WINNING SPINS

LEADERS WHO PLAY VARIATIONS

of two instruments heard in jazz con siderably less than the reeds, brass, basses, guitars and keyboards provide our albums this month. Yvonnick Prené, a native of Paris, France, plays harmon ica, but not the familiar diatonic one aka the blues harp. He plays the larger, more complex, chromatic harmonica, familiar in jazz from the work of the late Toots Thielemans. Patricia Brennan, who hails from Veracruz, Mexico, plays mallet instruments (vibes and marimba) but adds electronic “manipulation.” Yvonnick’s album features him with a standard piano-bass-drums trio aug mented at times by tenor sax and trum pet. Patricia has assembled a percussion quartet, her mallet instruments and electronics joined by drums, more per cussion, and pizzicato bass.

Listen! , Yvonnick Prené (Sunnyside), showcases Yvonnick’s chro matic harmonica playing at a variety of tempos on a cross section of jazz and pop ular standards and originals. His sound is highly reminiscent of Thielemans, although Yvonnick’s approach is more modern, bebop and post-bop than Toots’ swing-based style. And one reason this album stands out as a winner is the sup porting cast. Yvonnick has an A-list of New York-based, mainstream-modern players, beginning with a stellar rhythm section of pianist Kevin Hays, bassist Clovis Nicolas, and drummer Bill Stewart. They keep everything percolat ing regardless of tempo or rhythmic feel. Also featured on six of the eight tracks is the sterling tenor sax of Dayna Stephens, whose sound meshes pleasing ly with Yvonnick’s harmonica. And although his name is listed first in the personnel on the CD cover, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt appears only on the one sex tet track.

Miles Davis must be a favorite of Yvonnick, as three tracks nod to him. “Dig,” Miles’ early contrafact on “Sweet Georgia Brown,” opens the proceedings at a fast bebop clip, with solos from the leader and Dayna, then a short tran scription of Miles’ original solo by Yvonnick and Kevin before the out cho rus. Jeremy’s trumpet soars on Miles’ “Seven Steps to Heaven,” the leader and Kevin shine in their solos, and Dayna’s tenor rides a fade ending. The trio, with Bill’s brushes, provides a light, fast tempo à la Miles of the standard “How

Am I To Know,” Yvonnick sharing solo space with Kevin and Clovis.

Yvonnick is convincingly lyrical on the two ballads, interacting with Dayna’s tenor on “Just Have Faith” and fronting the trio on “She’s Funny That Way.” His rhythmic originals are catchy, especially the infectious, boogaloo-based “Boosted.”

More Touch , Patricia Brennan (Pyroclastic), is an extremely diverse and iconoclastic approach to what the leader calls a “percussion quartet.” While one might expect such a group to prioritize rhythm, only three or four of the ten selections are heavily rhythmic-based. Many of the others explore tonal and sonic frontiers, including the role of silence, suggestive of such avant-garde composers as John Cage. One of Patricia’s recurring musical gestures is what is notated in Italian as smorzando, notes “dying away.” Two tracks, “More Touch” and “Space for Hour,” apply it in conjunction with silences and electronic manipulations of the vibes that are sug gestive of science fiction film scores.

While the spacey music of those and other tunes strays far from jazz ortho doxy, they often remain intriguing due to the element of surprise. From weird tones and bird-like calls and flutters to oscillating vibes and marimba, they con stantly shift perspective. The dirge-like “The Woman Who Weeps” with its elec tronic sprinkles and trills is engrossing, emotive and strangely hypnotic. “Robbin,” an evocation of winter, then summer, in Robbinston, Maine, is firstrate musical impressionism.

However, the album really takes off when the percussionists hone in on spe cific rhythms, as on the opening burner, “Unquiet Respect,” a reggae and socainspired romp, or “Square Bimagic,” combining a theme inspired by a mathe matical matrix layered over the beats of Cuban son and montunos. There’s also a lilting section in the long “Space for Hour” and formidable Batá drumming on the closing “And There Was Light.”

Yvonnick Prené brings his quin tet to The Django on Dec. 26. Patricia Brennan’s Quartet, with drummer Marcus Gilmore, percus sionist Mauricio Herrara, and bassist Kim Cass, gives an album release concert at The Jazz Gallery on Dec. 9.

