Meeting Called to order at 6:46 EST

A. Quorum Call

a. Quorum set to 34

B. New Business

a. Chair Iacobovici moves to open the gallery

i. Motion Seconded

ii. Motion Passed

b. Welcome - Director for Community Engagement, Special Projects, and Campus Transportation, Jovanni Ortiz.

i. Jovanni: I recently celebrated 4 years here. I work closely with Gerry Hart. I was in SGA in college. Any students who want to connect or meet with Mack can come to my office.

ii. Chair Iacobovici: As an RA, I have had instances with myself and residents where P-Safe has been standoffish and rude. Why does it seem P-Safe officers answering phones are like this? I understand that staff may be low, but freshmen who are greeted rudely may feel awkward.

1. Jovanni: I am sorry to hear that is the experience because that’s not how we train our staff to be. It is important to me that they face students with a smile. We will continue to train them. Behind the desk, there are usually lots of traffic coming and they may be abrupt but we don’t want that to ever come across as rough. If you have some unpleasant experience, let us know and we can address it.

iii. Senator Pierre: I wanted to know what projects you had in mind for students?

1. Jovanni: We have so many projects in mind. Gerry wanted to build community engagement and keep campus safe. That has to be done with communication and students being willing to come to talk to public safety. We started with SGA, other student groups to hear from them and their thoughts about public safety. It was like a listening tour for students. We also added open hours with Gerry or myself, and we increased events like training, car-care. Any time a student group invites us we try to go to connect with students. We got Mack, our community service dog. That was a 2 year process involving where to get the dog and funding. This helped us bridge the gap between public safety and the student body. We are always willing to hear from students. We have an idea coming up to implement a video game night for public safety and students. You can give suggestions and if we can make it happen we will.

iv. Chair Ahmad: I want to know about the ticketing process. What happens to those who do not pay tickets. I know P-Safe officers now wear regular attire at student advocacy protests. What are future plans in P-Safe’s relations with these groups?

1. Jovanni: We are there to protect you and let vigils go safely. The overall goal is to make everyone safe even though we may appear scary. We try to attend with plain clothes. The older uniforms were more police-like and we wanted them to be warmer. Public speech is important and we want to continue to encourage that. We are continuing to go through processes and making sure all boxes are checked. We did increase tickets this year due to the new parking rules. We stopped letting residential students park on the academic side of campus. We had a number of officers in the parking lot warning students and we also added signs. We gave out a lot of tickets, some for students not having a permit. The policy is changing slightly. We cannot and do not want to hold your diploma. It is important that tickets are enforced. These are tracked and will come up when it’s time for you to graduate. I have noticed students paying their tickets more this semester or appealing their tickets.

v. Senator Finkelstein: Are there any updates for signs to be displayed on the shuttles?

1. Jovanni: We have our train shuttles, night shuttles, and the shopping shuttle. We did buy signs for our pride ride shuttle that

takes students from C-Square to the student center. We got a lot of feedback that students are using it and because of the weather, they may be more inclined to use it. I don’t know if those signs for every shuttle would make sense because we are frequently changing shuttles. I am open to it but we just need a better way for it to work.

vi. Senator Ehrlich: Do you see a foreseeable future for using the signs? I proposed it in the summer and have been working on it with CSA.

1. Jovanni: There are different staff for different shuttles to avoid confusion. That only picks up at public safety. The hempstead shuttle stops at different stops on campus. This is to make sure it doesn’t get confusing. There is definitely a possibility in the future and spring might be a good time to tie that in.

vii. Senator Chacon: I use the Hempstead shuttle every day. Why does it not run at 7:00pm hour and why does it run later at the 8:00pm hour? What are the future plans regarding this manner? Also, I have noticed that air conditioners have not been working in the shuttles?

1. Jovanni: We have two drivers during the day and in the night we have 1 and we still have to give breaks. We don’t have a Mineola shuttle from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. We try to make sure our shuttles are working at the peak times. We are looking at staffing changes. In terms of the AC, we put in a work order for facilities to look at it. We always try to fix those quickly.

viii. Senator Smook: You mentioned shooting tranings. With the recent mass shootings, what kind of safeguards are you taking and what kind of precautions are you taking to address it?

1. Jovanni: It’s something we have to prepare for but no one wants to talk about. It is a top priority for public safety and senior administration. We had training with local police partners and we did a simulation of a shooting situation. It was a thorough training. On a weekly basis, our officers go to an intelligence meeting and they sit and talk about threats. That information is helpful because if it is happening at a local school, we have to prepare if it happens on our campus. We incorporate plans so that we are prepared.

ix. Chair Orellana: Previously after 10pm when the gates closed there were two gates opened: One from California Ave and the one from the Netherlands. Are there going to be changes to which gates remain open?

