Why gearing towards sustainability is essential for future resilience

The Maldives transitioned from a Least Developed Country (LDC) to MiddleIncome status in 2011 and soon after, to Upper-Middle-Income Country status. This achievement was driven by an impressive growth rate of 9.87% per annum¹ between 1980 and 2000, following the maturation of its tourism industry, which had begun a decade earlier. Over the next decade, the Maldives climbed in the Human Development rankings, reaching the high human development category and reducing its poverty levels to below 1% by 2019²

Like many Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the Maldives has faced challenges

in sustaining its hard-earned development gains. Climate change, natural disasters, and external shocks to its narrowly diversified, tourism-reliant economic base are constant threats. Between 1990 and 2024, the Maldives experienced four such external shocks, each causing an average GDP contraction of 14.06%, resulting in significant livelihood losses. The UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Progress Report 2024³ indicates that SIDS have made only 5.9% progress towards the SDGs, lagging behind Landlocked Developing Countries (13.2%) and Least Developed Countries (11.5%), highlighting the unique challenges SIDS face compared to other

groups.

Despite these constraints, the Maldives, along with other SIDS, has shown tremendous efforts to protect its economy from shocks through policy actions aimed at orienting its policy frameworks, domestic markets, and business environment towards sustainable practices as a strategy for building resilience from within. The Maldives has set an ambitious target of meeting 33%⁴ of its national energy needs from renewable sources, with a pledge to reach net-zero emissions by 2030, provided it receives the necessary financing support. The country also has designated 79 Marine Protected

Areas (MPA), which form large swathes of natural ecosystems that provides economic opportunities as well as environmental resiliency. These efforts have been accompanied by calls for international donors to recognize the significant financing challenges faced by SIDS, particularly concerning the worsening debt situation, with 22 United Nations member SIDS, including the Maldives, expected to have a Debt-to-GDP ratio above 70% until 2025⁵

The UNDP has played a central role in supporting Government of Maldives agencies in creating a sustainable financing ecosystem through a series of strategic interventions. In 2020, UNDP partnered with the Ministry of Finance to develop a strategic framework identifying a set of “big bet” reforms for unlocking financing from domestic markets for climate finance and improving the alignment of international finance modalities with sustainability practices. This initiative led to the launch of the Maldives GenderResponsive Climate Financing Strategy⁶ in 2023 by the Minister of Finance, which identified 16 action areas under three strategic pillars. The Financing Strategy is expected to enhance the overall resilience of financial markets and create the enabling conditions for unlocking domestic finance for more broadbased adaptation and mitigation measures in the country.

The Financing Strategy provided a broader framework for reforms in the Maldives, and UNDP has expanded its support under three key areas outlined in the strategy: aligning public and private financing for SDGs, mainstreaming insurance as a tool for disaster risk financing, and supporting the development of a sustainable entrepreneurship ecosystem.

First, in aligning public financing systems towards sustainability, UNDP has supported the Ministry of Finance in classifying the national budget against the SDGs and is assisting in developing a country-specific typology to classify expenditure related to climate change and disaster risk reduction. These tools will help the Government monitor its expenditure against key SDG targets,

identify underfunded SDGs, and link resultsbased budgeting approaches to deliver its budget. Additionally, UNDP is supporting the Ministry in designing a Sustainable Finance Hub to champion financing strategy reforms and climate finance initiatives across the government.

On the private financing side, UNDP has partnered with the Capital Market Development Authority (CMDA) to develop the Maldives’ first Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards for its corporate sector. This framework will enable the private sector to report on key ESG metrics relevant to the Maldives and use the sustainability data for risk control and monitoring purposes. The framework is also expected to prepare domestic firms to access foreign sustainabilitylinked financing in the long run by aligning their business models with internationally accepted sustainability-linked standards.

Moreover, UNDP is supporting the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the Central Bank, in developing the country’s insurance markets to enhance the ability of firms and individuals to tackle unexpected risks. This partnership includes strengthening the insurance regulatory environment by developing insurance regulations that bolster the current solvency and licensing regimes. It also involves conducting nature-based studies and hazard profiling exercises to explore how new insurance products can help preserve the natural ecosystem, such as coral reefs. These initiatives are expected to increase insurance penetration and position the domestic insurance market as a strong risk-financing alternative, reducing reliance on public finance mechanisms.

UNDP is also supporting the Government in fostering an innovative ecosystem for the MSME sector, given the critical role it can play in driving future growth in the Maldives. It is estimated that nearly 68% of formal employment in the Maldives⁷ comes from public or publicly-owned enterprises, highlighting the potential for private sector development. As part of this effort, UNDP is assisting the Ministry of Economic Development in conducting an entrepreneurial

ecosystem study to address factors inhibiting Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in the country. Blue Economy is the overarching theme for MSME development in the Maldives, given the significant linkages between ocean and blue nature capital in the tourism, fisheries, and agricultural sectors. In May 2024, UNDP hosted its regional Blue Economy Forum in Male, bringing together over 130 blue economy experts, government officials, and civil society actors to discuss how growth aspirations can be balanced with sustainable management of natural resources in the region.

As the Maldives continues to navigate the complex challenges of sustaining its development gains amidst external shocks and climate vulnerabilities, the shift towards a more sustainable market and business environment is not just a strategic choice—it is an essential pathway to resilience. By embedding sustainability into its financial systems, fostering innovation in the private sector, and prioritizing the protection of its unique natural resources, the Maldives is laying the groundwork for a future that balances economic growth with environmental stewardship. These initiatives, supported by UNDP and other international partners, are vital steps towards ensuring that the Maldives can thrive in a rapidly changing world, securing the well-being of its people and preserving its natural heritage for generations to come. The journey ahead may be demanding, but with a strong commitment to sustainability, the Maldives is well-positioned to build a more resilient and prosperous future.

Mohamed Shareef

Hotel Insider chats with Mohamed Shareef, the newly appointed CEO and Managing Director of the Bank of Maldives (BML), a position he assumed after an impressive 25-year career within the institution.

