M

att Ozturk, president of The Granite Place, knows Southwest Floridians have impeccable taste. He travels the world — Italy, Brazil, India, Turkey and Spain — in search of the best quality natural stone available. That commitment to quality shines through the moment you walk through the showroom door. With an inventory of more than 200 colors, the showroom is like an art gallery of stones ranging from classic Carrera marble to bold Blue Bahia granite. Each stone is top quality, from basics to truly breathtaking exotics with vivid color patterns and motion. In fact, the Granite Place’s selection is so unique that customers fly in from out of state — even out of country — to select exotics that cannot be found anywhere else! Ozturk believes that a key to success is to personally inspect and hand select the stone he imports. He searches for balanced pattern and movement, popular stones that are “of the moment,” rare finds, and quality. Area fabricators, designers, builders, contractors and cabinet makers rely on The Granite Place to provide the products their own clients demand and expect. To ensure only the highest quality is delivered, the well-trained staff at the Granite Place only utilizes stones that are free of fissures and cracks to avoid problems during fabrication. Since opening its doors in 2005, this small family business has grown every year. The Granite Place now operates in two locations — Sarasota and North Port. Both locations have built their success and reputation on unrivaled customer service and the best selection of stone anywhere in the region. To see all that The Granite Place has to offer, visit the Sarasota showroom at 2328 N Washington Blvd., or view the full inventory online at thegraniteplace.net.

Congratulations, Jim! Not surprising, you are a true professional - very aggressive while always remaining a gentleman - can be very difficult; you are the best at it!

— rodney I can’t thank you enough for your hard work, professionalism and diligence put forth in selling my home. Although my house was only a few years old and only on the market for five months, most buyers were opting for new construction in the area. At one point, I wanted to give up, as I felt like I could not compete with the builders. Your team never gave up, never allowed me to give up and certainly remained positive during this time. Your knowledge of the market (especially in Lakewood Ranch), as well as the consistent feedback, were what made this possible. There are many REALTORS out there, but I would highly recommend your team if a buyer and/or seller want to see results. Attention to detail, knowledge of the market (both from a buyer and seller standpoint), honesty and integrity is how I would best describe your team. Great job!

— dawn g. Working with Jim and Donna is like finding a rare gem. ... They combine hard work, perseverance and, above all, integrity. Finding the right buyer or the right home for their clients is not just their job, it is their passion. Thank you, Jim and Donna Soda.

Table Top | Fine Linens | Unique Gifts | Home Accents

64 South Palm Avenue, Sarasota, FL | 941.444.7969 | MelangeHomeDecor.com

The 3-T’s of Luxury Linens Mélange Home, Sarasota The bedroom should be the one room where you can find serenity. Linens, lighting, and color all add to the elements of this most private sanctuary. “It is very helpful as we build individual bedroom retreats without intimidation to remember what I call the 3 T’s - touch, tranquility and texture,” explains Heather Weisenborn, new owner of Sarasota’s Mélange Home. The home décor shop carries luxury bedding and bath linens, fine glass and dinnerware, unique home décor and gifts. Weisenborn brings a wealth of retail knowledge to the well-established shop, adding new products while expanding upon its quality cottons, linens, velvets and silks including Sferra, Yves Delorme, Anali, Frette, Hamburg House, Peacock Alley, Matouk and many more. “I use these three simple thoughts to help my clients narrow their selections when choosing luxury linens and other elements for their bedrooms,” says Weisenborn.

Touch Your bed is the most functional piece of furniture in your home, Weisenborn says “so choose a material that feels great to you.” Don’t get hung up on thread count. She says a high thread count does not always make a luxury linen. The quality of the cotton, linen or silk is the #1 factor in producing the buttery feel of long wearing sheets. Actually feel the fabric before making your selection.

Tranquility As the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing at night, create a restful space. Ground your room with neutral colors and add in tranquil palettes such as blues, greens and lavenders. Surround yourself in colors that encourage you to breathe deeply. Another important aspect to tranquility in the bedroom, says Weisenborn is appropriate lighting. Lamps with a shade to defuse the light are essential to creating an inviting space to unwind and relax.

Texture Just as your bed is the most functional piece of furniture in your home, it’s many times the largest piece of furniture. Finish off the top of your bed by adding texture with decorative pillows, and throws. Mix velvet with linen and sequins with cotton. “These are the finishing touches that reflect your style,” notes Weisenborn. If you leave off the texture your room will look unfinished and not tethered to the rest of the style in your space.”

Mélange Home owner Heather Weisenborn, with daughters Charlotte (6) and Hadley Grace (4), and husband Jeff.

WATERFRONT wonderland

COASTAL STYLE ON LONGBOAT KEY

26

HOME & DESIGN 2017 V1

A multitude of mullioned windows, a metal roof, and a high contrast between the light-colored stucco and the dark brown shutters, and garage doors by D & D Garage Doors combine with lush tropical landscaping to create the coastal style of the home. The stately, yet welcoming design of the front elevation, is one of builder John Cannon’s favorite features.

HOME & DESIGN 2017 V1

C

Calling it “calming and exciting at the same time,” Longboat Key residents Keith and Kristie Harrison loved living on the water, so much so that when a vacant lot with both canal and bay frontage became available, they seized the opportunity to build a new home on it, in concert with John Cannon Homes. The design-build firm has completed over 370 custom waterfront homes during its 30 years in business, each with its own particular set of requirements and goals.

Below: A wall of windows in this sitting area commands a view of the bay. Tempus Pro Services completed the audio-visual in the home including a TV which rises from the custom-built, wood-top bar. Harrison created what she jokingly refers to as the world’s largest sofa by combining leather sectionals. A striped, occasional chair and the Palecek Owen seagrass chair from Robb & Stucky rounds out the seating. Harrison further unified the living area with four table lamps which were custom-painted using automotive paint for a glossy-finish. Right: A spectacular view greets you in the main living area where a pair of chaises from Jonathan Adler invites lounging by the fire on custom-made pillows from Robb & Stucky, snuggled under raw-linen, ombre throws from Mélange Home. Between the chaises is a glass-topped, hand-woven, natural seagrass coffee table. A Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams rectangular cocktail table in acrylic, glass, and polished stainless steel serves the sofa. Twin Drexel Heritage stepped étagères flank the fireplace. The light-colored furnishings are set atop a dark wood, plank flooring from Design Works.

HOME & DESIGN 2017 V1

“It was very important to maximize every available square foot of allowable building area while respecting how this home’s shadows fall on adjacent properties, all the while taking advantage of the spectacular waterfront views of Sarasota Bay,” John Cannon explains. John Cannon Homes’ design-build approach couples the firm’s professional design expertise with superior construction practices to ensure the finished home is a true reflection of the client’s character and sense of style. The process solicits input from the client along the way and in this case, the team reworked several aspects, which resulted in opening up the main floor to create one room with living, dining, kitchen, and family room areas. “It was the best change we made,” explains homeowner Kristie Harrison, an interior decorator who served as her own client. Kristin Goff, ASID, NCDIQ, of Robb & Stucky International’s Sarasota store, aided Harrison in her search for the perfect furnishings. Heather Weisenborn of Mélange Home Décor sourced seaworthy accessories.

