b. Welcome Senior Director of Campus Rec, Pat Montagano!
i. Director Montagno: I know you all have questions, but I want to take care of a few things. One, I will bring you a few visual things that you can see. Two, thank you for all you do. I have been at the university for a while. This May will be 39 years. I love the work, I am passionate about the world of fitness and exercise. I have the best job in the world and I am so fortunate. Off of my meeting with Ronit, he asked if we could get a decline bench in the fitness center. I will be transparent, there is no room in that area where we have weights. People have asked for more popular machines like the thrust machine and the squat machine and bars we are getting. He also gave the idea of bringing up the sign that has a QR code and we note damaged equipment. If you scan it, you can report any damaged equipment and can make repairs more efficient. We put some signs, some in the weight room and some on the second floor. I did get 10 people so far to respond and it's really helpful information. It was an idea that came out of Ronit’s committee and we implemented it and gained great feedback from students. I like to have systems in place that are easy, nothing that is complicated or long-winded. People are taking time to submit what we need and that is kudos to Facilities and Operations. I was thinking similar to what Ronit had mentioned to us, to get a virtual feedback form and put it right at the entrance asking students about their
experience at the gym. You can mention staffing, equipment, group exercise classes, and cleanliness. This is a valuable tool for me because everyone wants feedback. I am open to hearing what students want. My job is to make the fitness center what students want it to be. Of course, there are limitations in terms of resources and we can talk about those. I want your experience to be greater and your experience to be healthier. I welcome you all to come to the fitness center and my office which is room 206. I want to program with SGA and want to hear what you have to say.
1. Senator Finkelstein: The mascot applications, when are those being sent out for this year?
a. Director Montagno: Yup, we just received 14 mascot applications and we are going to have a little tryout like last semester, putting you through different dances and movements and trying to see how the students are in terms of enthusiasm and know their limits. There are criteria to being a mascot. You cannot talk. You have a responsibility not to reveal your identity. In the past, people have tried to take off the head and you can’t do that. What we did in May was to have a reveal commencement. It is a paid commitment. It’s a lot of work but it is fun.
2. Chair Ahmad: Thanks for coming. Obviously, the fitness center offers a lot of support in terms of helping students get in the gym, but in terms of nutrition, how do they help students transition from college life to post-college life?
a. Director Montagno: I have worked with the career center in the past and we have tried to transition students once they graduate from college. We have run programs in the past but so many changes happen, things get lost. During orientation when students come onto campus, when we can certainly do more than what we do now. The biggest thing with exercise is time commitment. You have to make time in your schedule for exercise. When life gets very busy you have to learn to fit it in.
3. Senator Yari: Thanks for coming. I have to go to the gym twice a week for Physical Therapy with Parkinsons class. I want to ask about it. Our equipment such as deflated balls, what is the system for making sure that the equipment for the classes to be upkept. Is it up to the professor or student? Also are there any other programs like this class that are going to be offered in the future?
a. Director Montagno: I love that class. My mom passed with COVID and she has Parkinsons and when they asked to bring that class to fitness all they had to say was parkinsons and I said let’s do it. So, that class has specific equipment some of which I purchased and some which the program purchases. Todd and Rebecca have a section of
that closet and I try to help them out. They are responsible for it and keep it in a lock box. People go in the closets a lot and I don’t want people going in it and things get lost. Second question, I am open to new classes. A big change that is happening this semester is physical education classes are being removed from the PEB. The classes are overflowing into the fitness center. This brings students who don’t know about the fitness center into the fitness center, especially during the day and early morning. You may have to wait 5 mins for a machine. I have worked it out with folks in PE that I am fine with students using the building for PE. I am not closing down the building because it’s a student building and so I share it.
4. Senator Pierre: Are there any methods in mind to advertise the fitness center to commuter students? Some do not know how to start with the fitness center or know of its resources.
a. Director Montagno: Promotions or communication is the biggest thing. We can have all the programs in the world but unless we get the word out and people come to them it’s a bummer. All our promotions are for all students. They just don’t apply to one group. We do a lot of promo in residents halls to get a lot of students to come. For commuters, I work with Anita a lot and we make a lot of programs so I can meet with commuter students. I am open to ideas and any collaboration to keep advertising aspects of university that people don’t know.
5. Chair Orellana: A lot of what I have heard from some students is that they are scared to go to the fitness center, so what would you say to students who are afraid to go to the fitness center and are afraid of being judged?
a. Director Montagno: Don’t be afraid. Back in 2020 when COVID happened, there were predominantly men and no women in the fitness center. We changed the room around so there is more functional training and putting turf and we switched the north end of the gym to make it more attractive for students with crossfit etc. We wanted a lot more women in the room. I have honestly not heard anyone say the gym is intimidating. The second floor was designed to be less intimidating for women and men. If you enjoy not being where the dumbbells are, go to the second floor. I am happy to give people a tour. Since there are so many changes in PEB building, I got a lot of dumbbells and other stuff on the second floor that people can use. Send them to me if they are scared. Everyone deserves to be healthy.
