Hello Readers,
In this issue, we immerse ourselves in the many dimensions of Maldives hospitality — from the boardrooms where vision is shaped, to the serene shores where wellbeing is redefined.
Our Main Story explores how the Maldives is embracing an evolved form of wellness tourism — immersive, inclusive, and individualised. Once centred on spas and yoga, wellness now extends to every touchpoint of the guest journey, weaving together nature, culture, and care.
Our conversations dive deep into leadership and innovation: Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Tourism and Environment, reflects on the delicate balance between tourism growth and environmental stewardship; Ibrahim Hamdy, Founder of Sarah International, brings decades of expertise in delivering world-class hospitality solutions; Olivier Moies-Delval, General Manager of SO/ Maldives, shares how bold design, inspired dining, and a people-first approach define the resort’s unique luxury. The ocean, as ever, remains at the heart of the Maldives’ story. In

For this edition of Conversation, we are honoured to speak with H. E. Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Tourism and Environment.
With a background spanning infrastructure, climate, and now tourism, his leadership reflects a deep commitment to sustainable development.
In this interview, Minister Thoriq shares his perspective on balancing tourism growth with environmental protection, the Maldives’ role in global climate action, and what it takes to build a resilient future for Small Island Developing States.
Hotel Insider: Minister Thoriq you’ve been in public service in different roles, from infrastructure to climate and now tourism; what personally drives your passion for environmental protection and sustainable development in the Maldives?
Thoriq Ibrahim: My commitment is rooted in my personal experience and observation. There is a direct link between our environment and our existence as an island nation. My work across different public service roles has consistently reinforced the critical importance of sustainable development.
As an island nation, we face the ongoing realities of coastal erosion, coral bleaching events, and erratic weather patterns. These are not abstract concepts for us, they are a part of our daily lives. This understanding extends to the broader context of our unique geography as a low-lying atoll nation which makes us more vulnerable to climate change. This position provides a clear perspective on the urgency required to address these issues, for Maldives and Small Island Developing States.
Hotel Insider: As Chairperson of the Global Council on SDG 13: Climate Action,
how are you deploying this platform to influence both domestic policy and global climate dialogues, especially for small island nations on the frontline of climate change?
Thoriq Ibrahim: My priority is to ensure that the unique perspectives and urgent needs of the most vulnerable nations, particularly Small Island Developing States, are consistently represented and heard.
We continue to advocate for increased climate finance that is both accessible and equitable for SIDS. We consistently emphasise to the international community that a significant portion of historical emissions originated from developed nations, which accentuates their responsibility to support our adaptation and mitigation efforts.
We in Maldives also make a point to lead by action. For instance, H.E. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has set a significant goal to generate 33% of the nation’s electricity through renewable energy by 2028. Achieving this requires substantial financial support and strategic investment, especially when considering the logistical challenges presented by our dispersed island geography.
Hotel Insider: You've championed the operationalisation of the BBNJ Treaty. What role do you see the Maldives playing in developing equitable ocean governance beyond national jurisdictions?
Thoriq Ibrahim: The BBNJ Treaty is a significant milestone for sustainable ocean governance. As one of the first nations

to ratify it, the Maldives aims to actively contribute to its effective implementation. We believe the Maldives has a crucial role in shaping how this treaty is operationalised, particularly by ensuring that the specific needs and vulnerabilities of SIDS are fully recognised within global marine governance frameworks.
This effort is about extending the principles of sustainable management and conservation, which are fundamental to our own vital fisheries and tourism sectors, to the high seas. We are dedicated to building capacity among developing nations to effectively manage these shared marine resources, fostering strong international cooperation and scientific collaboration.
Hotel Insider: With a record-breaking year for tourist arrivals, how do you plan to balance economic targets like the 2.3 million visitors with environmental sustainability?
Thoriq Ibrahim: The Maldives' global reputation as a premier sustainable tourism destination is intrinsically linked to our environment. Balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability is then a core objective and key priority for us. Our pristine environment is a foundational asset, and its protection remains paramount.
While targeting 2.3 million visitors this year, building on 2 million in 2024, we carefully consider infrastructure development. Growth is managed through stringent environmental impact assessments for new projects and by incentivising greener resort practices, including renewable energy, improved waste management, and water conservation.
Our industry has a history of incorporating environmental safeguards, from sewerage treatment plants to plastic reduction efforts. We continue to work with industry partners, island communities, and other stakeholders to embed sustainability into our tourism industry. I believe we have had quite a bit of success on this front, though there is more that we can still do.
Hotel Insider: What would a truly supportive and accessible financing model for SIDS look like in your view?
Thoriq Ibrahim: I believe that a truly supportive and accessible financing model for Small Island Developing States must fundamentally differ from traditional approaches. We need to acknowledge that SIDS are disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis while simultaneously carrying heavier debt burdens. Therefore, I
have consistently advocated for changes in the modalities and architecture of the global climate and environmental finance system. One that takes into account the unique vulnerabilities of SIDS, and one that helps to achieve our climate and environmental goals without drawing us into debt.
Ultimately, the goal is to provide predictable, flexible, and sufficient funding that enables SIDS to implement ambitious adaptation and mitigation plans without incurring unsustainable debt, particularly given the critical need for rapid disbursement during increasingly frequent climate-induced
“We must accelerate our transition to renewable energy, invest in climateresilient infrastructure, and ensure environmental conservation remains central to development. The choices we make today will determine the Maldives' future by 2040 and beyond.”
disasters.
Hotel Insider: How are private sector partnerships and protected area efforts being aligned with community needs, beyond just meeting global targets?
Thoriq Ibrahim: Our approach to environmental conservation, particularly involving private sector contributions and the management of natural areas, centres on meeting the needs of our local communities. It is about ensuring these initiatives genuinely foster local ownership and that the benefits of safeguarding our natural environment are directly shared with those who live within and around these vital spaces.
To achieve this, we are developing collaborative management models for our natural reserves. This involves working closely with local communities, providing them with necessary training and resources, and ensuring they have a direct voice in decision-making processes.
We are expanding the number of sustainably managed sites and exploring innovative
ways for these areas to generate income that directly supports local residents. Our focus is on building resilient local economies where communities naturally see environmental protection as a clear path to their own prosperity and a better quality of life. This cultivates a deep sense of shared responsibility and stewardship among our people for our natural heritage.
Hotel Insider: If we fast-forward to 2040, what do you hope the Maldives will look like in terms of climate resilience, tourism innovation, and ocean conversation and what decisions today are most critical to realising that vision?
Thoriq Ibrahim: By 2040, we aim to further enhance our climate resiliency by incorporating both nature based solutions and adaptive infrastructure. We also aim to lead the way in low emissions development, and maintain environmental protection and conservation as a cornerstone of our development trajectory.
In tourism innovation, we intend to be recognised for our responsible approach, with the tourism sector operating with a minimal carbon footprint. We anticipate continuous innovation shaping how we enhance guest experiences, while minimising environmental impact.
For ocean conservation, we expect our waters to support thriving marine ecosystems, reflecting decades of consistent protection and restoration efforts. Our marine protected areas would be extensive and effectively managed, supported by robust scientific research and sustainable use. The Maldives would also contribute actively to equitable ocean governance.
To realise this vision, we must all play our part. Both individually and collectively. We must also ensure that our policies today support what we wish to see tomorrow. This means accelerating our transition to renewable energy, investing in adaptive and resilient infrastructure, and centering environmental conservation. We should also continue to be a leader and a voice for SIDS. And, most importantly, we must trust that such a future is achievable if we work towards it.
Hotel Insider: Thank you Minister Thoriq, this was thought-provoking.