1. Jovanni: The Oak street gate has been closed. There was a lot less traffic. During halloween and fall fest we had it open. However, we do close it when there is reduced traffic. It is not going to be

permanently closed and it will be open when there is high levels of traffic.

x. Senator Vira: I see a lot of student public safety officers. What are their roles?

1. Jovanni: We do have student public safety hours and they wear blue shirts. They don’t respond in emergencies. They patrol buildings and parking lots and work a lot of events. They help walk Mack. We hire for that every year so if you are interested let us know. We usually have a team of 15-20.

xi. Senator Araba: I received an email saying there will be shuttles for Thanksgiving to go to JFK. Will this be the case for Christmas and other holidays? Also, how to handle students waiting in bad weather for shuttles?

1. Jovanni: With regards to weather, we work closely with facilities. They get cleaned at 2 am to make sure the weather isn’t affecting shuttles. Sometimes they are delayed but we have never cancelled shuttles. Sometimes we spend public safety hours when they are running extra behind. The best thing you can do is call the public safety desk. Every year we offer a complimentary shuttle to JFK. This year we are offering at 7, 12 and 3 pm. We got a lot of requests this year. We have not yet extended this to other holidays but if there is a great demand we may be open to expanding it.

xii. Chair Iacobovici: I attended an event where you were giving out stickers of an AI version of Mack. It seems moot to do that given how the student population feels about AI. Respectfully, it does not look like Mack and seems like an easy way to get merch out. What about a drawing or a picture?

1. Jovanni: It was based on an actual picture of Mack. It is essentially a cartoon version. We put the public safety number to get students to reach out. I appreciate your feedback.

xiii. Senator Finkelstein: Can anyone become a student safety officer?

1. Jovanni: Anyone. Before it was FWS but now any student, including international students do.

xiv. Senator Vazquez: I see on the public safety page you can track the shuttle but it never seems to work. Last year I had an incident where the shuttle was an hour late.

1. Jovanni: We have had some issues with providers of the tracker. We are working on it. Never hesitate to call the desk so they can reach out to the driver and get to you.

xv. Senator Chacon: How often does the lost and found get stuff and what do you do with the stuff that is never recovered?

1. Jovani: We get stuff daily. Daily people also come and get their stuff, but some people leave it. Some things like jewellery are kept in a safe. After a year, if things are not collected, we may discard them. The lost and found is in the public safety building near California street.

xvi. Senator Rades: Will the shuttle ever be expanded to LaGuardia? When it comes to issues with tracking, I know with the night shuttle students will call it and never get a specific estimate of an actual time? Students typically have to wait a long time in bad weather.

1. Jovanni: It takes longer because Laguardia is further in proximity. We would need to get two shuttles. But if a lot of students want it we can work on it. I know that. During the weekend we get so many calls it’s hard to anticipate how long it will take. The tracker at some point will be most feasible and accurate.

xvii. Senator Ehrlich: Sometimes the trains get delayed. Sometimes I ask the driver if they can stay a few minutes if the train is running late. However, sometimes drivers leave a minute before the regular time or do not wait. There seems to be a lack of communication between P-Safe and students?

1. Jovanni: We don’t have control over MTA or LIRR. Multiple trains will come in and we will ask them to wait but if students want to leave and they think everyone arrived, then there is nothing we can do. I can’t guarantee that. If you ever feel like information is being transmitted, just reach out to me.

xviii. Senator Pierre: In terms of people of color with public safety, I have not had the best relationship with P-Safe? What does training look like and how can you better publicize that P-Safe is getting trained?

1. Jovanni: That is a priority for us. We have annual training and we typically host it in January. It involves in-depth speakers to educate officers on how they can better interact with students. We do scenario training and it helps to hear from experts in those fields and also staff. Gerry saw the reform for the police department and she has a lot of experience with that. She would never want any student to feel unsafe.

xix. Chair Ahmad: I do not know if you know about this, but President Poser has proposed building a college town. Would P-Safe be in charge of the college town or county police?

1. Jovanni: Public safety will still be there once its campus. We work closely with our police partners. We would still partner with them but public safety would be the primary representative.

xx. Senator Araba: What are your plans to increase the frequency of the shuttle? Maybe to every 30 minutes?