Above: Central to the kitchen is the dual surfaced island. Carrera marble from Distinctive Surfaces covers the work areas. The same wood treatment found on the TV cabinet provides a warm countertop for casual dining. Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances are from Mullet’s Appliances. A trio of single-light, chrome pendants illuminates the island. A drum chandelier hangs above a semi-circular, zinc-topped table. A quartet of woven counter-height chairs encircles the unique table. Left: A custom-built dining table with glass top is impervious to water marks and other damage. “That’s a hallmark of mine,” says Harrison, “Topping pieces with glass protects the furniture without distracting from the beauty.” Seating is a combination of upholstered end-chairs, and Stewart seagrass and teak side- chairs, with custom chair pads in Robert Allen’s Grand Chenille fabric from Robb & Stucky. Harrison used slat stock as crown moulding throughout the home to unify the space, and serve as a valance for the window treatments. HOME & DESIGN 2017 V1

HOME & DESIGN 2017 V1

“The Coastal style is well-suited for both the neighborhood and the Harrisons’ lifestyle. A balance of new trends, such as the intricately detailed coffered ceilings, with timeless features such as the open floor plan keeps this home relevant,” continues Cannon. “A house takes on a personality and after you start making a few decisions the process gets easier because you let the house tell you what it should look like,” muses Harrison.

Above: The slender, oval, freestanding, 2-person soaking tub nestles under an arched wall covered in the same Carrera marble as the master bath floor, shower stall, and countertops from Distinctive Surfaces. Glossy-white subway tiles climb the sides of the arch and shower walls. Pristine, custom cabinetry, accented with crystal knobs, sparkles under the light from a five-arm chandelier with crystal-drop accents.

Left: With its view of the bay, Kristie Harrison says awakening in the master bedroom feels like she’s on a cruise ship. An upholstered bed with nail-head trim is dressed in custom linens from Mélange Home. A small-scale sofa, covered in the same fabric as the bed is placed against its footboard. Cylindrical, Palacek seagrass drum-stools from Robb & Stucky are paired with the sofa, atop a Turkish area rug in muted tones of cream, and blue. Drexel Heritage side tables, also of seagrass, are topped with Harrison’s signature glass. A pair of EJ Victor Mr. Loud wingchairs, and matching Baker ottoman offer relaxing water views.

“You also have to keep in mind how the house will be used. This house will host adults and babies, so even though most of my furniture pieces are upholstered in white, I used outdoor fabrics wherever I could and I covered most of the case goods with custom glass. With her love of seashells as inspiration, Harrison chose a soft palette of whites and tans, mingled with grays and blues inspired by the sea to create the coastal ambiance of this waterfront wonderland.

Above: Extensive use of glass, mirrors, crystal accents, and white cabinetry combine with brushed-nickel fixtures, and chrome accessories for a brilliant guest bath. Floored in white tile, a mosaic-tile rug by Design Works is composed of Carrera marble.

Left: Upstairs, the home has five guest bedrooms plus a nursery, all situated to take advantage of the waterfront. Custom bedding from Robb & Stucky graces an upholstered bed in this guest room. Ralph Lauren lamps on Stanley side tables from Robb & Stucky cast a soft glow. Facing the window is a double chaise in neutral tones with bolsters. A lantern stool serves as a side table.

The fullsize, custom-built porch swing from Advantage Trim & Lumber of Florida is dressed with blue and aqua Elaine Smith decorative outdoor pillows, and Textillery outdoor throws from Mélange Home. Right: Taking advantage of the wide-water view, an infinity-edge pool and spa are embellished with glass mosaic tile and a fire bowl. The rear elevations show the intricate details and architecture of the seaside retreat.

HOME & DESIGN 2017 V1

The walled and gated compound is served by a driveway and motor court that ties the two homes together. Its brick pavers were imported from Central America. Pristine, neatly manicured landscape design by ArtisTree Landscape Maintenance & Design completes the impressive entryway. Powder-coated aluminum balcony railings resemble the wrought iron counterparts found on balconies across the Mediterranean. Builder Rob Jacobson followed the old world Mediterranean method of laying the clay tile roof. Despite an old-world feel, the house is fully automated. Every aspect of connectivity to mechanical, surveillance, and in-house technology systems can be controlled remotely from a mobile device according to architect Mark Beebe.

Lancaster crafted an interior design style she calls Southern European. “It’s a chic, but casual look,” she notes. Exquisite tile work designed by Lancaster and painstakingly handcrafted by Jacobson’s master tile cutter serves as an example of the meticulous attention to detail in the home. The scroll design was overlaid on the tile in front of the Victoria & Albert Marlborough freestanding tub from The Plumbing Place. The stone was cut and replaced with hand-clipped lavender marble tile to create the mosaic design. The process was repeated in the shower. A six-arm crystal chandelier from the John Richard Collection sparkles above the inset. Lancaster designed the custom-built cabinets with antique mirror drawer fronts. Sumptuous Austrian shades in the Osbourne & Little fabric coordinate the bed and bath spaces.

Osbourne & Little fabric covers the Eloquence Grande Boudoir bench. Twin Highview chairs and an ottoman from Century offer a cozy place to enjoy the water view. Lancaster sourced various fabrics in the home from International Design Source.

Floor-to-ceiling windows in this 10th-floor penthouse offer magnificent views of Sarasota Bay all the way to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa. The terrace provides 5,000-square-feet of outdoor living. Because the main living area is so large, designer Topp created several intimate seating areas. The TV area to the right features Lexington Home Mirage Marilyn ottomans, Ondine tables with silver-leaf finish, and Kravet Denham Lounge Swivel Chairs; at left is cocktail seating. Both areas are anchored by Lee Jofa rugs. The CTH-Sherrill console table near the windows is a favorite spot of the homeowners, where they can snack and watch TV or face the spectacular water view. Ronna Romney wanted her newly purchased penthouse at Longboat Key Club Bayside to sparkle. And sparkle it does — in the day when the sun shines in and at night, thanks to spectacular lighting choices. “Lighting, for me, is very important,” she says. “I love to walk out on the terrace and see the rooms lit up. It’s like a jewel in the sky. The chandeliers look like stars falling from heaven.” Romney and her husband, Bruce Kulp, bought the 4,600-square-foot condominium in late 2015. The 20-yearold unit needed major updating and they turned to interior designer Deeia Topp, who had worked with them on a previous Florida home. “Deeia pulled in the builder, architectural designer, and fine custom cabinet maker, and we had an outstanding team.” The couple’s goal was to create a haven. “We’ve led busy lives and I wanted to walk in and see it as a soft, comforting refuge,” Romney notes. The color palette is designed to be warm and inviting, but a neutral backdrop for their extensive collection of art. “I didn’t want any colors in the house to compete with the natural colors of the grand view.” Architectural designer Rick Arieno, owner of Arieno Custom Home Design, says condos are always a design challenge. “There are things you can’t change, but it’s always fun to explore, push the limits, and see what we can do to really make it feel fresh,” he points out. “We ended up removing a couple of walls and reconfiguring some of the spaces. We’re all proud of the transformation. As beautiful as it is in the daytime with the views, it really stands out at night.”

MODERN masterpiece

ARTFUL CONTEMPORARY DESIGN

HOME & DESIGN 2017 V1

R

Bold, beautiful, and show-stopping are the terms designer Darla Cook uses when describing this modern masterpiece that she and her team at Green Life Luxury Homes worked to create. The home was purchased just after construction began. Cook revised the original plan to create the new homeowner’s contemporary dream. “We were trying to achieve a fresh look at contemporary, not like anything seen in our target market” says Cook. One of the more prominent features in this home is the artwork. Clearly much consideration went into finding pieces that would fit this modern look and make a bold statement in the space. Two local artists were commissioned; Leisa Young did an abstract piece in the entry on lexan with metal standoffs, framed by 80-inch long wall sconces. The second artist, Tucker Lenore - created six 3-by-8-foot irregular panels in the 24-foot high great room. “This art was inspired by the homeowner’s vision and Tucker turned that into something so original, you just stand there in awe looking at it. I cannot imagine the room without that art,” exclaims Cook.