CARMEN LUNDY: Songs In The Key Of She

MIAMI-BORN, LOS ANGELESbased vocalist, composer and lyricist Carmen Lundy appears in two shows in her old New York stomping grounds. On Dec. 16, she is going to perform selections from her new Grammy-nominated CD, Fade To Black, at Aaron Davis Hall. The concert, presented through a grant from Chamber Music America, features Carmen backed by pianist/keyboardist Julius Rodriguez, keyboardist/organist Matthew Whitaker, bassists Ben Williams and brother Curtis Lundy, drummer Terreon Gully, and guitarist Andrew Renfroe. On the 17th and 18th, Carmen leads a quartet at The Side Door Jazz Club in Old Lyme, Conn.

All of those musicians, with bassist Kenny Davis instead of Ben, play on Carmen’s recording, along with trum peters Giveton Gelin and Wallace Roney Jr. and tenor saxophonists Camille Thurman and Morgan Guerin. The CD’s 11 compositions, all by Carmen, reflect what she went through during the pandemic: the dying of loved ones, the isolation of lockdown, police brutality, racial unrest, and the spiritual power of love.

erful, evocative “Say Her Name” is a mournful dedication to the parents of the children and young adults killed by the police.

Though Carmen’s cool and caressing contralto is the beacon that shines through on this recording, it is her work as a composer that gives her music the extra dimension that is not heard when a singer is merely singing standards. “The composi tional part of my expression as a jazz vocalist is the most important part of my narrative right now,” Carmen declares. “I want the jazz audience to ask singers to include music of this time in their reper toire.” Carmen draws compositional inspiration from Mary Lou Williams, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Stevie Wonder.

Carmen started playing piano at age 6. She and her brother sang in church with her mother, who also performed in her family group, The Apostolic Singers. “Curtis and I are eleven months apart,” Carmen remembers. “We benefited from going to church seven days a week, and from having a mother who sang beautifully for her entire life with the same five, six, seven or eight women.”

Carmen originally enrolled in the University of Miami to study opera, but switched to jazz at the urging of pianist Dave Roitstein, who is currently the Jazz Program Director at California Institute of the Arts. Carmen was in school with several future jazz stars including Hiram Bullock, Bobby Watson and Pat Metheny. After years of gigging in Miami, Carmen moved to New York in 1978 (she received her degree in 1981), and worked with a

“I could not really ignore the horror of someone being murdered on live TV,” Carmen says. “I couldn’t ignore watching people explode into the streets behind [those atrocities] when we were deep into a pandemic, or having to say goodbye to a young brother who didn't get the vaccine … having to say goodbye to his sister, hav ing someone dear and close be diagnosed with cancer, or having to address the polit ical social issues. So I decided not to look the other way.”

The selections on Fade To Black – the follow-up to her 2021 Grammy-nominated album Modern Ancestors – are the musical manifestations of what Carmen saw and felt during the pandemic. They range from the elegiac opening number, “Shine a Light,” the bouncy “So Amazing,” and the rhythmically complex “Lonesome Blue Butterfly” to “Daughter of the Universe,” a quiet storm praise song to the power of the sacred feminine. “Ain’t I Human” is a pas sionate, Coltranesque composition inspired by freedom fighter Sojourner Truth’s suffrage era speech, and the pow

SPOTL

THE ANDERSON BROTHERS 59E59 THEATERS / DECEMBER 1-4 AND 6-11

For more than a decade, Peter and Will Anderson have been attracting well-deserved attention. Identical twins, they both play sax and clarinet, are composers and arrangers, lead their own groups and often appear together. They hold degrees from Juilliard, were called “virtuosos” by The New York Times, and have headlined at the world’s top places including the Blue Note, the Kennedy Center and the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Their newest creation, The Journey of Jazz, traces 100 years of jazz from New Orleans to Broadway, blending live music, narration and film. The twoweek run showcases music by Louis Armstrong, George Gershwin, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Musicians include trum peters Bruce Harris and Wayne Tucker, pianist Dalton Ridenhour, bassist Neal Miner, and drummer Paul Wells. DJS