There is no pathway to long-term development in Small Island, Large Ocean States like the Maldives that does not put the ocean at its centre. The Blue Economy is not an alternative - it is the imperative.
*By Jonathan Reeves, Senior Climate & Energy Adviser, Indo-Pacific Regional Department, UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Nicholas David Low, British High Commissioner to Maldives, and Enrico Gaveglia, UNDP Resident Representative in the Maldives.
With just 115 square miles of land scattered across 35,000 square miles of ocean, few of its sand-fringed, palm-draped islands stretch beyond 300 acres, yet threaded together, the land and sea are the fabric of Maldivian identity: a relationship of profound interconnectedness between people, land, and sea.
For years, the country has made significant strides in expanding its infrastructure and connectivity. While this growth has unlocked critical connectivity and economic opportunity, it also highlighted the need to balance progress with preservation. The country’s most precious asset - its natural capital, including coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangrove forests - now faces growing pressures. These ecosystems, which sustain island communities and biodiversity, are increasingly vulnerable and in need of renewed care and protection.
For Large Ocean States like the Maldives, the economy is closely tied to ocean ecology, with nearly 25% of marine life residing in coral reefs. These reef systems support key industries—tourism and fisheries—contributing at least 20% to annual productivity and providing coastal protection valued at up to 8% of GDP. Yet, the Indian Ocean has lost 30% of its live coral cover in recent decades, a trend echoed in Maldivian waters. In a nation where 99% of its territory is ocean, this represents both an environmental and economic crisis.
To truly thrive, the Maldives must shift from an extractive, carbon-intensive model (with a heavy reliance on imported diesel) to a regenerative, inclusive one. In other words, going deeply blue.
Change is swelling in the tides of the

Maldivian economy.
95% of all registered businesses in the country are micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and it is these local entrepreneurs - fishermen, women-led cooperatives, youth innovators - who keep the economy afloat. Yet, for too long, their potential has been constrained by limited access to finance, scarce market opportunities, and the towering dominance of tourism.
But what if the same ocean that has defined Maldivian life for centuries could also define its future prosperity?
The Government of Maldives, UNDP, and the UK Government are working hand-in-hand to launch an initiative that puts the power of financial innovation in the hands of the private sector and plants the seeds for a more diverse, resilient economy that thrives beyond tourism.
We will do this by nurturing MSMEs in eco-friendly sectors—the vision is to turn blue dreams into bankable realities.
We start with a powerful idea: that finance can be a force for good—not just profit. Through a pioneering blended finance model, the Maldives is unlocking new streams of capital for climate-smart, nature-positive enterprises.
It works by partnering with banks and financial institutions to share investment risks, directing funding toward MSMEs that are innovation-ready but fall outside the criteria of traditional lending. So, these doors are open for ventures like sustainable fisheries, seaweed farming, marine biotechnology, and circular aquaculture—sectors rich with potential, but where access to finance is often constrained by traditional risk assessments of novel ideas. And this isn’t untested. Globally, blended finance has already mobilized over USD 160 billion in the past decade, with increasing focus on
Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like the Maldives. It’s a model proven to work—now being tailored to the unique needs of island economies.
But the vision goes deeper than finance. Real, lasting change depends on building the scaffolding around these enterprises: stronger research capabilities, smarter policies, and more responsive institutions. By equipping MSME agencies, aligning with global environmental standards, and embedding innovation at every level, the initiative is laying the groundwork for a future where both businesses and ecosystems can thrive— together.
The Maldives’ openness to pursue a “Blue Economy” is promising and will demand a whole-of-government, whole-of-society approach. Success will require systemic transformation – optimizing legislation, incentivising financing, nurturing a new generation of entrepreneurs and a redefining of success to incorporate sustainability into the conventional risk-return equation of finance
Maldives has a rare opportunity – not just to mitigate the ecological consequences of past growth models, but to lead both a SIDS, and a regional movement that embraces pathways aligned with nature that capitalise on the value of their natural assets. A movement where economic success is measured not just in numbers, but in reefs restored, emissions reduced, and communities empowered.

