Conversation

Armando Kraenzlin

With 25 years of experience across some of the world’s most stunning destinations, Armando Kraenzlin has remained true to one guiding principle: that true luxury should uplift both people and the planet. As a long-serving leader at Four Seasons, he’s championed sustainability, community engagement, and authentic guest experiences, proving that hospitality can be both world-class and deeply responsible.

Hotel Insider: With 25 years of leadership at Four Seasons across multiple geographies, what core values or leadership principles have consistently guided your approach?

Armando: My approach has always been to give equal consideration to guests, staff, the local community, and the natural environment. Luxury hospitality has a much greater role to play than simply providing exceptional experiences for guests. My principles are rooted, quite simply, in doing the right things for the right reasons: engaging with our neighbours, ensuring our team is happy and motivated, and acting in ways that protect and enhance the beauty around us; not for PR purposes, but to genuinely make a positive impact on and within any given location.

Hotel Insider: Among your many sustainability initiatives, which do you consider the most impactful, and how do you plan to scale or evolve these efforts in the coming years?

Armando: There’s no doubt about the impact, on both human and non-human lives, of initiatives such as our Hospitality Apprenticeship Programme, Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, and coral reefscaping project. While these efforts continue to scale and evolve each year, they’ve also had a broader effect by inspiring more positive initiatives across our resort. We began our EarthCheck accreditation a few years ago, and now we assess every aspect of every department to ensure we are consistently doing more good than harm, all day, every day, across the entire island. There’s no limit to how far this can evolve in the years to come.

Hotel Insider: Establishing the Hospitality Apprenticeship Program has empowered hundreds of young Maldivians. How has this initiative influenced your own leadership journey and long-term vision?

Armando: I grew up in Switzerland where apprenticeships are commonplace

for developing technical proficiency. Four Seasons prioritises employing local talent but given our remote location, we had to be innovative. We've come a long way since the early days of paddling between islands to find young talent and we are proud to have played a part in making the local community more enthusiastic about working in the hotel industry. Personally, I've gained a lot over the years from the program too; watching these youngsters grow as individuals as well as hoteliers; constantly being reminded that we are all only ever on a learning path, and the importance of adapting to changing times and evolving mindsets. Our latest approach for the program is implementing more digital content and greater collaborative and experiential learning for the apprentices, including the introduction of such topics as emotional intelligence and life values among others.

Hotel Insider: Your longstanding presence in Southeast Asia suggests a deep professional and personal connection. What initially attracted you to the region, and how has it formed your leadership approach?

Armando: During my time at hotel college, the world’s best hotels were all located in Asia; Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bali. It was clear to me that I wanted to gain experience there. I initially planned to stay for three years, but this new world opened up to me, and with it, new horizons. I began to connect deeply with life in Asia: the people, the food, the arts, and the travel; it’s been special to me ever since. The love affair truly began in 1994, when I took on my first general manager position at a luxury resort in Thailand. We were sandwiched between two traditional fishing villages, so engaging with our neighbours wasn’t just a choice – it was essential. We introduced a variety of initiatives that saw them contributing culturally and benefiting financially, while enabling us to offer authentic and meaningful experiences to guests. The positioning of that resort shaped my approach for the rest of my career. As a hotelier, ensuring that our natural surroundings and local communities benefit as much from our presence as we do from theirs can only ever be a win–win.

Hotel Insider: In what ways can luxury hospitality serve as a catalyst for meaningful environmental change,

and how do you ensure ecological responsibility enhances rather than compromises the guest experience?

Armando: Luxury isn't just about quality; it's about authenticity and emotional connection; it's elusive and unique to each individual but above all, it's rooted in how something makes us feel. When meaningful environmental initiatives are placed at the heart of guest-focused activities, they elicit an emotional response that transforms people’s sense of connection in the same way a

"Luxury hospitality has a much greater role to play than simply providing exceptional experiences for guests. Our principles are rooted in doing the right things for the right reasons:

engaging communities, protecting nature, and inspiring genuine positive impact."

beautiful meal or incredible exhibition would. And when people connect more deeply to the natural world, they have a greater desire to protect it. Luxury hospitality is considered as aspirational; adopting ecologically responsible practices shouldn't be viewed as a compromise to that. Operating in the luxury space and attracting guests from all over the world, we have this incredible opportunity to influence an audience of people who shape the world.

Hotel Insider: How did you navigate the integration of authentic Ayurvedic practices within a luxury hospitality context, and what emerging trends do you foresee in the wellness space?

Armando: We are very fortunate at AyurMa to have a highly trained and well-respected team of ayurvedic physicians, naturopaths, yoga therapists and physiotherapists that integrate ancient wisdom and teachings in line with articulate interpretations of modern wellness diagnostics. They also grow more than 75 species of Ayurvedic herbs onsite to use in our treatments.

We value competence, knowledge and experience over fads and trends. Concepts like holistic health, longevity and so on have been at the root of Ayurveda for thousands of years, as guidelines to living life in ways that promote wellbeing, as well as physical and mental health.

It’s interesting that many of our guests and employees, as well as myself, first consult with one of our AyurMa physicians, when faced with health issues. There’s this deep trust amongst our islanders that the holistic approach is preferable to combatting symptoms through chemicals and pills.

The wellness space is increasingly evolving to incorporate more technologically advanced tools and diagnostics; AyurMa has its finger on the pulse of these developments too with its evidence-based wellness screening system, PraMā: a five-step process that draws from in depth biomarker diagnostics, pulse readings, postural and metabolic evaluations, muscle status, iris diagnosis and more to craft personalised blueprints for optimal health.

Hotel Insider: As digital transformation accelerates across the hospitality sector, how are you equipping your teams and apprentices to embrace innovation while maintaining the high-touch service synonymous with Four Seasons?

Armando: Like everything in life, it's all about balance; digital transformation can be a great tool when used to enhance guest engagement. FS Chat is a good example; it largely replaces phone-or email-based services so hasn't affected the high-touch aspect but makes for speedier, more seamless interactions. We have recognised that our apprentices appreciate on-screen content too, so we're working with digital platforms like the Kahn Academy to digitalise more onsite learning. Our in-house techies have also put their skills to use to engage with younger guests via a Manta Ray VR app; many are fearful of the water so it's a good first step to enhanced interaction alongside an “underwater” manta experience in our Hologram Room. All of this is only meaningful, however, if it supports and improves the creation of human connection in our daily interactions with guests and each other.

Hotel Insider: Thank you Armando, for the impactful conversation.

Safer Healthcare Through Smarter Waste Solutions

Beyond the glassy lagoons and the polished smiles of island hospitality, a toxic truth festers in the tropical heat of the Maldives. On an island that looks like a postcard dream, behind a modest health outpost, a rusting barrel smoulders under the sun—its contents a dangerous mix of used syringes, blood-stained gauze and shattered vials. The sea breeze, fragrant with salt and frangipani, does little to mask the acrid, metallic tang rising from the flames.