Left: Unlike anything on the market today, Darla Cook and her team at Green Life Luxury Homes created a fresh take on contemporary. The impressive exterior sets the stage for what the interior will reveal. The combination of light stacked stone with medium toned wood creates a light palette with plenty of texture and character. Two large fire bowls flanking the entrance add a sense of grandeur, while luscious landscaping creates an oasis surrounding the home. HOME & DESIGN 2017 V1

79

Lighting is another design element that played a major role in Cook’s eyes. While the lighting was pulled from different sources, it was carefully selected to accentuate each room. The fire bowls used at the front entrance and pool area create that tropical paradise. The interior fixtures are works of art in their own right, adding a new dimension to the individual spaces. Serving as architect, interior designer, and builder gave Green Life Luxury Homes the unique opportunity to truly have a hand in all aspects of this home. From floor to ceiling, the fluidity and continuity of the design is apparent in every room. “This is truly one of the most amazing homes we have had the pleasure of building. Making all of the interior and exterior selections from napkin drawing, to the place mats, we did it all, and enjoyed every moment,” states Cook. It is evident that all the design selections and decisions were carefully considered to maintain that integrity for the overall design.

Above: The entry to the home reveals the bold, contemporary design. An impressive foyer features a 24-by-24inch Crystal White Porcelain tile provided by Omicron Tile & Granite, installed by Illusions Tile & Marble. A clean, white palette serves as the backdrop to showcase an exceptional abstract art piece commissioned by local artist Leisa Young. This bright, striking piece, painted on lexan and supported by metal standoffs, appears to float on the wall while framed by two 80-inch long metal wall sconces. Rugs from Rugs as Art line the hall and help to soften the space. Right: The modern look is brought to life in this spacious great room. White floors and walls once again set the stage for the artwork to shine. Inspired by the homeowner’s vision local artist Tucker Lenore created six over-sized, irregular shaped panels. Automated roller shades in the room and throughout the home are by Blinds by Design. A light colored sectional and chairs, highlighted with bright colored throw pillows from Robb & Stucky add comfort to the room. The space is grounded by an abstract rug from Rugs as Art.

Above: The master bathroom once again continues the prominent monochromatic theme by combining several different tiles to create a crisp look. Large porcelain tiles grace the floor while 12-by-24-inch rectangular tile is used on the walls to add a different dimension to the room. A Carrara Marble mosaic accent tile runs vertically down the center of the shower wall, creating a subtle contrast. The plumbing fixtures are from the Hansgrohe Pura Vida collection sourced from Ferguson Kitchen, Bath & Lighting Gallery, are among Cook’s favorites.

Right: In the master bedroom high gloss white 24-by-24-inch porcelain tile is combined with a medium toned bamboo wood inlay by Omicron Tile & Granite, to create a work of art all its own. A canopy bed in stainless steel gives an industrial feel to the room. Paired with an elegant cobalt velvet bench with acrylic legs, the room takes on a sense of glamour. Three dazzling artwork panels help to accentuate this lavishness by bringing more color into the space and adding an organic feeling to the room.

Left: This bedroom takes on a somewhat more delicate feel than the rest of the home. Moving away from the white-on-white color scheme, the introduction of the wood flooring creates a warm, inviting space. The upholstered bed harmonizing with the rich, dark wood on the nightstands and dresser produces an atmosphere of luxury that draws you into the room. Even the artwork selected for this room is subtle, composed mostly of wood, bringing a more natural feel into the space.

“Absolutely the most stunning site on which I have ever worked, is how this sprawling home is described by the builder Dwayne Robinson of D.E. Robinson Construction Group. The compound, realized by residential designer Jon Coulthurst of JC Drafting & Design, rests on two waterfront lots at the northern point of Casey Key, looking toward the Intracoastal Waterway. The owners, a couple from Ohio who have built previous Southwest Florida homes, including two designed by Coulthurst, spotted one of the lots while driving around. They were so enamored by the views, they bought the adjoining lot as well.

Below: Mahogany banded oval windows flank the mahogany double front door in the foyer. Inset barred glass and a transom above the door add to the flood of light already streaming in from the casement windows. The ceiling is mahogany tongue-and-groove. Mexican Saltillo tiles with handmade insets tiles in shades of cobalt and cream adorn the floor. The hallway continues into the key drop area that sports a bespoke wood cabinet with a quartz top. Above the custom mahogany and iron balustrade hangs a canvas created by a local artist from a photo taken in Greece by the owners. The Livex Lighting Coronado scrolled iron and alabaster chandelier is from Bee Ridge Lighting.

The center houses the main kitchen and living areas. The back of the home facing the water offers a pool and recreation area for family get-togethers. “Projects are much easier when everyone contributes to the finished design and works collaboratively,” Coulthurst says. “The owners, with whom I have worked on several of their homes, had definite ideas of what they wanted. I listened carefully, putting the pieces together and coming up with a design they found very pleasing.”

The bed is clad in Indian print linens, recalling the days of the Raj, with a dragonfly accent pillow bringing a touch of whimsy. Matching nightstands hold painted porcelain column lamps with bronze paper shades, casting warm light, as does the Kichler Hatteras Bay fan hanging from the Cove crown moulding-accented ceiling. The teak wood settee at the foot of the bed features a delicate scrollwork design and offers a home to floral needlepoint pillows. A message pillow joins the printed cotton cushions of the overstuffed rattan armchair with hassock. Next to it sits a wrought iron and teak table. A vintage French dressmaker’s model sports a grass skirt, a nod to the owner’s love of Hawaii. Porcelain plank flooring continues in this room. Coulthurst worked closely alongside his son, Justin, to whom he is teaching the business. “In a few years, I may ride off into the sunset knowing I’ve left the business in good hands,” he says. For now, working with his son, Dwayne, and cooperative and creative owners is all any residential designer could wish. Coulthurst affirms, “I take great pride in seeing the homeowner’s satisfaction in a well-designed home.”

Above: Hot aqua walls set the tone for this marine-themed bedroom. The white painted panel bed with cutwork headboard hosts a bevy of sea creatures. A white column lamp, with linen shade, and an Asian coin lamp top the small maple end tables. The slate grey porcelain plank floor plays host to a brushed velvet area rug in a vibrant teal. More touches of color are provided by the egg-yellow metal stools and the Millennium RLM pendant lights from Bee Ridge Lighting that echo the soft robin’s egg blue of the walls. Right: Amaretto pavers form the deck around the 16-by-32-foot rectangular pool, which offers relaxed sunbathing via brown wicker rattan chairs and chaises. Robinson constructed a custom teak credenza to house pool toys, cleaning equipment and the pools’ automatic safety cover. The pool itself has a white Pebble Tec finish, set with shimmering flakes of Abalone. All terracing is created from Oldcastle Anchor Diamond retaining walls in Sandstone, housing a myriad of tropical plants and serving as a backdrop to the towering coconut palms. Long gallery porches topped with tongue-and-groove mahogany ceilings are lit for nighttime use and screened porches on both the East and West retreats provide spaces for outdoor dining or a spot to wait out passing summer showers. Seen in the far right of the photo is a spiral staircase which leads up to the living area of the West retreat.

TRENDS

Contemporary Cabinetry

In this kitchen, perimeter cabinets are both white and grey tied together by the island base while counter tops vary from perimeter to island. Becoming more popular are designs featuring a combination of high gloss and wood grain finishes.

In business over 30 years, Jerry and Connie Beatty, owners of Contemporary Cabinetry & Closet Concepts easily identify distinct trends in luxury custom cabinetry. From heart of the home kitchens to wellappointed closets, the team at Contemporary designs, manufactures, finishes and installs its creations. As kitchens become a focal point in more open concept homes, clients are focusing on the aesthetic details as well as the function. Double islands are becoming popular design variations, for homeowners who have the room, utilizing this space to include a second dishwasher, prep sink and maintain a work space while having an island at which guests can be seated while the host or hostess is preparing food. “Mixing of materials and finishes and color is the most recent trend”, notes Connie. “Wall and base cabinets are different while metal framed doors

with glass or acrylic inserts allow for endless variations to personalize the kitchen.” LED, puck or strip lighting showcase glassware and dishes, in the cabinets, as well as adding ambiance and lighting up the counter top with under cabinet lighting. The attention to detail is portrayed in other areas of the home: Intricate and custom design is increasingly important to homeowners for offices, entertainment centers, libraries, wall beds, closets and garages. “Whatever the project” Jerry says, “we customize the cabinetry and finishes to accommodate any request. No two projects are alike”.

