i. Hofstra University President Susan Poser

1. President Poser: I will talk about AI, parking and our idea to put up a college town. First, for AI, I will be reiterating the two main reasons why we did the partnership with Chatgpt. So many of us are using it anyway and when we use the public version, everything we put will be out in the open. Sometimes you may put things that are personal and you don’t have control. A safer way to use it is our sandbox. Anything you put into our ChatGPT EDU, does not get trained on it. We know from employers that they are expecting college graduates to understand how to use it in their industries such as law and medicine. We felt that while you're in college, you have the opportunity to use it. We have revived a teaching and learning center, mainly for faculty, teaching them how to use it and how it affects certain areas. We thought it would be unfair if we weren't teaching you to use it for your industries. It remains at the discretion of faculty if it's used in the classrooms. You have to follow their rules. The administration is neutral. We

are using it as administration for different tasks. For example, using AI, you can create schedules to create pathways for different majors. That’s how we’re using AI, and to free up people from spending hours doing this in Excel etc. which are slower technology. The second issue is parking. The parking is related to the college town idea. There are too many places on south campus where students and cars go in different directions. I want to green up the south campus. For example, the Weller parking lot. I want to make it a place for students to walk through. There are residents who drive to the south campus for classes. This is not allowed, you have to walk. There are huge parking lots where no one really parks. We are going to turn those into the commuter lot and we will run shuttles from there to south campus every 3-5 minutes. That will take a huge number of cars off south campus. This will allow students to find a parking lot when it's busy. We are in the process of hiring a traffic consultant to think this through and think about cost. The third thing I want to talk about is the college town. In order to keep the stadium that needs lots of maintenance and money, is to build a lacrosse stadium on the north side and take down that stadium. The biggest problem is getting land and we own it. The grand plan is to get a developer to come in and develop it into a small village where you can buy food, get jeans, and have a good time. When we get to the stage of negotiating control of who gets what, we will come to you, the you of two years from now, to find out what students want from this village. It will be a few years before this is built but we hope you can help us and then come back and enjoy it. We had people from the land institute give us some advice, but it's in the earliest stage. We plan to take down the north wall of the stadium and open up an area where we can have events. Landscaping, parking and doing with the advancements there.

2. Senator Pierre: On the college town idea, what is the difference between the student center and how would you get students there on the opposite side of campus?

a. President Poser: We are thinking about real restaurants, cafes, retail where we can buy books etc. It’s a town and not like the student center. Think about 7th street in garden city. Think three or four blocks of that. Nothing like the student center or book store, but you’d have to walk to get

there. It won’t be far, just 5-7 minutes, just behind the business school.

3. Senator Finkellstein: You want to “green over” the parking lots on the academic side? For students with disabilities, they may need exceptions. Will you strategically do certain parking lots so some can be closer to buildings?

a. President Poser: Not necessarily all of them, just some of them. There will be systems for students with disabilities. This is why we are getting a parking consultant. We are not eliminating parking and are keeping it for faculty or staff. We haven’t considered the technical aspects yet, but there will be parking just not as much.

4. Chair Dzaveluri: I have been working with CUA and the Writing Center and we discussed how the turnout of students using resources has decreased since the invention of AI. How are you planning to raise awareness of AI on the academic side and promote academic resources that students are unaware of better?

a. President Poser: We have a lot of things that we keep as secrets. I will speak to the provost and ask him about these because they are great resources. I will look into it.

5. Senator Yari: Are all these projects going to impact tuition and how will you negotiate with the retail stores being set up? Will they be expensive, cheaper, or the same prices (clothes, food, books, etc)?

a. President Poser: We are at the stage where it is an idea and we are beginning to plan and are going to get consultants. What you raise about the pricing of stores, we are not going to pay for the town ourselves. It would be much slower to raise this type of money. There are two ways to do this: Make an arrangement with the developer where they say I’m going to make my dime on this land and we will say it’s our land so we need some sort of control. That’s the way to do this. This way won’t cost us as much. The developer will make most of the money because they build it but that will only happen when there are bids. These are very complicated decisions that can’t be made before time. We will use the developer instead of laying all the money out ourselves. This is safer and we can negotiate over the amount of control.

6. Chair Jacob: Do you anticipate student employment would increase with the college town coming in?

a. President Poser: I don’t know. I don’t see why not but it’s very hard for me to say that. We are talking about something that is at least 5 years out. I don’t see this having an effect on tuition. We are trying to raise money for scholarships to make this more affordable. It’s not good for anybody to be raising tuition higher.