Starting in 1995 as the first manager of BML's Fuvahmulah Branch, Shareef's career has been marked by leadership in key operational roles, including operations director and deputy CEO, before stepping into his current role. Shareef has played a transformative role in driving BML's digital transformation, modernising banking services, and introducing innovative solutions to upscale the customer experience.

Hotel Insider: Congratulations on your new position as CEO and MD of the Bank of Maldives. When did you start your banking career, and what was your first position?

Shareef: I started my banking career in 1995 at Bank of Maldives as the first manager of Fuvahmulah Branch when it opened. Throughout my 25-year journey at BML, I have held various leadership positions, including operations director and deputy chief executive officer before being appointed as CEO last year.

During my tenure, particularly in executive and board-level roles, I have been deeply involved in modernising the bank's operations. This includes leading crucial technological transformations, such as implementing our core banking systems, introducing debit and credit card services to the Maldives, and expanding our digital banking footprint through internet and mobile banking, self-service banking

facilities, and introducing our e-commerce payment gateway solutions.

Hotel Insider: How do you balance the rapid pace of technological innovation with the need to preserve the core values and trust that customers have in traditional banking?

Shareef: We view technology not as a replacement for traditional banking, but as a tool to deliver better banking; and we approach modernisation with a 'customer-first' mindset. This means being customer centric in our innovation, adopting technology that enhances, rather than replaces, the trust-based relationship our customers value in traditional banking. We ensure our digital transformations meet the highest regulatory standards and are based on best practices across the globe. Digital solutions should make banking more accessible and efficient while maintaining the same level of trust and personal attention that customers expect from their bank. This balanced approach has proven successful in improving both our service delivery and financial performance while preserving the fundamental trust our customers place in us.

Hotel Insider: With your extensive experience in both the private sector and leadership roles within banking associations, what do you believe is the biggest challenge facing banks today, and how can BML address it?

Shareef: One of the biggest challenges facing banks today is adapting to rapidly evolving customer expectations while managing emerging risks in an increasingly digital financial landscape.

At the Bank of Maldives, we successfully navigated this challenge by taking a proactive approach to digital transformation while strengthening our risk management framework. Today BML is well-positioned to address this through continued investment in technology infrastructure, enhanced cybersecurity measures, and employee upskilling; all while maintaining our strong focus on customer-centric service delivery.

Hotel Insider: You’ve led BML through significant digital advancements like e-commerce payment gateways and mobile banking. What upcoming technologies or trends do you see having the most impact on banking services in the Maldives?

Shareef: AI-driven personalised banking and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) will be game-changing technologies for our market. Leading banks in Southeast Asia for instance have demonstrated how AI can revolutionise customer service through digital virtual assistants, handling over 80% of customer queries automatically while providing personalised financial insights. Banks have successfully automated account servicing and compliance processes, significantly improving efficiency and reducing errors and reduced loan processing times from days to just hours.

For the Maldives, implementing these technologies would particularly benefit our dispersed island communities, enhancing accessibility while reducing operational costs. However, the key is to implement these innovations thoughtfully, ensuring they complement our existing services and meet our unique market needs.

Hotel Insider: What role do you see sustainability and social responsibility playing in the future of banking, and how does BML plan to integrate these principles into its long-term strategy?

Shareef: Sustainability is a critical pillar for modern banking, particularly for a nation as environmentally vulnerable as the Maldives. Leading global banks are setting compelling examples with concrete dollar value

"Technology works best when it enhances rather than replaces human judgment. The future of banking at BML is about finding the right balance between human and technology, and how they can complement each other."

commitment to sustainable financing or pioneering sustainability-first financing that tie interest rates to borrowers' environmental performance.

We have recently introduced our Green Resort Finance product, which can be used for a variety of sustainability practices that our resorts require to fulfill their own commitments. From coastal protection programmes to reforestation or waste management, we believe that, as part of being a responsible financial institution, we play a significant role in supporting businesses.

The key is to align our commercial objectives with environmental and social responsibility, creating value for our shareholders while contributing to the sustainable development of our nation. This isn't just about risk management – it's about capturing new opportunities in the growing sustainable finance sector while protecting our unique environment for future generations.

Hotel Insider: How has your experience with the Asian Bankers Association influenced your approach to leadership, and how do you apply those lessons to BML’s strategic goals?

Shareef: I had the privilege of holding the vice-chairman position at the Asian Bankers Association in the past for a period of 2 years. It continues to be a great platform for knowledge sharing and advocacy across the region. Over the years, we have witnessed the successful digital transformation journeys of banks in the region, their navigation through regulatory changes and the shaping of the financial industry as a whole.

We also see the power of partnerships and the impact this can have on transforming banking for our customers.

Hotel Insider: In a world where financial technology is advancing so rapidly, how do you see the role of human expertise evolving within BML to ensure that both innovation and customer care are balanced?

Shareef: Human expertise becomes even more crucial as technology advances. At the Bank of Maldives, we have led significant digital transformation initiatives, where we learned that technology works best when it enhances rather than replaces human judgment.

The future of banking at BML is about finding the right balance between human and technology, and how they can complement each other to serve our customers better.

Hotel Insider: What motivates and inspires you to continue pushing boundaries in the banking sector?

Shareef: Banking innovation can transform lives and communities. I've witnessed firsthand how improved financial services can empower individuals and businesses across our islands. When we modernised our digital banking platforms, we weren't just implementing new technology – we were helping small business owners manage their finances; we were enabling individuals to access banking services from remote islands without the need to travel to a nearby island. What continues to inspire me is the potential banking has in changing people’s lives. Having progressed from junior positions in my early days at the bank to eventually serving as CEO, I've developed a deep understanding of our customers' evolving needs. There is always room for improvement, always another boundary to push when serving our community.

Today’s rapid pace of change in banking technology presents endless opportunities to create a positive impact. And with the right people, we really can do anything.

Hotel Insider: Thank you Shareef, it has been a pleasure.