This is how infectious healthcare waste—one of the most hazardous byproducts of medical care—is still managed on many of these remote islands.

Until recently, many health centres across the Maldives lacked the necessary facilities to safely manage infectious waste. The Maldives, celebrated for its natural beauty and environmental sensitivity, is quietly battling a public health risk that threatens both its people and its pristine ecosystems. But change is in the air.

With generous support from the People of Japan, and under the ‘Project for the Improvement of Infectious Waste Management in Southwest Asia,’ the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives has taken significant strides to change the narrative. Eighteen locations across the country now house newly constructed facilities dedicated to managing healthcare waste safely and effectively—each one a silent but powerful step towards a healthier Maldives.

The impact is already being felt on the ground. At health centres in the northern islands of Thuraakunu and Thakandhoo, two newly procured autoclaves—machines that use high-pressure steam to sterilize medical waste—are ready for installation. More than just machines, they represent a turning point in how health workers handle infectious waste. Training sessions for staff are set to roll out in the coming months, ensuring that the

equipment is used safely and effectively.

This momentum has been further amplified through a meaningful partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), and funding from the Government of Canada, supporting the construction of seven additional waste management facilities.

Beyond bricks and machinery, the project has invested in the people who stand at the frontline of the country’s healthcare system. In a nationwide capacity-building effort led by UNDP and WHO, more than 600 healthcare workers—90% of them women—have received training on how to safely manage infectious waste. The curriculum covers everything from safe waste segregation and transport to occupational safety and waste minimization strategies. It is a programme that builds knowledge, confidence and resilience.

In the spirit of sustainability, 65 electric tricycles have been distributed across the islands to transport treated waste to disposal sites. These eco-friendly vehicles will produce no carbon emissions while making it easier for remote facilities to manage waste disposal.

The digital backbone of the health sector is also receiving a much-needed upgrade. UNDP has supported the provision of IT and networking equipment to health facilities and the Ministry of Health, strengthening the sector’s digital capabilities—such as enabling digitized dental X-rays. Additional support through the project will include the provision of ECG machines, autoclaves, and water filtration systems, which will enhance health services on target islands. These upgrades will also help improve the performance and extend the longevity of essential medical equipment.

The Maldives is no stranger to environmental vulnerability. But through this project, the country is proving that even small island states can lead by example in tackling healthcare waste management—safeguarding not just lives, but the ecosystems they depend on.

In the Boardroom

Mohamed Munthasir (Munco)

From makeshift stages and learning from three ‘containers’ to some of the Maldives’ most daring cinematic ventures, Mohamed Munthasir, better known as Munco, has carved his path with grit, grace, and boundless imagination.

An actor, writer, director, and choreographer, Munco’s work pulses with the rhythms of real life, capturing both the quiet beauty and chaotic heart of the human experience. In this deeply personal exchange, he reflects on art as survival, storytelling as transformation, and the ever-shifting stage of Maldivian creativity.

Hotel Insider: You’ve been in the Maldivian creative scene for decades. What drove your interest in performing arts, and how has that evolved?

Munco: From an early age, I knew I didn’t want a traditional desk job. My passion for the arts began during my school days at Majeediyya, eventually leading me to pursue acting at the first drama school in Singapore. Starting out in just three converted containers; a classroom, a studio, and an office, I was part of the school's first cohort. Theatre was completely new to me, and I struggled in the beginning, having never even read Shakespeare or written critically about my own ideas. Despite the challenges, I was drawn to the physical and intellectual energy of the field, knowing I wanted a career that kept me moving and constantly learning.

In the early days, theatre wasn’t seen as a viable career, either financially or culturally. Art was often undervalued, and earning a living through it felt nearly impossible. Still, I was committed. I helped build that first theatre space, hanging curtains and lights with two others, and we eventually staged our first show. Theatre not only transformed my career but redefined who I am. Since

then, LaSalle has grown significantly, but those early days in the containers remain foundational to my journey.

Hotel Insider: How has your experience in theatre influenced your approach to directing and storytelling in screen productions like Karu Hakuru and Ill Noise?

Munco: I see theatre as the foundation of all performing arts; a continuous, processdriven form of storytelling. Working on the sitcom Karu Hakuru felt like theatre adapted for television, with scripted scenes, set designs, and multi-angle camera setups capturing the action in one flowing sequence. Compared to film, where every detail is carefully framed and precise, the sitcom format felt more natural and less demanding. In contrast, Ill Noise, a film where I played the lead, required intense focus on nuance and detail.

Ill Noise became a deeply personal project for me. My brother Mufassir created an intricate 3D storyboard, Andhu rewrote the script brilliantly, and Nihi brought the direction to life. It was one of the most complex sets in Maldivian cinema, made possible by a passionate team led by Saji and unconditional support from my family. At the time, I was struggling with depression and used this role of playing a mentally ill character as a form of therapeutic expression. The demanding routine and transformation helped me rebuild confidence and reconnect with myself.

Hotel Insider: What inspired you to create complex character dynamics, and how do you approach writing for different

Photo: Ahmed Shahneez

mediums?

Munco: Switching between stories can be tough, especially with so many constantly swirling in my head. I immerse myself in observing people. Their speech, movements, and subtle behaviours, which helps me get into my characters' minds. I can watch people for hours and even mimic their walks. Writing for me is a way of channelling all those observations into something meaningful.

Interestingly, my best writing happens in unusual places, especially on the toilet seat, which has become my private creative sanctuary. While I prefer solitude, I also find bursts of inspiration in chaotic or noisy settings, like writing on busy streets after school drop-offs. Despite the odd locations, it’s often in these quiet or noisy, in-between moments that the stories truly flow.

Hotel Insider: You've been involved in projects that address social issues. How do you see the role of art and performance in driving social change in the Maldives?

Munco: Theatre and the arts have the power to raise awareness and create empathy in society, yet this value is often overlooked by authorities, who sometimes exploit artists for political gain. Important plays like Nujeheyne (on HIV) and Neygeyne (on unwanted pregnancies) were staged privately for decision-makers but never shown to the public, despite their influence on policy. There is a need for greater recognition of artists and their contributions. Sharing their stories in schools could inspire empathy and understanding in younger generations. Theatre should be part of education, as it helps address social issues by nurturing emotional intelligence and compassion.

Hotel Insider: With Roboman: The Movie, you ventured into creating a family-friendly film that blends entertainment with cultural elements. What challenges and opportunities did you encounter in bringing this story to life?

Munco: This project had been forming for a long time and finally came to life through a collaborative effort with Orkeyz Inc. Though initially just an idea, it became a reality

“The Maldivian tourism industry must embrace our culture, stories, and people. That’s what should be going viral. Authentic, local performances that reflect who we are, not just imported acts or flashy visuals. The industry is shifting, but it needs stronger political will.”

thanks to strong teamwork. Challenges like delayed permissions, tight schedules, and limited locations added complexity and cost, but support from parents and the dedication of the team made it possible.