From contemporary to stately, traditional dressing rooms and closets become a statement. Contemporary’s design staff meet each client to determine how best to use the space based on their wardrobe. You will note in this closet how everything is behind seedy glass doors for a dust free storage area. Attention to detail is apparent from crown and frieze molding, fluted columns and more.

The owners’ art and music collection drove the design of the media room. Soffits skillfully conceal the air conditioning ducts and create recessed gallery lights for art by Gustavo Ramos Rivera, Howie Green, Jack Casey, and Ancizar Marin. The custom built tables by Elite Woodward, mimic Italian design but have moving parts for functionality. The 16-foot long ebony and burled wood media unit also by Elite Woodwork, stores a large album collection. The custom rug, by Modern Nature, is a combination of Nepalese wool and silk viscose. The artistic chandelier is from Light Up Your Life.  110

With stunning gulf to bay views enjoyed by oversized terraces and floor-to-ceiling windows on the exclusive south end of Longboat Key, the location of this condo was perfect. The condo, however, was less so, and did not fit the owners’ needs or desired aesthetic, which includes a love of contemporary Italian furniture, and a collection of contemporary art. “They wanted a place that was going to be bright, airy, minimal, clean, and not cluttered,” says Molly Laub of MKL Interiors. A full renovation, from floor to ceiling, was in order. Gregg Kaplan of LBK Contractors & Design set to work to remove the non-load- bearing walls, and lift the ceilings through most of the home. “In a condo, the biggest issues in opening up a space and lifting ceilings are the air conditioning systems, plumbing stacks, and lighting,” says Kaplan. He came to the project with experience in this particular building’s different floor plans and regulations, an invaluable asset. Kaplan worked with Laub, owners’ Patti Kriger-Schaffer and Michael Schaffer, and Monika Oberer of Light Up Your Life. Together they developed unique ceiling treatments for each room, incorporating a complex and thoughtful lighting plan to diversify and maximize the light, while maintaining architecturally clean lines. Although concrete ceilings are usually the biggest snag in condo renovations, new technology in LED lighting has proven to be a game changer. In this renovation, the Edge lighting system provides direct and ambient lighting specific to each room’s needs and visual advantage. Linear light channels also create light as an artistic element, drawing bright and clean lines flush with the walls.

Right: The private elevator lobby was entirely redesigned and made smaller to include a golf closet. Double doors were replaced by a single mahogany door with a custom-etched glass insert designed by owner Michael Schaffer and designer Laub. The cantilevered mahogany console matches the TV console in the media room. The stars of the room are the complementary wall coverings. One is crushed silver foil by Innovations, and the other silk and bamboo by Hartmann & Forbes. They play off the pearl oak floors, the metallic elements in the sconce provided by Light Up Your Life, and the cleverly repurposed polished chrome appliance handle on the door.

Proper design and installation of floors are just as essential. “No matter how beautiful the material, poor installation will kill the look,” claims Lilliana Allen of Oracle Surfaces, the Sarasota based company that installed the Kåhrs lacqueredpearl Swedish oak floors throughout the condo. When completed, a successful renovation is measured by more than its visual appeal. Laub says her barometer includes the process of the renovation, “a positive perspective on the entire process from the conception of the design, through the construction, installations, and down to the last details, like doorbells.”

Right: Before the renovation, the sitting room was closed in and dark. Breaking down the walls and orienting the furniture horizontally gives every seat an equally impressive view. From this vantage point, the continuity of design elements can be seen throughout the open floor plan. The unique wall covering is a silk string in blues called Frequency by Innovations, and resonates with the Schaffer’s passion for music. Perimeter hidden TruLine lights wash the walls. A console table, mirror, and Murano Due glass bubble chandelier from Light Up Your Life finish the room.

By every measure, the Schaffers love their renovation. They thanked everyone who participated in its creation with an invitation to a celebration in their revamped home. That included the dream team, the craftspeople, and each of the vendors involved. “It was a project of the heart,” boasts Mrs. Kriger-Shaffer.

Below: Custom floating cabinets surround the show-stopper abstract painting by Christopher H. Martin. Cantilevered soffits serve multiple purposes, hiding sprinkler systems, security, electrical and heat components while defining each room, and looking visually interesting.

Left: The design team transformed an isolated, poorly lit kitchen with little counter space into a chef’s kitchen for a chef husband. Built-ins abound, from custom designed cabinets to the cantilevered Caesar Stone quartz countertop breakfast bar. An island cabinet was built around it at the most comfortable height for dining. Stainless steel appliances from Mullets Appliances and a Franke Orca stainless steel sink with Blanco Culina faucet from The Plumbing Place complete a contemporary look. The kitchen benefits from three types of light; LED tape lighting above the suspended ceiling, two drop pendants from Light Up Your Life, and the geometric TruLine lights that frame the room.

The master bedroom was not a part of the renovation, and was designed by the Shaffer’s good friend, New Jersey based interior designer Lori Jacobsen. A Sarasota artist created the lacquered walls using layers of bronze colors for depth and horizontal lines for texture. The carpet perfectly complements the fabrics, walls, and furniture from International Design Source of Sarasota. The Swarovski crystal lamp, desk lamp, and chandelier are from Bee Ridge Lighting.

DREAM HOME, DREAM LANDSCAPING.

“When we decided to build our dream home, there was no doubt that our landscaping had to be part of that dream.” George and “Charley” (Nancy) Turon’s home in The Concession sits on a magnificent preserve with beautiful grasses blending into the hillside. While thrilled with their home’s architectural design, it would be “the magic of landscaping” that would bring their vision to life – a regal row of ligustrum trees for privacy around their pool area, a boulder staircase winding down to the preserve and breathtaking lighting to illuminate pollinator plants and building features. “We have built other homes and designed landscaping, but nothing like what ArtisTree has done,” says Charley. “Our dream landscaping was the result of Joe Mantkowski truly understanding what we wanted. The only way I can describe it is that there are landscape architects and there are those who are true artists.”

ArtisTree Landscape Designer Joe Mantkowski joins George and “Charley” (Nancy) Turon, along with their dog Oakley, outside their residence built by Derek Nelson Homes/Arthur Rutenberg Homes in The Concession.

Palm varieties accentuate the curved brick drive and landscaping at the grand entrance, with a four-car attached garage at the front of the home. Landscape designer Joe Mantkowski of ArtisTree Landscape Maintenance & Design says it was imperative that the landscape not only stood out from street view, but that it was also conducive to the owner’s lifestyle. The irrigation system supports a pleasant tropical greenscape on the property and surrounds the screened-in lanai in the lot’s anterior. Subtle grays of the Echo Ridge dry-stacked Boral Country Ledgestone on the home’s front exterior by Old Castle Coastal set off the red tile roof.

What’s so special about this home? Ask president Derek Nelson and interior designer Julia Hill, both of Nelson Homes in Sarasota, and you hear a similar answer. “I feel like every room, around every corner in this home, there’s a surprise — some special element,” says Hill. Nelson agrees, “Every room is memorable, full of creative spaces.” Nelson and Hill, along with architect Mario Vitorino of Arthur Rutenberg Homes, pulled out all the stops for this thoughtfully designed custom one-story home in The Concession, a prestigious gated golf community boasting an acclaimed course designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin. The 5,207-square-foot, four-bedroom, five-bath residence plus casita sits on 1.2 acres with a creek, and views of a nature preserve. “The owners wanted their home to be open and inviting,” explains Hill. “They are very social and entertain several different groups. Their previous home was much more formal. They wanted this home to be relaxed and contemporary.” Nelson describes this well-appointed home as an unforgettable backdrop for entertaining. The home enjoys the space for a fête of grand proportions while maintaining the easy, intimate design which makes for a quiet evening with close friends. Memorable details mark the home’s signature, soft contemporary style. Everyone’s favorite detail is the kitchen’s countertop bar from Epoch Solutions topped with an underlit color-changing glass surface by Think Glass, creating a sophisticated approach by day, yet a festive mood when the sun goes down.