7. Senator Araba: I am a commuter. There is a shuttle to Hempstead and Mineola. To Hempstead, one comes every hour, could we have a more frequent one? I also do not think one comes at the 7-8pm hour. There is also a big gap between the morning and afternoon shuttle hours. Hempstead has only one train line, and Mineola has three.

a. President Poser: We are working on improving the shuttles. My chief of staff is. There is a night driver that drives people to parties. We are going to add a third shuttle, whether it's just mineola. We are aware of the issue. We get most complaints from mineola but we will look into the hempstead issue.

8. Senator Bokhari: Is it possible Hofstra would allow for the scholarship to be applied to winter and summer classes? Affordability for these is an issue given we cannot take classes elsewhere and they are expensive as is.

a. President Poser: Right now we can’t do that because its just for the academic year. I know the summer is expensive and I know the 17th hour credit is still an issue. I am not sure that you can use federal financial aid for summer. The scholarships we give are geared towards tuition so a scholarship for summer would be a different one. I can look into that. We are trying to generate more scholarships for the general academic year. It would just be taking something else from somewhere.

9. Chair Ahmad: You have talked a lot about innovation and community on campus. What will Hofstra’s identity be within the next decade given all the projects?

a. President Poser: I came here about 4 years ago and I was intrigued by the university because it is unique structurally. This was a school with 10,000 students but had everything. That was extraordinary. I also then developed a lot of

ambition for the school. I thought we could leverage that to do more research, bring more students, and increase our reputation. Some of that is true communication, but that is something I have been driving for. One thing coming up when asked what Hofstra needs was we can’t walk off campus and do anything. To reach those ambitions, was to build more interdisciplinary programs. We were in the top schools for Music business. This shows the connection of different disciplines to create careers. We do a lot of service but we could do more engagement in the neighborhood. Retention numbers have increased 0.5 a year. We had our highest 4 year graduation rate this year. These things are making us better and we’re operating at a higher level. I’ve hired wonderful people, like deans, marketing and communication. We have the right people and we are ambitious in realizing that plan. I am excited about this. Everyone that comes here is amazed by the student body. Lynda Barry, an artist, really enjoyed being here.

10. Senator Chauhan: I do appreciate Hofstra’s commitment to our safety. I run into students still using their personal AI because of the university seeing their data? Can we have some transparency in what situations this would be? Also, students do not know the impact of AI on the environment, so I think we should spread awareness on how it affects it given that students use it for unnecessary tasks. When you introduced the edu partnership, it encouraged you to sign up. There should be a note about the environmental impact, since students do not know and therefore do not understand the impact.

a. President Poser: As for transparency goes, the only time we would be looking at this is if we are required to, such as a plagiarism case or a lawsuit. But we don’t look at this. We could look at your email too but we don’t do it. But, if we have to do it we can. We have no interest in doing it and we have a policy against this unless it is really necessary. I can only assure you that it’s against policy to go reading people’s business. It’s not why we have it and no one has an interest in what you're putting into Chatgpt. As for the second part, there have been initiatives to make data centers more sustainable. People know about this. Do you want us

to use a public campaign explaining the environmental risks of chatgpt? That’s a very good idea. I am going to write down these ideas.

11. Senator Yari: I heard we are going to have an EMT club on campus with partnerships from different hospitals? What are the plans with that and how will it work? I heard they are collaborating with Northwell to bring more ambulances and such to campus.

a. President Poser: I am not aware of the EMT ambulances. I have heard about students who are trained EMTs also being available for emergencies along with public safety. The student could help public safety. I know it's in the works but I don't know about ambulances.

12. Senator Pierre: I wanted to ask about the thoughts on the town hall? It may not be fresh in your memory, and there were issues brought up that you may have not been aware of, particularly concerning students of color? How did you learn and how will you use what you learned from those groups?

a. President Poser: That was the main thing I learned there. There seems to be an issue on campus, that particularly black students don’t feel safe on campus. I learned later about an incident or two that happened. We had discussions about how to move forward and I know Jessica Eads is having a meeting next week. There are 25 students signed up for that so far. I have a meeting with one of the students who was there. The first thing for us to do is to listen. What is happening in the country is frightening. Some of what happens affects people on campus. When there are issues between faculty and students, I am interested in understanding. I am thinking of bias-training. For many racial and religious groups, it is a scary time to live in the United States right now. It is the way our country looks. We need to figure out how to live together in today’s diverse world. I think outside events are making this very difficult. My plan is to listen. A committee could be created as a solution to this to help make things better. I have been dedicated to making the best environment for everybody.

