hymn-like chant bur geoning with hypnotic, accruing details.

The quartet veers almost retro on the fourth selection, “Shadows,” which Immanuel calls “minimalist, it’s all about the melody.” With walking bass and a 4/4 feel, it is the closest the suite comes to tra ditional swing. Elena Pinderhughes joins the quartet for “Witness” and “Lighthouse,” her flute floating over the former’s “blossoming half notes” melody, then participating in a coda on the latter, a mostly hyperkinetic romp by the quartet. The two tunes lead seamlessly into “Lift,” a 26-minute quartet free improvisation Immanuel likens to “speaking in tongues.”

Dmitry Baevsky brings his band to Smalls Jazz Club on Nov. 26 and Mezzrow on Nov. 28. The Immanuel Wilkins Quartet is featured at the Jazz Room Series, William Paterson University, on Nov. 20.

MILWAUKEE

NATIVE DAVID

Hazeltine began playing organ as his first instrument at the age of 8, and a few years later he was turned onto jazz by his older brother’s record collection, assisted by his mother’s purchase of Jimmy Smith Plays the Standards. David recalls, “One listen and I was hooked. My mother found a jazz organ teacher who took me to the next level and steered me to a lot of artists.” Switching to piano at 16, when David entered college, he became a classi cal composition major, though he was still focused on jazz.

David describes his native city having a healthy jazz scene then. Artists coming through town “were hiring young guys to play with them. The Jazz Gallery was where they brought national artists to play. After my first year of music college, I became the house pianist. I met Chet Baker there. After rehearsing our first tune, he put down his horn and said, ‘You really need to come to New York.’” David accompanied other well-known artists including Eddie Harris and Pepper Adams.

One of David’s first mentors was saxo phonist Sonny Stitt, whom he accompanied in Milwaukee for four nights during four separate bookings. “I was very nervous. Sonny was the first major artist whom I played with. He knew that and that I was serious about the music. He took me upstairs and asked me if I knew certain tunes, like ‘Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.’ I said no, so he played the tune, then stopped to demonstrate the changes over a chorus. We played it on the next set, then he played me a few more tunes between sets. Those were big learn ing experiences.”

David’s long tenure with vocalist Marlena Shaw also paid dividends for him, recalling, “Marlena made me arrange and write for her, and taught me a lot by what she’d reject. She told me what she wanted and I would do it. Slide Hampton showed me how to write for a big band. He told me to write the voicings that I played on piano and everything would sound good.”

At the time of our interview, David had just returned from touring Europe with One For All, a band that has been active

for almost three decades. “The genesis of the group began before I arrived in New York. The drummer [Joe Farnsworth], tenor player [Eric Alexander], trumpeter [Jim Rotondi] and trombonist [Steve Davis] were friends and all played togeth er regularly. It wasn’t a cohesive unit until I showed up, then they knew they had a band. We did demo recordings and knew we had to make a CD. Being a cooperative at the time worked well for us.” The hassle of traveling and having two members working in Europe now makes touring more difficult. “We use subs sometimes, but never on recordings.”

David likes to dedicate as much time as possible to composition, describing the process as simple. “Usually there’s an inspiration like a little bass line, two or three chords in a certain sequence that strike me as special, or a melodic passage, lick or phrase. It always starts with some thing small, and then everything is created around that tiny piece. Finding it is a tricky thing; compositions usually happen out of the blue. When you have to write, like for the trio recording I’m doing in December for Criss Cross with Peter Washington and Joe Farnsworth, I have a deadline, but I might not have any inspira tions. When you have to fabricate inspira tion, sometimes it is a little more difficult, as you might not have confidence in your idea.”

BEN WENDEL

VILLAGE VANGUARD / NOVEMBER 1-6

Formerly with the combo Kneebody, saxophonist Ben Wendel is carving out a distinct identity as a leader. The native of Vancouver, B.C., was raised in Los Angeles, served as an Adjunct Professor at USC, and lives in New York City. Ben has a style where his influences are not obvious. Post-bop and contemporary jazz are included, with expertise in staggered phrasings and level-headed melodicism. Ben studied at the Eastman School, received a Grammy nomination, and has recorded for labels like Sunnyside and Motema. He plays a lovely bassoon. Ben flies under the radar of big name saxophonists, but his ceiling is high as a young player with miles to travel and soar. These shows are being recorded for an upcoming CD release with pianist Gerald Clayton, bassist Linda May Han Oh, and drummer Obed Calvaire. MGN

SAMSON SCHMITT with DJANGO FESTIVAL ALLSTARS

BIRDLAND / NOVEMBER 1-6

Gypsy Jazz guitarist Samson Schmitt has been performing since the age of 12. He learned guitar from his father, the celebrated Dorado Schmitt, and credits influences such as George Benson, Biréli Lagrène, Toots Thielemans and Stochelo Rosenberg. Critic Michael Dregni in Vintage Guitar wrote that Samson “has a prodigious talent and knows his way around the fretboard with astonishing facility, speed and grace.”