A standout moment was casting; originally written for boys, the script was revised after impressive auditions from two girls. Teaching and training the young actors was deeply fulfilling, despite the logistical hurdles of working with children. With a dedicated support team and committed talent, the project became one of Orkeyz Inc’s proudest accomplishments.

Hotel Insider: How is the resort industry embracing the entertainment industry and artistes?

Munco: The Maldivian tourism industry is just beginning to open up to forms of entertainment beyond the traditional live bands that have long been the norm. Resorts still tend to fly in fire artists, hula dancers, and acrobats from abroad, and most Maldivians don’t yet see entertainment as a viable career path. I never even realised there was such an entertainment scene in resorts until I started working with Siyam World, where I’ve been the Art and Entertainment Consultant since 2022. I’ve worked on countless productions, like Maldivian Night, and I’m very hands-on. We involve in-house staff, people from various departments, who get paid extra to perform. It creates a more personal connection with guests and shows

how much local talent we already have. I’m currently working on a Maldivian Night at Canareef, but unfortunately, none of the dancers are local, which says a lot about where we are right now. That said, things are starting to shift. For the first time, a full-scale Maldivian folklore performance became the main act at Patina’s New Year celebration. It was entirely local and felt fresh; something different from the usual juggling or trapeze shows. I believe the true content behind Maldivian tourism should be our culture, stories, and people. That’s what should be going viral on social media, not just flashy visuals, but meaningful, authentic performances. The industry is changing, but we still need the political will to fully embrace entertainment as a real, respected career path.

Hotel Insider: Orkeyz Inc has produced celebrated works in Maldivian cinema. Can you share your vision for the future of Maldivian film and how you see your role in shaping its direction?

Munco: As I grow older, I feel a stronger urge to give back to the community, especially through teaching and training in the arts. Though much of my early work was done for free out of passion, I now recognise the importance of building a more sustainable foundation for future artistes. I’ve been involved in Theatre Mirage for years, and since 2017, I’ve focused on film through Orkeyz Inc. I believe our work has helped move the Maldivian film industry forward, beyond traditional formats, embracing new technologies, platforms, and audiences, including the potential of short films and regional dialects.

Now, I’m trying to balance my consultancy role in the tourism sector with my work as a local storyteller. Theatre remains, to me, a mirror of society and a crucial medium for dialogue. I’ve faced many challenges, and though it often feels like a one-person mission, this has always been my path. I’ve never done anything else, and despite the guilt of not giving enough back yet, I remain committed to supporting the growth of the arts in the Maldives.

Hotel Insider: Appreciate the thoughtful perspectives, Munco.

Word from the top Vijay Kumar

Vijay, who has led his career path with consistent learning coupled with curiosity, transitioned swiftly from crunching numbers to his current role as the general manager at The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort. Hotel Insider chats with Vijay on his colourful career journey. His story is one of adaptability, innovation and leading around a shared vision.

Hotel Insider: You’ve made a rare and successful transition from crunching numbers to operations. What skills from your finance background have proven most valuable in your role as general manager of The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort?

Vijay: Coming from a finance background has helped me more than I expected. Numbers help me see the bigger picture, whether it's managing costs, forecasting, or identifying ways to work more efficiently without compromising on guest experience. As a general manager, every decision creates a ripple effect, and having that financial mindset allows me to weigh those impacts more strategically. It has also taught me to remain calm under pressure and focus on the details that matter in daily operations. These skills shape the way I lead the team, navigate a dynamic environment, and deliver meaningful experiences that consistently exceed guests' expectations.

Hotel Insider: Having led multiple hotel openings and worked across several countries, how do you approach aligning multicultural teams toward shared goals, especially in high-pressure environments?

Vijay: Although the world is multicultural, I believe that we humans at our core are more or less similar. Having worked across

several countries, I’ve seen how diversity manifests primarily in perspectives, work styles, and communication approaches. While cultures differ in how people communicate or approach work, I believe that at our core, we all want the same things to grow, be valued, and succeed.

I've learned that aligning multicultural teams begins with respect. I take the time to understand what motivates each individual, how they respond to feedback, and what leadership means in their cultural context. My approach always begins with establishing clarity through a shared vision that resonates within the team and inspires everyone to achieve the goals, regardless of their background.

In high-pressure environments, transparency and empathy become even more critical. People deliver their best work when they feel seen, heard, and part of something meaningful. I focus on building trust, fostering open dialogue, and celebrating incremental successes. When team members feel connected to both the purpose and one another, they naturally move forward together.

Hotel Insider: You describe yourself as a hands-on and strategic leader; can you share a specific example of how this approach influenced a successful guest experience or internal initiative?

Vijay: My leadership style is rooted in participative leadership. I truly believe the best ideas come from the floor, not the boardroom. This keeps me close to the team and guests every day. I'm deeply guest-focused and passionate about creating moments that linger long after check-out. To me, true luxury is about genuine connection and thoughtful surprises.

Recently, two young guests caught our attention. Their eyes lit up every time they saw our team in action. Inspired by their enthusiasm, we surprised them with miniature versions of our associate uniforms. I had the honor of pinning on their name badges and officially welcoming them to our Westin family. The joy on their faces was unforgettable. That's what personalised service means to us: anticipating unspoken wishes and turning them into lasting memories.

Hotel Insider: Westin brand is known for its focus on wellness. How do you plan to integrate your personal advocacy for a balanced lifestyle into the guest and associate experience at the resort?

Vijay: Wellness isn't just a brand pillar at Westin, it's a personal commitment I truly believe in. For me, a balanced lifestyle means being present, mindful, and creating space to recharge, principles I actively model for both our guests and team. At The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort, we're fortunate to be surrounded by natural beauty that invites relaxation and renewal. We integrate wellness through meaningful moments throughout the day, whether it’s encouraging associates to hold meetings by the arrival jetty to offering guests unique experiences like sunrise yoga on our yoga pavilion and nourishing choices from our Eat Well menu. When our team feels balanced and cared for, that energy naturally flows into the guest experience. My goal is to make wellness effortless, something you feel in every interaction, whether you're at the spa, the gym, or anywhere across the resort.

Hotel Insider: In pursuing your sustainability goals, how do you ensure that local communities benefit from and actively participate in your initiatives?

Vijay: Sustainability isn't just about protecting the environment; it's about

"Looking back at my now 19-year journey across finance and operations, the most defining leadership lesson has been the power of adaptability. True leadership is about embracing change, thriving in uncertainty, and making flexible, informed decisions with the well-being of the team in mind."

uplifting the people who call this place home. At The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort, we actively involve local communities in our sustainability journey, ensuring they're not just beneficiaries but true partners. From sourcing produce and seafood from nearby islands to offering training and employment opportunities, we aim to create a positive economic ripple effect.