Left: The living room maintains a comfortable yet sophisticated air with the use of textures. The square Ambella Home Limestone Bowtie Table creates a center focal point. The Vanguard Wellington chairs in Fabricut Mendel Leaf add textured motifs and a sheen to contrast with the flat finish and casual comfort of the Hancock and Moore leather sofas. “With these super high ceilings, adding texture like a wall covering and draperies from ceiling to ground really warmed up the space,” says designer Julia Hill. The exposed trusses in the great room and dining area provide visual anchoring within the open floor plan.

It was this color-changing bar which served as a muse in creating the design palette and textures. The home maintains an uplifting, open tone with clean, yet warm geometric-patterned accents, providing a flexibility of use for both formal and a hint of the whimsical. Each detail in the home hints at a modern, linear design. “It’s definitely more transitional to modern,” says Hill. “We tried to keep it warm and inviting with contemporary flair.”

Above: Guests are invited to linger on the Vanguard seating at the mixed-medium Century woodtopped dining table. A buffet by Kitchen Center Plus with recessed lighting, flanked with dual wine refrigerators, complements the dining area. Pendant lights by Kichler in old bronze finish create a vertical visual delineation between the kitchen and dining area. “It’s a dream for entertaining,” Hill explains. “With the open floor plan, it enables you to flow from one room to the next.” Left: The bar countertop from Epoch Solutions is quite the conversation starter. Guests congregate at the elegant Think Glass kitchen bar where they are treated to a color lightshow as the everyday clear light morphs into a series of colors. The poured concrete counter on the kitchen’s middle island by Jake Brady Concrete by Design, plus an embedded heart and initials designed by the owners, is just another way this home offers surprises at every turn. Extensive cabinetry by Kitchen Center Plus makes the kitchen as functional as it is beautiful, and ties together the kitchen and dining spaces.

She credits the successful outcome to a trusting relationship with the owners, giving them the confidence to explore options. “This house started with a completely different vision; it was more transitional,” she explains. “Then, as we found different products the owners wanted to incorporate into the house, it snowballed into a more contemporary feel. Once we formed a relationship and bond, they placed a lot of trust in me. I was able to push them out of their comfort zone.”

Above: “The windows make it feel like the inside and outside are one,” says Hill of the large master bathroom. “There’s really no separation. It gives a warm tone of natural light.” Large windows in the bathroom look out into a private garden from the freestanding Kohler tub and glass shower enclosure. Creamy oversized 18-by-18-inch Daltile marble flooring, installed by Illusions Tile & Marble and stunning 24- by-24-inch shellstone travertine in the lanai give an even larger feel to these spaces. The custom vanity is by Kitchen Center Plus.

Right: A touch of gray shimmer in the upholstered Vanguard ottomans, and throw pillows pick up the gray tones in flooring and embolden the sky-blue accents in the bedding. Vahallan hand-painted wall coverings, and floor-to-ceiling draperies frame large windows in the master bedroom and bath – as in the main living area, blurring lines between the interior and exterior spaces. Grays in the Mannington Stonehenge walnut 5-inch plank wood flooring throughout the home lend a modern, seamless composition. The whitewash finish on the gray planks provides a more timeless, traditional feel.

Above: A detached casita accents the outdoor living space. It functions as a perfect in-law apartment or guest cottage, complete with a wine cellar and boutique-style living area. Connected to the home through the screened-in lanai, the casita provides a guest bedroom, kitchenette, and an open floor plan complete with a billiards table. The view from the large windows looks out onto the nature preserve. “The casita is a special place,” adds Derek Nelson. “Just a really enjoyable space. It’s another area for relaxing by the fireplace.”

Left: Set off from the rest of the room with a rich, dark finish on the built-in shelves and flooring, the raised platform delineates the connected business center from the main living area. “It makes for a nice setting in the den, creating a distinction between the business and lounge areas,” explains Hill of the space’s layout.

Accessible through the master suite, great room, kitchen, dining area, and the casita, the lanai with a resort-style in-ground heated pool and spa enjoys a shallow sun shelf with Ledge Lounger chaises, an outdoor kitchen, a fireplace, and ample Napoli seating for entertaining guests. Landscape Designer Joe Mantkowski of ArtisTree says privacy was important, so he designed with trees, boulders, and plant material to help blend with the natural setting as though the plantings had always been there.

A flat tile roof in a Santa Paula finish, cabin brown shutters and doors, and brown buff pavers from Tricircle in a Euro Cobble design, combine to give the home its British West Indies design. Following the trend to go larger with exterior lighting, pairs of 24-inch Hinkley Buckeye sconces in bronze, from Ferguson Kitchen, Bath & Lighting Gallery, illuminate the garage and front entrances.

Before venturing into the Sarasota market, Stock Signature Homes took a close look at their most popular models in Naples and Fort Myers according to Vice President of Sales and Marketing Claudine Léger-Wetzel. “We redesigned some of our more popular models specifically for the Sarasota area,” she continues, “introducing The Gardenia one of our larger showcase homes, in Lakewood Ranch.” Architect Greg Weber of South Florida Architecture designed the model to appeal to a broad range of potential buyers. “This four-bedroom home with en suites, study, and large bonus recreational room offers plenty of space for a large family or for empty nesters who often have out-of-town family and friends that come to visit,” Weber explains.

Right: A symmetrical placement of twin, skirted sofas from Lee Industries in Campbell White, paired with two sets of transitional style end tables achieves balance in the great room. One-drawer side tables from Noir Furniture in an ebony finish punctuate the airy space. Another set from Bernhardt in steel and glass emphasize it. Glass table lamps with white parchment shades from Curry & Co. echo the oval shape of the Bernhardt tables. Centered on the entertainment wall is Noir’s Desdemona sideboard in bleached elm. A leather-wrapped console table with steel legs, and a white onyx coffee table, both from Bernhardt, add pattern and texture. A cream monochromatic trellis rug in Snowfall anchors the seating group. A 9-light Frederick Raymond chandelier in light colored wood and iron illuminates the room.

Shades of gray in the kitchen complement the neutral tones of the great room area. United by Happy Floors’ 12-by-24-inch Krea tile are in almond, and the custom built cabinetry glows with an alabaster finish. A backsplash of 1-by-1-inch Lunada Bay Bari agate mosaic in pearl provides a shimmering accent to the quartz countertops in ash gray. A trio of polished nickel pendant lamps hangs over the island. Counter stools from Sunpan sport gray faux-leather seats atop stainless steel bases.

“My favorite features are the relationship and flow of the outdoor living areas to the great room, dining room and bonus room,” Weber continues. “To me, it’s very comfortable when it’s just family, but is also open and spacious enough for a large gathering without feeling crowded.” Léger-Wetzel agrees, adding “The indoor-outdoor flow makes for spectacular Florida living.” Weber cites the simple L-shaped kitchen with a large flush-top center island, the great room concept with one large dining space open to the lanai, and the large outdoor living, dining, and kitchen area as the current design trends found in this home.