Ibrahim Hamdy brings over 35 years of extensive experience in the hospitality industry, having built a remarkable career across multiple countries and top international brands. Beginning his journey at 16 years, Hamdy developed a keen understanding of hospitality’s nuances, which laid the foundation for his entrepreneurial success.
Today, as the founder of Sarah International, he focuses on delivering authentic, high-quality products directly to luxury resorts in the likes of One&Only, Velaa Private Island, Hurawalhi, Kudadoo, Conrad, and Cheval Blanc. His dedication to quality has earned him longstanding relations with top-tier resorts.
Hotel Insider: First, tell us about yourself and your experience in the industry. What inspired you to launch
Sarah International?
Hamdy: My journey in the hospitality industry began when I was just 16 years old, and it’s been a rewarding 35-year career so far. I started in safari tours from 1992 to 1995, then spent a year with Club Med. In 1997, I joined Hilton, where I worked until 2002.
That year, I moved to Japan—a major turning point in my life. The first year was incredibly challenging; I didn’t speak Japanese and initially declined a job offer from Hilton. But I was determined to adapt.
After learning the language, I received an offer from Conrad Tokyo. It was their debut in Japan, and I joined as assistant restaurant Manager at a Michelin-starred restaurant. That experience influenced much of my understanding of world-class hospitality. In 2007, I returned to the Maldives and decided to pursue my dream of entrepreneurship. Together with my wife, we opened our first guesthouse, House Clover Hotel. Then in 2009, I founded Sarah International with the vision of bringing high-quality products and services to the hospitality sector.
The COVID-19 pandemic gave us an unexpected opportunity to pivot and evolve
after a period of being a sleeping company. We began supplying directly to local resorts, identifying a gap in the market—many were importing from Singapore, Dubai, or Australia, with no direct sourcing options. That’s when we introduced Kewpie products to the Maldivian market. It was a gamechanger and has since become a core part of our star products.
Hotel Insider: How do you select the different products in your portfolio? What sets you apart from other companies in the market?
Hamdy: That’s a great question. From the very beginning, we’ve been committed to maintaining our independence and integrity in how we operate. We don’t want to rely on middlemen or be anyone’s puppet; we want full control over our distribution. That’s why we work directly with the manufacturers. By buying straight from the source, we handle all communication and sales ourselves, which gives us flexibility, better pricing, and stronger relationships with suppliers.
What truly sets us apart is our focus on authenticity. For example, take Wagyu beef, “Wa” means Japanese and “gyu” means cow, so true Wagyu beef can only come from Japan. We make sure to source it directly from Japan to ensure the quality and authenticity are never compromised.
It’s the same with Kewpie. While Kewpie has factories in various countries, we choose to import directly from Japan. That decision means extra work on our end; everything has to be relabeled in English to meet local regulations, which adds cost and time. But we’re committed to doing it the right way because we believe the quality of the original product is worth the effort.
Hotel Insider: Are there any operational challenges of transporting delicate products like mayonnaise and fresh beef to a geographically dispersed location like the Maldives?
Hamdy: One of the biggest hurdles is labeling and compliance. Every product must meet strict regulatory requirements, and proper labeling in English is mandatory.
"When I first started, we didn’t have salmon, truffle, Japanese rice, or even romaine. Now, top resorts offer world-class ingredients. The Maldives’ hospitality sector has transformed in service, product variety, and awareness far beyond what we imagined decades ago."
This might seem simple, but it often involves back-and-forth coordination and added costs.
Securing import approvals and maintaining cold chain logistics in the Maldives is challenging due to the country's scattered islands, requiring careful planning and dependable partners to ensure product freshness and quality.
We’re still unable to import certain items due to regulatory restrictions, which remains an ongoing challenge. For example, I’ve been working hard on bringing in premium seafood and fresh fish directly from Japan, but the process has been slow due to limitations. Despite that, we’re committed to pushing through because we believe there’s a strong demand for authentic, high-quality ingredients in the Maldivian market.
Hotel Insider: Sarah International was established in 2009. In your opinion, how has the F&B industry in the Maldives changed compared to then and now?
Hamdy: It has changed significantly over the years. Looking back 35 years, the industry was only about 15% of what it is today. When I first started working at a resort, I began as a laborer and was later promoted to a waiter. That’s when my real journey in hospitality began.
Back then, we didn’t have access to premium ingredients like salmon, truffle, or high-quality vegetables. There was no iceberg lettuce, no romaine, no Japanese rice—and the overall variety was extremely limited. But now, almost everything is available. Not every resort has it, of course, but high-end properties like Velaa, The Ritz-Carlton, One&Only Reethi Rah, and Waldorf Astoria, to name a few, offer world-class products and experiences.
In terms of service, education, product variety, and overall awareness, the hospitality industry in the Maldives has transformed a hundredfold.
Hotel Insider: What’s the next chapter for Sarah International?
Hamdy: We’re planning to open a Japanese outlet. We’re not sure when yet, but I believe it will make things easier for everyone, as entering this market is quite challenging. We don’t aim to offer a large number of products, but rather focus on a carefully curated selection of niche items in our portfolio.
Hotel Insider: Is there anything else you would like to add?
Hamdy: I’d like to add that some people still hesitate to reach out to us because we’re a local company. However, everything we’ve committed to, we’ve delivered. We’re currently working with some of the most prestigious resorts, including One&Only, Velaa Private Island, Hurawalhi, Kudadoo, Conrad, and Cheval Blanc. These are the resorts we supply, and we’ve consistently proven our ability to meet high-end demands and deliver exceptional service.
Hotel Insider: Thank you Hamdy, we look forward to seeing how Sarah International grows.

