I LOOK AT THE LAND THE LAND LOOKS BACK

We are adept, if occasionally embarrassed, at saying what we make of places – but we are far less good at saying what place makes of us. For some time now it has seemed to me that the two questions we should ask of any strong landscape are these: frstly, what do I know when I am in this place that I can know nowhere else? And then, vainly, what does this place know of me that I cannot know of myself?

‘I Look at the Land | The Land Looks Back’ is a photography project aimed at showcasing the traits of Nunavik’s territory: in, around, and far from the villages. All residents of Nunavik, of all ages and expertise, were invited to share pictures in a friendly contest.

Participants were free to express the beauty of the territory in any manner, and all subjects were welcome. The only criterion was that the photographs show what is found beautiful, special, intimate, or simply expressive of the Land.