KURT ELLING / BIRDLAND

DECEMBER 1-3 AND 7-10

Vocalist Kurt Elling stands atop the heap as one of the greatest of all time. Whether commanding a treasure of the Great American Songbook or cascading onto a new musical horizon, Kurt demands that his audience respond to his vocal delivery. In 1995, Kurt began his association with Blue Note Records with his album Close Your Eyes, which was nominated for the 38th Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. Subsequent recordings brought additional acclaim with Grammy nomi nations and jazz industry praise. Kurt’s most recent release is 2021’s SuperBlue, with Downbeat stating, “From the downbeat of the strutting opening title track, it’s clear that this is Elling as you’ve never heard him before.” Kurt is joined by Danilo Perez on Dec. 1-3, then brings his quartet for a program of holiday classics on Dec.7-10. BUSTER WILLIAMS SMOKE JAZZ CLUB /

DECEMBER 1-4

Buster Williams has been one of the most in-demand bassists during his decades-long career, which began in his teens. He is known for his thick tone and his ability to adapt to any setting. Buster is a talented improvisor who creates unique textures as he interacts with his fellow players, revealing new facets of the music. He turned 80 last spring, but he is staying busy performing, composing and arranging. Buster’s band at Smoke includes alto saxophonist Steve Wilson, pianist George Colligan, vibra phonist Stefon Harris, and drummer Lenny White, all of whom have played on some of the bassist’s earlier CDs. Buster's next release, due in early 2023 on Smoke Sessions, will feature the same rhythm section with Stefon, vocalist Jean Baylor, and saxophonist Bruce Williams. KD

HOT SARDINES SOPAC / DECEMBER 1

In 2007, singer/songwriter Elizabeth Bougerol and pianist Evan Palazzo met and shared mutual admiration for Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller, eventually forming a band and taking advantage of the hot jazz revival. Since then, their popularity has increased rapidly, leading to nine releases, worldwide touring, and 60 million plus streams. WBGO critic Nate Chinen wrote that “not many bands have seized the post millennial early-jazz spotlight with as much gusto.” Their joy is infectious. They write and perform songs based on the music of Armstrong, Waller, Django Reinhardt, Monk, Prima and others. This show is billed as a “razzle dazzle celebration” featuring holiday favorites and originals by Elizabeth and Evan with trumpeter Paul Brandenburg, reed player Ben Golder-Novick, trombonist J. JAZZ FORUM / DECEMBER 2-3

Edmar Castañeda has been forging a new place in jazz for the harp since he came to this country from his native Colombia in 1994. Playing a Colombian version of the classical harp, Edmar has demonstrated that the instrument can indeed be a preemi nent jazz voice. Emphasizing guitar-like plucking rather than the sweeping strums of classical harp, Edmar also manages to simultaneously play bebop-like lead lines while contributing rhythm and bass parts to the proceedings, so his groups don’t need a bassist. The quartet on his latest CD, Family, features his harp with soprano saxo phonist Shlomi Cohen, drummer Rodrigo Villalón, and vocalist Andrea Tierra. The music ranges from straight-ahead jazz tunes to pieces derived from the folk traditions of South America. Edmar is leading a quartet at the Jazz Forum. GK

RICH PERRY SMALLS JAZZ CLUB / DECEMBER 2-3

If you’ve seen the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra over the past three decades, you’ve heard Rich Perry, their first chair tenor saxophonist since 1991. That is just one facet of Rich’s career, as he has recorded 25 CDs as a leader for SteepleChase and many more as a co-leader or sideman. A brilliant soloist who has explored standards, classic jazz works, and Brazilian songs, Rich is a master of phrasing, allowing the music to breathe regardless of the tempo. Rich is composing a lot more music in recent times, as heard on his last several albums. Rich is joined by some of his frequent collabora tors – pianist Gary Versace, bassist Jay Anderson, and drummer John Riley – all of whom appear on Rich’s most recent release, Everything Happens (SteepleChase). KD

GREG ABATE DEER HEAD INN / DECEMBER 3

Massachusetts native Greg Abate is best known for his fluid, energetic approach to the alto saxophone while he also masters tenor, baritone and soprano saxophones plus flute. After two years touring with Ray Charles and a later stint with the revived Artie Shaw Orchestra, Greg focused on leading his own groups. He is a prolific composer with a love of using contrafacts, and his songs prove to be stimulating launch pads for improvisation. A few years ago Greg signed with Whaling City Sound, an artist-cen tered label which gives him ample opportunities to showcase his writing and musi cianship. Greg is playing alto saxophone for this booking, and his band includes pianist Bill O’Connell, bassist Harvie S, and drummer Jason Tillman. Greg’s quartet also plays the following night at Jazz Forum. KD