With a career steeped in global luxury hospitality and a flair for the avant-garde, Olivier Moies-Delval brings more than leadership to SO/ Maldives; he brings vision. Known for marrying creativity with purpose, Olivier is reimagining guest experience through immersive design, narrative-driven dining, and people-first culture.
His experience in high-end hospitality across Asia and Europe, combined with a passion for storytelling through space, service, and style, is driving a new era of luxury. One that feels personal, inspired, and effortlessly cool. In this candid conversation, he reflects on reshaping resort culture, inspiring teams, and making meaningful luxury the new standard.
Hotel Insider: With your well-versed global experience, how are you bringing a fresh perspective to the guest experience at SO/ Maldives, a resort already known for its avant-garde flair and fashionforward identity?
Olivier: At SO/ Maldives, my approach to guest experience is driven by innovation, personalisation, and storytelling. Rather than replicating past successes, I focus on observing, listening, and tailoring experiences to match both the brand’s bold, fashion-forward identity and the unique energy of our guests. Over time, I’ve studied how guests interact with the space, what makes them pause, engage, and connect, allowing us to shape experiences rather than follow trends.
For instance, our signature restaurant, Hadaba, goes beyond fine dining, it
immerses guests in storytelling, culture, and shared experiences. By blending luxury, sustainability, and avant-garde creativity, SO/ Maldives delivers not just a stay, but an unforgettable journey, reinforced through strategic collaborations with global tastemakers and eco-conscious innovations that elevate hospitality without compromising style.
Hotel Insider: How do you plan to cultivate a positive and collaborative work environment at SO/ Maldives that reflects your passion for team empowerment and continuous improvement?
Olivier: The success of any guest experience begins behind the scenes. I believe strongly in honesty, performance, and creativity, but above all, in people. I’m not here just to manage a resort; I’m here to support a team, help them grow, and ensure they’re proud of the work they do.
Being Belgian, I often joke that compromise runs in my DNA, it’s the foundation of my leadership style. I lead by listening, valuing diverse perspectives, and working alongside my team rather than above them. One thing I’ve focused on here is taking the time to earn their trust not rushing into change, but building credibility. Together, we’ve started to reshape the culture into something forward-
At SO/ Maldives, my approach is driven by innovation, personalisation, and storytelling. I observe, listen, and shape experiences that align with our fashion-forward identity and guests’ unique energy. Rather than follow trends, we create moments that engage and connect.
looking yet grounded, a team that’s not afraid to try, to learn, and to aim high.
Hotel Insider: How has your leadership style evolved as you've transitioned from managing large-scale properties like Mövenpick Phu Quoc to a more intimate, design-led resort like SO/ Maldives?
Olivier: Transitioning from a large-scale resort to the intimate, design-led SO/ Maldives has been refreshing and even if it may be small in size, the emotional impact runs deep. Here, every detail counts, and every person matters. I’ve returned to the core of hospitality, personal presence, handson leadership, and meaningful connections. Rather than relying on structured systems, I focus on adaptability, storytelling, and tailoring experiences that reflect our avantgarde identity. Leading with observation and collaboration, I ensure both guests and staff feel inspired, valued, and deeply connected, creating an environment where luxury meets authenticity in the most impactful way.
Hotel Insider: How do you balance maintaining the distinct brand identity of SO/ Maldives while implementing creative, guest-centric innovations?
Olivier: At SO/ Maldives, creativity is about finding beauty in relevance, not just being different for the sake of it. As a lifestyle brand with a bold, fashion-forward identity, we have the freedom to push boundaries while staying true to our essence. Every experience we create, from immersive dining at Hadaba, where food becomes storytelling, to personalised services and avant-garde design, must feel authentic, not imposed. By blending innovation with brand-aligned storytelling, we craft moments that inspire, engage, and connect, ensuring SO/ Maldives remains a trendsetter in luxury hospitality. That’s the kind of experience that makes people pause, remember, and come back.
Hotel Insider: Can you share an example of a creative operational challenge you're currently tackling at SO/ Maldives, and your approach to solving it?
Olivier: Navigating a new brand, destination, and evolving operator dynamics at SO/ Maldives required more than refining processes, it demanded a deep understanding of people and perspectives. One of the early challenges was aligning operational realities with brand ambition. SO/ Maldives is daring
by nature, but we had to refine systems and structures to allow that creativity to shine without losing consistency. I spent time with my team, encouraged feedback, and gradually shaped a roadmap that balances performance and authenticity. Adapting to the diverse Maldivian market has been transformative, reinforcing the need for agility, creativity, and cultural awareness while encouraging a forward-thinking, adaptable environment.
Hotel Insider: Given SO/ Maldives’ luxury positioning, how do you plan to drive business growth without compromising exclusivity and personalisation?
Olivier: I don’t see growth and exclusivity as opposing forces. In fact, when thoughtfully executed, exclusivity enhances value. Achieving that, however, requires a clear and focused vision. For us, it’s about sparking desire, not generating volume. We’re not after mass exposure; we’re cultivating meaningful relationships. Through highimpact storytelling, strategic partnerships, and ultra-personalised service, we reinforce our avant-garde identity while ensuring every guest interaction feels authentic, intimate, and deeply meaningful. By staying true to this approach, SO/ Maldives continues to thrive as a premier luxury destination, where business growth comes naturally through loyalty and reputation.
Hotel Insider: How do you see the role of style, art, and storytelling shifting in luxury hospitality, and what unique experiences can guests expect under your leadership at SO/ Maldives?
Olivier: Style and art are no longer merely decorative, they’re emotional touchpoints. Today’s guests want to feel something: inspiration, connection, even surprise. That’s where storytelling comes in. At SO/ Maldives, we blend bold design with soulful narrative. Whether through sunset rituals, curated in-villa moments, or cross-cultural dining experiences, we create space for emotion. Under my leadership, you can expect a deeper, more human connection to luxury, where creativity meets meaning, and every moment is crafted to stay with you long after you leave.
Hotel Insider: Thank you Olivier, for sharing your admirable career with us.

For this edition of Working Women, we had a conversation with Paravee Mavichak, Director of Sales & Marketing at JW Marriott Maldives Kaafu Atoll Island Resort. Paravee shares her remarkable career journey, one of resilience, passion, and a clear vision for inclusive leadership in the world of luxury hospitality.