Through Marriott's Serve360 program, we contribute to improving the quality of life on our neighboring residential islands, focusing on education, infrastructure, and community well-being. Within the resort, we run regular awareness programs that inspire both our associates and guests to take collective responsibility for the environment. True sustainability is only possible when it's inclusive, when communities feel empowered, engaged, and proud to be part of the impact.

Hotel Insider: Creating lasting guest connections and empowering associates to deliver bespoke experiences are central themes in your leadership approach. What systems or daily practices help sustain this culture across the resort?

Vijay: Creating genuine guest connections and empowering associates to craft personalised experiences is at the heart of what we do at The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort. To sustain this culture, we focus on a combination of systems and daily practices that keep everyone aligned,

engaged, and motivated.

First, we emphasise regular touchpoints from daily team huddles where we share guest feedback, to one-on-one conversations with associates to understand their needs and aspirations. I believe empowerment is key. When associates feel seen and supported, they’re inspired to give their best. We also utilise a guest profile system that captures preferences, special requests, and past interactions, allowing us to anticipate needs and deliver truly bespoke experiences.

Recognition is another cornerstone of our culture. We celebrate small wins and personal milestones, reinforcing our shared commitment to service excellence. Finally, I encourage every associate to think beyond their job description. Whether it’s sharing a personal recommendation or going the extra mile for a guest, these small, meaningful gestures build lasting connections. These daily practices create a consistent, empowering environment where both our associates and guests feel genuinely cared for.

Hotel Insider: Reflecting back at your 19-year journey across finance and operations, what has been the most defining leadership lesson, and how does it influence your decisions today?

Vijay: Looking back at my now 19-year journey across finance and operations, the most defining leadership lesson has been the power of adaptability. In finance, structure and predictability guided most decisions. But as I transitioned into operations, I realised that true leadership is about embracing change and thriving in uncertainty.

Whether it's navigating market shifts, leading a diverse team, or responding to the unexpected, adaptability allows me to make decisions with a clear, calm mind and a focus on long-term goals. Today, I use that lesson to empower my team to think creatively, to adapt to the dynamic hospitality landscape, and to approach every situation with a solution-oriented mindset. Ultimately, leadership is about making decisions that are both informed and flexible, always with the well-being of the team and the guest experience in mind.

Hotel Insider: Thank you Vijay, for sharing your inspiring career journey with us.

Working Women

Hawwa Hana

In this inspiring conversation, we chat with Hawwa Hana, Assistant Human Resource Manager at Sun Siyam Olhuveli, who has carved a successful path in the hospitality industry.

A people-oriented individual with a focus on gender equality, it’s only fitting that Hana chose Human Resources to drive her career forward. From a young F&B attendant to a prominent leader in the field, she provides valuable insights into the unique challenges and opportunities faced by women in the Maldivian hospitality industry and offers advice on achieving a balance between career and personal life.

Hotel Insider: Can you tell us a little about your background and how you started your career in hospitality?

Hana: I grew up in a household surrounded by divers and had limited interactions with tourists, but I always had a strong desire to help people. Watching the hospitality industry bring together people from all over the world sparked my interest, and I knew I wanted to be part of that vibrant, dynamic environment. At the age of 16, I took my first step into the industry as an F&B attendant with Air Taxi. It was there that I discovered the joy of customer interactions, feeling truly euphoric whenever a guest or colleague praised the service I provided. Some customers even waited specifically for my service, which motivated me to seek greater opportunities. This drive led me to an internship with Four Seasons Resort Maldives, which opened new doors for my career.

Hotel Insider: What drew you to pursue a career in human resources, and what do you find most rewarding about working in this department?

Hana: My initial interest in human resources stemmed from my desire to make a tangible impact on people's lives. In hospitality, everything revolves around people, whether it’s the guests or the team members who make the experience exceptional. HR is at the heart of this, creating an environment where employees can thrive and feel valued. I find it incredibly rewarding to help people realise their potential, whether by providing training and development opportunities or by resolving conflicts and improving workplace culture. At

Sun Siyam Olhuveli, I take pride in being part of a team that promotes positive employee experiences while driving performance.

Hotel Insider: As an Assistant Human Resource Manager, what role do you play in supporting and developing the careers of other women within the resort?

Hana: As an Assistant HR Manager, I am deeply involved in mentoring and supporting the women in our organisation. A key part of my role is ensuring equal opportunities for growth and advancement for all employees, regardless of gender. For women, I focus on creating clear pathways that help them step into leadership roles. I am often approached by leaders seeking support in coaching their female team members, and I seize these moments to reflect on my own experiences and share insights that can help them navigate their own career journeys. I encourage many of my female colleagues to take on new projects that challenge and expand their skill sets. Empowering women in the workplace not only helps them grow professionally, but also drives a more diverse, innovative, and highperforming team.

Hotel Insider: What are some of the unique challenges and opportunities that Maldivian women face in the hospitality industry, and how do you think we can overcome these?

Hana: Maldivian women in hospitality show resilience and ambition, overcoming societal expectations and job demands to redefine norms. Many break barriers, proving that dedication conquers challenges. While some pause careers for family, others push forward, challenging outdated beliefs. Advancing into management has reinforced my belief that ambition, opportunity, and support create success.

Organisations like Sun Siyam Resorts drive change by promoting gender equality and leadership opportunities. By fostering an inclusive culture and advocating education and skill-building, we empower women to thrive and inspire future generations.

Hotel Insider: How do you manage the

work-life balance, and what advice would you give to other women who are striving to balance their careers in hospitality with family and personal life?

Hana: Hospitality is a major industry, but resorts aren’t the only career path. Society should encourage individuals to build stable careers before settling down. Work-life balance is possible by setting boundaries, prioritising tasks, and making time for self-care and family. In hospitality, balance isn’t about equal time but finding harmony. Open communication and time management help create a fulfilling career and personal life.

Early career stages offer freedom to explore roles in resorts, corporate settings, or even abroad. Seizing opportunities while young is key. Planning career pauses and the legacy you want to leave ensures long-term success, even allowing for mentorship after retirement.

Hotel Insider: What is your vision for the future of women in leadership roles within hospitality, especially in the Maldives, and how do you see your role evolving in the years to come?

Hana: My vision for women in leadership roles within the hospitality industry is one of sustained growth and greater representation. I hope that, in the future, the gender gap between men and women in leadership positions will close, and we’ll see more women not just in middle management, but in senior and executive roles as well. Over time, I envision hospitality to be a more inclusive industry where women are not only present but are also instrumental in shaping the direction of organisations. Personally, I see my role evolving as I continue to gain experience. I aim to inspire future generations of Maldivian women to aim high and pursue leadership positions in hospitality. By supporting and empowering women both within our resort and across the industry, I hope to play my part in making this vision a reality.

Hotel Insider: Thank you Hana, our readers will be inspired.