1. Jovanni: Because of the increase of commuter students, we have noticed the need for an increased frequency in shuttles. It is going to require more drivers.

xxi. Senator Chauhan: I notice there is a big gap in the timing of the shopping shuttles on Sundays. I feel as if it would make sense to push the late shuttles to an hour earlier given that most places are closed by the time the last shuttles come Sunday?

1. Jovanni: It is supposed to be every hour. Let me look into that because it should be running more frequently than that. It used to only be weekends but now it is Wednesday. There is potential for that to change as well.

c. 10 minute recess

d. Senator Presentations!

i. Keep it at a maximum of 5 minutes and write questions in the discussion board.

ii. Wheel of Names

iii. Discussion

iv. Voting

v. QR CODES

1. Senator Harish Subramanian

a. Senator Subramanian: It is the same idea that my group presented last year with a few changes. It is a healthcare initiative by placing life-saving care in areas around campus. It lessens the chance of serious injury. AED defibrillators in the event of a cardiac arrest can restore normal heart rhythm. This is helpful because immediate response can help save lives. This can promote a culture of safety in residential buildings and the student center. Currently none on the academic side. Public safety would conduct an assessment to see where they are needed.

b. Funding could come by grants and alumni sponsorship. AEDs cost from 200-2500 and last 2-5 years.

2. Senator Mansour

a. Senator Mansour: This is my wifi enhancement project. Students complain about unreliable wifi service. There are

specific locations where wifi is particularly slow, especially in high traffic areas. I want to strengthen current wifi and make it available everywhere. The cost would be less than $2000. I will collaborate with IT to identify faulty access points, and launch a wifi experience survey. I will use results to improve wifi.

3. Senator Finkelstein

a. Senator Finkelstein: Jewish housing on campus that would give Jewish students space to observe religion in safer space. Shabbat-friendly dorming, kosher dining options in C-Square. Would take about $1700 per semester for shabbat-friendly housing. Rabbi dave brought up issues and Jewish students that needed to be let in during night and day put on RSR list.

4. Senator Vazquez, Senator Black, Senator Bruso

a. Senators Black, Bruso, and Vazquez: Our project is digitizing the PPAW. The TVs in and outside the lounge don’t work. We will partner with the Office of Intercultural Engagement and Inclusion. We would like to use the outside TV for a digitized cabinet whiteboard and for promoting SGA events. The second TV would be used for promoting IEI events. The third TV would be used for us in SGA to schedule the conference room and for committee and other use. The total would be around $750. We plan to contact ITS and connect with the necessary people.

5. Senator Watt, Senator Noel

a. Senators Noel and Watt: Our project is a student engagement system called pride points. Invoke students to show up at programs. Goes toward improving the environment and making events better. OSLE is developing it and we would collaborate. SGA would partially fund prizes, marketing, events. OSLE would provide technical setup and have access to analytics. Students would sign up on GIHU and participate. It could be around $2300, mainly for rewards via earning points. Benefits students and clubs via engagement and attendance. This could be launched at the beginning of next semester and have mid-semester incentive boosts.

6. Senator Apostol

a. Senator Apostol: My project is senior sunset. This is a sendoff event for seniors. I envision this as a spring picnic or fair. Possible collaborations include empowerher, live music and a photo booth etc. The total estimated cost is $4,100. Marketing ideas would include flyers and social media. St. John’s has senior spirit week.

7. Senator Vira, Senator Gillani, Senator Ehrlich, Senator Araba, Senator Aguilar

a. Senators Vira, Ehrlich, Gillani, Aguilar, and Araba: Our project is a library charger borrowing program. Suffolk County Community College has this. Students struggle with low batteries and this is a popular request. The library dean is ready to implement this if approved. We envision that this could start at the beginning of next semester. Chargers would be catalogued at the desk by device, student ID required and student is liable for damage. The estimated budget is $908.50 and USB-C bricks are the best for fast charging. We would also purchase lightning cables, mini-USB cables, and wire organizers. The library dean and vice dean are aware of this plan and are all for it.

8. Senator Chauhan, Senator Thani, Senator Bokhari

a. Senators Chauhan, Thani, and Bokhari: Our project is dining dollars in the fitness center. We aim to add drinks and snack bars at the check-in station using dining dollars. We would send out a google form regarding student preferences. We would work with compass dining and campus rec to set up the dining dollar integration system. We would then purchase the kiosk and test out the system and then ask for feedback. The total is about $4500, but it is supposed to pay itself off over time. The monthly cost would be around $2680. We would collaborate with compass, campus rec, and SGA. This would benefit everyone. Campus Rec’s biggest concern is profitability.

