For 50 years, beginning with its opening in 1963, the Hofstra University Museum has offered the University and the New York regional community exhibitions that expand our knowledge and understanding through the visual arts.
In The Lyon, the Which, and the Warhol exhibitions, we turn to the rich resources of our expanding permanent collection, with an emphasis on recent gifts of photography, to communicate the themes embedded in each exhibit. Offered in juxtaposition with recent and past gifts in other media, the exhibitions, curated by Museum Collections Manager Kristy L. Caratzola, encourage viewers to consider how artists employ portraiture and physical presence as well as other tools to break the barriers of societal stereotypes.
The Lyon, the Which, and the Warhol features selections from two major donations of works to the Hofstra University Museum collection created by photojournalist Danny Lyon and visionary Pop artist Andy Warhol. Photographs from Lyon’s acclaimed 1968 book, The Bikeriders, chronicle the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club, offering insider access to members of a provocative American subculture. In the early 1970s, Warhol introduced Polaroid instant photography into his artistic process. Posed images of his celebrity friends and wealthy patrons were used to create multiple silkscreen and painted portraits. Artworks by Chuck Close, Jim Dine and Lisbeth Firmin become “the Which,” connecting with Lyon and Warhol through shared methods of indirect portraiture, process and physical presence.

The Lyon, the Which, and the Warhol: The Sequel explores aspects of identity, gender and perception through works by Danny Lyon, Andy Warhol, Eduardo Paolozzi, Diane Arbus and Garry Winogrand. Danny Lyon’s intimate, casual portraits defy preconceived stereotypes the viewer may have regarding his fellow Chicago Outlaws by revealing their humanity as individuals. These straightforward images of home life, family and casual encounters shared among friends emphasize collective social values that extend beyond divisions existing between various subcultures. Process-based Polaroids and black and white prints of models, artists and socialites taken by Andy Warhol examine the shifting personas and sexuality of his subjects in both artifcial and candid contexts. In many instances, Warhol distances himself from his inner circle, adopting the role of a paparazzo-like outsider trying to capture a glimpse of the celebrity spectacle that informed his artwork and characterized his own public image.