Since 2002 he has traveled the world with his own Gypsy Jazz Band and first appeared in New York with Paquito D’Rivera and George Benson. For this Django Reinhardt Festival, Samson is joined by his two daughters, vocalist Stefi Schmitt and vocalist/guitarist Stenli Schmitt, plus Ludovic Beier on accordion, Pierre Blanchard on violin, Antonio Licusati on bass, and special guest Michael Harris on guitar. DJS

CONRAD HERWIG

THE DJANGO / NOVEMBER 4

Known as a fine leader and slide trombonist, Conrad Herwig is also quite famous as one who pays tribute to his heroes. A native of Lawton, Okla., he studied with the leg endary Trummy Young in Hawaii, continued at North Texas State University and Queens College, and played with Joe Henderson and Miles Davis. Afro-Cuban music has always been a passion, and Conrad’s string of “Latin Side Of” CDs are all keepers including The Latin Side of Kind Of Blue for Miles and those for John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Horace Silver (already Caribbeantinged), and most recently Charles Mingus. Conrad has a sound that is irresistible, a post-bop/J.J. Johnson fluidity. His Latin Side Quintet includes Craig Handy, sax/flute; Bill O’Connell, piano; Ruben Rodriguez, bass; and Robby Ameen, drums/percussion. MGN

MARK SHERMAN

DEER HEAD INN / NOVEMBER 13; JAZZ FORUM / NOVEMBER 27

A fine jazz vibist, Mark Sherman has quietly but firmly established a substantial career over several decades. The New York City native is a prominent teacher, pri vately and at the Juilliard School in academia. Though he has many credits in sym phonic and orchestral settings, including playing piano, his sound can span shimmer ing tones, minimalism, Milt Jackson bebop, and classical chamber à la the Modern Jazz Quartet. A delight to listen to, he is one of the unsung heroes on the vibes and stands among such top players as Joe Locke, Stefon Harris or Bryan Carrott. His recent band has featured trumpeter Joe Magnarelli, bassist Dean Johnson, and drummer Tim Horner. Expect to hear selections from Mark’s new recording Bright Light MGN

JERRY VEZZA

MADISON COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER / NOVEMBER 13

Pianist Jerry Vezza cites Bill Evans as his idol, a clear influence in the way he plays with beautiful chordal structure and a gorgeous tone. Jerry even works occasionally with longtime Evans drummer Eliot Zigmund. He has played with other greats includ ing Martin Wind, Billy Drummond, John Pizzarelli, Glenn Davis, Rob Paparozzi and Bob DeVos. Star-Ledger critic Zan Stewart praised Jerry for embracing “the classic values of melodic warmth, rhythmic subtlety, and plain elegance.” And that has made him a favorite in the metropolitan area where he is most likely to appear these days. Jazz fans can hear him in a benefit concert for the Madison (NJ) Community Arts Center with four superb musicians: vocalist Brynn Stanley, singer/songwriter Grover Kemble, bassist Hal Slapin, and drummer John Vourtsis. PANGEA / NOVEMBER 16; JAZZ FORUM / NOVEMBER 20

A new name to most, vocalist CeCe Gable hails originally from Reno, Nev., and comes to us in New York for these gigs. Her debut CD, Next Year’s Song, showcases her soul ful, swinging style, surrounded by top-notch talent like pianist Alan Broadbent, pro ducer and bassist Harvie S, guitarist Roni Ben-Hur, and drummer Matt Wilson. Singing standards and some originals, CeCe has an old deep soul. Reinterpreting wellknown tunes, CeCe sounds familiar, as if she's been doing this since childhood. She’s quite good at taking well-worn lyrics and making them her own. Some listeners might make favorable comparisons to the late Carmen McRae. A rising star for sure, she is in a crowded field of female vocalists, but she is off to a great start. MGN

TAWANDA BIRDLAND THEATER / NOVEMBER 17

A winner (in a tie) at the Ninth Annual Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in Newark on June 6, 2021, Tawanda (she goes by one name, like Cher and Adele) is making her Big Apple club debut as her first album is being released on Resonance Records: Smile. If it is any indication, this gig should be auspicious. The CD reveals Tawanda to be equally at home as a jazz singer able to spin standards into blooming swing and effortlessly scat over changes, and a fine interpreter of ballads and “art songs” to rival Broadway’s and cabaret’s best. Her deliberately off-key ren dering of the refrain of “I’m Okay” is masterful acting, and she is just as comfortable with the simmering drama of Sting’s “Sister Moon” and her ferociously swinging “What A Little Moonlight Can Do.” At Birdland she’s joined by John di Martino, piano; Marco Panascia, bass; and Tim Horner, drums. JEREMY PELT