Alain Trefois

Alain’s extensive career in the luxury hospitality industry spans iconic properties across Europe and the Maldives, where he has refined his approach to blending tradition with innovation.

With a deep understanding of both the cultural heritage of each destination and the evolving needs of today’s luxury travellers, Alain has mastered the art of preserving the essence of a place while introducing modern concepts that boost the guest experience. Currently serving as the general manager of Oblu Nature Helengeli by Sentido, Hotel Insider had a chat with Alain to get an insight into his colourful career in hospitality.

Hotel Insider: With 12 years as cluster director of operations and 15 years of experience across three resorts in the Maldives, along with your recent appointment as GM at Oblu Nature Helengeli by Sentido, what strategies have you found most effective in ensuring seamless daily operations across multiple properties?

Alain: Over my 12 years as cluster director of operations managing multiple resorts in the Maldives, I've found that smooth daily operations rely on effective communication, strong team collaboration, and attention to detail. One key strategy is establishing clear communication channels across properties, with regular formal and informal meetings to align priorities and address challenges. Empowering local teams to make decisions based on their knowledge fosters ownership and quick problem-solving. Integrating technology for real-time guest feedback and operational tracking enhances responsiveness. Finally, prioritising staff training ensures a motivated, well-equipped team, which is essential for success.

Hotel Insider: As someone who has focused on team building and leadership, how do you ensure your teams remain motivated and aligned with the resort’s objectives, especially in such a dynamic and service-driven environment?

Alain: Ensuring teams stay motivated and aligned with a resort's goals, especially in the fast-paced luxury environment of

the Maldives, requires strategic leadership, ongoing communication, and a strong focus on employee well-being.

While the cliché "happy staff, happy guests" holds true, it should be ingrained in company culture as a top priority; this is our “Joy of Giving” philosophy.

The first step is creating a shared vision, ensuring all team members understand the resort's goals and how their roles contribute to the guest experience. By knowing what we represent and the services we offer, the team can align their focus and grow towards achieving collective success.

I focus on setting clear, measurable objectives aligned with service excellence, guest satisfaction, sustainability, and efficiency. Regular communication through briefings and team meetings keeps everyone engaged, addresses concerns, and reinforces our shared mission.

An open-door policy ensures feedback flows both ways, building trust and reinforcing commitment to the resort’s goals. We also emphasise professional development through tailored training programs and clear career progression paths, ensuring that staff grow both personally and professionally.

Recognition is key to maintaining morale. Whether through formal programs like “Employee of the Month” or simply acknowledging excellent guest feedback, regular recognition fosters positive behavior and strengthens team spirit.

When teams feel supported and engaged, they naturally align with the resort’s objectives and deliver exceptional service.

Hotel Insider: With your background in Mediterranean cuisine and culinary management, how do you incorporate this specialised knowledge into your operations and enhance the dining experience for guests?

Alain: My background in Mediterranean cuisine and culinary management has given me a strong grasp of both the technical and

cultural aspects of fine dining. Mediterranean cuisine’s focus on fresh, quality ingredients and vibrant flavors aligns perfectly with luxury dining in the Maldives.

To incorporate this knowledge into our operations, I prioritise sourcing the freshest local ingredients to complement Mediterranean flavors. Working closely with local suppliers, we bring in topquality seafood, produce, and herbs while maintaining the authenticity of Mediterranean cuisine. Modern techniques and innovative presentations add a creative touch, balancing tradition with new ideas. Empowering and collaborating with our culinary team is central to my approach. The team at Oblu Nature Helengeli by Sentido is the heart of our operation, and their dedication to excellence is key to delivering memorable dining experiences. I encourage continuous learning, creativity, and experimentation while respecting Mediterranean traditions. Regular tastings, workshops, and training foster pride in their work.

Our chefs incorporate locally sourced ingredients and regional flavors, offering guests a true taste of the Maldives through a Mediterranean lens. Connecting with guests and sharing the stories behind each dish adds a personal touch to the dining experience.

Hotel Insider: Can you share some key tactics you've used to manage the financial performance of your properties, especially when it comes to budgeting and food cost analysis?

Alain: Managing financial performance in a luxury resort like those in the Maldives requires a strategic, data-driven approach. Over the years, our revenue and commercial teams have developed key tactics focused on effective budgeting, forecasting, and cost control to ensure profitability.

Accurate and proactive budgeting is essential. We set flexible budgets that

Word from the Top

account for seasonality, guest trends, and cost fluctuations, working closely with the finance, revenue, and department heads to forecast and track both revenue and expenses. By analysing historical data, we establish realistic targets and maintain room for contingencies.

Food cost management is particularly critical in a resort environment, where highquality dining must align with cost control. Our finance and culinary teams conduct rigorous food cost analysis, breaking down dish ingredient costs to ensure profitability. We also use menu engineering to highlight high-margin dishes while keeping the menu fresh. Strong supplier relationships, optimised inventory management, and waste control are key tactics to minimise costs. By optimising operations, focusing on efficiency, and maintaining a high-quality guest experience, our resorts consistently meet financial targets while delivering exceptional value.

Hotel Insider : You’ve emphasised client focus and customer loyalty in your roles. How do you continuously improve guest experiences to ensure long-term satisfaction and repeat business?

Alain: Client focus and customer loyalty are at the heart of my operations approach. In a luxury destination like the Maldives, we strive not only to meet but to exceed guest expectations, ensuring long-term satisfaction and repeat business through personalised service, consistency, and innovation.

Anticipating guest needs is essential. Our team is trained to recognise returning guests and tailor their experience, from room preferences to special requests. A dedicated Guest Relations team ensures immediate action on feedback, turning it into memorable experiences.

We actively seek guest feedback through management engagement and digital channels, analysing it to understand needs, identify trends, and refine our offerings. This ongoing process helps us stay ahead of preferences and remain responsive. Employee training and empowerment are key to exceptional service. We equip our team with the skills to go above and beyond, creating special moments for guests. Empowering staff to make on-thespot decisions, like offering upgrades or personalised amenities, enhances guest satisfaction.