6. Senator Chauhan: It is very important for us to have sanitary products in women’s locker rooms. Could this be worked on?
a. Director Montagno: I never say never. We used to have them and I don’t know why the university did away with them. Ronit, if you want to work with me on this let’s do it.
7. Senator Bruso: The club sports council, will this come back this semester? Members last year discussed it early in the semester.
a. Director Montagno: The club support council has great potential but students don’t want to make the time. Club sports has gone through a major overhaul since January of 2025 when we took over the campus sport budget and club sports is a lot of work. The council has so much potential but unless we have enthusiastic students that want to liaison between the club and our office, we have to get things done. I am not opposed to always trying to get it going but I am not into begging people to fill positions to fill positions.
8. Chair Yepez: With so many classes and club sports utilizing the fitness center, is there a system when students see that these spaces are booked when they can utilize certain spaces in the fitness center in the event that they want to do something like play basketball?
a. Director Montagno: We do have this system. We just got smart TVs and we put the schedule up there. It is good but is subject to change. Today the D1 basketball team asked to come in. The schedule is tight and regimented because so many groups want prime time. There are facilitates in place now to get as many groups in as possible. There is a sheet with the schedule with the big events but this often changes.
9. Senator Green: A lot of students are feeling afraid to go to the gym, but in general what do they usually clean at the gym in terms of equipment and how is time made to keep it clean?
a. Director Montagno: One of the things I am most proud of is the fitness center can have so many people and it does not smell like a gym. It smells pretty clean. The staff comes in and tries to cover as much in a day. He decides what is being done whether it is power washing the walls or sanitizing the locker rooms. It takes a lot to clean the glass. If you come into the gym at 6am when the custodian leaves it’s clean and I want the same when people come at 6pm. I leave it to my staff and I have standards for keeping the place clean. We try to keep it as clean as we can.
10. Senator Pierre: I was a member of the pep band, I noticed that it tended to be events where people would not show up and
occasions where people had more visiting fans than Hofstra fans? How can we better support the home teams and show spirit?
a. Director Montagno: Unfortunately I don’t have the answers to everything but I can tell you that I have always been working with athletics to get more spirit on campus. I think Roll with RHA is the coolest event we run along with RHA. We get 30 people tops. My vision is we should have hundreds of students and run till midnight. I don;t know how to recruit more people. The pep band, this is your year to shine and make amazing music. All the spirit groups are trying to make more spirit on campus. It is on all of us to get students involved and engaged. Play with Pride is a point system and teams get gifts. We are trying to do as much as we can do to generate more spirit on campus.
11. Senator Finkelstein: The program with giving out points, can this be extended to student populations? Something like getting merch if you go to a given amount of games?
a. Director Montagno: I think OSLE has worked on that. They had the stamp program. I think if you got stamps for a certain amount of things you get rewarded. If we work with big groups of students we could expand on this. Never say never.
12. Senator Yari: I know we have a nutritionist on campus for students’ dietary needs, but do we have this for the gym but for people who have disabilities or do not know where to start who offer workout plans/regimines?
a. Director Montagno: I am a certified personal trainer and I take a lot of time meeting with students to initiate them into the fitness center, working on their food, and helping them workout. I give them a program, show them the different machines. I can’t train everyone but I am in the fitness center and I can help monitor progress. I do collabs and want students to come to the fitness center.
13. Senator Araba: I have never been to the gym before Hofstra and I liked the descriptions of how to use the machines. How would you encourage more people to exercise outside of the gym?. You need a good diet, so how are you going to encourage students to take a diet that fits their needs?
a. Director Montagno: We do have intramural sports and these are played all over campus. We have yoga programs that we host on the south side of campus. My thing with programming is I want to do as much in the fitness center because I want people to come in the fitness center and it sells itself. As for nutrition, I work with food services and wellness on campus and we do try to get as much reach on
campus. Students have to be accountable. If you want to learn where to work out on campus, you have to ask and you have to take initiative. When I was working in swimming, a student for years never knew we had a swimming center. The point is, I will do as much as I can do but students also have to want to find out about things too.
14. Senator Malayeri: I love the fitness center, but I have an idea: I hear a lot of people are intimidated going there. Could you implement a map of the fitness center so everyone knows where the machines are? I go weekly and sometimes I struggle to find where each machine is.
a. Director Montagno: Okay, valid point. That is something I will definitely figure out and think about how we can make it happen. Kate’s corner is Kate’s grad assistant working in the fitness center on our instagram. We did a spotlight last week talking about triceps and back exercises, showing students. There is also a barcode on every machine and it tells students what the machine is, what body part it works and how they should use it. If you want to help me help others, let me know.
