By George Kanzler 30-SOMETHING JAZZ MUSICIAN from Italy pays homage to his original A jazz inspirations, and a 40-year jazz vet-

eran realizes his “dream project” on two new albums headlining guitars. Pasquale Grasso honors the pioneers of bebop with his trio, while Dave Stryker reaches beyond his groove and blues comfort zone with a program presenting a jazz quartet with a string quartet.

Be-Bop!, Pasquale Grasso (Sony Masterworks), features nine tunes from the early years of bebop at first recorded

by Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, plus a ballad by Pasquale, “Lamento Della Campagnia,” based on the Billie Holiday torch song “Some Other Spring.” Pasquale’s guitar is joined by his regular trio members, bassist Ari Roland and drummer Keith Balla. Singer Samara Joy, who has been touring with Pasquale, chimes in on “I’m In A Mess,” originally sung by Joe Carroll on Dizzy’s 1951 album, School Days.

The CD kicks off with the Gillespie classic “Night in Tunisia,” Pasquale riding on the Afro-Latin rhythms of the A sections, then nailing the lightning strike of the a cappella break after the six-beat kicker, before reeling off a steady skein of bop single note lines in his ebullient solo.

Ari contributes an arco solo, one of several as he confines them to the bow, distinguishing this outing from other trio records. Another characteristic of the trio is the rapport between guitar and drums, evident on four- and two-bar trades between Pasquale and Keith on the barnburner-tempoed “Be-Bop,” “Cheryl,” “Groovin’ High” and “Ornithology,” the last with Keith on brushes.

Samara Joy brings a vocal sparkle to “I’m in a Mess (I Guess),” the wry lyric resurrected from a mid-20th century Gillespie date. While this CD is memorable for the dazzling facility and invention Pasquale brings to the bebop heads and solos, three slower pieces are also well worth savoring. He zeroes in on the magnetic appeal of Monk’s melody on “Ruby, My Dear,” and reminds us what a gorgeous contrafact of “Embraceable You” Parker’s “Quasimodo” is in the jazz canon. And his one original, “Lamento Della Campagnia,” is an emotionally resonant response to its Holiday inspiration.

Overall, Be-Bop! proves that its namesake is alive and well.

As We Are, Dave Stryker (Sony Masterworks), finds Dave’s guitar in the

company of Wayne Shorter’s rhythm section—John Patitucci, bass, and Brian Blade, drums—plus pianist Julian Shore, a student of Shorter’s pianist Danilo Perez. Julian also contributes the arrangements, which artfully and fully incorporate a traditional string quartet.

This is dramatically new territory for Dave, whose wheelhouse has long been blues and groove-oriented jazz, often in contexts that include Hammond B3 organ. But, as he says in the notes, working with strings has been his “dream project.”

There are six of Dave’s compositions, plus one by Julian and a cover of Nick Drake’s “River Man,” on As We Are, as well as a short (1:10) string quartet “Overture.” It commences the music and is indicative of Julian’s string quartet work, which is much more integrated into the fabric of the arrangements than conventional string sweetening often heard on jazz-with-strings albums.

Julian’s inventive inclusion of the string quartet is particularly striking on Drake’s “River Man,” which opens with a free-style group improvisation, leading into the melody from Dave, backed by the band and strings. Sara Caswell then solos on violin as Brian shifts to 5/4 time.

Strings then support and counterpoint Dave’s guitar solo. Another surprising employment of strings is on “Soul Friend,” Dave’s one original “greasy” blues. Dave’s funky lead is cradled in strings, with solos by Sara then Dave, closely shadowed by the string quartet.

Then there’s a pizzicato strings interlude, followed by John’s pizzicato bass solo, backed by bowing string quartet.

Dave’s guitar is lucent and luminous throughout the album, as he negotiates both more adventurous harmonies than in his usual jazz-blues settings and brings sustained lyricism to a couple of Brazilian inspired tracks. Pat Metheny was right when he recently cited Dave as one of his guitar contemporaries currently “at the top of his game.”

The Pasquale Grasso Trio plays the late set at Mezzrow most Mondays, in July the 4th & 25th. He will also be at Dizzy’s Club on August 22. Dave Stryker’s Quartet, with Julian Shore, John Patitucci and Brian Blade, is at Birdland on July 5-9, joined by a string quartet July 7-9.