We also focus on offering authentic local experiences, such as Maldivian cooking classes or spa treatments using indigenous ingredients. These cultural immersions strengthen emotional connections with the

destination, encouraging repeat visits.

For customer loyalty, we’ve developed personalised programs and VIP initiatives, using guest data to send tailored offers and thoughtful gestures like birthday notes or return guest discounts.

By creating personalised experiences, empowering our team, and continuously innovating, we turn one-time visitors into loyal guests eager to return.

Hotel Insider: In the challenging and ever-changing world of hospitality, especially in remote locations like the Maldives, how do you prepare your team and operations for unforeseen crises?

Alain: In remote locations like the Maldives, preparing for unforeseen crises is essential. Given the unpredictability of natural disasters, health emergencies, and other disruptions, it’s crucial for operations and teams to be agile and well-prepared. The foundation of crisis preparedness is a comprehensive emergency management plan, covering scenarios like storms, public health issues, supply chain disruptions, and regulatory changes. These plans are regularly updated and communicated to all team members, ensuring everyone knows their role.

A key part of the plan is forming emergency response teams, with department leaders trained to manage specific crisis aspects, from guest safety to operations continuity. We regularly run crisis simulation exercises to reinforce these skills.

Flexibility in the supply chain is vital. We work with procurement teams to secure alternative suppliers or local sources for critical items, ensuring service continuity during disruptions.

Equally important is supporting the team’s emotional and mental resilience. Open communication channels allow staff to share concerns, ensuring they feel supported and can continue delivering excellent service.

Guest communication is central during crises. We have protocols for regular updates, alternative plans, and reassurance, empowering front-line staff to respond empathetically to guest inquiries.

Technology plays a vital role, from real-time weather tracking to advanced communication systems. These tools ensure we can adapt services even during emergencies.

Finally, after each crisis, we conduct debriefs and evaluations to learn from the experience and continuously improve our readiness.

Hotel Insider: Throughout your career, you've worked across various luxury

destinations. How do you balance innovation and tradition in the hospitality industry, particularly when maintaining the unique identity of each property while introducing new concepts or technology?

Alain: Balancing innovation and tradition in luxury hospitality, especially in culturally rich destinations like the Maldives, is both exciting and challenging. Throughout my career, I've learned that successful hospitality lies in honouring the unique essence of each destination while embracing new ideas, technology, and evolving guest expectations.

In the Maldives, this means integrating local heritage, such as the Maldivian way of life and marine biodiversity, into the guest experience. We aim to create a sense of place, incorporating traditional elements in everything from culinary offerings to design. Innovation should complement tradition, not replace it. For example, while maintaining exceptional service and traditional Mediterranean or local cuisine, we introduce interactive dining experiences, sustainable ingredients, and cutting-edge cooking technology to enhance the guest experience.

Technology also plays a key role in blending tradition with modernity, offering seamless experiences like mobile apps and digital check-ins, while still delivering the warm, personalised service that luxury guests expect.

New concepts, whether wellness programs or eco-luxury villas, must align with the property’s ethos and enrich, rather than disrupt, the guest experience. We blend traditional Maldivian healing practices with modern wellness trends, creating a unique fusion of old and new.

In the culinary space, my background in Mediterranean cuisine allows me to balance tradition with innovation, offering modern dining experiences without losing the essence of Mediterranean cooking. Technology, such as sous-vide techniques and guest-customised dining via mobile apps, elevates the experience while staying true to the roots of the cuisine.

Lastly, guest feedback is crucial. By listening to their preferences, we continuously adapt our offerings, whether it’s more local excursions or modern twists on traditional dishes; always staying grounded in authenticity.

Ultimately, the key is to respect each property’s identity while introducing innovations that elevate the guest experience.

Six Senses Laamu receives double honours for its marine conservation initiatives

Six Senses Laamu has received double recognition for its pioneering marine conservation initiatives. It won the “Best Culture, Travel & Lifestyle Environmental Initiative” at the inaugural Country & Town House Future Icons Awards and was named in the prestigious Condé Nast Traveller’s 2024 “Bright Ideas in Travel” list.

With the Future Icons Awards the UK’s esteemed Country and Town House Magazine honors visionary innovators setting new standards in sustainability and environmental stewardship. Six Senses Laamu’s Sea Hub of Environmental Learning in Laamu (SHELL) was celebrated by the judges as “an incredible conservation project,” recognizing its role in uniting diverse stakeholders to protect marine ecosystems.

Simultaneously, the resort’s selection for Condé Nast Traveller’s Bright Ideas in Travel list acknowledges SHELL and the Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI) as leading innovations addressing travel’s most pressing environmental challenges.

SHELL and its projects

Opened in March 2023, SHELL represents a groundbreaking collaboration between luxury hospitality and marine conservation, housing the MUI team, a partnership between Six Senses Laamu marine biologists and three renowned NGOs: The Manta Trust, Blue Marine Foundation, and the Olive Ridley Project. The 5,952-square-foot facility serves as the base for several pioneering research programs.

The team’s manta ray research has identified 138 individual manta rays in Laamu waters and developed the world’s first underwater contactless ultrasound scanner for studying manta ray reproduction. Their innovative “Eyes on the Reef” project provides 24/7 monitoring of manta ray behavior at cleaning stations.

In sea turtle conservation, the resort has documented 1383 hatchlings on its shores between January to November 2024 alone. The team maintains one of the Maldives’ largest turtle identification databases, with

over 670 individually identified turtles in Laamu atoll. Their advocacy efforts contributed to the designation of Gaadhoo, a crucial turtle nesting beach, as a Marine Protected Area in December 2021.

The resort’s coral reef monitoring program has documented impressive recovery rates, with coral cover increasing up to 55 percent on the house reef. The team has identified 36 different coral genera on the house reef and 47 throughout Laamu, while conducting groundbreaking research on coral spawning patterns.