DIZZY'S CLUB / NOVEMBER 17-19

Easily a top three straight-ahead jazz trumpeter among his contemporaries, Terence Blanchard, Sean Jones and Roy Hargrove, Jeremy Pelt has consistently recorded, per formed and written post-bop jazz and originals. Born in Los Angeles, he came up in the ranks working with Roy, the Mingus Big Band, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and many small combos. His CDs on the Max Jazz label are ones to seek. Jeremy won the Downbeat Rising Star award five straight years. His mastery of the trumpet, clean phrasing, attack, ideas and tender ballads with controlled dynamics are clear and enjoyable. Jeremy fronts this excellent band of keyboardist Victor Gould, vibraphonist Chien Chien Lu, bassist Vicente Archer, drummer Allan Menard, and possibly Anne Drummond on flute. Their new CD is Soundtrack MGN

MICHELLE WALKER

CHELSEA TABLE + STAGE / NOVEMBER 25

A grand singer possessing a gifted voice, wit, wisdom and charm, Michelle Walker has flown under the radar for far too long. The German-born singer and graduate of American University has only a scant four CDs, but they are distinctive via her neosoulful voice as she crosses over into scat jazz, pop hits, and standards. Her biggest influences were her mentor Mark Murphy and the legendary Betty Carter. Michelle’s latest effort, Take A Chance On Love, attests to her growth which comes out in lyrical, sometimes inventive phrasings that reflect her influences. In a field loaded with jazz singers, she deserves wider recognition. Her very good and inspired band at this new venue comprises veteran guitarist Paul Bollenback, pianist Sean Fitzpatrick, bassist Sam Bevan, and drummer Andrew Atkinson. MGN

REGINA CARTER: A Always Pushing the Boundaries

music and I through the dance. Joining forces with her is humbling and exhilarat ing.”

Not only has Regina won multiple read ers’ and critic’s polls from publications like Downbeat and JazzTimes, she has also received a Doris Duke Artist Award, the prestigious MacArthur Foundation “genius grant,” and the NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship for 2023.

She often tours with her regular group comprised of her husband and drummer Alvester Garnett, bassist Chris Lightcap, and pianist Xavier Davis. And she is also in demand to perform with many leading jazz artists including Arturo O’Farrill, Stefon Harris, Eddie Palmieri and Kenny Barron.

“I started violin at 4,” says Regina, “and was immersed in the Suzuki Method which meant my mother was as involved as my teachers. I was exposed to all types of music growing up in Detroit and was sur rounded by the Motown sound. In fact, my first gigs were with a pop group when I was in high school.”

VIOLINIST

REGINA CARTER’S

biography begins with the unequivocal fact that she enjoys performing all styles of music including “jazz, R&B, Latin, classi cal, blues, country, pop, African, and on and on.” With her appearance at this year’s TD James Moody Jazz Festival at Newark’s NJPAC, she adds one more. She has been commissioned by Carolyn Dorfman Dance and NJPAC to compose music for a new work choreographed by Carolyn Dorfman to be premiered at NJPAC on November 16.

“I have never created music for dance before working with Carolyn,” explains Regina. “In fact, I had never met her before this venture although we each knew who the other was. Over the summer, we got to know each other, how we worked, and what we valued.”

In contrast, Carolyn has commissioned many composers including jazz projects. In 1994, she collaborated with jazz drummer Horacee Arnold to create her dynamic work Sextet, an exploration of the energy, rhythm and power of six dancers, and DANCESTORIES , featuring griot Charlotte Blake Alston and jazz violinist John Blake.

As Carolyn says, “Music is an integral part of dance, and I love collaborating with jazz artists. Working with Regina in our 40th anniversary season is a career high light. As one of the world’s foremost jazz artists, she possesses range, artistry and humanity. Regina creates worlds through

Regina studied classical music at the New England Conservatory of Music, but after a couple of years decided to pursue jazz and transferred to Oakland University in Michigan. She gained atten tion with the all-woman jazz quintet Straight Ahead in 1987.

As Regina explains, “It was not common for women to play jazz violin when I was starting out. My three biggest influences on jazz violin were men — Stephane Grappelli, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Noel Pointer. Now there are more of us.”

It was a woman, however, who was Regina’s most important inspiration — Ella Fitzgerald. She celebrated her music with her 2017 release, Ella: Accentuate the Positive (OKeh) which Jazziz critic Matt Micucci praised for its “exceptional warmth and sincerity.” In fact, two tracks from this CD have found their way into the new dance by Carolyn Dorfman: “I’ll Never Be Free” and “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive.”

