會 長 的 話 首 先 我 謹 代 表 香 港 大 學 學 生 會 歡 迎 各 位 來 到 香 港 大 學，踏 入 這 人 生 的 中 轉 站， 尋 覓 自己 獨 特 的 方 向，並 與 我 們 共 同 承 傳 前 人 為 我 們 所 建 立 的 基 業。 「 有 得 揀，先 至 係 老 闆！」 常 言 道 大 學 有 五 件 必 做 的 事，分 別 是 上 莊﹑住 hall ﹑拍 拖 ﹑兼 職 和 讀 書，同 學 往 往 眼 花 繚 亂，顧 此 失 彼。全 身 投 入 兼 職 者，成 績 可 能 一 落 千 丈，無 法 率 先 選 擇 海 外 交 流 的 大 學；全 意 投 身 拍 拖 者，莊 務 可 能 束 之 高 閣，失 去 一 段 莊 友 間 的 患 難 生 死 之 情。最 後 得 此 失 彼，晚 上 睡 覺 靜 思，往 往 思 而 不 得，輾 轉 反 側。 當 初 同 學 選 擇 努 力 讀 書，選 擇 了 香 港 大 學，選 擇 了 自 己 所 入 讀 的 學 院，一 切 皆 是 你 們 過 去 的 選 擇。只 要 有 所 選 擇，一 切 就 有 計 劃，也 就 有 了 未 來，而 此 未 來 就 不 至 於 見 步 行 步。短 短 數 年 的 大 學 生 活 中，我 們 取 的 多，捨 的 也 多。於 我 而 言，謹 慎 的 作 出 選 擇，永 遠 使 自己 有 所 選 擇，是 在 大 學 中 重 要 的 一 課。 「為 什 麼 讀 大 學？為 什 麼 讀 香 港 大 學？」 我 們 求 學 問，究 竟 所 為 何 事？是 為了 找 一 份 好 的 工 作？是 滿 足 父 母 以 至 社 會 的 期 望？還 是 你 出 於 對 學 問 本 身 的 嚮 往？不 論 如 何，大 學 是 一 個 最 接 近 社 會，卻 又不 那 麼「 社 會」的 地 方。在 虛 擬 與 現 實 之 間，我 們 在 這 裡 有 思 考 的 空 間。思 考 就 是 一 連 串 的 衝 擊，透 過 反 覆 思 辨，發 展 出 一 套 自 己 篤 信 不 疑 的 信 念。有 了信 念，我 們 就 找 到 方 向。一 生 人 的 方 向。 有 道：為 天 地 立心，為 生 民 立 命，為 往 聖 繼 絕 學，為 萬世 開 太平。學 子 奮 力向 上， 思 考 偶 有 所 得，除了為 自 身，也 為 香 港 這 自 家 小 島。香 港 大 學 歷 年人 才 輩 出，既 有 推 動 社 會 變 革 的 革 命 先 烈，也 有 掀 起 社 會 思 潮 更 迭 的 文 人 義 士。雖 則 他 們 卒 業 良 久， 但 無 不 委 身 貢 獻，盼 以 自己 所 學 回 饋 他 們 的 社 會。社 會 對 大 學 生 有 一 定 期 望，此 乃 常 事，不 必 在 意。不 過，我 很 希 望 大 家 可 以 共 同 以 推 動 香 港 進 步 為 目 標，以 所 學 和 承 擔，熱 誠 和 勇 氣，發 揮 你 們 光 明 的 德 性，承 繼 前 人 的 犧 牲 精 神，守 護 香 港 我 城。 最 後，謹 祝 各 位 新 生 能 夠 無 憾 無 悔，勇 往 直 前。 馮敬恩 香港大學學生會 會長

President’s Message

On behalf of the Hong Kong University Students’ Union, I would like to welcome you all to the University of Hong Kong, a crossroads in your lifelong pursuit of your unique direction, a place to perpetuate the well-established foundation our predecessors have laid.

‘It’s a matter of choice!’

As the saying goes, there are five must-dos in university: studying, living in a hall, getting a part-time job, becoming an ex-co, and falling in love. The various choices may be mesmerising. But the taking up of one means the giving up of another. Dedication to your part-time job may lead to a plunge in your grades, putting you in a worse position in choosing your preferred host university in an exchange programme; devotion to your lover may leave your duty as an ex-co unattended and cost you the indelible friendship between you and your colleagues. The giving and taking trigger so much thought that you can no longer sleep well at night.