SHELL’s achievements extend beyond research to include successful conservation initiatives such as the #ProtectMaldivesSeagrass campaign, which has led to the protection of over 910,000m2 of seagrass meadows across 37 resorts. The facility features an immersive gallery with LED display floors, educational viewing booths, and advanced technology for guest education, making marine conservation accessible and engaging for visitors of all ages.

Discretion, not display - the soft power of quiet luxury

"Quiet luxury" has gained traction as a modern buzzword, paralleling concepts like "quiet quitting." But what exactly does it represent? Essentially, it’s the art of indulging in sophisticated, understated experiences. It’s where wealth whispers, and luxury is experienced in subtle forms. Though quiet luxury has been a prominent topic in the fashion world, it has also quietly infiltrated travel and hospitality in recent years The rise of this trend is surprising, especially when compared to the usual extravagance associated with luxury travel. The travel industry is uniquely positioned to embrace this shift, moving away from flashy, unattainable destinations towards more intimate, less commercialised locales, such as glamping in Africa, exploring the timeless charm of Tuscany, or enjoying a secluded getaway at a resort in the Maldives. The current attraction in travel is “anti-tourism,” destinations that remain untouched by the usual tourist traps.

In recent years, a shift in the luxury travel industry has been brewing, one that favors subtlety over spectacle, exclusivity over excess. As the world evolves, quiet luxury has emerged as the new definition of high-end travel, replacing the flashy displays of wealth with refined, understated experiences. Stealth wealth, or the idea of enjoying luxury without drawing attention, is now spilling into the travel sector, particularly among the affluent who are increasingly forgoing glitzy, seeand-be-seen destinations for more discreet, tranquil getaways.

Quiet luxury is a concept rooted in the idea

that true wealth doesn’t need to be flaunted. It’s not about flashing expensive logos or engaging in conspicuous consumption; instead, it’s about using high-quality, often understated products that speak to one’s refined tastes without drawing attention. This shift towards subtlety is reshaping the way people experience luxury, particularly in the context of travel and tourism.

High-profile events are losing some of their allure as well, with many opting for remote locations that offer mental health benefits, family connection, and peace of mind. Destinations that prioritise serenity over glory are becoming more desirable, places where silence is golden and where luxury is defined by exclusivity rather than extravagance. The Maldives, for example, with its tropical balmy breezes, over-water bungalows and emerald lagoons, offers a symphony of sophistication for those who value quiet luxury tucked away from the bustling everyday life. Resorts like Kudadoo, Cheval Blanc Randheli, and Anantara Kihavah, among others, offer a sense of holistic well-being that is neither loud nor flashy, but subtle and deeply enriching. Here, serenity is served on a silver platter, with no request too grand and no detail too minute to

escape attention.

Understated elegance over flashy indulgence

Quiet luxury isn’t about showing off; it’s about creating experiences steeped in privacy, refinement, and comfort. It’s a stark contrast to the well-trodden tourist traps, where clanging noise, crowds, and camera flashes often disrupt the experience. Instead, quiet luxury focuses on the “white noise” of environments where service whispers and experiences speak louder than any branded display.

This shift aligns with a growing preference for destinations that prioritise peace, seclusion, and bespoke services. For example, in the Maldives, guests arrive by seaplane to resorts in far atolls, slipping into their private slice of paradise almost unnoticed by the outside world. The Maldives isn't just about unwinding; it’s about immersing oneself in an environment where time seems to stand still, and every whim is catered to with discreet precision. The Maldives’ focus on tranquility and exclusivity appeals to those who value luxury that isn’t seen but felt, a deeper, more intimate experience.

A significant shift in the global luxury travel market is the growing preference among affluent travellers for discretion over overt displays of luxury. This trend is fueled by an increasing awareness of how excessive displays of wealth can attract unwanted attention, particularly in a world where public scrutiny of conspicuous consumption is on the rise. As a result, many high-networth individuals are increasingly mindful of how their luxury experiences are perceived, favouring understated elegance over overt indulgence, particularly in emerging, highprofile destinations like China, where the top 1% values privacy alongside luxury. Destinations that offer tranquility, privacy, and exclusivity like the Maldives are perfectly

positioned to cater to this demand for quiet luxury. Rather than opting for traditional, extravagant resorts, travellers are now seeking experiences that prioritise serenity and subtlety with their privacy uncompromised. These travellers are drawn to destinations that offer secluded villas, private accommodations, and a personalised, low-profile experience. The focus shifts from showcasing wealth to enjoying it in peace, where luxury is felt but not flaunted. In this new ideal, opulence becomes a deeply personal experience, one of quiet refinement rather than social display.

The next frontier

The global travel industry is witnessing a paradigm shift where high-net-worth individuals are increasingly seeking understated, mindful, and personalised experiences. Quiet luxury is no longer just a trend; it’s curating the future of luxury travel. This evolving preference is driven by a desire for authentic, culturally rich experiences, as well as a preference for destinations that are not shaped by the gimmicks of traditional, loud tourism.

For brands in the travel industry, embracing this shift is crucial. Destinations can stand out by offering curated experiences that appeal to intellectual and cultural luxury, rather than over-the-top, commodified luxe. The key is to offer experiences that feel deeply personal, authentic, and local, something that is particularly important as high-net-worth travellers increasingly seek destinations that provide a genuine sense of place and belonging. A place where they can experience less limelight and more connection.

Technology also plays an important role in enhancing quiet luxury, but it must be integrated thoughtfully. The goal is to enhance the overall experience without detracting from the subtlety of the experience. From private yacht charters to personalised wellness experiences, technology should serve the

guest’s need for tranquility and ease, not disrupt it.

Local partnerships are another key strategy for brands to become an integral part of the destinations they serve. By working closely with local artisans, cultural institutions, and eco-friendly initiatives, brands can create a more authentic narrative and offer their guests experiences that go beyond typical luxury.

