and private healthcare research institutions, must transition from ICD-9 to the ICD-10 coding system. To prepare, HSS implemented an early adoption program in 2012 to launch the new coding system on October 1, 2013 for the systems that are ready to begin the transition to ICD-10. ICD-10 is the World Health Organization’s international standard used for inpatient and outpatient diagnoses, as well as inpatient procedures. Codes are the language of healthcare and impact virtually all areas of the industry. Upgrading to ICD-10 captures significantly more detailed data which can be used to make ongoing improvements in patient care, quality reviews, medical research, reimbursement and electronic health records. The transition to ICD-10 represents a significant undertaking and impacts every aspect of the Hospital and physicians’ revenue cycle, as well as clinical documentation, patient care and information technology.