As Carolyn elaborates, “Entitled ‘The Attitude of Doing,’ the commissioned work features Regina’s music both in recorded and live performance, as in ‘Mwana Talitambula’ from her album Reverse Thread, where she beautifully integrates live playing with her recording. In other sections, she plays solo violin to accompany the dance. She is the connector, the story teller. I say, ‘Regina, you are the conduit to the dance’ and she replies, ‘Your dance is the conduit to the music!’ Together we cre ate a joyous journey of life, love and com munity.”

Regina is equally pleased with the work. “When I actually got to see the dancers rehearsing to my music, it was continued on page 23

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROW

Bill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links.

Tom Grimm posted this on Facebook:

A number of years ago, while I was driving home from a tennis match, I turned on the radio and caught what was a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Count Basie's birth. They were interviewing alumnae of the Basie band. One of the players talked about Basie's management style. Basie would assign a veteran player to mentor newcomers. The core mes sage was that the Count had several rules. The first rule was to listen to Freddie Green, the guitar player, and if you did that, you wouldn't need the other rules.

Basie often said, “If you can’t hear Freddie, you’re playing too loud.”

HAZELTINE...continued from page 13

Hayes dates back to the mid-1990s. He explains, “When I was a kid, I loved Louis Hayes so much that I bought a drumset and learned to play just by listening to him. I had the opportunity to record with him. Then he invited me to join his band and we toured for several years. Hanging out and playing with a guy that you’ve looked up to has been a wonderful experi ence.” David appears on the drummer’s 2021 Savant CD, Crisis

He recalls a surprising reaction to his CD, Señor Blues, a tribute to Horace Silver featuring Peter and Louis. “Louis went to see Horace and gave him a copy of the CD. One day, I came home and listened to a three-minute message from Horace, who I had never met, raving about this record I made of his tunes. I was so excited, I want ed to keep the message. But before I knew it, 30 days passed and it was gone from the answering service.”

amazing!” she exclaims. “I get to blend improvisation and recording with Carolyn’s choreography and see everything come together with absolutely gorgeous dancers. It has been a fantastic experience.”

Regina’s music is going to be performed by dancers Katlyn Baskin, Brandon Jones, Jarred Bosch, Kaila Moses, Dominique Dobransky, Maiko Harada, Gianna Diaz, Khalid Dunton, Charles Scheland, Andréa Ward, Carmella Taitt and Hannah Gross.

So now Regina Carter can add dance composition to a long list of credits that includes teacher at Manhattan School of Music, New Jersey City University, and as Director of NJPAC’s Geri Allen Jazz Camp; a Grammy Award and several Grammy nominations; and a Pulitzer Prize jurist (thrice). Most important, however, she is a great jazz violinist whose music is loved around the world.

Regina Carter appears with Carolyn Dorfman Dance at NJPAC as part of the TD Moody Jazz Festival on Nov. 16.

A Moment You Missed by Fran Kaufman Hot House Contributing Photographer

My first visit to the new and improved Smoke Jazz Club on Sept. 28 was impressive in so many way — the expanded listening room, the marvelous sound, and the pure musical energy of the Micah Thomas Trio.

After a set that went on for more than an hour, I met the trio outside the club, on a very chilly night, still as enthusiastic as they were on the bandstand. Left to right: pianist Micah Thomas, drummer Kayvan Gordon and, dressed for the weather, bassist Dean Torrey.

26 IT'S TIME FOR A PARADIGM SHIFT IN HOW WE PERCEIVE THE HISTORY AND ORIGINS OF JAZZ
Jack Joao Potter Bons Ritmos Artist
The late Bira Reis , Pelorinho icon and mentor to Bons Ritmos about Ketu Candomble Afro Brazilian Ketu Candomble has powerful parallel evolution to grooves, phrasings in solos and compositions in Jazz history. This is one more reason to go back and look again, at the master innovators, and understand where they were coming from, and the concepts they were working with. “The splang a lang cymbal jazz ride can be found embedded in BRAVUM. That is the whole swing era ...” Andrew Scott Potter Joplin, Jelly Roll, Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives, Ellington, Tatum,James P. Johnson, Basie, Miles, Trane, Wayne and many more, all can be found in the Jazket series. youtube search: "Jazket, Andrew Scott Potter, All Chapters Combined" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eo7NNuHGa_M&t=982s
Katatau Olodum
European sheet music notation, like in the Real Book, can not truly convey what the real swing feel sounds like. We read the notation, but, base our interpretation on listening and copying the masters and innovators in jazz. In the Afro Brazilian religion, Ketu Candomble, if you take the JINKA / BRAVUM bell part, and add a beat, the feel of that groove is exactly how you should interpret "eighth notes" when reading sheet music for jazz. If you know the origins, and investigate its properties, you will swing harder. This JAZKET information, is brought to you by: Bons Ritmos Productions.