You once chose to study hard. You chose HKU. You chose your faculty. Those were all choices you’ve made. When there is a choice, there is a plan; when there is a plan, there is a future. When you can see the future, you no longer need to hesitate over your prospects.

In the course of your university life which will only last for a few years, much is taken, and much is given. You should always give yourself options and make decisions cautiously— this is an important lesson I learned in my university life.

‘Why do we study in university? Why do we study in HKU?’ Why do we have to pursue knowledge? Is it for a decent job? Is it for satisfying parents’

and society’s expectations? Or does it come from your own aspirations for knowledge? No matter what your answer is, you cannot deny the fact that university is so much like our society. But it’s not exactly like it in a sense. We have the capacity to think here, a place in between imagination and reality. Thinking is a series of impulses. It is through incessant and repeated thinking that we develop an irrefutable belief. A belief then comes to a direction—a lifelong direction.

‘To ordain conscience for Heaven and Earth; to secure life and fate for the people; to continue lost teachings of past sages; to establish peace for all future generations.’ Students endeavour for betterment. What we gain from our contemplation shall not be only for ourselves, but for our island, Hong Kong. HKU has bred generations of talents. Not only were there martyrs revolutionising our society, but there were also scholars ushering changes in ideologies. Many years after their graduation, they are still committed to contributing to our society with their own knowledge. It is universally known and acknowledged that society has great expectations on university students. This is normal, and we need not trouble ourselves too much with it. Still, I do hope that we all take social progress as our goal. With our knowledge, commitment, passion, and courage, we shall demonstrate our virtues and perpetuate the sacrificing spirit. Together we defend our city of Hong Kong.

Last but not least, I wish all freshmen a bright future with no regrets.

迎新活動

Orientation Activities 顧 名 思 義 ， 迎 新 活 動 （ 簡 稱 「 O」） 就 是 專 為 迎 接 新 生 而 設 的 活 動 。 港 大 的 迎 新 活 動 分 別 由 學 生 會 、 學 生 會 轄 下 屬 會 以 及 校 方 的 學 生 資 源 及 發 展 中 心 （ CEDARS ） 各自籌辦。透過參與迎新活動，同學們除了可以認識新朋友外，還可以向師兄師 姐請教選科的心得，更可以認識港大校園及文化，增加對港大的認識及歸屬感。 很多屬會幹事也會在 O Camp 中物色接班人，若有興趣上莊，就不可錯過 O Camp 了。 Orientation activities (usually called “O” in HKU) are activities designed to welcome freshmen.

Different orientation activities in HKU are held by the Union, union sub-organisations, and the Centre of Development and Resources for Students (“CEDARS”).

Through participating in orientation activities, freshmen can make new friends, receive tips from seniors on course registration, and also learn more about the culture and environment of HKU, cultivating a better sense of belonging towards the university.

It is common for executive committee members of student societies to look for successors during their orientation activities. So if you’re interested in becoming executive committee members, don’t miss out on these orientation activities!

退款機制

Refund Policy 迎新時期的活動均設有退款機制。如新生在報名當天申請退款，可獲全 數退款；在新生註冊日期間（非報名當天）申請退款，可獲 90% 退款； 在 活 動 開 始 前 4 8 小 時 申 請 退 款 ， 只 可 獲 7 5 % –10 0 % 退 款 ； 在 活 動 開 始 前 4 8 小時之內申請退款，則有可能不獲退款。迎新時期難免會有撞期的 情況出現，新生切記要作適當的取捨及編排。 A refund policy applies to all activities during the orientation period. If you apply for refund on the day you applied for the event, you can get a 100% refund; apply on a later day during the Registration Day, 90%; 48 hours or more before the event begins, 75%–100%; 48 hours or less before the event begins, 0%. Time clashes are sometimes inevitable during the orientation period, so be ready to make compromises and arrange your schedule smartly!