13. Chair Orellana: Speaking to the previous speakers’ point, many students of color do not feel safe. A lot of events occur on campus, and there is no possible way of reporting events on campus due to a lack of surveillance and no cameras. Is there any way to

implement more surveillance so students can be heard rather than feel stuck when they come to public safety about these issues?

a. President Poser: This is the kind of thing that if there is a real sense that this will help make students feel better, we have to figure it out and sometimes it may be the best thing to do. But everyone will have to be okay when they are on camera. If that's what we need to do to solve problems, then that’s absolutely doable.

14. Senator Smook: So I have heard there has been activity with ICE in Hempstead. How would you protect immigrant students from ICE raids?

a. President Poser: Last February or March, we addressed this with some emails. We also gave out little cards that explained what you should do if you see ICE agents. Your remarks are a reminder that we should do this again. If they have a warrant we can’t throw them off campus but if there’s something we can do we will.

15. Chair Dzaveluri: For the question in town hall about Africana Studies, are there any initiatives to bring back related classes? There are so many niche classes not offered anymore that are offered on degreeworks, which can be bothersome. Are there any initiatives for bringing back these classes or removing them from degreeworks?

a. President Poser: On the false hope, college catalogs have way more than semesters offer. It is very hard to deal with that. There are some classes offered and that depends on if there is faculty available to teach it. If there are a good number of students that want to take a class, then you have to bring us. SGA can help us identify what classes students want. I encourage you to fill out the identity survey, which we will use. If there are classes students want, you can take on the role of letting us know. Some classes fade out because there isn’t enough student demand.

16. Chair Jacob: I am an international student and it is not the biggest population of international students, but the medical school does not take international students. They only take ones who have done their undergraduate outside of the US, not international students who have done their undergraduate inside the US. Why is this?

a. President Poser: I am not aware of that and it surprises me. I will look into that. If it is true, it will be connected to federal aid or citizenship.

17. Senator Urban: I am a commuter and I think the town is a great idea. I have a question regarding AI. Jesse Webster discussed how 5000 student accounts registered for ChatGPT. About a month into GPTedu, do you know how many students have registered for GPTedu?

a. President Poser: I heard this number several weeks ago and it was something around 2500-3000. This was before the town hall so it could be double that by now.

18. Senator Araba: How do we ensure professors teach us how to think and what not to think? Also, how do you ensure there can be political discussions on campus without certain students being ostracized like on Fizz? How can we avoid political violence?

a. President Poser: The faculty’s role is to teach you things and facts, but not what to think about them. It is very difficult for me to control the faculty. If there are things that happen in the classroom that you think are wrong, you should report that. We have ethics point for reporting things. It will get read and steered in the right direction. As far as fizz goes, and you find out something someone said about you, that has been going on long before fizz. Social media is poisonous and we cannot control that. There are a few administrators that look at it but it is impossible to control. We want to hear if there are things going on that are affecting students or making them feel that they are not being treated with respect. Well, it is through finding ways to have civil dialogue with each other and there are initiatives on campus to do that. Through affinity groups and clubs, we try to make this a warm and welcoming community but we are in a listening mode to make it better.

19. Chair Ahmad: As the President who deals with primary communication between students and administration, how can social and political issues be discussed in a civil manner, particularly in the wake of the recent elections Tuesday and antiMuslim speech?

a. President Poser: I am a big believer in speech and dialogue and responding to speech or ideas you don’t like with more speech. If there is a situation on campus where anyone is

being discriminated against there are ways to report this. It’s easier when it's not anonymous. We need to increase our efforts on civil dialogue and thinking about the really wonderful things of having such a diverse campus. I have a great responsibility to make the campus a better community.