Paravee is set to redefine resort culture with a balance of strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and fearless ambition. In this candid interview, she reflects on career milestones, the evolving role of women in hospitality, and her commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders.
Hotel Insider: You’ve held leadership roles across some of Marriott’s most recognised properties. How has that experience led you to become the leader you are today at JW Marriott Kaafu Atoll?
Paravee: Every chapter in my Marriott journey has contributed to the leader I am today—from the cultural immersion in Thailand’s northern highlands to overseeing global brand transitions. These roles have deepened my understanding of not just hospitality, but human connection.
At JW Marriott Maldives Kaafu Atoll Island Resort, I carry those experiences forward with a mindset rooted in intentional leadership. I’ve learned that success is never just about metrics—it's about creating an environment where people feel empowered, teams feel connected, and the guest journey is thoughtfully curated from start to finish.
Hotel Insider: What drew you to the Maldives, and how does working in this island destination compare to your previous experiences in Thailand?
Paravee: The Maldives offers a unique canvas—a destination that invites you to slow down, be present, and truly engage with nature and people. This aligns beautifully with the JW Marriott philosophy of well-being and mindful luxury.
Coming from Thailand, where hospitality is deeply rooted in culture and warmth, the transition felt natural. But working in the Maldives challenges me in new ways—logistics, island operations, and a global clientele mean that every detail must be curated with purpose and precision. It’s a dynamic environment that constantly keeps you on your toes—and I love that.
Hotel Insider: As a woman in a senior leadership role, what challenges have you faced in the hospitality industry, and how have you navigated them?
Paravee: From the very beginning, I’ve always been headstrong and a go-getter and driven by a deep belief in my ability to make an impact. Hospitality has always been a passion of mine—creating meaningful experiences, connecting with people from different walks of life, and building environments where others feel seen and cared for. That passion became the foundation for how I approached every role: with intention, resilience, and a desire to grow.
Over the years, I’ve come to understand the power of clarity, consistency, and the ability to recognise people’s potential. I take pride in nurturing talent, tailoring my leadership style to bring out the best in those around me. Whether it’s guiding someone through a new challenge or offering opportunities for growth, I believe in building strong teams by investing in individuals and helping them evolve.
What excites me most is how the industry is transforming. Today, more women are stepping into leadership roles and shaping the direction of hospitality with strength and vision. At Marriott International, there is a deep and ongoing commitment to diversity, inclusion, and leadership development, especially for women. I’m proud to be part of a company that not only embraces these values but also actively builds frameworks for women to succeed.
As a leader, I see it as my responsibility to pay that support forward—to lead with purpose, confidence, and vision while creating the space and structure for others to thrive.
Hotel Insider: Sales and marketing require both strategic thinking and emotional intelligence, how do you balance both, especially in a competitive luxury market?
Paravee: Strategy and emotional intelligence are not opposing forces—they’re complementary. In luxury hospitality, it’s no longer just about product differentiation; it’s about how you make people feel—whether it is your own people or the guests.
At JW Marriott Maldives Kaafu Atoll Island Resort, we approach sales and marketing with a storytelling mindset. Every campaign is designed to spark emotion, build trust, and offer a sense of belonging. At the same time, data and market intelligence guide our decisions. The balance lies in staying curious, listening deeply, and always keeping the guest at the heart of what we do.
Hotel Insider: You’ve overseen major brand transitions, like the rebranding of Le Méridien Chiang Mai. What’s your approach to leading through change?
Paravee: Change is constant—especially in hospitality. My approach is rooted in transparency, collaboration, and purposedriven communication. In my previous role, we weren’t just changing signage—we were redefining an experience, a culture, and a brand promise. That requires alignment at every level, from operations to guest engagement to community impact.
Leading through change also means holding space for uncertainty while guiding teams with clarity and shared vision. When people feel included in the process, they become invested in the outcome.
Hotel Insider: What advice would you
“Women shouldn’t wait for permission to lead. Walk into every room with confidence, speak up, and claim your space. Growth happens when we challenge ourselves, embrace discomfort, and lead with vision, strength, and a deep sense of purpose.”
give to young women aspiring to grow into executive roles in hospitality or sales and marketing?
Paravee: Own your ambition. Don’t wait for permission or the ‘perfect moment’—step into the room with confidence and make your presence count. Too often, young women hold back, thinking they need to be fully ready before they speak up. My advice is show up, speak up, and take charge. Learn everything you can—not just about your role, but about the industry, the brand, and the people you serve. Be fierce in your pursuit of growth.
Surround yourself with people who challenge you and mentors who believe in you. Seek feedback, take risks, and don’t shy away from the uncomfortable, because that’s where true growth happens. And above all, don’t shrink yourself to fit into a mold. Redefine the space. Set the tone. Lead with strength, clarity, and conviction.
Your voice matters, so use it, unapologetically.
Hotel Insider: Looking ahead, what are your goals for JW Marriott Kaafu Atoll and your own career in the next few years?
Paravee: Our goal at JW Marriott Maldives Kaafu Atoll Island Resort is to establish a reputation for thoughtful luxury in the region—where wellness, sustainability, family experiences, and authentic service come together in harmony. We are focused on deepening our connection with key markets like the UK, the Middle East, the CIS & Europe, India, China, Germany; strengthening our storytelling; and expanding our brand partnerships.
Personally, I’m also committed to mentoring the next generation of hospitality leaders, especially women in commercial roles. I see leadership as a continuous journey, and I’m excited for what lies ahead—both for the resort and for my own growth within the Marriott International family.
Hotel Insider: Thank you Paravee, it’s been a pleasure.