Liverpool FC branding integration amplified destination awareness through the sports partnership.

Cultural authenticity defined the presentation through daily traditional performances, live Maldivian music, and culinary demonstrations featuring signature dishes like "roshi and mashuni." The gastronomy corner provided twicedaily cooking demonstrations, while live art installations by an acclaimed local artist bridged traditional and contemporary creativity.

Strategic visibility campaigns included prominent outdoor advertising at the Convention Gate entrance and comprehensive Dubai taxi branding throughout April and May, transforming city vehicles into mobile destination billboards.

Yes, Chef

Maksat Zhulovchinov

Chef Maksat Zhulovchinov’s return to Sheraton Maldives marks an exciting new chapter in his already impressive culinary career. Having previously served as Executive Sous Chef, Maksat brings a wealth of international experience and a deep passion for both innovation and authenticity.

With over 17 years in the industry, his goal is to enhance the island’s dining scene by fusing local Maldivian flavours with global techniques, curating exceptional experiences that leave a lasting impression on every guest.

Hotel Insider: Welcome back, Chef Maksat! After your earlier tenure as Executive Sous Chef at Sheraton Maldives, what drew you back and what are your plans as the Executive Chef?

Maksat: The Maldives holds a special place in my heart, both as a culinary destination and a place for personal growth. Returning to Sheraton Maldives feels like a natural step forward. It’s a great opportunity to elevate the dining experience even further, bring new flavors to the table, and craft memorable moments for our guests through exceptional cuisine. Working with the passionate team at Sheraton Maldives, I look forward to curating menus that reflect both innovation and authenticity, creating not just meals, but impressions that last.

Hotel Insider: You've built a global career with culinary stops in Almaty, Riyadh, Doha, and now the Maldives. How have these diverse cultural experiences influenced your culinary style and the way you lead in the kitchen?

Maksat: Working across different countries has truly shaped me into a more versatile chef. Each culture has its own unique relationship with food and being immersed in such diverse culinary traditions, often within the same kitchen, broadens your perspective immensely. You begin to cook not just with technique but with a deeper sensitivity to flavour, history and the emotional connection people have with what they eat. It transforms the way you approach ingredients, menus and the overall dining experience.

This global exposure has also influenced how I lead and mentor my team.

Understanding different working styles and cultural values has helped me become a more empathetic and effective leader. It is about creating a collaborative environment

"Leadership

in the kitchen is not about giving orders from a distance, it’s about being present, leading by example, and building trust. When your team sees your commitment during high-pressure moments, it inspires them."

where everyone feels valued and inspired to contribute their own ideas. At the heart of it, food is a universal language and working internationally has allowed me to speak it with greater fluency, creativity and purpose.

Hotel Insider: From pre-opening task force projects to managing high-volume kitchens in full operation, you've seen both sides of the culinary world. What have these experiences taught you about adaptability, innovation, and execution?

Maksat: These experiences have taught me the importance of staying agile, embracing challenges and keeping an open mind. In the hospitality and culinary world, no two days are ever the same. You are constantly adapting, whether it is to changing guest expectations, new kitchen dynamics or unforeseen obstacles. Being able to communicate clearly, remain calm under pressure and adjust your course when needed is not just a skill, it is a necessity.

I have found that a positive attitude and a willingness to learn go a long way in this fast-paced industry. My personal motto has always been, “Never try, never know.” It is a simple phrase, but it carries real meaning. It encourages me to take initiative, explore new techniques, and step outside my comfort zone. That mindset not only fuels creativity but also opens up opportunities for continuous growth, both professionally and personally. It is this approach that opens the door to constant growth and innovation.

Hotel Insider: The kitchen environment is fast-paced and high-pressure, especially in high-profile culinary destinations across the region. What’s your approach to building a strong, motivated crew that

consistently delivers excellence under pressure?

Maksat: Leadership in the kitchen is not about giving orders from a distance; it is about being truly present. Your team needs to feel your support not just in words, but in actions. They need to know that you are there to guide them, to lift them when the pressure is on, and to celebrate their efforts when they succeed. I believe that strong leadership comes from setting the tone through example. When your team sees that you are willing to put in the same effort, stay calm during difficult moments, and remain focused on the bigger picture, it inspires them to do the same.

I place great importance on creating a culture of respect and collaboration in the kitchen. Every voice matters, and I make a point of listening to my team, learning from their insights, and encouraging their growth. Sharing knowledge generously is at the heart of my approach. Whether training a junior chef or brainstorming with a sous chef, I believe in open dialogue and mutual support. During the busiest services, I stand shoulder to shoulder with my team, not only to help keep things running smoothly but to show that we are all in it together. That is how we build trust. And in that trust, we find the strength to deliver the level of excellence our guests deserve.

Hotel Insider: When you're not in the kitchen, what are your personal passions and how do these translate into the creativity and energy you bring to your culinary artistry?

Maksat: A chef can only create true masterpieces if they genuinely love what they do. Cooking is not simply a profession; it is an expression of love, creativity and commitment. Without that deep connection to the work, it becomes difficult to produce dishes that truly echo with others. Passion is what drives a chef to explore new flavours, refine techniques and consistently pursue excellence.

Away from the kitchen, maintaining balance is essential. I find that spending quality time with friends, enjoying meaningful conversations and watching a good film allows me to unwind. These moments are more than just leisure; they help restore my energy and offer fresh perspectives. They remind me that inspiration can be found in the quiet simplicity

of everyday life, and it is these moments that often fuel creativity when I return to the kitchen.

Hotel Insider: How do you plan to celebrate Maldivian flavors while also pushing the boundaries with global techniques and modern presentations?

Maksat: I believe Maldivian cuisine holds immense potential that is yet to be fully explored. It is a rich and diverse culinary tradition with bold flavours, unique ingredients and deep cultural roots. My aspiration is to honour its authenticity while introducing a contemporary perspective that heightens the dining experience without compromising its essence. This is not about changing the soul of Maldivian food, but rather reimagining how it is presented and enjoyed. By incorporating global techniques and applying a more refined approach to plating and flavour balance, we can create dishes that feel both familiar and exciting. It allows us to highlight the natural beauty and versatility of local ingredients while offering something unexpected to our guests. The aim is to spark curiosity, evoke emotion and create memorable moments, where each bite tells a story of tradition, innovation and pride in Maldivian heritage.

Hotel Insider: With over 17 years of culinary experience behind you, what guidance would you offer to aspiring chefs looking to one day lead the kitchen of a world-class resort?

Maksat: Stay curious at all times. It is important to continually build on your foundation of knowledge while never losing the desire to explore new ideas and approaches. Do not be afraid to challenge what is ordinary or expected. Even the most traditional dishes can be reinvented in fresh and exciting ways that surprise and delight diners. Above all, take the time to listen carefully to your executive chef, as they have already walked the path you are just beginning. True growth comes from a commitment to learning, experimenting and evolving every single day, embracing both successes and setbacks as valuable lessons along the way.