ANTOINETTE MONTAGUE: A Joyful Experience

By Don Jay Smith HEN WE WENT INTO LOCKdown in March, 2020, jazz vocalist W Antoinette Montague was already

streaming jazz and blues to people sitting at home. As she explains, “I was one of the first jazz educators to use Zoom back in January, 2020, with my Marymount College students. And because of that, it was easy for me to be one of the first to bring jazz and blues to listeners via Zoom.”

As a result, the singer, who has shared the stage with jazz artists such as Benny Powell, Wycliffe Gordon, Christopher McBride, Bernard Purdie, Mulgrew Miller, Winard Harper, John Di Martino, Wynton Marsalis and Frank Wess, stayed extremely busy during the pandemic, teaching, mentoring and performing.

“I recognized that, as jazz educators and performers, we needed to use this great music as a way of helping people heal. We were playing jazz and blues as a means of service, not for self-service,” she continues.

That is why she is so highly regarded as a vocalist, educator and mentor. She is Senior Vocal Instructor for the Jazz Power Initiative, an adjunct at Marymount College and The New School, a teacher at the Newark School of the Arts, and singing instructor for Jazzmobile at the Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music.

About her role as an educator, Antoinette says, “There are many skills that these young people learn that are applicable to life. I hope I’m preparing my students for their futures because most of them will pursue a career other than music.”

Even more, she is very active in community affairs as a member of the Board of the Duke Ellington Center for the Arts in New York, Advisory Board Chair for International Women in Jazz, and on the Community Advisory Board at WBGO. If that doesn’t keep her busy enough, Antoinette is also the CEO of Jazz Woman to the Rescue, a nonprofit foundation which encourages the donation of musical instruments for young people. She has been recognized for her activism with many accolades and awards, including most recently “Jazz Women of Courage.”

Antoinette is best known as a dynamic vocalist whose high energy and range of song choices keep audiences totally engaged. “I think my music is, as Duke Ellington said, beyond category because I

draw on the different forms that influenced me growing up, and I interpret them as a jazz and blues singer.” She explains, “My mother loved Ella Fitzgerald, but I also loved Louis Armstrong, Aretha Franklin, the Clara Ward Singers, and Nat King Cole. Later I was mentored by Carrie Smith and Etta Jones.”

New York and New Jersey audiences have four opportunities to hear Antoinette’s interpretations of many great songs including “I Loves You, Porgy,” “Natural Woman,” “Who Taught You That,” and “Up Jumped Spring,” beginning on Saturday, July 9, when Jazzmobile presents Summerfest at MacDonough Street in Brooklyn, then at Grant’s Tomb on July 13, again with Jazzmobile.

Later in the month, Antoinette performs music from the Great American Songbook in A Night of Jazz and Soul with Antoinette Montague at the Newark Museum. The next night, she heads to Morristown and the Morris Museum’s Back Deck. As the Morris Museum touts, “Antoinette Montague doesn’t give concerts, she gives an experience. And there is no better place to experience her jazz phenomenon.” That’s why she calls her group The Antoinette Montague Experience.

“People come to see us not only for great jazz and blues,” she adds, “but also for the total joy of the show.” And joy it is. Not only is Antoinette a powerful vocalist, she has an exuberant stage presence, and her happiness is infectious. Her group—usually consisting of pianist Danny Mixon, bassist Melissa Slocum, saxophonist Peter Valero, and tap dancer AC Lincoln— shares that joy. Everyone is having a wonderful time as musicians and human beings, and audiences are drawn in immediately. continued on page 22