Harshal Kumar, the Cluster Executive Chef for Hurawalhi Island Resort and Kudadoo Maldives Private Island, is a celebrated figure in the luxury tourism industry and has been honoured for his culinary prowess with numerous accolades. Harshal is known for his meticulous and innovative endeavours in the kitchen and his individualised and thoughtful approach to guest experiences.
Harshal began his career in hospitality as an industrial trainee at the Indian luxury chain The Claridges Hotels and Resorts, gaining insight through experience in house keeping, reservations and food and beverage. From executive trainee to jr. sous chef, Club Mahindra Holidays & Resorts saw him ascend the ranks in the kitchen. In 2015, Harshal was handling more responsibility as jr. sous chef at Amilla Maldives and by the end of the year had been promoted to sous chef.
It was there that he collaborated with acclaimed celebrity chef, Gordon Ramsay, at his pop-up restaurant, Bread Street Kitchen. Harshal has also worked alongside renowned chefs such as Australian celebrity chef Luke

Mangan and Michelin-starred chef Dominik Kappelar. After a brief stint at Constance Hotels & Resorts, Harshal rose swiftly through the kitchen brigade of Kudadoo Maldives Private Island, becoming Executive Chef in 2022.
Now the Cluster Executive Chef for both Hurawalhi Island Resort and Kudadoo Maldives, Harshal enjoys his responsibilities managing culinary operations and setting the direction for the food and beverage offerings. His approach to curating culinary experiences for his guests is guided by sustainability, consistency and innovation.
Harshal was honoured with a gold medal at the South American Chef Competition, was a representative at the Chef’s Culinary Forum of WACS and was recognised as Chef of the Year at Hotelier Maldives Awards 2024. Held in such high esteem by his peers and contemporaries, Harshal has achieved international recognition. So we, at Hotel Insider, sat down with him for a chat.
Hotel Insider: Your culinary achievements are known far and wide within the industry. So we wondered how it all began for you. Could you elaborate on when and what inspired you into gastronomy?
Harshal: Thank you. My journey into gastronomy started at a very young age, inspired by the rich and diverse flavours of Indian home cooking. My mother’s kitchen was my first classroom — she cooked with so much soul and passion, and that deeply moved me. As I grew, I became fascinated by how food could connect cultures, tell stories, and evoke emotions. I knew early on that I didn’t just want to cook — I wanted to create experiences. That desire led me to pursue formal culinary training and eventually take the leap into the world of professional kitchens.
Hotel Insider: You are now an internationally acclaimed chef who has collaborated with the likes of Luke Mangan, Dominik Kappelar and Gordon Ramsay. How have those experiences contributed to your culinary expertise?
Harshal: Working alongside chefs like Luke, Dominik, and Gordon has been both humbling and transformative. Each one brings a unique philosophy and energy to the kitchen. From
Luke, I learned the value of simplicity and clean flavours. Dominik instilled a strong sense of precision and innovation in my approach. And Gordon, of course, challenged me to maintain excellence under pressure. These collaborations pushed me to refine my craft, elevate my creativity, and most importantly, stay true to my roots while embracing global techniques.
Hotel Insider: How has the luxury culinary landscape evolved throughout the years you have been active and what has been the most exciting development in the field for you?
Harshal: The luxury culinary scene has evolved dramatically. It’s no longer just about exclusivity and presentation — it’s about authenticity, sustainability, and storytelling. Guests now seek experiences that are immersive, personal, and eco-conscious. One of the most exciting developments for me has been the global rise of plant-based fine dining and the focus on hyper-local sourcing. At our properties in the Maldives, we’re working closely with local suppliers and even growing some of our own produce, which allows us to offer freshness and traceability — a luxury in its purest form.
Hotel Insider: As Executive Chef of Hurawalhi Island Resort and Kudadoo Maldives Private Island, what challenges do you face managing the F&B operations of two properties and what experience has inspired you the most?
Harshal: Managing F&B operations for both Hurawalhi and Kudadoo requires immense coordination, precision, and a strong team culture. Each property has a distinct identity — Kudadoo is ultra-luxury and highly bespoke, while Hurawalhi is dynamic and vibrant. Balancing the expectations of two unique guest profiles, while maintaining consistency in quality and innovation, is a daily challenge I thrive on. One of the most inspiring experiences has been crafting completely customised dining journeys for guests at Kudadoo — whether it’s a zero-waste meal or a private overwater tasting menu. Seeing guests emotionally moved by food — that’s what keeps me going.
Hotel Insider: Congratulations on winning a gold medal in the South American Chef Competition, representing the Chef’s Culinary Forum of WACS and winning
"Luxury dining today isn’t just about exclusivity; it’s about authenticity, sustainability, and storytelling. Plant-based cuisine and hyper-local sourcing excite me most. Growing our own produce allows us to offer freshness and traceability, a rare kind of luxury I truly value."
Chef of the Year 2024 at Hotelier Maldives Awards. What competitions or challenges are on the horizon for you next?
Harshal: Thank you so much. Those recognitions have been incredibly motivating. Looking ahead, I’m preparing to represent the Maldives in a global chef summit focusing on sustainability in cuisine. I’m also mentoring a team for an international pastry competition — something close to my heart, as I believe in nurturing the next generation. Additionally, I’m exploring the idea of publishing a cookbook that reflects my journey from India to the Maldives, with recipes that blend tradition with island-inspired innovation.
Hotel Insider: Is there anyone you wish to thank for mentoring or supporting you throughout your illustrious career?
Harshal: Absolutely — I owe much of my growth to my mentors and supporters. My heartfelt thanks go to my early culinary instructors, to the visionary leaders who trusted me with big responsibilities, and to the many chefs I’ve worked with who challenged and inspired me. A special mention goes to my family, especially my parents, for believing in my passion. And finally, to my current team — their hard work, creativity, and dedication are the backbone of everything we achieve at Hurawalhi and Kudadoo.
Hotel Insider: Thank you Harshal for sharing your culinary journey with us.

The evolution of the term “wellness” has dramatically altered the landscape of wellness offerings in the global hospitality industry. What was once limited to spa, yoga and generic sports is now a diverse and manifold arm of tourist destinations. The collective consciousness of travellers was further influenced by the global pandemic of 2020, emphasising the need for holistic wellbeing offerings.