JUDY NIEMACK

PANGEA / DECEMBER 7

One of the most adventurous vocalists active, Judy Niemack spent the early part of her career working in Europe and recorded with jazz greats like Mal Waldron, Cedar Walton and Kenny Barron. Judy’s stylistic repertoire is extensive, and her infectious voice captures the essence of every song. Whether it is a standard, jazz classic, pop song, or an original composition, she always finds a fresh approach to even the most frequently recorded tunes. Over the past few years, Judy has written lyrics for numer ous jazz instrumentals, especially for her Sunnyside CDs. Judy’s newest album is What’s Love?, featuring pianist Sullivan Fortner, guitarist Peter Bernstein, bassist Doug Weiss, and drummer Joe Farnsworth. Judy’s band at Pangea includes pianist Jeb Patton, bassist Jay Anderson, and drummer Evan Sherman. KD

LASZLO GARDONY BIRDLAND THEATER / DECEMBER 8

Budapest-born pianist Laszlo Gardony returned to his geographic and musical roots on his newest album, Close Connection (Sunnyside), his 14th recording as a leader since arriving in the U.S. in 1983. He weaves in Central European folk music ele ments, as well as the hard-driving prog rock groove he fancied as a young listener. This modern jazz project includes six collective improvisation pieces with bassist John Lockwood and drummer Yoron Israel, his two most-trusted musical accomplices. For this release celebration, they play mostly Laszlo's compositions plus one new tune. Don't be surprised if they veer off on a spontaneous improv piece. Their remark able chemistry from working together in Boston for 20 years is sure to be on full display. KF

MATT WILSON’S CHRISTMAS TREE-O DIZZY’S CLUB / DECEMBER 20

Matt Wilson has never been constrained or limited by his drum kit; he’ll play anything in range of his sticks, mallets or brushes. Performing with the Herbie Nichols Project in the basement of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) back in the ‘90s, Matt gravi tated from his kit to a cafeteria chair, attacking it rhythmically with his sticks. Other percussive targets have included cymbal and mic stands and the strings inside a piano. Released in 2010, Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O (Palmetto) is a classic, quirky, unique jazz holiday album. The trio from that recording – Matt on drums; Jeff Lederer, reeds; and Paul Sikivie, bass – reconvene for this annual Christmas gig. Their approach to chestnuts like “Winter Wonderland” and “Hallelujah Chorus” as well as surprises such as “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” is resolutely hard-core, reminiscent of Sonny Rollins or Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Anne Phillips: No Time To Rest

“I became part of a very hip singing group when in high school which is what led me to a life in jazz,” Anne explains. She studied music at Oberlin College where she once opened for Brubeck, a serendipi tous pairing that began a lifelong friend ship. Moving to New York as a young woman, she played piano and sang wher ever she could, eventually becoming a firstcall singer.

Back then she worked in advertising, where she wrote and arranged for compa nies such as Pepsi, Revlon and Sheraton, and sang background vocals and worked on demos for artists such as Carole King, Burt Bacharach and Neil Diamond.

Anne’s first album, Born to be Blue (Roulette), was praised by Rex Reed as “a classic collection that no serious music lover should be without,” and includes such songs as “There Will Never Be Another You” and “Saturday Night Is the Loneliest Night of the Week.”

Her 2000 recording Anne Phillips Live at the Bakery (Conawag Records) revisited some of the tunes from her first release such as “Easy Street” and “Born to be Blue,” and featured the music of saxophon ist Kindred, pianist Roger Kellaway, and bassist Chuck Berghofer. Critic Jonathan Widran called it “a blend of heartfelt inti macy and Broadway style wit, joy and heartbreak.”

WHEN

The Jazz Nativity in the mid-80s, she had no idea that it would become an annu al tradition. And yet it has! The original music was written by Anne with composi tions by her late husband, Bob Kindred, and Dave and Iola Brubeck. The sound track recording featured jazz icons Lionel Hampton, Dave Brubeck and Tito Puente with the television journalist Charles Kuralt as the host.