Quiet Luxury as the new standard

In an industry dominated by excessive displays of wealth, quiet luxury is proving that true luxury doesn’t need to be shouted from the rooftops. Whether it’s a secluded resort in the Maldives or a private villa in an off-thebeaten-path destination, the growing demand for quiet luxury is setting the tone for the way that travellers experience high-end hospitality. For destinations like the Maldives, catering to the growing demand for discreet opulence offers a unique competitive advantage both geographically and as a well-heeled global brand. By focusing on privacy, exclusivity, and personalised service, these destinations can tap into a new segment of affluent travellers who value peace, relaxation, and the ability to indulge without attracting attention or exhibition. In this new era of luxury travel, experiences are valued over material displays, and quiet luxury is setting the standard for what it means to travel in stealth wealth.

The quiet luxury travel trend is having its moment with elite jet-setters trading flashy parties and popular cities for novel experiences and off beat destinations. As the tourism industry evolves, embracing quiet luxury is not just an opportunity; it’s a necessity. For those seeking tranquility, serenity, and refined experiences, quiet luxury travel is the future, and destinations that recognise this will undoubtedly thrive.

Aminath Shaly Working Women

In conversation with Aminath Shaly, an inspiring HR leader who has climbed the ranks from the humble beginnings of a telephone operator to Human Resources Director at the contemporary Oagaa Art Resort. Shaly shares her journey of resilience, her continuous work towards personal growth, her passion for developing local talent, and her vision for a more inclusive and dynamic workplace.

Hotel Insider: Your journey from a telephone operator to a human resources director at the contemporary Oagaa Art Resort is incredibly inspiring. What personal values or habits have been the foundation of your success?

Shaly: When I chose to work in the resort industry, I wanted to build a career in an area that people weren’t familiar with. I didn’t know what to expect when I first started working in a resort; it was a new environment, and at the time, it wasn’t very popular. By “popular,” I mean that people weren’t aware of the various roles available in resorts. When I got the opportunity, I decided to explore it. Once I was there, I saw tremendous potential; something I could grow into.

To reach where I am today, I had to make many sacrifices. I left home, friends, family, and everything I was familiar with to move to an unfamiliar place where I had to rely entirely on myself for growth. Back then, we didn’t have as many opportunities as we do today. Especially as a local woman, it wasn’t easy to thrive in a male-dominated environment.

One of the personal values that has contributed to my success is my commitment to continuous learning. When I started working in the resort industry, I didn’t have a strong educational background. I was just a telephone operator, fresh out of school. I believed that to grow, I needed to acquire skills, knowledge, and experience.

I strongly believe in maintaining a strong work ethic. Being in HR is different from other fields because you have to lead by example. You’re the one providing guidance, supporting the team, and advising when necessary. To excel in HR, you must be disciplined, hands-on, and a role model, often wearing multiple hats to meet the diverse demands of the role.

Another value I uphold is the ability to adapt to different cultures and environments. Every workplace is unique, and understanding these differences is something I prioritise before

taking on a new role. I carefully evaluate whether the opportunity aligns with my career goals and personal beliefs, ensuring that it’s a place where I can contribute meaningfully. I also value building relationships and networking. In HR, relationships are crucial because it’s a people-centric role. You must establish connections and maintain professional relationships, even in challenging situations. Relationships don’t end when someone leaves the resort. The Maldives' tourism industry is relatively small, so you often cross paths with the same people in different settings. Maintaining those connections is important for long-term success. Finally, I believe in dreaming big. From an early stage, I aspired to be at the top of my field and knew I wanted to become an HR director one day. To achieve this, I pursued my studies while working, earning certifications, a diploma, and a master’s degree in HR. I’ve always focused on balancing handson experience with theoretical knowledge. Applying what I learned in real-time, I gained both practical skills and insights, which have guided me throughout my journey.

Hotel Insider: Balancing a hands-on career with ongoing education, like your current psychology degree, is no small feat. How do you stay motivated and manage your personal growth alongside professional commitments?

Shaly: I study because staying future-ready is a trend I follow. I don’t wait around. I read extensively and stay updated on current trends. HR has been evolving significantly, so pursuing a psychology degree alongside my master’s is important for my growth. For me, it’s not about stopping; I see the HR role shifting in the next 5-10 years to focus more on the psychological aspect, especially when dealing with the new generation.

Hotel Insider: You have an impressive track record in HR with various recognitions. How do you continually

challenge yourself to grow as a leader in a field as dynamic as HR?

Shaly: When I started in HR, the field was very different from what it is now, and it continues to evolve. It’s a dynamic role that doesn’t require doing the same thing repeatedly because it constantly adapts to new aspects as we grow into it.

I dream of transforming HR in most organisations. I consistently advocate that HR is not just an administrative job tucked away at the end of the office, limited to recruitment, selection, or filing.

HR is one of the main pillars of any organisation; it’s about people. We are there to look after the employees on behalf of the company and, at the same time, provide valuable feedback to ensure things can be achieved collaboratively. We serve as the critical link between both sides.

That’s why I always say, “Be the change you want to see and empower others to do the same.” HR will never be a business that fades away because people will always be essential. Especially in the hospitality industry, where service defines success, you cannot deliver excellence without your people.

Hotel Insider: With your invaluable experience in HR and psychology, where do you see the role of psychology and emotional intelligence play out in HR practices and the hiring process?

Shaly: EQ plays a significant role because emotional intelligence is a topic that many leaders discuss nowadays, particularly in areas such as relationship building, conflict resolution, engagement, and retention. For me, when it comes to recruitment and selection, especially in leadership hiring or hiring for potential leadership roles, EQ is absolutely crucial. Understanding others and their emotions, as well as being aware of your own, is vital.

This is why so many people emphasise that leaders must focus on understanding their own

Working Women

emotions and learning how to manage them, as well as understanding the emotions of those around them to lead effectively. In recruitment, this is one area I prioritise. It helps me when structuring questions and assessments around these qualities.

In a resort environment, where you often work in groups or teams, isolated from family members and friends, adapting to a new environment is challenging. A sense of belonging within a dynamic group setting is essential, and EQ plays a critical role in understanding and managing your emotions. This is key to adjusting to new environments, situations, or roles.