20. Senator Rades: It seems like students have been expressing a lot of concerns regarding online reporting of discrimination and Title IX? Reports are often not followed up or confirmed or investigated thoroughly? What are we doing to fix this?

a. President Poser: One thing that we are doing is making sure that there is a message going back that says we received your complaint and we will follow up with you. On some of these complaints, they are investigated but there is not enough evidence. If you report anonymously it makes it harder. When there is a result like title IX, that is not usually shared with anybody. You don’t exactly know how it ended but that’s the privacy aspect of these situations. We are working on improving communication with ethics point.

c. 5 Minute Recess

d. Empowher Club Check-In

i. Presentation

1. Presenter 1: We are here to represent women on and off campus. We got approved in 2024. We had a few meetings, and we held a domestic violence event. One of our first events was a bake sale for domestic violence. All the donations went to Bethany’s house, a homeless shelter for women and children. Upcoming events are a domestic violence tabling. Because of lack of funding, we had our first meeting just to be an introduction. We also had a yoga and destress event. We are planning to do this again due to positive feedback. We also had a nail painting event. It fostered sisterhood. Our largest event last year was our women’s history month dinner which garnered lots of good feedback. The total cost was $1000, with food and decorations. We hope to expand this and get more funding to do so. We plan to host this event again this spring, and hope to have greater attendance.

2. VP Khan: Another event we had is fundraisers. We empower people on and off campus. We spent $275 and our total was $400. We donated all that to Bethany’s house. It was a test trial. We hope

to sell and donate more cups going forward. We had a make-a-clay creation. At the Fall 2025 club fair, we attracted a lot of first-years. We were happy to connect with a lot of people. We had a flowerbouquet making event at the start of the semester. The flowers ran out halfway through due to a high turnout. We had someone who interviewed people at the event and it got positive feedback. Our recorded attendance was 70, but it was even higher than that. We plan to collaborate with the maternal justice program next semester. There was a dental society in Nassau County reaching out to us. She said it is nice to emphasize what we are about and discussed future collaborations. They do things like oral cancer awareness and free screenings. In February they have Give Kids a Smile Day, and we hope to collaborate on that. We want everyone to feel welcome and experience joy. We hope to get bigger events, collaborate with more resources, and have your support.

3. Senator Pierre: I know your events have a lot of support, but are there any other ways you will advertise your events, particularly to commuter students?

a. VP Khan: We are commuters ourselves, so we have been advertising through flyers. Our main source for getting people is freshmen. We bring awareness through our posts.

4. Chair Ahmad: They have a lot of really cool events, more funding would be beneficial.

5. Senator Rades: I have attended some of their events in the past and there was lots of thought put into it. I think more funding would help them promote their funding a lot more.

6. Senator Pierre: They merit recognition given their body of work and what they have done for the community and all they have done as a Pride club.

7. Senator Green: I like what they are doing. I think we should collaborate with them.

8. Senator Rades moves to complete the check-in process for EmpowHer as of November 2025.

e. Hindu Student Association Club Check-In

i. Presentation

1. Secretary: Our mission is to form a home away from home for Hindus, as we were the only religion without a club.

2. Events Manager: We were lighting up fireworks for one event, and it was a mess. But we were running around and having a good time. That is what Hinduism is about. We have 3-4 general meetings per semester, usually before a religious holiday. We decorated dandiyas for Garba.

3. Senator Thani: The Holi Olympics was one of the first events we held. We collaborated with SASA and they had a big number of members, so we wanted to increase our membership.

4. Treasurer: We held Disco Diwali in Fall 2024 and had a section for a Dandiya dance.

5. Senator Thani: We held the Holi Olympics again and had many more people.

6. Secretary: Garba Night was our biggest event yet.

7. Events manager: We then held a Holi Dinner right after Holi.

8. Treasurer: We held an inaugural Diya Lighting Ceremony for Diwali and used Hofstra Hall for the evening. Many other campuses do this and we were able to invite a local priest. This creates a welcoming environment for Hindus and those who want to learn about it.

9. Secretary: We are getting more popular and want to be able to do more bigger events.

10. Treasurer: We plan on inviting the local priest for Puja next semester and also formals/banquets. We are taking the lead for the Holi Olympics and reimagining it. We plan on getting a DJ and food to get more people to come. Members of HSA plan to go to Hindu temples and volunteer for their meal services to give them a way to practice Seva. we have a lot more collaborations planned with other religious organizations and SGA. We are planning a wellness event with Rachel.

11. Senator Green: I love your club. I have a lot of Hindu friends who go to Garba. There was an instance at Garba last year, which had to be rectified? Do you want to hone in the message of Hinduism to followers?

a. Treasurer: That was SASA’s Disco Diwali which we joined too. Outside people came and the event had to be shut down. Now, every single outside guest has to be associated with a Hofstra student. This will force accountability. We can emphasize the message of Hinduism to outr followers to make sure it does not happen again.