15. Senator Vazquez: I heard a lot of people who want a boxing bag for cardio which I have not seen, I would also like it. There was also a boxing club that got shut down that I heard of, do you know of this?
a. Director Montagno: There was never a boxing club. Clubs are all student driven and it’s dependent on student leadership if they want to keep clubs going. Crew was a student club that was successful and helped the fitness center. The leadership was successful and sustained many years. However, it was very expensive and membership decreased over the years. I did not want to shut it down but I did not want to be paying all these facility fees for shelves. The boxing thing, I had a boxing bag. I need 3 feet circumference and I don’t have that to place the bag on a solid beam. The 3 feet is the problem and the only place is where the beam is in the middle but there is not even space. I have to think about safety. We have a punching bag on the wall. It is not ideal but you know, space.
16. Senator Subramanian: There are barcodes on the machines and pictures of what to stretch for each machine, but could you implement more resources discussing what to stretch during each stage of a workout?
a. Director Montagno: Two things. 1. The stretching machine on the second floor with the diagrams is by far my
favourite machine in the building. It is one of the oldest but it has good information. 2. We could look at other students’ workout. I have stretching sheets and I could give you those. Also, in today’s world of technology, there are websites for stretching exercises.
17. Chair Malhotra: Planet Fitness has stretching guides taped on machines itself. Could we get guides for each machine in that manner?
a. Director Montagno: Take a picture of that and we’ll talk. I want to do whatever is going to make it easier. I can’t stop students from being intimidated but I am willing to talk. I want all the stigmas of a gym to be gone. You can get an ample workout in 45-60 minutes, you do not have to be there for 2 hours. We have cardio, dumbbell equipment, weights, and machines. We can expand, but we need to think of the available resources. The multicourt now has dividers. I don’t want to work on any project unless it’s well thought out.
18. Senator Rades: Are you the only certified personal trainer on campus? If there is a way we could spread awareness about that so people can make their own personalized exercise plans. People newer to the fitness center would know where to start?
a. Director Montagno: No, I am not. Katie Sill runs the physiology lab, the PEB, the dome building. If I know a student that needs a trainer, I refer that trainer to Katie and she assigns a free trainer for 10 sessions. We could definitely do that. That is my favorite part. I like to sit with students and faculty that have fitness goals and need a little push to get where they need to be. We can get informational cards on how to do a beginner program. I have students that I want to add to the fitness center.
19. Chair Ahmad: Is there any talk about extending hours to the multisport court? Are there any maintenance of the pull-up bars on the multi-sport court?
a. Director Montagno: Tomorrow morning I will check that out. Today the rules that are going to be posted by the multicourt got back from legal. I didn’t want to put the times cause that will fluctuate over summer etc. For now it will be 9am-9pm Monday - Sunday. We can’t have people playing music etc. late at night. If the hours need to be changed we will change them. We were getting a lot of people from the community using those courts but when they monopolize and damage the court, that becomes an expense. There’s so much money that goes into everything and everyone needs to be respectful so we can keep things.
In the past there was a system with the physical ID’s and returning basketballs and now there is an online system. Since last year, we don’t collect IDs at the gym. So much equipment is gone. We were trying to be friendly but people were stealing equipment. People weren’t respecting the equipment as they should so this was moved for more accountability and students are less inclined to damage the equipment. There are rules in the fitness center. A student was constantly clogging the toilets with toilet paper so these were replaced with the air dryers. Students would run around with weights and then these would be found during room checks. Swiping in the fitness center is important because we need to know where students are and you add to the data of the fitness center. You help with reports. Numbers help generate bigger projects. When the fitness center was first built it was the recreation center, and that building had no air conditioning.
20. VP Young: There are machines on the 13th floor of Estabrook. Are there plans to put those machines in other buildings?
a. Director Montagno: On the multi-court there used to be a resident hall and there were plans to make one of the floors a gym. There is lots involved and it’s a big expense. The university ruled against it. They then put cardio machines in the grad building and on the 13th floor of Estabrook years later. I am not comfortable having a weight floor in any of the buildings unless there is supervision. This also takes away from the fitness center which is a community. You can get involved and play sports here, be involved in spirit and clubs. I don’t think we need to build weight areas in other areas of campus because we have the fitness center. But I do support anything and I do love you guys.
21. Senator Green: Does the fitness center offer zumba?
a. Director Montagno: No, we refocused that towards pilates and HIIT classes. I want to have spin classes because it is a great workout and we have a spin room. AAI certifies students to be instructors via a one-day class on August 11th. I got 5 certified instructors on campus which is why we offer more spin classes per semester. We can get pilates or zumba if it comes back and certify students to be instructors. You get $25/hour, more than any job on this campus. We are bringing someone in January to do the pilates certification class. It is an 8 hour class.