Hotel Insider: What are your aspirations for the Maldives' HR ecosystem in the future, and how do you see yourself contributing to its evolution?

Shaly: For the HR ecosystem of the future, as I’ve mentioned, the new generation, specifically the Alpha Generation, will be very different from those we have worked with in the past. In 5-10 years, we will need more mentors, and guidance and coaching will play a significant role, as research, current articles, and expert opinions in the field suggest. This generation will require more support, and that is an area where HR will evolve and take shape.

For me, I recently completed my international coaching certification from the Coaching Federation. This was part of upgrading my skills and becoming future-ready so that I can contribute effectively to coaching and mentoring initiatives.

Hotel Insider: AI and digital transformation are reforming HR. How do you envision these technologies enhancing talent management and employee engagement in the future?

Shaly: I think it plays a hugely positive role. I am someone who truly encourages and welcomes digital transformation because, looking back to when I first started in HR, I remember the significant amount of administrative work and the many hours spent behind a desk. Now, with AI and various digital platforms, those tasks have become much easier.

These transformations have greatly streamlined our day-to-day data management, freeing up time for more human-centred activities. We can now spend more time in the field, engaging with people in operations, which is what employees truly need, they need someone to listen to them and understand their concerns.

However, it's crucial to understand that AI or digital platforms will never replace us entirely because the human touch is irreplaceable. This

human connection is what people value the most, and it remains the most important and beautiful part of being in HR.

Hotel Insider: Pre-opening hotels come with its challenges. What lessons did you learn from these experiences, and how have they influenced your approach to HR management?

Shaly: Pre-opening has been challenging. It’s not the same as joining a resort where everything is already set up, and you can simply pick up the manual and start working. In a pre-opening, you’re there from day one, you’re among the first people hired by the company, becoming one of its foundations. Before others join, you’re responsible for developing what will work and what won’t. Once the resort becomes operational, you can see your contributions reflected in its development. While it may be difficult, at the end of the day, seeing all those efforts come to fruition is incredibly rewarding.

After completing the pre-opening of my first property, I realised this was what I wanted to do. It’s more challenging and far more interesting because you get to create different concepts, contribute your ideas, and see them come to life. From the people I’ve spoken to, many agree that once you’ve done one preopening, you’re likely to do another, simply to have the opportunity to create something new. The experience is exciting, and you get to influence HR processes and implement changes. In established organisations, big changes are often resisted, but in a pre-opening, you can make incremental contributions that pave the way for further advancements in HR.

I’ve been fortunate with pre-openings. For me, achieving a higher percentage of locals in the workforce during pre-openings has not been particularly challenging. From day one, we set targets, and leadership, management, and owners have always been very supportive of these goals. It’s an area I’m especially proud of because there’s so much local talent, and it’s just a matter of strategising and bringing them on board, particularly during a pre-opening.

Hotel Insider: As a certified coach and mentor, what have been some of your most rewarding experiences in revamping the careers of aspiring HR professionals?

Shaly: That is something I would love to talk about. When I became an HR professional leader, I made it a priority to nurture local talent. I have always taken on trainees new to HR, and seeing them develop into directors or managers has been the most rewarding experience. Across all the pre-openings and properties I have worked at, I have helped

shape the careers of many young local HR professionals, placing them in reputable resorts as HR leaders. This has been incredibly fulfilling. None of the HR teams I’ve worked with so far have left the HR field or remained in the same position, they’ve all grown into accomplished HR professionals. They are like my stars, and I stay in touch with them. I have different groups, and they still reach out to me, whether they’ve received another offer, are considering a career move, or are facing a challenging situation at work and need guidance.

Hotel Insider: Gender equality is a key commitment of yours. What practical steps can organizations take today to ensure more inclusive and diverse workplaces in the tourism industry?

Shaly: Promoting gender equality within the workplace is crucial for creating a fair and inclusive environment. A practical approach to achieving this goal is to initiate the Human Resources Planning stage, where a broader recruitment pool is established by seeking diverse talent and ensuring equitable opportunities.

One important focus is collaborating with management to understand the gender gap and ensure there are no pay disparities when preparing job offers. Empowering female applicants and employees to negotiate their salaries effectively is vital to encouraging them to recognise their value. Other strategies to close the gender gap include fostering a safe work environment and promoting female workers on the front lines to demonstrate the value we place on their contributions.

Prioritising employee growth and success is essential. I take a personal approach to development by offering one-on-one assistance and providing necessary resources and training to ensure everyone has the tools needed to succeed.

As a mother, I understand that employees have personal responsibilities outside of work, such as caring for children. To support them, we should encourage flexible working arrangements that allow employees to balance their work and personal lives.

As leaders, we should take pride in fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment that encourages female employees and minorities to thrive, providing them with the training and guidance needed to excel in their careers.

Back of the Haus

The Meeru Coral Restoration Project

In this edition of Back of the Haus, we highlight Meeru Island Resort’s Coral Restoration Project, an ongoing effort aimed at reviving the island’s delicate coral reefs. The resort’s commitment to preserving the surrounding marine ecosystems ensures the continued health and diversity of marine life for years to come.

1

The Meeru Coral Garden Project was conceived in 2017 in the wake of the catastrophic effects of the 2015 El Niño on the Maldives’ coral reefs. Proposed by Hussein Afeef and brought to life in cooperation with 'Save the Beach,' a renowned Maldivian NGO, the project focuses on coral reef restoration.

2

'Save the Beach' marine biologists spent the first year assisting and training the Meeru team. Different coral planting techniques, such as metal frames and cement blocks, were utilised, along with regular cleaning and maintenance as the corals began to grow.

3

A preliminary survey was carried out in the surrounding waters of Meeru to assess the marine environment and identify the most optimal locations for the coral restoration project.

4

The preliminary survey involved mapping the area, evaluating water conditions, and examining the existing coral health to determine the best sites for coral planting and growth. Concrete rocks, used to recreate the natural reef environment, presented corals glued with to concrete.