The Maldivian luxury wellness tourism was valued at $1 billion, and the spa sector, at $448 million in 2023, in data collected by The Global Wellness Institute (GWI), the leading non-profit research organisation for the global wellness industry. From digital detoxes to gut health to biophilia to combined modern and ancient therapeutics to personalised movement, the wellness offerings at Maldivian resorts have transformed into immersive and individualised services that tackle our wellbeing as a whole.
Before the boom
The wellness experiences that were offered at Maldivian resorts before the wellness boom over the past decade, were limited to spa facilities and sports and gym facilities. Banyan Tree was one of the first to establish a fully equipped spa, as well as Cocoa Island and Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru. Over the years, resorts like Soneva Fushi incorporated comprehensive wellness experiences into their
luxury offerings and laid the groundwork for wellness tourism in the Maldives.
The concept of “wellness” now encompasses all healthy practices that serve the mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing of a person, while being in balance with the natural world. Sensory treatments have taken on the form of Sound Therapy, Sensory Deprivation Therapy, Binaural Sound Therapy and Reiki Healing. Mindfulness therapies have expanded to include journaling and community building. Physical therapies are no longer limited to simply yoga and massages. Cryotherapy, Chromotherapy, Epigenetic Testing, Red Light Therapy, sleep therapies, IV drips to combat jet lag, cold therapy and more are now found in resorts across our archipelago.
The Maldivian tourism industry integrated

these practices into the overall framework of their establishments and provides travellers the opportunity to enjoy intentional and ecoconscious vacations that nourish their overall wellbeing. Given that our resorts are secluded, peaceful retreats that provide much-needed respite from urban settings, guests now have a diverse range of activities to deepen their connection with nature as they replace social media and coffee with healthier options.
Good health begins in our gut, with proper digestion, immunity, metabolism and a balanced gut microbiome, allowing our bodies to heal and function properly. Consuming healthy ingredients and removing harmful components from our diets is at the heart of the wellness culture. A farm-to-table concept with ethically sourced ingredients is now part and parcel of most resorts.
Organic gardens that grow regional produce, farm limited animals and derive nutrients from kitchen scraps can be found in sustainable resorts such as Soneva Fushi, Gili Lankan Fushi, JW Marriott Maldives, Vakkaru Maldives and more. So can water treatment systems that recycle and produce bottled water for their guests. Ethically sourced fish and other produce make their way onto the tables of most resorts, with fresh and chemical-free ingredients being converted to balanced, nutritious meals.
Most resorts now incorporate inclusive meals into their menus with vegan, lactose-free and gluten-free options, allowing guests with sensitive stomachs to enjoy their vacations without feeling deprived. JA Manafaru provides curated menus in all its restaurants, offering specialised dietary menus at no additional cost, while catering to various dietary lifestyles such as vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, low-carb/keto, or paleo.
Combining modern science and ancient healing
Taking it up a notch, Anantara Kihavah Maldives introduced the Epigenetic Dining concept in 2023. Epigenetic Dining begins with a test involving a hair root sample, which is scanned through a bio profiler,
providing a comprehensive report of the body’s level of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids, fatty acids, antioxidants, and contaminants. Guests then receive a consultation with a wellness expert, who provides a 30 to 90-day plan, along with a detailed report of their test results, offering insight into their dietary profiles.
Joali Being remains the first and only dedicated wellbeing resort, and caters to its guests with an extensive range of treatments and practices that encompass their four pillars - Mind, Skin, Microbiome and Energy, with unique treatments like Cryotherapy and age-old remedies for skin revitalisation. Amilla Maldives’ Javvu Spa offers Sensora Chromotherapy, a multi-sensorial environment combining light, sound and kinaesthetic vibration, and Eastern and Western therapies combined with authentic Maldivian herbal treatments.
Wellness retreats have become a successful trend in the hospitality industry, and Maldivian resorts jumped on the bandwagon to host successful retreats that have now become annual events at some properties. Now in its third year, Soneva Fushi’s Soul Festival brings together a diverse community of wellness enthusiasts and specialists for five transformative days of mindfulness, movement and healing.
OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi, in collaboration with international spa brand ELE|NA, hosted a wellness retreat in June, designed to empower women in their menopausal journey. The Nautilus Maldives recently held a Wellness Awakening festival, a month-long and flexible well-being programme that celebrated Global Wellness Day and International Yoga Day. Hosting renowned wellness practitioners for residencies is yet another trend that gained momentum and continues to be a popular component of wellness tourism in the Maldives. Last year, Patina Maldives hosted celebrated wellness practitioner Yuki Nishikubo, famed for her expertise in Acupuncture, Shiatsu and other holistic healing modalities. Her therapies are tailored to address numerous health concerns, including pain management, stress
relief, digestive issues, weight loss, insomnia, and more.
The COMO Shambala Retreat in COMO Cocoa Island is currently hosting a treatment programme specially designed for guests who spend prolonged time in the water, with a designated segment for men. The property is also home to one of the few hydrotherapy pools in the Maldives. Six Senses Laamu utilises smart tech in a curated programme that tracks sleep patterns and establishes a healthy sleep routine by providing restorative experiences that include wellness screening, sleep amenities, ayurvedic treatments, nutritional guidance and more.
With the scope for wellness tourism on the rise, the training of local professionals is a necessary element that needs more attention and investment. At present, the ELE|NA Wellness Academy provides courses that are internationally accredited by CIBTAC and ensure that graduates receive the gold standard in training and certification. The academy operates year-round, offers hands-on training, provides access to the latest wellness research, and employs the best practices.
The global wellness tourism industry continues to grow at a rapid pace and is predicted to be worth around $1.35 trillion by 2028, according to Statista. This bodes well for wellness tourism in the Maldives as the concept of wellness is directly proportional to harmony with the natural world. Maldivian resorts, with their abundance of pristine natural spaces and potential for biophilic living and designs, are ripe with promise for many more curated wellness experiences.