Hailing from New Jersey, she grew up listening to salsa, R&B and church music, and earned a degree from New Jersey City University where she studied with jazz vocalist Roseanna Vitro and opera singer Donna Connolly. Since then, she has honed her talents and earned praise from audiences and critics. Reviewer Thomas Cunniffe called her 2019 debut CD, Soulful Days, “one of the most stunning debut albums in recent memory.” She and her husband, trombonist Rob Edwards, just released It Had To Be You available through Bandcamp. She and Rob play at Room 623 in Harlem on July 1, and at New Jersey’s Greenwood Gardens on July 22. DJS ANDREA WOLPER SAINT PETER'S CHURCH / JULY 3; PANGEA / JULY 13 With proven artistry in spontaneous singing and reinventing well-worn material, Andrea Wolper has always been one-of-a-kind. Born in California, she studied with Dominique Eade, performed in local churches, staged residencies, recorded and expressed herself in a personalized manner. Her work with bassist/husband Ken Filiano, a follower and friend of the late pianist Connie Crothers, and her career as an arranger of original material set her apart. She’s also a poetry reciter with bassist William Parker. Pianist Eri Yamamoto is the guest at Saint Peter’s. At Pangea, Andrea and New Jersey thespian and WFDU HD2 radio host Mary Conklin play solo, duo and beyond with Ken Filiano and pianist John DiMartino. The singers revive their yin-yang partnership in the Art Lilliard Orchestra. MGN GILLIAN MARGOT THE SIDE DOOR JAZZ CLUB / JULY 9 Soulful and swinging, strong and inventive, the impressive singer Gillian Margot is multi-faceted as any finely cut diamond. The native of Toronto idolized Oscar Peterson and Freddy Cole as her teachers and inspirations. She is also a skilled dancer, African percussionist and multi-instrumentalist. Her duets with pianist Geoff Keezer are memorable. She can scat up a storm, or sing with unbridled passion. Her HipNotic and Rope-A-Dope label CDs Black Butterfly and Power Flower showcase soul, pop and jazz songs done her way, and only partially comprises her repertoire. Gillian is as able and likely to sing a Joni Mitchell, Carmen McRae, Aretha Franklin or Stevie Wonder tune as a reharmonized standard. She is backed by keyboardist Andy Ezrin, guitarist Nate Radley, bassist Richie Goods, and drummer Ryan Sands. MGN SANTI DEBRIANO SMALLS JAZZ CLUB / JULY 15-16 The Panamanian-born veteran of the upright bass, Santi Debriano was raised in Brooklyn, schooled at Union College, Wesleyan, and the New England Conservatory.

He was taught by Miroslav Vitous. A sideman, leader, extraordinary soloist, he has flown under the radar. Recordings for the High Note/Savant, Evidence, Freelance and Truth Revolution labels include the definitive Flash Of The Spirit, Panamaniacs and Circlechant. That he has accompanied the likes of Archie Shepp, Bill Barron, Stanley Cowell, Sam Rivers, Sonny Fortune, Kirk Lightsey, Marcus Belgrave and Jim Pepper speaks to Santi’s open-mindedness. A quintet with pianist Bill O’Connell, flutist Andrea Brachfeld, and saxophonist Justin Robinson is up on the 15th, while the octet with Andrea and T.K. Blue plays on the 16th. MGN T.K. BLUE BROTHERS SMOKEHOUSE / JULY 15; SMALLS JAZZ CLUB / JULY 16 For many, the multi-reed virtuoso T.K. Blue rose to prominence through his threedecade collaboration with Randy Weston. Indeed, T.K.’s efforts proved indispensable to Weston’s vision, as the saxophonist drew upon the full range of music of the African diaspora to craft some of the most striking music in modern jazz with Weston. In his solo projects, T.K. has held this same ethos, embracing musical traditions of Senegal, crafting Afro-Cuban takes of Charlie Parker’s material, and even incorporating instruments like the Chinese pipa. July presents two opportunities to see T.K. in action. On the 15th, he appears at Brothers Smokehouse with his BBQ Trio featuring pianist Greg Murphy and drummer George Coleman Jr., and on the 16th, he joins Santi Debriano’s Arkestra Bembe at Smalls Jazz Club. L I G H T VANDERLEI PEREIRA CELLAR DOG / JULY 17; WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY / JULY 19; DOBBS FERRY’S WATERFRONT PARK / JULY 20 A native of Brazil, drummer Vanderlei Pereira played a variety of styles. But after losing his sight to retinitis pigmentosa, he refocused on Brazilian music exclusively.

Since moving to New York in 1988, Vanderlei has made a name for himself with his driving percussion and infectious enthusiasm that proves contagious to everyone around him. He released his long-awaited debut CD with his sextet Blindfold Test, Vision For Rhythm, on Jazzheads last year. Vanderlei’s band is unique. The musicians wear blindfolds while performing some of their most difficult songs, putting themselves in their leader’s shoes. Saxophonist/flutist Thiago Fernandes, pianist Deanna Witkowski, guitarist Paul Meyers, electric bassist Michael O’Brien, and Vanderlei’s wife Susan on percussion and vocals join him. KD PETER BERNSTEIN WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY / JULY 20; SMOKE / JULY 21-24 There are many famous Bernsteins, but Peter Bernstein is in a league of his own. The New York City native is a true veteran of the scene as a recording artist, performer and skilled guitar technician in the swinging mainstream and soulful jazz movements.