The frames, which were easily welded on-site at the resort, were deployed in designated coral propagation areas, anchored 2 feet into the lagoon floor. They were kept slightly elevated to ensure proper water flow around the corals. Care was taken to avoid damaging existing live corals during deployment, and the frames were arranged aesthetically. 5

6

Using data collected ,the team sought to evaluate the present fish biodiversity. While additional surveys might be necessary, they found that, due to the nursery's high three-dimensional structure, a considerable number of new species had emerged, with the Blue-stripe Snappers being particularly present.

Yes, Chef

Federico Tidu

Hailing from Cagliari, the capital city of the Italian island of Sardinia, Chef Federico Tidu was introduced to the art of cuisine at the age of 13 when his mother began guiding him to prepare family lunches from her written recipes. Chef Federico also spent weekends at his father’s butcher shop, learning the art of butchery, understanding cuts of meat and the importance of respecting each and every part of the animal.

While enrolled in the Hospitality School in Cagliari, he worked alongside his father in the shop and over the years, the experience cultivated a robust work ethic and honed his butchery skills under the watchful guidance of his meticulous father. In 2002, Federico earned his Diploma in Culinary Arts and Restaurant Services, which then fueled his celebrated career in Michelin starred restaurants and luxury 5-star hotels and resorts.

Chef Federico’s culinary quest has taken him to the kitchens of Tivoli Restaurant and Hotel Tyrol in Italy, Pilu at Freshwater and Cable Beach Hotel in Australia and the celebrated Bvlgari Restaurant in Japan. He then spearheaded Limone Dining in Australia, a fine dining establishment where he emphasised the quality of local produce and culinary artistry.

In 2018, Chef Federico joined the team of Jonah’s Restaurant in Australia, eventually becoming their Executive Chef. Throughout his culinary journey, Chef Federico has

curated and hosted myriads of private dinners, delivering exceptional gastronomic experiences. He is now the Executive Chef at COMO Cocoa Island in the Maldives. We, at Hotel Insider, spoke to Chef Federico about his experiences in the world of cuisine.

Hotel Insider: When you were introduced to the art of cooking as a child, did you develop a passion for it instantly and realise that it was what you wanted to do for the rest of your life?

Federico: At 13, it was pure curiosity. A career as a chef wasn’t even on my radar. My mother sparked my interest and my father helped me develop my skills. They taught me discipline and a deep respect for quality ingredients, even if I didn’t realise it at the time. The turning point came during my first experience in a Michelin-starred restaurant. The precision, techniques, and depth of flavour captivated me. From that moment, I knew I wanted to fully immerse myself in the culinary arts.

Hotel Insider: Your culinary journey has

"At 13, it was pure curiosity. A career as a chef wasn’t even on my radar. My mother sparked my interest and my father helped me develop my skills. They taught me discipline and a deep respect for quality ingredients."

taken you from Italy to places with varied cuisines like Australia and especially Japan, where its people have a very exotic palate. How did honing your skills in those places affect your growth as a chef?

Federico: Each place left a unique imprint. Italy taught me simplicity and the value of fresh, local ingredients - the foundations of my cooking. Australia opened my eyes to culinary diversity, blending multicultural influences with local produce, encouraging creative experimentation.

Japan was transformative. The discipline, precision, and reverence for ingredients redefined my approach. I learned the power of restraint, the balance of umami, and how minimalism can create profound impact.

Together, these experiences broadened my palate, refined my techniques, and reinforced the belief that great food is about respecting the ingredients, culture, and people.

Hotel Insider: After your year in Tokyo, you were part of Limone Dining, a new fine dining restaurant in Australia. How was the experience of a restaurant opening and what were the challenges you faced within the process of creating a new culinary establishment as the Head Chef and a business partner?

Federico: Opening Limone Dining was both exciting and intense. As Head Chef and business partner, I was responsible for creating more than just the menu, I was building a vision.

The first challenge was assembling a passionate team who shared that vision. Then came logistics: sourcing quality ingredients, designing the kitchen, and ensuring every detail was ready for opening day.

Developing the menu was the most rewarding challenge, balancing innovation with local flavours. Seeing guests enjoy the result made it all worthwhile. It was a test of creativity, leadership, and resilience, but also deeply fulfilling.

Hotel Insider: You began your tenure as Executive Chef at COMO Cocoa Island quite recently. What has the experience been like for you, working in the Maldives, culturally? Have you tried any local cuisine and wanted to experiment with it or

incorporate it into your creations?

Federico: The Maldives feels like a natural extension of my Sardinian roots. Both islands share a profound connection to the ocean, with seafood at the heart of their culinary traditions.

I’ve delved into Maldivian cuisine and found it incredibly inspiring. The focus on freshness, simplicity, and bold spices resonates deeply with me. I aim to honour the rich bounty of the Indian Ocean while showcasing my passion for fine cuisine.

Hotel Insider: Out of all the kitchens you have graced, which experience resonated with you the most?

Federico: Japan, particularly at Bulgari Restaurant, stands out. The pursuit of perfection, precision, and balance left a lasting impression.

The Japanese concept of kaizen which means “continuous improvement” resonates deeply with me. It’s a philosophy I carry into every dish, striving for excellence without compromise.

Hotel Insider: Is there anyone in the culinary field that consistently inspires you? And is there anything you would like to say to those who wish to follow in your footsteps?

Federico: Many inspire me. NOMA, Joël Robuchon, Norbert Niederkofler, and Gaggan Anand. All of these chefs redefine sustainability, dining experiences, and the connection between food, place, and nature.

For aspiring chefs: stay humble, never stop learning, and challenge yourself. Embrace new techniques, strive for perfection, and remain true to your passion and creativity.

Hotel Insider: Who is your greatest champion in your culinary journey that you would like to thank?

Federico: A chef and close friend mentored me during the early stages of my career. His focus on fundamentals and discipline shaped who I am today. While I prefer to keep his name private, I am forever grateful for his guidance and wisdom, which were instrumental in my journey.