“I don’t know why I was asked to write the music, but I did and it enthralled musi cians and audiences right away,” Anne says. “Hamp loved being a part of it and would never even ask to be paid! Some artists turned down much better pay just to be part of The Jazz Nativity.”

This popular retelling of the Christmas story has featured many big names includ ing Clark Terry, Jon Hendricks, Dr. Billy Taylor, Jimmy Slyde, Harold Nicholas, Wycliffe Gordon, Houston Person plus many others. Dr. Billy Taylor on CBS Sunday Morning observed that “by the end of The Jazz Nativity, you know you have been through something wonderful” and the Chicago Tribune’s Howard Reich called it “utterly entertaining.”

Her most recent release, Ballet Time (CD Baby), features her singing with Dave Brubeck on “In Your Own Sweet Way,” with Marian McPartland on “In the Days of Our Love,” and with Dave Frishberg on “You Are There.” AllMusic critic Ken Dryden observed that “there’s never a dull moment in this delightful musical scrap book.”

This new version of The Jazz Nativity merges jazz and opera in a fresh, swinging way with the roles of the Three Kings played by drummer Bobby Sanabria, tap dancer Maurice Chestnut, and trumpeter Ingrid Jensen. They are joined by soprano Cassandra Douglas as the Archangel, the Royal Bopsters as the voices, tenor David Gordon and baritone Sam McDonald as the shepherds, and a band comprised of Charlie Caranicas on trumpet, Art Baron on trombone, Jon Gordon and Scott Robinson on reeds, Adam Asarnow on piano, Dean Johnson on bass, Tim Horner on drums, and Chembo Corniel on congas. Pianist Arturo O’Farrill, accordionist Eddie Montero, and tap dancers Jaden and Ellis Foreman are special guests.

Anne adds, “It is also very important for people to know how to become sponsors for The Jazz Nativity Children’s Project which makes it possible for children to experience jazz through this show. It’s through the Kindred Spirits Foundation.”

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROW

Bill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links.

Phil Seamen was a well-known British drummer about whom many bizarre stories have been told. The most famous took place in a London theater. Phil had nodded off in the pit during a long bit of dialogue, and when he awoke, he thought he heard his cue to strike a loud gong. He struck it. Then, as everyone looked at him, he realized he was in the wrong place in the score. He promptly stood up and announced, “Dinner is served.”

On Facebook, Rod Baum posted this story: The late Adrian Kerridge (Lansdowne Studio, London) was working on his desk (board) one day and heard a commotion outside the studio door. The studio was one level below the surface at Lansdowne House. Bang! Crash! And the door was flung open. He turned to see Phil Seamen with a cymbal case under his arm. Phil said "Where's the effin’' band then?" Adrian replied, "Next week, Phil, next week."

wide variety of musicians including Kenny Barron, Ray Barretto, Walter Bishop Jr. and Ronnie Matthews. She released her debut album, Good Morning Kiss, in 1985 and moved to Los Angeles in 1991.

Carmen’s artistry extends beyond music. She is a videographer, and her doc umentary, Nothing But The Blood: The True Story Of The Apostolic Singers of Miami , premiered at the DTLA Film Festival in Los Angeles in September. She is also a visual artist. Her artwork graces the album cover of Fade To Black, and her sculptures were shown at the Shifting The Narrative: Jazz and Gender Justice exhibit at Detroit’s Carr Center in October. She sees her artwork as a way for her to renew her music with new vitality.

“I think that over time, I needed to get away from the music,” Carmen confesses. “It’s a part of knowing and learning who you are, and coming back fresh.”

Carmen Lundy performs at Aaron Davis Hall on Dec. 16, and at The Side Door Jazz Club on Dec. 17-18.

Anne and Bob Kindred formed Kindred Spirits, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, almost 30 years ago in an effort to encourage young people to learn more about the Great American Songbook and jazz. Through this remarkable venture, they have co-produced The Jazz Nativity annually, as well as educated young singers through the Kindred Spirits Children’s Jazz Choirs.

Never one to sit still, Anne has been on the faculty of NYU’s Jazz Department, Music Director for St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, and was a National Trustee of NARAS, the Recording Academy. As she says, “I still sing, teach, compose and run the family foundation.”

Clearly, she still finds joy in life and has no time to rest.
