Demographic change. NCSS has analyzed demographic change on Long Island, focusing on young adults and new immigrants, and coorganized a 2011 conference on suburbs and the Census. Aging. The Center has partnered with North Hempstead and Nassau County to study service delivery for residents who are aging in place.

Social and Economic Jus4ce The Center has released working papers on the high rates of subprime and FHA lending in the region’s communi4es of color. Community Revitaliza4on. We have partnered with researchers who are evalua4ng ongoing community revitaliza4on efforts in New Cassel.

Recovered Histories Oral History Project. Faculty, students, and community members are collec4ng histories of the earliest African American residents of Hempstead and Uniondale. In 2013, Temple University Press released an NCSSedited volume of papers on suburban social movements past and present.

Celebra4on of Suburban Diversity. This annual event brings together community, non-profit, and business leaders to honor area ac4vists and ar4sts who promote tolerance and preserve cultural tradi4ons. Cultures of the Suburbs Interna4onal Research Network. We are the U.S. affiliate of this new research group, and its second symposium – on suburban sprawl and disorder – was held at Hofstra this summer.