9. Senator Urban

a. Senator Urban: My project is Hofstra formal, making student formal attire more available on campus. This would mean a formal clothing store on campus. This would benefit commuters, low income students and for last minute events. The career boutique is only open Monday to Wednesday during common hour and you need to reserve

it. Over 150 students went to the boutique this semester. Goals include financial support or clothing drive. A more long term goal is the college town boutique.

10. Senator Rubio-Chacon

a. Senator Chacon: My project is a landscape fountain in front of HofUSA. It is aesthetically pleasing and creates a sense of belonging. The sensory garden, which has a fountain, is in a very inconvenient spot. University of Southern Indiana, Princeton University and the University of Southern California all have fountains on their campus. The total cost would be approximately $9000. We would plan and design during winter and fall 2026 and the install by early spring. I have been talking with Micheal Runkel.

11. Senator Kurtz, Senator Rades

a. Senators Kurtz and Rades: Our project is to increase student involvement in service-based clubs, community organizations, and civic activities. We would hold a civic engagement fair once per semester featuring local nonprofits, clubs, and university offices. There would be a community challenge for students to participate in. This would take place twice a year, in the first three weeks of each semester. We would reach out to 45 organizations. SGA would host the challenge. We would have a photo wall for people to explain why they would volunteer. Structure of community challenge would be to log community service hours via google form or GIHU, points can be earned for attending civic events. Top individual clubs and organizations would be recognized at the end of semester. We could collaborate with OSLE and FSL. All areas nearby us would be good to collaborate with. Estimated budget would be $1550, including food, live music, prizes, and other expenses. Students would have access to meaningful volunteer experiences and clubs could have stronger community partnerships.

12. Senator Pierre

a. Senator Pierre: The student government gets recognition, but do people know who makes up the senate? Do students only see us as people who swarm their tables during elections? I am proposing an SGA Town Hall where students are able to come, talk, and get to actually know the

people who they elect for the student body. This creates a direct connection between students and SGA. This would replace senate and all senators, chairs and justices would be there. Everyone sits around the table, with no rules, and students would state their concerns. As a student body, we would come up with ways to better support one another. Promotion would include word of mouth, videos and flyers, and an RSVP form. It is a low cost event.

13. Senator Ruffo, Senator Malayeri, Senator Hoffman

a. Senators Malayeri, Ruffo, and Hoffman: Our project is the Hofstra Community Garden. We have one but it is extremely small, we want to turn it into a vibrant, studentrun space that reflects Hofstra’s values. Students could get healthy food and this could promote student wellness. Herbs, flowers, vegetables, etc. Current sustainability initiatives interactive, this would be a hands-on experience. We would focus on planning and coordinating with facilities and student clubs, especially LEAF. The Sustainability studies department maintains the garden and they received a $50,000 grant from the state, so that would be our main financial support. They are expanding another community garden near Oak Street. This is on track to expand on its own, and SGA would be there to help.

Ice Breaker

- What’s your unpopular opinion about college life that you’ll die defending?

Chair Updates

- How is SAW week going?

- Met with SAS

- ALEKS placement test for the summer

- ALEKS is not the accurate representation of your math skills

- More free range for practice test

- If I want to do it or no

- If students took calculus level classes they should not have to take it

- It is long process and not accurate

- For international students

- Not all countries see disabilities the same way

- It is hard to get the documentation from one country to another

- Ask advisors to talk to international students about the possibilities at the first meeting

- Open house at multiple purpose room

- Have more student involvement

- Meaning clubs or different student organizations have advocate for the SAS and represent them more

- There should be International Students advocacy organization

- They can have lounge and so on

- This is issue with the admissions

- We can have pride guide who can work with SAS and would reach out to international students about the accommodations

- International students admissions counselor should reach out to them

- Reach out to the identity based clubs

- They would help us raise the awareness about this issue

- Work with equity on this

- Newsletter for the Spring semester

- Academic Affairs newsletter-student resources, academic achievements, tutoring info, etc.

- What would you like to see?

- Should we make it monthly, bi-monthly, or once per semester?

- Would you want to help write or design any sections?

- We can say “stop by the writing center” or so n

- We can have links for the websites

- Math/computer science departments

- Writing Center, Career Center, CUA

- Career Center- we should promote the career center closet more

- Counseling services should be on this because this is for the first year students

- Student reviews - feedback from the student body what they like and dislike about the department

- We can put it on the instagram, email

- Maybe collaborate with chronicle?

- Sentence or two by the faculty member

- Dean Christy, Jess Eads,

- We can also do department chairs

- Send general email for help

- For the meeting with the library dean

- Student run Cafe for the library

- Dayanna, Jake