Hall Admission Mechanism 由 20 09 年 起，同 學 申 請 宿 位 將 會 有 一 套 新 的 評 分 標 準。新 的 評 分 標 準 以 Need

(N) 及 Merit (M) 為 準 則，評 分 會 根 據 以下 公 式 計 算： In 2009, a new scoring system for hall registration was introduced. Need (N) and Merit (M) are the two criteria of the new scoring system. The following formula illustrates how the scores for hall registration are calculated: NEED SCORE

It takes into account your travelling time to HKU, the average area available per family member, the type of housing of your home, etc. Merit score (M) is decided by each individual hall. 申 請宿 位程 序

Hall Admission Procedures 同 學 可 到 Portal → Online Applications → Application for Resident Hall 申 請 舍 堂 宿 位。今 年 的 截 止 日 期 為 2015 年 8 月 17 日 下 午 2 時 59 分，面 試 將 於 之 後 兩 日 舉 行，新 生 務 必 預 留 時 間。結 果 將 會 於 2015 年 8 月 20 日公 佈，申 請 失 敗 的 同 學 可 於 得 知 結 果 後 三 日內 申 請 appeal。 成 功 申 請 宿 位 的 同 學 請 留 意，宿 位 只 為 期 一 年，同 學 在 學 年 完 結 後 若 想 繼 續 在 舍 堂 住 宿，必 須 再 次 申 請。 To apply for halls, please log on to HKU Portal → Online Applications → Application for Resident Hall. The deadline for hall registration this year is 2:59 p.m. on 17 August 2015.

Interview sessions will be held on the next day, so don’t forget to reserve your time. The admission result will be announced on 20 August 2015. Unsuccessful applicants can apply for an appeal within three days after the announcement of the hall admission result.

Please be reminded that the places in the halls will only last for one year. Readmission at the end of the academic year is required if you wish to continue living in your hall.

HKU Portal 全 日 制 本 科 生 可 用 申 請 學 位 時 所 使 用 的 電 郵 地 址，檢 查 一 封 由 reg1@hku.hk 寄 給 你、名 為「 Registration for New Full-time Undergraduate Students 」的 郵 件，電 郵 中 會 列 出 內 聯 網 註 冊 的 程 序，以 及 你 的 Portal ID 和 密 碼。 在 登 記 成 功 後，同 學 可使 用 Portal 帳 戶 來 reg 科、收 發 電 郵、報 hall、報 exchange、 預 約 診 症、查 閱 考 試 時 間 表、學 科資 訊、GPA ……簡 而 言 之，Portal 將 會 成 為 你 大 學 生 活 中 不 可 或 缺 的 一 個 部 分。 For full-time undergraduates, please check your personal email account used in admission application for an email from reg1@hku.hk with the subject “Registration for New Full-time Undergraduate Students”. This email details the master registration procedures and includes your HKU Portal UID and PIN. After registration, you can use your Portal account to register courses, check email, apply for halls and exchange programmes, book medical services, access exam time tables, browse course information, check your GPA, etc. In other words, HKU Portal will become an indispensable part of your university life.

影 印服 務

Printing Services 現 時，同 學 除了 可使 用 學 校 的 電 腦 和 影 印 機 影 印 文件 外，亦 可 把自己 的 電 腦 連 接 至 學 校 的 uPrint 系 統，直 接 在 個 人電 腦 上 進 行 操 作，十 分方便。同 學 每 年 都 會 收 到 100 個 免 費 的 printing credits（價 值 $30），如 同 學 用 完 了 學 生 證 內 的 credits，可使 用 智 華 館 和 The Oval 的 增 值 機 用 八 達 通 增 值。 Apart from using the university’s facilities to print documents, you can now print directly from your own computer by connecting it to the university’s uPrint service. You’ll receive 100 free printing credits (worth HK$30) each year from the university. If you’ve used them up, you can reload your account with an Octopus card using the add-value machines in the Chi Wah Learning Commons or the Oval.

Tuition and Accommodation Fee 每 年 學 費 及 宿 費 分 兩 期 繳 交，同 學 可 透 過 ATM、支 票 或 網 上 銀 行 繳 交 學 費。校 方 不 接 受 本 地 學 生 以 信 用 卡 繳 交 學 費。同 學 可 於 Portal → Financial Services → My