He rivals any of the greats, and has added his groove to the music of Sonny Rollins, Lou Donaldson, Dr. Lonnie Smith and David “Fathead” Newman, to name only some.

His current band with organist Larry Goldings and drummer Bill Stewart is heard on the Smoke Sessions CD What Comes Next. Peter is an original who doesn’t cop licks from predecessors, and as pleasing a player as any. July offers two opportunities to hear him as a guest, with Mike LeDonne Groover quartet at WPU on July 20, and with George Coleman quartet at the newly-reopened Smoke on July 21-24. MGN CYRUS CHESTNUT JAZZ FORUM / JULY 22-23; MARCUS GARVEY PARK / JULY 29 Cyrus Chestnut has a beaming smile when he plays piano, as his heart is filled with joy. Cyrus was inspired by his late father, McDonald Chestnut, a church musician and Cyrus’s teacher, to play piano in their church. Cyrus remembers his gospel roots, playing hymns and spirituals on many of his records, though he is just as much at home exploring anything from swing to modal and post-bop, while adding his distinctive touch to his interpretations of favorite jazz standards. Cyrus also has a knack for tackling unexpected material, whether it’s a CD of songs sung by Elvis Presley or inventive reworkings of classical favorites. Cyrus’ new HighNote album, My Father’s Hands, is a fitting tribute to his father and features bassist Peter Washington and drummer Lewis Nash. KD BRIAN CHARETTE THE DJANGO / JULY 22 Brian Charette is a master of the Hammond B3 organ who breaks new ground with his innovative approach to his instrument. While Brian is inspired by many past greats, he has developed a distinctive sound all his own. Brian often shows a sense of humor in his original works and arrangements, while his range of styles seems unlimited. His just-out Cellar Live album, Jackpot, was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio with saxophonist Cory Weeds, guitarist Ed Cherry, and drummer Bill Stewart. It’s a bop session that pays tribute to his favorite organists, featuring originals inspired by their recordings. The CD release party for Jackpot assembles Brian, Ed Cherry, saxophonist Kenny Brooks, and drummer Joe Strasser, and it’s a sure bet to be a full house. KD CHRIS POTTER 92NY / JULY 28 Unlike many colleagues who emerged on the scene in the 1990s, saxophonist Chris Potter did not apprentice primarily in jazz school, but in the band of one of the last active bebop pioneers, trumpeter Red Rodney, who had served his own apprenticeship with Charlie Parker. And therein lies the difference. Chris developed his assured, commanding style on the bandstand with Rodney, and in extended tenures with drummer Paul Motian, bassist Dave Holland, and trumpeter Dave Douglas. He also mastered the bass clarinet, and plays flute, soprano and alto saxes as well as his main instrument, the tenor sax. He is authoritative playing standards with a big band or trading funky grooves in an electric combo. At this concert he shares the spotlight with jazz-rock guitarist Mike Stern, Jazz in July director (pianist) Bill Charlap, bassist Scott Colley, drummer Bill Stewart, and fellow saxophonist Nicole Glover. LAKECIA BENJAMIN’S Belated Ovation

N EARLIER YEARS, THE RELEASE of saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin’s IPursuance: The Coltranes would have pro-

vided a turbo-charged launch into international touring. A profoundly personal and unique approach to the legacy of the Coltranes, Lakecia’s album offered up a genre-defying tour de force that drew evenly from the music of both John and Alice, with extraordinary musicianship and insight. Released in late March, 2020, however, Pursuance: The Coltranes found itself on a new and untested path, unrolling in the early and uncertain stages of a lockdown. As live dates were replaced by a slow and steady burn of increased critical attention and virtual listening sessions, the album ultimately found its way into the hearts and minds of listeners. Two years later, with international touring in full swing, performances alongside legends from Dee Dee Bridgewater to George Clinton, and a new role as Artistic Advisor to Penn Live Arts’ Alice & John: A Coltrane Festival this October, Pursuance is finally earning Lakecia Benjamin the accolades she so richly deserves. The slowly building roll call of critics and outlets praising Pursuance is providing the album with a remarkable extended life.

