Diagnosis: Morel-Lavallée Lesion Morel-Lavallée lesions are fluid collections that occur in the subcutaneous fat, most commonly over the greater trochanter. The mechanism of injury is a closed degloving injury, and the fluid collection may be filled with serous fluid, bloody fluid, or debris. Ultrasound or MRI will show an encapsulated fluid collection containing simple or complex fluid, with or without debris, the latter representing fat or blood products. Treatment can start with aspiration, but surgical resection of the capsule may be necessary if fluid reaccumulates in the collection.