Hotel Insider: Thank you Chef Maksat for sharing your culinary journey with us.

Main Story

Rhythms and spectacles of the resort culture

In the dreamlike canvas of the Maldives, where palm-fringed beaches and shimmering lagoons are admired globally, entertainment plays a quiet but essential role in curating unforgettable resort experiences. As tourism continues to flourish, resorts across the archipelago have increasingly invested in entertainment as a value-added offering. Yet, beneath the glitz of fire dancers and live bands lies a deeper narrative about the evolution of entertainment in the Maldives and the often-subtle challenges faced by local artists striving to make their mark.

Today’s Maldivian resorts present a rich variety of entertainment options to their international and local guests. Live music remains the essential element, with threepiece and five-piece bands being the most common fixtures in evening programmes. DJs frequently provide a modern twist to poolside parties and beach events, and themed nights feature performances from circus-style acts and musicians playing exotic instruments.

Most of these spectacles are performed by international talent. From European fire dancers to Southeast Asian acrobats, foreign entertainers dominate the celebration vistas. Events during peak seasons, such as Christmas and New Year, often include large-scale shows with choreographed dance performances, magicians, and musical acts. Russian Orthodox Christmas, celebrated by a significant portion of the Maldives’ tourist demographic, brings its own flavour of elaborate pageantry.

Evolving opportunities for local artists

Over the past decade, access to performance opportunities in resorts has become more

democratic. Gone are the days when knowing someone within the industry was a prerequisite to getting noticed. Today, local musicians and performers can send digital media kits, connect directly via social media, and gain visibility through platforms like YouTube or Instagram. These tools allow artists to present themselves professionally and accessibility to resort gigs has become easier.

Collaborations with foreign acts have ushered in valuable learning opportunities for local entertainers, allowing them to share stages with international performers and engage in meaningful cultural exchange. These interactions not only elevate artistic standards but also nurture a deeper appreciation for diverse performance styles. At the same time, there is a growing spotlight on rare and distinctive forms of local entertainment. Artists who play instruments like the harp, hang drum, flute, or violin offer performances that are both culturally rich and emotionally resonant. Their uniqueness sets them apart in a market often dominated by mainstream acts, and their popularity especially at luxury events and weddings

reflects an increasing demand for bespoke, refined experiences that celebrate Maldivian talent in fresh and memorable ways. However, while access has improved, certain systemic issues remain unchanged. Rights for artists, particularly in the context of original music and intellectual property, are poorly defined. Many local performers still rely heavily on cover songs, and while original work exists, the platform to showcase and monetise it is limited. Although the landscape hasn't changed drastically in terms of protecting artists' rights, there is a growing appreciation for better production quality. Sound systems, lighting rigs, and staging setups have all reached world-class standards. With continued investment in foundational support, the local industry has the potential to reach even greater heights.

Making a career in entertainment

Despite these challenges, resort entertainment offers one of the most viable creative career paths in the country. The Maldives is known for offering some of the highest-paying music gigs in the region,

particularly for live bands. Local artists have successfully carved out sustainable careers performing at resorts, with some securing long-term contracts that offer both financial security and artistic satisfaction.

Franchise hotels often offer better pay compared to local operators, although the level of support and flexibility may vary. For example, while international chains may pay well, they may also treat entertainment as a transactional service rather than a creative partnership. Local companies, on the other hand, may offer more personalised engagement and long-term relationships, albeit at slightly lower pay scales.

Historically, resort entertainers played a significant role in driving guest satisfaction and, in turn, boosting property revenues. During the 1990s and early 2000s, their presence was seen as essential to enhancing the overall guest experience. In recent years, however, the growing popularity of allinclusive packages has shifted this perception. Entertainment is now often regarded as an ambient background rather than a central feature, particularly outside the festive season, when resorts typically scale back on elaborate programming.

"In the early days of tourism in the Maldives, we performed as a full band, often spending up to three hours just getting to the resort with all our instruments in tow. Guests would time their dinners to catch our sets, it felt like something special. We weren’t just entertainers; we were storytellers, cultural ambassadors, part of the soul of the place. The resorts today are world-class, no doubt, but sometimes I feel that sense of connection has faded. Entertainment has become more of a backdrop now, rather than a shared moment between us and the guests,” reflected Ahmed ‘X-Ray’ Athif, a celebrated figure in the Maldivian music scene.

Navigating subtle challenges

Local artists in the Maldives are navigating an evolving resort entertainment industry that, while challenging, is also filled with opportunities for growth and innovation.

One of the key hurdles remains the cost and accessibility of musical instruments, as most equipment is imported and subject to high mark-ups. However, this has inspired a growing interest in community sharing, secondhand markets, and even small-scale local craftsmanship to support aspiring musicians.

Government grants and loan schemes, while still evolving, reflect an encouraging commitment to supporting the arts. With greater awareness and refinement, these programmes have the potential to bridge more of the financial gap faced by creatives. The competitive presence of foreign acts highlights the need to further uplift and invest in homegrown talent. Rather than seeing this as a setback, it’s an opportunity to spotlight the unique sound, stories, and spirit that local artists bring to the stage.

While infrastructure for live shows is still developing, there is growing interest from private partners and communities in creating alternative venues and platforms for original content. Pop-up performances, digital concerts, and collaborative festivals are emerging as new ways to engage audiences and showcase creativity.

A renewed focus on discipline and artistic integrity is laying the groundwork for deeper trust between performers and hospitality providers. With a collective push toward professionalism, the future looks increasingly promising for long-term contracts, artistic freedom, and cultural partnerships that celebrate and sustain local talent.

Inclusive future

Of the over 200 resorts currently operating in the Maldives, a significant majority rely on foreign entertainers. It’s not uncommon for a performer working across three different resorts to find that two of them feature international in-house bands. While foreign talent brings its own flair and professionalism, this trend often overshadows the untapped potential of the local entertainment scene.

Local bands and solo performers have already established fair and competitive

pricing models, making them a viable choice for resorts. However, the continued preference for international acts isn’t solely an issue of availability, it’s largely one of perception. Shifting this mindset requires both increased awareness and a commitment to nurturing homegrown talent.

“The path forward lies in inclusivity and innovation. Resorts can play a transformative role by investing in structured mentorship programmes, collaborative showcases, and in-house residencies. Creating talent incubators or development centres focused on unique entertainment forms such as fire dancing, juggling, or theatrical storytelling could diversify the entertainment ecosystem and unlock new career paths for aspiring local performers,” said Ahmed Dhanish (Dhaai) drummer at Fasylive and director at Kaban Events a rising event production company. Munco, the Art and Entertainment consultant at Siyam World reflected, “The landscape is slowly changing, but we need political will to really move things forward. I believe the true content behind Maldivian tourism, the rich stories, culture, and talent should be what creates a buzz on social media. Not just flashy posts, but meaningful content that reflects who we are. There are hopeful signs: for the first time, a local folklore performance was the main act at Patina’s New Year celebration. It was entirely Maldivian and done on a grand scale. It felt fresh, something different from the usual juggling or trapeze acts you’d typically see.”