Above: An oyster shell chandelier from Curry & Co. hangs suspended from a two-toned crossbeamed tray ceiling identical to that in the great room. Chairs upholstered in pewter with a smoke finish on their oak legs, surround a wood Vanguard pedestal table, finished in mink and edged with embellishment. Visual Comfort’s Hampton Leaf pendant chandelier is finished in Plaster White. The ebony curved leg wood desk from Mandalay rests on a silver shag Surya rug. A desk chair and ottomans are from Lee Industries. Custom fabric from Luton in graphite with nail-head trim covers the 17-by-17-inch cubes. A large-scale silver starburst mirror from Uttermost complements the abstract artwork which dominates the opposite wall. The Roman shade is crafted from an embroidered leaf fabric from Fabricut called On My Mind.

A hand-knotted Capri rug in charcoal from Carpet Source snuggles into the L-shape created by the Rowe Mitchell sectional in Pebble. A Forehand rectangular concrete coffee table lends its weight to the airy retreat. The Rowe side chair is a mid-century modern style called Beckett. Flanking the sectional are Mandalay’s Kaza side tables in an ebony finish. The mirror-front sideboard in gray blue is from Stein World.

“The great room concept is very popular for Stock,” says Léger-Wetzel, “… and for Florida, the Coastal Contemporary design is timeless.” Charlotte Horvath of Soco Interiors interpreted the timelessness of the design with a color palette that gives a light and airy feel to the home. The neutral backdrop allows the house to change with the addition of accessories. Trendy accents such as the oyster shell chandelier and pops of teal and citron in the bonus room inspired Horvath to dub the interior design approach as Sarasota Fresh.

Above: French Clay 12-by-24-inch porcelain tiles in Lumier floor the master bath. The maple Alabaster custom cabinets from Concerto have an edgy, concrete feel to them. A six-light orb chandelier from Crystorama finished in Old Silver dangles overhead. The mirrored drawer- fronts on the Vanguard Griffith dresser finished in antique silver mirror reflect the neutral tones of the Vanguard nightstands, the taupe Jessica Charles Delta chaise lounge, and the Fabricate Urbane area rug in linen. The rawhide rug adds an element of surprise.

Mirage wood flooring with an old maple surface and rock cliff finish adds textural depth and plays up the wood’s individual characteristics. Ornamentation in the living room is minimal. Clean linear shapes express themselves in the vanilla crème leather Savino sectional sofa by American Leather, the gray marble plinth coffee table, and the two gray armchairs with metallic frames. A trio of oversized turquoise ceramic vases and petrified-wood tables “lend a sense of rusticity,” Allen explains. An area rug anchors the seating group while also fading into the background. The only challenge in the redesign, says Allen, was finding statement art. “I browsed online a lot and finally found a painter in California who we commissioned for the artwork in the living room and sitting area.”

When the seasonal owners of this downtown Sarasota condo decided it was time for a whole-home makeover, they contacted Liliana Allen whose work they’d admired in a previous issue of Home & Design. The couple already had a particular vision that would transform their 2,800 square feet overlooking Sarasota Bay from modest to modern. “They bought their home eight years ago when the building was finished and they hadn’t changed anything whatsoever – not even the paint,” notes Allen, the co-founder of Oracle Design Group in Sarasota. “The interior was very basic and they wanted a full upgrade and a serene atmosphere.”

Left: Allen crafts an intimate sitting area for conversation with a quartet of chairs clustered around Oggetti’s Eden cocktail table with a glass top. Its base mixes shades of gray wood with gray faux shagreen pieces. Metals are more predominant here, appearing in the chairs’ splayed legs, in accents, and the frame of a console. The rug ties in the main hues with its abstract gray chevrons.

Above: “The glass table is very modern,” says Allen. Featuring glass panel legs and a glass top, a futuristic-looking chrome synchronized mechanism is used to extend and lift its surface. Glass and chrome repeat in accents and lighting: Schonbek’s cascading six-light pendant, and table settings featuring handmade Industria Vetraria Valdarnese clear glass dinner plates and chrome-decorated bowls from Malbi Décor. The flatware, also from Malbi Décor, is Linea Q stainless steel made by Sambonet, “the most important company in this field in Italy,” according to Maria Alberta Borri, proprietress of Malbi Décor.

Right: A dramatic white-on-white theme is on display in the kitchen. Cristallo quartzite countertops, and an arctic white 1-by-2-inch subway tile backsplash add bling to the flatpanel cabinetry. A cantilevered island top adds visual impact. Schonbek’s 16-light stainless steel and crystal Plaza pendant from LyteWorks in the tray ceiling, and the undulating white-lacquered, Italian-made, FontanaArte Serpentine fixture, also from LyteWorks, suspended above the island. Wolf stainless steel appliances from Mullet’s Appliances, a Native Trails Cucina single bowl Hammered Nickel undermount sink introduce glimmer. Aquabrass Wizard pull-down faucet, and Waterstone Hunley hot/cold filter faucet are from The Plumbing Place. Allen sourced Italian service wear from Malbi Design in Sarasota, including the gold leafshaped bowl from Tuscany’s Industria Vetraria Valdarnese. The glass ice bucket and glass bowl are hand-made by Massimo Lunardon. “All of his pieces are one-of-a-kind, lead-free, and dishwasher-safe, and can be used in the microwave,” says Alberta.

I didn’t want to overdo things,” Allen notes. The space is purposely devoid of window treatments. “They love the view – the city lights and the bay,” Allen says. “They’re here to get away from long winters and want to enjoy the sunshine.”

The knee brace corbels, Bahamian shutters, and colorful standing-seam metal roof give this single-level home a distinct island flare. The porte cochère helps to downplay the garage, an important requirement of the overall community design. “The goal is to drive through the neighborhood and have the main body of the houses featured rather than garage doors,” explains Keating. The front exterior is a flat concrete tile. The drive and walkway of brick pavers by Super Pavers create an elegant curve from the street to the double doors of the front entry.

A team approach to construction took on a whole new expansiveness for developer/builder Ken Keating of Camlin Custom Homes, when Pat and Peggy Ward decided to build a second home at The Inlets in Bradenton. “Pat Ward is a custom cabinetry maker and he wanted to be highly involved and put his expert touch on this home,” Keating says. “We call our philosophy Concierge Build because we work together with the client, the architect, and the interior designer and share our sources. One of the benefits of custom building is flexibility, which allowed us to utilize this homeowner’s unique skills.” Owner Ward crafted all of the exterior beams and corbels of Spanish red cedar in his Massachusetts mill. He also built all of the cabinetry throughout the residence. Keating worked side by side with residential designer Paul Fletcher of Design Lines to take full advantage of the homesite, its water views, and outdoor living opportunities. It was a challenging footprint because the irregularly shaped lot is wider than it is deep. “We designed a configuration that is not only cohesive with the neighborhood and surroundings, but takes full benefit of the setting,” Fletcher explains. “Together, we achieved a beautiful Island Colonial-style elevation and a home that works perfectly with the family’s lifestyle.”

Left: The focal point of the great room is a feature wall of custom cabinetry built by the homeowner. Coffers accent the 12-foot ceilings. A subtle color palette of neutral coastal tones is used throughout the home and is punctuated with various seaside blues seen here in accessory pillows and draperies fabricated by Beginning to End Interiors. Seating as many as nine people, the furniture grouping is a study in symmetry with two-tone skirted swivel chairs featuring a geometric pattern. They are balanced by a duo of distressed white spool chairs with watery blue cushions set in front of a natural fiber runner by Rugs as Art. The tufted linen cocktail ottoman features a drink tray that waterfalls over the cushion, offering an additional table surface. A pair of textured beige poufs is on casters, allowing them to be used as seating or as footrests.