遲 交 會 點？

Late Payment 若 同 學 遲 交 費 用，學 校 會 先 寄 信 到 同 學 家 中 提 醒 同 學 到 鈕 魯 詩 樓 一 樓 繳 交 學 費。若 同 學 於 一 個 月內 仍 未 繳 清 學 費，校 方 將 封 鎖 其 Portal 戶口 及 停止 其 學 生 證 功 能。同 學 將 不 能 使 用 Portal，亦 不 能 使 用 學 校 的 設 施，如 智 華 館、圖 書 館、體 育 場 館 等。同 學 於 繳 清 欠 款 後，更 須 繳 交 行 政 費 用（該 筆 款 項 的 10% 或 港 幣 500 元 之 較 低 者）。 If you fail to pay the fees on time, the university will send you a letter reminding you to go to Knowles Building 1/F to settle the payments. If payment is not settled within 30 days after the due date, your HKU Portal account and student card will be deregistered, and you will be prohibited from using university facilities and services. To reinstate your student status, you will have to pay a surcharge of 10% of the outstanding fees, or $500, whichever is less.

Financial Assistance 政府資助

1. Tertiary Student Finance Scheme (TSFS). Also nicknamed “Grant-Loan”, the scheme consists of two parts—a grant and a low-interest loan. The scheme also provides student travel subsidy and hostel subsidy.

Since the Student Financial Assistance Agency (SFAA) launched an e-submission scheme in August 2014, all applications can only be submitted to SFAA through the online platform at http://ess.sfaa.gov.hk/. CEDARS can help students check their TSFS application forms upon request to make sure that the information and supporting documents submitted are

in order. Please call CEDARS at 2859 2305 for assistance.

You are required to hand in the declaration and supporting documents within 7 days after submitting the application online. These can be submitted to the SFAA drop box which is located at CEDARS (3/F, Ming Wah Complex). Normally, if the application is successful, you will receive a result notification in about 2 months’ time. You will receive the grants and loans in two instalments. The first instalment of grants and loans will be transferred to your bank account in 4 weeks’ and 6 weeks’ time respectively, and the second instalment of grants and loans will be paid to you during December 2015 and February 2016.

2. Non-means-tested Loan Scheme (NLS). If you find the application procedures for TSFS too complicated, you can consider applying for the Non-means-tested Loan Scheme (NLS).

Although the application process is simpler, students need to pay an administrative fee and a higher interest rate. Detailed information of the above scheme can be found on the website of the Student Financial Assistance Agency: http://www.sfaa.gov.hk/

五、HKU Fresh$3000。由 CEDARS 提 供 的 獎 學金，為合 資格同學 提 供 $3,000 的資助。 申請 者必須（一）是本地 永久性 居民；（二）是 第一年入讀港大的全日制本 科生；（三）在 入學前已 經 有申領 綜 援。今 年 的 截 止日期 為 2015 年 9 月 30 日，申請 表格可 到 CEDARS （明 華 綜 合 大 樓 三 樓）領 取。

1. Main Exercise. If you’re experiencing financial hardship, you can consider applying for the Main Exercise at Portal → Online Applications → UFA Main Exercise. In 2014–15, the success rate was 91.3% and the amount of assistance offered ranged from $5,000 to $50,000. This year’s application deadline is 2 October 2015.

2. Emergency Assistance. Should any urgent or unexpected financial need arise, you can consider applying for the Emergency Assistance, which is available for application throughout the year. 3. Student Travel Loan. If you need financial support to pay for overseas exchange, field trips, or practicums, you can consider applying for this means-tested, interest-free loan.

Note that the related programme should have the support from the department or faculty.

Priority goes to those who have successfully applied for the TSFS scheme. To apply for this scheme, you also need to call CEDARS for an appointment to meet a student advisor. You should also submit an application form and relevant documents during the interview. The application form is available at http://cedars.hku.hk/form/emergency_st.pdf.

4. First-in-the-Family Education Fund (FIFE Fund). This fund provides a financial support of $12,000 to successful applicants to pay for university-administered/supported learning activities such as overseas exchange programmes, living in residential halls, and internships. Applicants have to meet three major criteria.

Firstly, you have to be the first generation of university student(s) in your family (i.e. your grandparents and parents do not have any university education); secondly, your family should have a monthly household income of HK$15,868 or less; thirdly, you family should have a total value of savings and assets of HK$229,000 or less per family member. Occasionally, exceptional cases (e.g. students who have family member(s) suffering from chronic illness or have several siblings studying in university) that do not satisfy the second and third criteria may also be approved at the discretion of the steering committee.

This fund is open for application twice a year. Round 1 application is in September, and Round 2 application is in January. For more information, please visit http://www.fife.hku.hk/.