“When the pandemic shut down touring, the one positive was that I had all this press going for the album,” Lakecia notes.

“It kept momentum moving. With people sitting at home, they were reading the

press I got.” What’s more, the praise accurately captured the exuberant experience of hearing the album. While many Coltrane tributes exist, few stretch as far as Pursuance in establishing a space where Lakecia’s saxophone comingles with Gary Bartz’s biting alto in a burning take of “Liberia,” yet also pairs with Meshell Ndegeocello on a trance-inducing “Om Shanti.”

That expansive view and equal embrace of John and Alice as composers caught not only the critics’ ears. it also brought Lakecia to the top of mind for Penn Live Arts as they prepared for their October series Alice & John: A Coltrane Festival at the University of Pennsylvania. Initially calling Lakecia to join as a performer, the conversation quickly escalated.

“Penn Live Arts invited me to perform and we had a Zoom conversation about what to add to my show,” she explains. “As we started talking more, they saw that I had a lot of ideas, and the dialogue went back and forth. The next day, they called to start having regular Zoom meetings with me as Artistic Advisor.” Indeed, under Lakecia’s guidance, the festival will bring in a remarkable array of artistry and offer programming that pays tribute to John and highlights the remarkable and unique musical works of Alice Coltrane. A tribute from Ravi Coltrane to his parents will coexist with harp virtuoso Brandee Younger exploring Alice’s landmark album Ptah, The El Daoud, and a world premiere commission will engage the Pam Tanowitz Dance Company to perform new works set to Alice Coltrane’s music as performed by Lakecia’s band. It is thrilling, challenging and unique programming that bears the undeniable stamp of Lakecia’s vision.

This month, Lakecia makes a longawaited return to Dizzy’s Club. She last played there for an online-only virtual performance during the pandemic. The upcoming shows not only is an exciting opportunity to catch Lakecia on stage, for New Yorkers they also represent a surprisingly urgent one: her Dizzy’s Club appearances this month mark her final planned shows in New York for the year. Indeed, a forthcoming recording project as well as extensive touring domestically and internationally will keep Lakecia’s schedule fully booked. On top of that, Lakecia also finds herself with a second set of tour dates, joining the all-star Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour band alongside icons like Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kurt Elling and fellow rising stars like Christian Sands.

After the two years of extreme uncertainty, this full-throttle launch into the spotlight marks a long-overdue live ovation for one of the alto saxophone’s exceptional voices. With a new recording project continued on page 22

With all the news about gun control, I was reminded of a story that Jimmy McPartland told me about the gangster days in Chicago during prohibition. Jimmy’s band was playing in a speakeasy. During an intermission, a known killer walked in. He was drunk and angry.

They found out later that his girlfriend had just left him. He looked around for something on which to vent his anger and saw the string bass leaning against the piano. He pulled out his revolver and shot several holes through the bass. Slightly mollified, he went over to Jimmy and asked, “How much for the bass?” It was an old plywood Kay, but Jimmy quickly said, “Oh, that’s an old Italian bass. It’s worth five hundred dollars at least.” The gunsel pulled out a roll of bills, peeled off five hundred and handed the money to Jimmy, and that was that.

Harkening back to a New Orleans-style musical celebration, Antoinette will often begin and end a concert with her band, marching through the audience. This tradition lets everyone know that they are in for a good time. Smiles are everywhere.

She sums it up, saying, “One of the rewarding aspects of performing is to have people return again and again because they enjoyed the show.”

This summer is the time to enjoy Antoinette Montague. She is busier than ever, and she likes it that way.

A Moment You Missed by Fran Kaufman Hot House Contributing Photographer Barrie Kolstein explains it all to bassist Nilson Matta and saxophonist Steve Wilson who were about to play for the Kolstein Musicians Relief Fund in the lobby of the JR Marriott Essex House. Luthier Kolstein, who had just opened a shop in the hotel, asked the musicians to perform in the hotel’s lobby, where invited guests were seated. Needless to say, when the music began, the lobby filled with hotel guests, and foot traffic on Central Park South was slowed by the passers-by who stopped.