The homeowners’ main focus was on the functionality and comfort of the 2,600 square foot, 3-bedroom, 3-bath house. Christiana Walker, associate designer with Studio G Home, worked closely with the Wards to create the coastal, yet traditional interiors, designed to remain timeless for years to come. “They gather their family here for vacations and holidays. They wanted a comfortable environment with open entertainment space and plenty of seating so everyone can lounge and enjoy the easy indoor-outdoor flow to the lanai and pool,” elaborates Walker. “With college-age children, the family wanted to make sure the space was durable, so we covered some chairs in Sunbrella fabric to protect from water and wear.” The result of this team effort is a welcoming gathering place rooted in stately British West Indies style, yet with all the comforts of modern functionality.

Above: The breakfast nook is a welcoming spot offering a serene view of the pool and lanai. Two-tone chairs used here bring a hint of the pool’s blue hues inside without overwhelming the space in color or detracting from the outdoor scene. The classic white kitchen is the home’s hub of activity, connecting the great room and breakfast nook. It serves as the anchor of the open living area with a large island that invites conversation. White stools by Bernhardt add to the clean, bright look. The contrasting dark legs keep them grounded with the Aztec tan acacia wood floor from the Nuvelle Bordeaux Collection. Bianco Romano granite countertops give the look of marble without the maintenance, while the marble backsplash tiles are Diana Royal. White accent vases and casual dishes are from Malbi Décor. The Wolf gas cooktop, Sharp microwave drawer, KitchenAid refrigerator, wall oven and dishwasher are all from Monark Premium Appliance’s Sarasota showroom.

Above: Double glass doors lead into the glowing setting of the master bath, awash in white and pale blue and softened with an area rug. The cabinetry, built by the owner, is topped with counters of low-maintenance Misty Carrera Caesarstone quartz. The sink and tub filler are polished chrome Mirabelle Vilamonte Collection from Ferguson Kitchen, Bath & Lighting Gallery, as is the Mirabelle Galatia Tub and Hinkley vanity light.

Left: “The master bedroom is designed to be a sophisticated retreat where the homeowners can relax after hosting guests,” explains designer Walker. “The color palette was established around the clients’ existing area rug, so we chose a champagne and soft sea green in the fabrics to complement the golds.” The bed is flanked by his and hers nightstands — his masculine with block feet and hers a more feminine oval with slender high legs. On the nightstands, gold and acrylic tripod lamps from International Design Source provide another layer of illumination. The tray ceiling detail adds architectural interest to the 12-foot ceilings. In the reading nook, matching skirted wing chairs are covered in a spa blue and gold fabric with a subtle sheen that reflects the sunshine. The beveled edge glass top of the side table provides a visual lightness to the nickel baluster base. Draperies were fabricated by Beginning to End Interiors.

Right: The design of the deep blue pool was a collaborative effort of the client, residential designer Fletcher, and pool contractor. The large travertine lanai encompasses a covered outdoor kitchen and screened swimming and lounging area. Just beyond the pool is the private dock where the family keeps their boat. “We used the lot configuration to create a natural flow. The entertaining space begins when you enter the home through the wide-open great room and kitchen, opening up to this great outdoor living area which leads right down to the pool deck and the mouth of the canal,” notes Fletcher.

Multiple roof lines, subtle arches, and a two-story entry tower accented with rough-cut stone, lend a soft Mediterranean architectural style to the Clara. The bronze of windows and the double French entry doors add a touch of the unexpected. The home also has a Spanish barrel-tiled roof, black lighting fixtures, and paver driveway and walkway.

CLARA MODEL CAPTURES SARASOTA’S STYLE HOME & DESIGN 2017 V1

London Bay Homes’ three-bedroom Clara model reflects the colors of sea, sand, and the tropical green palms of the nearby Gulf Coast. Situated at The Founders Club, the views throughout showcase the Sarasota country club’s legendary fairways. “People come to Florida seeking those two attractions – the Gulf and championship golf,” says Mark Wilson, president and CEO of London Bay Homes. “This home captures the spirit of both the Sarasota style with a bit of a contemporary feel, combined with the ambiance of the coast.” When creating home designs like the Clara, the architecture, build, and design team at award-winning London Bay Homes focuses on the experience of the house. “How residents live in the spaces, gather, and entertain, while balancing seclusion and quiet time for bedrooms and a study or home office,” explains Wilson. The Clara was designed with a popular open floor plan connecting family room with kitchen, then expanded with a formal living and dining room area for elegant entertaining. Walls of sliding glass opening to alfresco areas enhance the outdoor lifestyle. The Clara also features three full baths, a powder room and a study. It feels more like a private residence than a model, with its art, mixed metals, and wood tones.

Left: Tesoro 12-by-24-inch Earthen Essence Pearl tile from the Flooring Design Group installed in a running-board pattern and white-on-white walls, mouldings, and woodwork create a crisp canvas for subtle strokes of color in the living room, including solid gold in the rug and a trio of bold black, white and indigo paintings. Scott used white mouldings on the main wall to tame tall 14-foot ceilings and add visual interest. Beige furnishings keep the room simple, yet welcoming. Metallic and glass finishes add an elegant glimmer.

Above: Touches of gold are spun in small doses — on the surface of the dining room’s beamed ceiling and the embellished fleur-de-lis pattern of the blind which is matched with stripes of cheetah print. An oversized and deconstructed chandelier makes a dramatic statement above the oval table, circled by gray fabric chairs with padded arms. An adjoining butler’s pantry with a wine refrigerator is a convenient staging area for entertaining.

Right: Incorporating a peninsula table into an island “makes the best use of space in the kitchen,” explains Scott. It also makes sense. “The kitchen is where everyone tends to congregate, whether it’s family or guests,” he adds. The designer sweetens the seating assignments with comfortable neutraltoned chairs accented with nail-head trim. A study in contrasts, Scott pairs darker saddle-brown UltraCraft Cabinetry with light and white surfaces, including moonstone Pompeii quartz countertops, and a matte urban putty Rittenhouse House’s tile backsplash from The Flooring Design Group installed in a running board pattern. GE Monogram appliances from Ferguson Kitchen, Bath & Lighting Gallery include a dual fuel six-burner range, singleoven, and Advantium oven which functions as an oven, speed oven, and microwave. The stainless appliance finish and pendant above the island provide a complement to the room’s gray tones.

Michael Scott, a designer with Romanza Interior Design, introduced transitional design elements and a color scheme that provide cohesiveness throughout the model’s 3,248-square-feet, still breathing individuality into each space. Soft grays and beiges in flooring and furnishings, and walls painted Sherwin Williams’ Aesthetic White lend neutral backdrops for accent colors that echo the greens of tropical foliage, ocean blues, and beach sand, some in wispy watercolor hues; others reaching full vivid saturation.

Above: Animal print on an oversized chair and ottoman, introduces a wild side to the study which has an Oxford oak wood floor. The charcoal gray painted ceiling contrasted with crisp white beams. Scott says the diagonal positioning of chair and ottoman against the aqua area rug “adds instant visual interest. It’s a design element that makes an impact on the eye.”

Left: The painterly floral fabric for the window treatments and pillows in the family room were Scott’s inspiration for the entire home. Muted in other rooms, the palette hits a crescendo here in saturated tones of aqua and tropical green. “You want bright, happy colors in rooms where you’ll spend a lot of time,” notes the designer who referenced tropical with a woven Hickory White armchair. “We’ve lived in the darkness of Old World design for too long. Florida is sunny and filled with beautiful vibrant colors.” The room’s beige sofa and area rug ground the colors, while providing a spectral continuum with the adjoining kitchen.

HOME & DESIGN 2017 V1

Above: “Tone-on-tone finishes create a soothing and serene mood in the master bath,” says Scott. “Unless a client specifies otherwise, I like to keep the bathroom within the same family of colors and textures,” he says. “It’s more relaxing on the eye, and ultimately the mind. More people want that spa-like experience at home.” Scott continues the porcelain tile used elsewhere in the home into the bathroom because of its resemblance to marble, but opts for large format 18-by-18-inch squares over the rectangles of the main flooring. The tile floor, shower walls, bath surface, and backsplash complement the stone-finished floating cabinetry and Autumn quartz countertops.