At the same time, Maldivian artists can actively position themselves through digital platforms. A polished media kit, original content on YouTube, or partnerships with local production houses can significantly enhance visibility and attract opportunities that were once out of reach.

With the ongoing evolution of the resort industry, entertainment should follow suit. By nurturing local talent and investing in creative spaces, the Maldives can curate resort entertainment that not only captivate visitors but also connect them meaningfully to the islands’ culture.

Azim Musthag

Azim or Zim as known in the dive community is a marine scientist and former dive instructor with over 7 years of experience in ocean conservation, reef monitoring, and environmental consultancy in the Maldives. Combining scientific expertise with a passion for underwater storytelling, he works to promote sustainable marine tourism and deepen public awareness of the ocean’s changing ecosystems.

Hotel Insider: You've worked in marine ecology and conservation for over a decade; what sparked your initial interest in the ocean and its ecosystems?

Zim: Before moving into marine ecology and ocean science, I spent around 10 years working as a dive instructor. It was during that time, being immersed in the ocean every day, that my passion for the marine environment really took root. The more time I spent underwater, the more I began to notice both the beauty and the changes taking place, some of which were quite concerning. That constant exposure sparked a deeper curiosity in me. I wanted to understand what was happening beneath the surface, not just observe it. So, I decided to pivot my career and pursue formal studies in marine ecology. For the past seven years, I’ve been working in this field, driven by the desire to not only learn more about our oceans but also to share that knowledge and inspire others to care about marine conservation.

Hotel Insider: What does a typical day in your fieldwork look like as a marine scientist?

Zim: A typical day as a marine scientist is actually more office-based than many people

expect. While fieldwork is a vital part of what we do, it makes up only a small portion of our time. When we’re in the field, we focus on collecting data whether it’s through dives, surveys, or sample collection, and we do have long hours in the field. But the bulk of our time is spent back in the office analysing that data, interpreting the findings, and compiling reports.

My day-to-day work often involves conducting Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), particularly on the marine side, and monitoring various marine ecosystems. A significant part of the job includes reviewing and preparing environmental reports, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting decision-making through scientific input. Research (outside the work of working in an environmental consultancy), is ongoing throughout the year, and I also take part in training sessions, capacity-building workshops and conferences as often as I can. So while the ocean might be our focus, much of the work that protects it happens behind a desk.

Hotel Insider: With your background in underwater photography, how do you use visual storytelling to support marine

conservation efforts?

Zim: Visual storytelling plays a powerful role in marine conservation, and I primarily use underwater photography to raise awareness through social media. Over time, I’ve built a small but engaged network of divers, conservationists, and marine biologists who share the same passion for the ocean. Together, we use the tools available to us, especially photography and video to highlight both the beauty and the fragility of marine ecosystems.

While we capture a large number of images during dives, we focus on sharing those that carry the strongest message or tell a compelling story. These visuals help initiate conversations, inform people, and inspire action. The goal is to make the unseen world beneath the surface more relatable to those who may never experience it firsthand. I believe that when people come together and contribute their unique skills towards a shared cause, it truly can make a meaningful difference for ocean conservation.

Hotel Insider: How has your experience as a dive instructor influenced your scientific approach to reef monitoring and marine research?

Zim: My experience as a dive instructor has had a significant influence on my approach to reef monitoring and marine research. Spending extended periods in the water has given me a deeper, more intuitive understanding of ocean conditions, including how weather and currents affect dive safety, visibility, and marine life behaviour. This hands-on familiarity has proven invaluable in research settings, especially when working in areas I know well.

When conducting studies on specific marine species or habitats, being familiar with the dive site makes it easier to identify key features or locate particular organisms. The dive community itself is a powerful resource. Experienced divers often keep detailed logbooks and have strong observational memory, making them excellent sources of informal data. They can often detect subtle changes in the reef, such as shifts in coral cover, fish populations, or unusual sightings, long before they’re formally documented.

Marine biologists tend to focus on specific niches depending on their research scope, but as a dive instructor, I’ve developed a broader observational lens. This helps me bridge the gap between structured scientific research and real-time, on-the-ground insights from the diving community.

Hotel Insider: You’ve worked with

both research institutions and private environmental consultancies; how do these different settings influence the way conservation is approached?

Zim: Working in both research institutions and private environmental consultancies has given me a well-rounded perspective on how conservation is approached in different contexts. In research institutions, the focus is primarily on advancing scientific knowledge and understanding ecosystems in depth. These organisations are often conservationdriven and tend to operate on grant funding or support from non-profit sources. As a result, their projects are usually long-term, data-focused, and aimed at informing broader conservation goals and policy recommendations.

On the other hand, environmental consultancies operate within a more

"Recovery still occurs, though often in a changed form due to climate impacts. Even if we don’t return to previous levels of health, understanding how reefs recover and whether the same ecosystem functions return is critical for planning meaningful and realistic conservation strategies."

commercial framework. These are typically for-profit entities that provide services, such as Environmental Impact Assessments or monitoring reports, based on the regulators requirements. While the work can still be grounded in conservation principles, the objectives are shaped more by regulatory requirements or business goals than by pure ecological inquiry.

In the context of doing environmental consultancy related services, we provide scientific input and assessments as one part of a much larger decision-making process, which includes developers and government authorities. Our role is to ensure that the environmental component is properly considered and that recommendations are based on sound science, even if the final outcome is out of our hands.

Hotel Insider: As a director of Maldivers, what are the biggest challenges you've

faced in promoting sustainable diving and marine tourism?

Zim: Maldivers is a diving centre that was established in the early 2000s, so we've been actively involved in the diving and marine tourism space for quite some time. One of the biggest ongoing challenges has been promoting sustainable practices among both divers and operators, especially in a tourismdriven country like the Maldives. Over the years, we’ve dedicated hundreds of hours to reef clean-up events and daily environmental awareness initiatives. Education has always been a core part of our mission, helping divers understand the impact they have and encouraging more responsible behaviour underwater.

Now that we’re operating in Dhiffushi, we’ve brought with us the lessons learned from our earlier work in the capital. We continue to make guest education a priority, integrating conservation messaging into every experience we offer. Another challenge we face is the environmental footprint that diving can have, particularly when it comes to mass tourism. To help minimise this, we deliberately focus on small group diving. This allows us to provide a more personalised experience while also reducing potential stress on the reef ecosystem.

Hotel Insider: What trends or changes have you observed in the Maldives' coral reef health over your years of diving and research, and what gives you hope for their future?