We spoke with Sindy Lagare, Director of Spa & Wellness at LUX* South Ari Atoll, whose personal wellness journey deeply influences the transformative experiences she creates.
Embracing ancient Ayurvedic wisdom and the healing power of nature, Sindy believes wellness is more than just treatments; it’s a daily practice that nurtures harmony between body, mind, and soul.
Her approach invites guests to slow down, reconnect, and cultivate mindfulness in every moment. Through thoughtful rituals and personalised care, Sindy inspires guests to feel valued and empowered to live with greater intention long after they leave the spa.
Hotel Insider: How has your own personal journey with wellness influenced the way you lead and curate transformative spa experiences for others?
Sindy: My personal journey has taught me that wellness is exactly that; a journey. It’s also a daily practice rooted in intention, and I believe in creating spaces where guests can genuinely feel that intention. It’s important to make people feel valued. This experience has allowed me to lead with empathy.
In today’s ever-evolving world, it’s essential to cultivate an optimistic curiosity both in ourselves and in our guests. A spa journey is more than just the treatments; it’s a meaningful opportunity to reconnect with ourselves. True wellness is something we practise every day.
Hotel Insider: LUX* ME invites guests on a journey to a healthier, happier self. In your words, what does true wellness feel like when it’s lived, not just experienced?
Sindy: Wellness is about finding harmony within the body, mind, and soul; not simply the absence of stress, but truly feeling present. Each day, as we walk and take in the beautiful views around us, we’re offered a chance to pause, to reflect, and to be fully in the moment. We encourage our guests to reconnect with themselves, to slow down in a world that often pushes us to rush. The spa provides not only treatments but also thoughtfully designed spaces and facilities that support this process. Wellness here unfolds naturally. It’s a gentle, flowing experience—one that helps guests embrace stillness, presence, and inner balance.
Hotel Insider: Your philosophy is rooted in the five great elements; earth, water, fire, air, and space. How do these ancient forces guide the way you design and deliver healing?
Sindy: It is an ancient Ayurvedic wisdom to create wellness immersions that align with

the natural elements. We are part of nature, and these elements are also present within our bodies.
Earth offers grounding and stability. Water represents flow and emotional release. Fire brings vitality and transformation. Air is linked to breath and movement. Space invites silence and reflection.
Each of these elements inspires different treatments and rituals within our spa. We begin with an assessment, where guests complete a questionnaire that helps us understand how they’re feeling—physically, emotionally, and energetically. This allows us to personalise their wellness journey with greater intention and care.
Hotel Insider: At LUX* ME, every treatment is personalised. How do you intuitively understand what a guest’s mind, body, and spirit are calling for the moment they step into your care?
Sindy: Of course, it begins with asking openended questions and truly listening not just to what is said, but also to what is felt. This allows us to understand the guest’s needs on a deeper level. From there, we can gently offer guidance, whether that’s recommending yoga for grounding and balance, or suggesting rituals that support emotional relief and release. It’s about responding with genuine care and presence, creating a space where guests feel seen, heard, and supported. Every recommendation is made with sensitivity, so their wellness journey feels personal, meaningful, and nurturing.
Hotel Insider: There’s something magical about how nature flows into every touchpoint; from barefoot walks to nighttime stillness. How does the natural world amplify healing at the spa?
Sindy: Nature is the original healer. That’s why we encourage reconnecting with the elements, feeling the sand beneath bare feet, breathing in the ocean breeze. These simple, sensory experiences help us to recalibrate, to slow down, and to gently soothe the nervous system.
Whether someone is feeling anxious or simply overwhelmed, nature offers a powerful

form of relief. It helps the body to relax, the mind to soften, and the spirit to settle. We embed this connection into every layer of the guest journey, from rituals to surroundings.
I truly believe that reconnecting with nature is essential for our overall wellbeing; it reminds us of our natural rhythm and restores a sense of balance.
Hotel Insider: Gut health, emotional balance, and conscious nourishment are deeply linked. How do you see the spa’s plant-based offerings like Keen on Green playing a role in holistic well-being?
Sindy: What we eat shapes how we feel physically and emotionally. Nourishment goes beyond taste; it plays a vital role in our energy levels, mood, and overall wellbeing. That’s why we advocate for green eating, with a strong emphasis on incorporating plant-based options into our meals.
A diet rich in fresh, natural ingredients supports vitality at the cellular level, helping the body to function at its best. This approach works hand in hand with mindful movement such as yoga and fitness practices to create a holistic sense of balance and wellness.
We also take pride in using homegrown
varieties wherever possible, including basil, kobe leaves, mint, and fresh lettuce. These ingredients not only add flavour but also strengthen our connection to the land and the importance of eating in tune with nature.
Hotel Insider: When a guest leaves LUX* ME, what do you hope lingers—in their body, in their breath, in their way of being? What’s next for the spa?
Sindy: It’s an experience we carefully create for our guests. Not just a moment of relaxation, but a space where they can feel truly renewed and, most importantly, reconnected with themselves. Our goal is to leave them inspired to lead their lives with greater intention, supported by self-care practices they can carry forward.
We’ve been developing a range of new offerings to enrich this journey. Over the next two years, we expect to introduce exciting additions, including organic hair treatments and natural nail care products. We have recently incorporated the renowned Bastien Gonzalez line. This evolution is unfolding naturally, and we are committed to bringing thoughtful, innovative experiences to our guests. So stay tuned, as there is more to come.
Wellness today goes far beyond traditional spa treatments. It is a holistic concept that encircles multiple dimensions: physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and environmental. Whether someone engages in yoga, takes a quiet walk, or simply sits by the beach, these small acts already contribute to a healthier lifestyle.
We also consider how broader factors, such as climate change and the state of our ecosystems, affect our wellbeing. Wellness, in essence, is the practice. Well-being is the result. Through every element of the guest journey, we aim to support both.
Hotel Insider: Thank you Sindy, for your inspiring wellness perspective.