Right: London Bay Homes masters the master suite. A large bedroom overlooking the pool, features dual walk-in closets and a spa-like bathroom. “It’s a retreat and we treat it as such,” says Wilson. In the Clara, Scott departs from the model’s main colors to interject golds, grays, and coppers with the aquas and greens appearing in the bed-spanning bolster and matching bench. The dark wood tones of the dresser and bed mix with neutral-finished nightstands with a nod to mid-century modern design. Always mindful of the smallest details, London Bay and Romanza selected a ceiling fan with a brushed steel finish, which is repeated in the container of a potted plant. Completing the look are the blue-gray ceiling and a mirror framed by overlapping bronze circles.

Left: “The outdoor area speaks to how people envision living in Florida,” says Wilson. “During our 26 years building luxury homes in Southwest Florida, we’ve seen these spaces get larger and more multifunctional. People spend most of their time outside. They entertain outside, they dine outside, they begin the day with coffee and the newspaper outside.” London Bay Homes enhances the alfresco areas with a fully equipped summer kitchen, covered seating, and dining. The freeform pool and raised circular spa both feature mosaic slate Waterline tile in coastal Azul.

Luxury homebuilder and developer WCI created the spacious 2,999-square-foot, three-bedroom, fourbath Pinehurst model to appeal to active adults who like to entertain and host out-of-town guests. The residence includes the most sought-after aspects of homes built under the purview of WCI. “From the moment you walk in, we wanted the home to have that incredible wow factor with the big foyer and open concept,” explains Vicky Ward, WCI regional director of sales. “WCI was trying to make this a great place for entertaining—a gathering place for family.” Perched on 1,300 acres of an Audubon Certified Signature Sanctuary, this Indigo Lakes model home is just a short drive from shopping, dining and culture Sarasota has to offer. Fringed by sugar sand beaches, Indigo Lakes’ swaying grasses and wetlands create a naturescape for this planned community, where old elegance meets modern sophistication.

Left: Vicky Ward explains variety is the key to curb appeal in this planned community. “We don’t allow two houses to be next door to each other in same color or elevation.” Two-tone stucco and a medallion on this one-story Spanish Mediterranean-style home lends curb appeal. Pavers lead to a two car side-load garage with doors by D & D Garage Doors, providing discreet privacy for that less-than-perfectly coiled hose or occasionally full recycling can. The landscaping is low-maintenance, wetlands approved, and native Florida flora, with easyto-maintain hardscapes and Floratam grass.

Jacqueline Cantwell, a registered interior designer for Robb & Stucky Design crafted the interiors of this model home using furnishings from Robb & Stucky. “I love the organic feel of the landscaping with the ornamental grasses,” she says. “That’s what I tried to bring out in the furnishings.” Cantwell refers to many elements of the home as classic modern. “It’s a classical design in modern colors,” she says. Cantwell relied on organic, natural fibers, and honey tones to warm the home’s modern gray palette. “Gray is the new neutral but I wanted it to be warm and inviting. That’s why I used all those honey tones in the materials.” The home does indeed present that wow factor to which Ward refers. Entering by a grand foyer, you immediately notice the knotty golden sheen of the mango wood entry table, dressed with a substantial glass and silver-leaf, wrought-iron chandelier. Cantwell selected the chandelier, along with every element of the home’s interior design. She went modern with much of the lighting. “Contemporary lighting is a good way to update,” she explains. “Even a room that is fairly traditional can pop with lighting. The impact of mixing modern lighting with traditional pieces provides flexibility for the (prospective) owners, allowing them to envision their furnishings in a home.”

Right: “The house is actually simple,” says designer Cantwell. “No tray ceilings in the living area. No heavy adornments. I wanted to give it a fresh feel.” She captures both a natural beauty and sophisticated elegance in the home by translating classical designs into modern colors imbued with organic and inorganic elements. “I do like organic, natural fibers. I modernize with the fabrics in the two occasional chairs with patterns similar to Missoni design zigzag.” In the main living area, an iron square-framed, glass cocktail table with a pewter finish perches on the traditional soft swirl patterns of a wool rug in modern grays and golds. A structured, natural grace permeates the main living area.

Above: The complement of geometric patterns and deep organic textures in the home’s transitional style maintains a natural formality and is classically current. Organic and inorganic elements flow from room to room. A glass-topped 72-inch dining table with a round metal fretwork base by Bernhardt softens against a backdrop of blonde sycamore maple wood in the sideboard. “Picture-framed grass cloth panels flank the entertainment center and carry into the dining room,” says Cantwell. “The grass cloth adds texture and restates the organic look.” The ceiling-to-floor colorblock draperies in the dining room, and geometric drapery panels framing the sliders open up the space and provide a natural transition to the lush backdrop of ornamental grasses in the natural landscape. Left: “This model home features the most popular selection in WCI community homes. Buyers tend to choose a stainless steel finish on appliances, set in a gourmet kitchen with quartz countertops and dark cabinets,” Ward explains. The open floor plan facilitates a natural flow from one room to the next, while still allowing for a formal dining room just off the foyer, convenient to the kitchen. Cantwell continues this approach by creating an accessible, friendly timbre in each room. “Roman shades in a playful Kravet fabric surround the breakfast area making morning dining a delight,” she adds. Dark kitchen cabinets are set against light-reflecting, iciclecolored glass accents in the kitchen backsplash.

HOME & DESIGN 2017 V1

Cantwell balances out the contemporary by incorporating classic elements designed to withstand the test of time. The balance introduces the design concept of contrasts found throughout the home. Gentle organic textures are juxtaposed with rigid mineral mediums and fabrics.

Above: Natural light floods the bathroom and the spacious walk-in closet suite, complete with ventilated wood shelving. Rectangular offset designer ceramic tiles in the master bath continue themes of tone-on-tone gray. The glass shower enclosure set against a soft gray tile canvas creates openness in the bathroom. A separate water closet provides just the right amount of privacy. Engineered marble undermount sinks on 36-inch wide vanity cabinets flank the deep soaking tub, comfortably delineating a casual yours and mine space.

Right: Geometric designs set off by warm organics and solid mediums weave throughout the master bedroom’s design accents and furniture. The tray ceiling gives the room a more dramatic aesthetic, providing a greater sense of height. To the back of the residence, the owner’s suite looks out to the nature preserve, which sits just beyond the landscaped yard.

Above: A floor-to-ceiling curtain hangs in one of the en suite guest bathrooms. “It creates drama and makes more of a statement than a regular shower curtain, explains Cantwell. Brushed pewter Moen faucets in the guest bathroom bring out grays in the muted tile shades and complement the Schlage door hardware in satin nickel finish. Sherwin-Williams Lemon Chiffon paint warms and relaxes the room. Contemporary leaf artwork supports textured, organic themes.

Right: Geometric patterns, and texture contrasts continue to play out in the cheerful guest bedrooms. Both benefit from unencumbered views on this corner parcel. A three-dimensional wooden honeycomb pattern in the headboard, and loose-knit gray throw provide organic textures. A polished yellow lamp base lends a flexible modern air. The color scheme also reflects a gentle exchange between mediums. Neutral shades of gray lend a contemporary flair with yellow accents. In all bedrooms, gray carpet replaces the tile flooring used in the main living areas.

Left: Chaise lounges and casual dining furniture set a sit and relax tone for the screened-in patio and pool lanai. Cantwell avoids formality in the lanai, opting for pieces which create intimacy. “I used a small conversation cocktail table instead of a dining table with four chairs around it, she says. The sanctuary opens up just beyond the enclosed lanai and irrigated, landscaped yard. Many of the 1,584 homes in the 2,400-acre community overlook both rolling fairways and the nature preserve.