12. Senator Finkelstein: Important to support religious clubs on campus

13. Senator Smook: I agree with Logan that everyone has a right to feel represented. They have a lot of fun events and deserve our funding.

14. Chair Orellana: They are a really great club and are always down to collaborate and very responsive.

15. Senator Rades: It is not their fault that the fight broke out at Disco Diwali. It was a one-time unfortunate situation that happened when their club was starting up. Their events are very well put together.

16. Senator Chauhan: I have attended their events, and their E-board is very dedicated.

17. Senator Green: I am not sure if they are required to have P-Safe at their events. This is an hourly charge, so they will definitely need the funding.

18. Chair Jacob: They should have P-Safe at their larger events. I am currently working on a collaboration with them and they are very organized and passionate about making their presence known on campus.

19. Senator Peri: Just to be clear, checking them in does not guarantee more funding, only gives them access to it.

20. Senator Finkelstein moves to complete the check-in process for Hindu Student Association as of November 2025

b. Motion passed

f. SA.2025.90.015

i. Presented by Comptroller Skeldon and President Quail

1. Comptroller Skeldon: This makes policy consistent with practice. We do not fund formals that are specific to the club and this is clarifying it in policy. The committee has the right to reserve to determine whether the event is formal. We have also increased funding for hotel rooms to 250/night. For funding for fundraising items, this includes instances like Fall Fest or Music Fest which can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

a. Senator Green: Was the World Gala a formal?

i. President Quail: No, it was specifically tied to the mission of the anthropology club. Sometimes clubs request to have outside formals, which we cannot accommodate. This excludes formal events tying to the mission of the club.

b. Senator Peri: Are these changes to be put into effect for budget weekend?

i. Comptroller Skeldon: The only one that was an actual change in policy was for hotels. This will not go into effect for budget weekend as some budgets have already been reviewed.

c. Senator Pierre: How would fundraising look for clarification purposes? In what cases can they fundraise?

i. President Quail: We don’t fund for a club income but there are very specific instances where this is necessary like Music Fest so clubs sell tickets to fund the event.

2. Senator Vira moves to pass SA.2025.90.015

g. SAW Presentation

i. Presented by Chair Iacobovici and Vice President Young

1. Chair Iacobovici: SAW is a week that we serve students to help out initiatives that committees make to get from students. We bring results to the administration.

2. VP Young: Tabling can count as office hours. We do week long tabling and try to reach our 1000 surveys goal, and we host Build a Friend. Don’t get extra merch. What is in the box for the day is all we have set out for the day.

3. Chair Iacobovici: There will be 10 people per shift for BAF. People have different roles. 2 shifts will reverse an absence. 1 bear per person and they have to fill out the survey.

4. Tabling Do’s: Show up on time, have energy, connect with the students, encourage students to fill out the survey, represent SGA well, answer any questions accurately, text the social chat if you need someone to cover shifts

5. Tabling Don’ts: Walk away from your table to pick up Starbucks, do not be inappropriate (office etiquette), peer pressure or force or demand, ignore people, do not follow people around, do not no call no show

6. Chair Ahmad: Are we going by an honor code system for BAF so if people say they fill out the survey we trust they did?

a. President Quail: People should have a screenshot of their completed BAF survey when getting a stuffed animal. There will also be QR codes there for them to fill out the survey.

7. Senator Pierre: Is it ok to go up to tables?

a. VP Young: Going up to tables is fine, do not sit down or follow people though.

b. Chair Iacobovici: You can go to tables and ask students to take the survey but be nice, don’t follow people.

8. Senator Chauhan: Are we giving people something if they fill out the survey?

a. VP Young: At the table, there will be SGA merch to give students after they complete the survey. They can pick one item of merch.

American Cancer Society

- Comptroller Skeldon: Survivor and Care Giver Diner: Budget is tight and the event is not designed for students. I also want to use a voucher for Relay Dinner foods. We also do not currently fund work orders, we can fund later with SGA contingency.

- Relay for Life Participant Food was allocated through a food voucher.

- Work order labor charges was allocated through the SGA contingency

- Senator Green and the committee decide to partially fund the $1350 DJ $750 (policy series maximum)

- There is a debate concerning the funding of the Survivor and Caregiver Dinner. The dinner had never been done to this scale before, and most of the members attending the dinner are not students