Zim: Reefs are constantly changing, they might be at their healthiest one year, with high coral cover, and then drop to near zero due to an unforeseen El Niño event or another disturbance. Recovery is possible, but we need to understand how reefs recover, whether the same species return, and whether the new coral cover supports the same ecosystem functions. Even if we don’t return to previous levels of health, recovery still occurs, though in a changed form due to climate impacts. In particular, the central atolls have been heavily affected by reclamation.

While climate change is beyond our control, the damage we cause directly is not. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of people in the field, we still have only a handful of experts. The Maldives has great potential in marine research, but we need to create more opportunities to encourage and support future scientists.

Hotel Insider: Thank you Zim, it’s been a pleasure.

Khun Rungnapa Spotlight

Khun Rungnapa has dedicated 30 years of her career to Dusit, one of Thailand's leading hotel and property development companies. With a heartfelt belief in and commitment to introducing Thai-inspired gracious hospitality to the world, Dusit Hotels and Resorts offers guests a uniquely special stay in stylish surroundings, with a personalised approach to service.

This philosophy is reflected in Khun Rungnapa’s management style at Benjarong, a sophisticated Thai restaurant that serves authentic Thai cuisine sure to leave you wanting more.

Hotel Insider: You’ve had an impressive 30-year career with Dusit, and now you’re working as the Restaurant Manager of Benjarong at the Dusit property in the Maldives. What has been the most rewarding aspect of your journey in the hospitality industry, and what inspired you to take on this chapter in the Maldives?

Khun Rungnapa: The most rewarding aspect of my journey has been the opportunity to create meaningful, memorable experiences for our guests, all while working with diverse and talented teams from around the world. Every day is a new learning experience, and it’s incredibly fulfilling to know that I am contributing to shaping the hospitality experiences that guests cherish. When the opportunity arose to move to the Maldives, I was excited by the challenge of working in such a unique, beautiful environment. It felt like a perfect opportunity to bring my expertise in hospitality and management to one of the world’s most breathtaking destinations.

Blending Dusit’s gracious hospitality with the natural beauty and serenity of the Maldives has been a truly inspiring experience, and every day presents a new adventure in creating extraordinary experiences.

Hotel Insider: The Benjarong experience offers a vicarious escape to Thailand, where guests can sample authentic Thai cuisine in a luxurious setting. How do you maintain this level of cultural authenticity while managing a restaurant in the Maldives, a destination with such diverse influences?

Khun Rungnapa: Maintaining cultural authenticity is a priority for us, and it starts with sourcing the finest, traditional Thai ingredients, ensuring the flavours stay true to what Thai cuisine represents. We are also fortunate to have experienced Thai chefs who have deep knowledge of their culinary heritage and bring a lot of passion to the dishes. While the Maldives is known for its unique blend of cultures, we strive to maintain the integrity of Thai cuisine by paying attention to every detail, from preparation to presentation. At the same time, we ensure that the dining experience harmonises with the Maldivian atmosphere, using local materials and styles in the design of the restaurant and infusing elements of the serene, island lifestyle into the service. This

"Maintaining cultural authenticity starts

with passion and precision, from sourcing traditional Thai ingredients to infusing islandinspired hospitality. We aim to deliver a dining experience that celebrates Thailand’s rich heritage while harmonising with the

serene spirit of the Maldives."

balance allows us to offer a truly special dining experience that celebrates both Thailand and the Maldives.

Hotel Insider: As a seasoned restaurant manager, what do you think are the most important leadership qualities that help you guide your team to success?

Khun Rungnapa: The most important leadership qualities, in my experience, are empathy, adaptability, and the ability to inspire. A great leader must always be able to listen and understand their team’s strengths and areas for growth, which helps in providing guidance and creating a sense of value within the team. It’s also crucial to remain adaptable because the hospitality industry is dynamic, and responding effectively to changes or challenges is key. Finally, a leader should always strive to inspire their team by creating a shared vision and motivating them to achieve both individual and collective success. Collaboration, clear communication, and nurturing a positive work environment are fundamental in making sure the team feels both supported and motivated to succeed.

Hotel Insider: Over your 30 years in hospitality, how have you seen the role of women evolve, particularly in leadership positions?

Khun Rungnapa: The hospitality industry has made remarkable progress in recognising and empowering women in leadership roles. When I first started, there were fewer women in senior positions, but over the years, I have seen a positive shift. Women are now taking on executive positions and leading strategic decision-making processes in a way that brings fresh perspectives. There are now more initiatives dedicated to mentoring female talent and creating pathways for career growth, and many organisations are focused on promoting inclusivity. It’s inspiring to see women in leadership positions not just for the sake of equality but because they bring unique insights that help shape the direction of the industry. I believe we will continue to see more women excel and contribute in diverse and meaningful ways.

Hotel Insider: The Maldives attracts guests from all over the world. How do you blend local Maldivian culture with international influences in your restaurant’s menu and overall experience to create something unique for guests?

Khun Rungnapa: In the Maldives, we have the privilege of working in a destination that is globally recognised for its natural beauty, and we want to reflect that in our culinary

offerings. We begin by incorporating locallysourced Maldivian ingredients, which infuse the menu with authentic, regional flavours. At the same time, we ensure that the dishes maintain their Thai authenticity, which offers guests a truly unique fusion experience. Our menu highlights this blend, creating dishes that celebrate both Thai cuisine and the local Maldivian culinary traditions. The overall ambiance of the restaurant is designed to reflect the tranquil, island lifestyle of the Maldives while showcasing the artistry of Thai culture, offering a space that feels both serene and deeply connected to its roots.

Hotel Insider: With your vast experience, how do you mentor and develop your team to ensure they continue to grow professionally? How do you cultivate an environment that encourages learning and teamwork?

Khun Rungnapa: I firmly believe in leading by example and creating an environment where growth is nurtured at every level. To mentor and develop my team, I provide regular opportunities for training, skill-building workshops, and constructive feedback. It’s important to offer clear pathways for career progression and to encourage team members to take ownership of their development. By focusing on open communication and recognition, I aim to create a positive work culture where everyone feels appreciated and motivated. Encouraging teamwork is also vital, so we ensure that the team collaborates closely, sharing knowledge and supporting one another in achieving both personal and team goals. My goal is to foster an environment where learning is continuous, and everyone feels empowered to contribute to our collective success.

Hotel Insider: Looking ahead, what are your personal and professional goals for the next stage of your career?

Khun Rungnapa: Personally, I am committed to continuing my journey of growth as a leader. There’s always more to learn, and I aim to stay adaptable. Professionally, my ambition is to take Dusit’s hospitality to new heights by further enhancing the guest experience and elevating our service standards. I also want to devote more time to mentoring and supporting the next generation of hospitality professionals. By sharing my knowledge, experiences, and passion for the industry, I hope to help others grow and succeed, just as I have had the privilege of doing throughout my career.

Hotel Insider: Thank you for sharing your insights, Khun Rungnapa.