5. HKU Fresh$3000. This is a bursary scheme provided by CEDARS which awards $3,000 to successful applicants. To be eligible for this scheme, you have to be (a) a local permanent resident of Hong Kong; (b) a full-time undergraduate newly admitted to HKU this year; (c) a recipient of comprehensive social security assistance prior to entry to the university. This year’s application deadline is 30 September 2015, and application forms are available from CEDARS (3/F, Meng Wah Complex).

自 古 有 云：「 萬 般 皆 下 品，唯 有 讀 書 高。」至 於 如 何 評 價 這 句 名 言，就 交 由 各 位 同 學 思 考，但 是 無 可 否 認 的 是，讀 好 書 乃 是 大 學 生 的 本 份。 There’s an old Chinese saying that goes, “Studying is the noblest of all human pursuits.” This claim may be controversial, but it’s hard to deny that studying is a basic responsibility of university students.

GPA，即 grade point average，為 大 學 評 估 學 生 成 績 的 制 度。除了 BDS（牙 醫 學 士） 和 MBBS（內 外 全 科 醫 學 士）課 程 外，所 有 課 程 的 成 績 均 以 GPA 計算。 同 學 在 查 閱 成 績 的 時 候 會 看 到 兩 個 GPA，分 別 是 學 期 成 績 平 均 績 點（semester

GPA，sGPA ）和 累 積 成 績 平 均 績 點（cumulative GPA，cGPA ）。sGPA 是 每 個 學 期 修 讀 所 有 科目之平均 分，而 cGPA 則 是 從 同 學 入 學 起 計 修 讀 所 有 科目之平均 分。每 一 科 目 於 GPA 所 佔 的 比 重 與 其 學 分（credits）成 正 比，而 同 學 畢 業 所 得 的 honour 將 會 以 cGPA 來 計 算。

香 港 大 學 各 學 院 的 評 分 準 則 各 有 不 同，因 此 各 學 院 以 至 學 系 之 間 的 成 績 差 距 極 大，有 些 學 院 過 三 是 等 閒，有 的 卻 難 如 登 天；同 樣 問 題 在 院 校 與 院 校 之 間 亦 有 發 生，每 一 間 院 校 所 採 用 的 GPA 制 度、評 分 準 則 亦 有 不 同，令 各 間 院 校 的 成 績 有 不 小 的 差 距。為 解 決 港 大 學 生 GPA 偏 低 的 問 題，校 方 在 2011 至 2012 年 度 開 始 實 施 新 的 評 分 制 度：

1. 拉 闊 GPA 的 數 值 範 圍，A+ 相 等 於 4.3 的 GPA。 2 . 合 格 與 不 合 格 的 科 目 都 會 計 算 至 cGPA，並 用 於 計 算 honour；若 之 後 再 報 讀 同 一 科 目，該 學 科 成 績 不 會 被 扣 減。

3 . 即 使 同 學 在 一 個 或 以 上 的 學 科 獲 得 不 合 格 的 成 績，亦 不 會 被 奪 去 取 得 F ir st Honour 的 資 格。 4 . 所 有 學 科 的 評 分 以 標 準 評 分 取 代 以 往 的 拉 curve。 The Grade Point Average (GPA) is a grading system adopted by universities for calculating students’ academic results (except for the BDS and MBBS curricula).

You will see two kinds of GPA when you check your grades. The semester GPA (sGPA) is the average score of courses you’ve studied in a semester, and the cumulative GPA (cGPA) is the average score of all courses you’ve taken since Year 1. GPA is a weighted average, and the weight of each course is proportional to the number of credits it bears. The university takes cGPA as a reference to classify honours for students.

Since every faculty in HKU has its own scoring criteria, there is a huge variation in GPA among students of different departments and faculties. In some faculties, it may be very easy for students to get a GPA of 3.0 or above; in other faculties, the same achievement may be much more difficult. The same problem exists on the university level as well—since each university adopts different GPA systems and scoring criteria, students’ GPA level differ greatly from university to university. To solve the problem of relatively low GPA of HKU students, the university adopted a new scoring system in 2011–2012: 1. The GPA scale was widened. An A+ is now equal to a grade point of 4.3.

2. Grades of all courses, whether pass or fail, will be calculated towards your cGPA. If you want to retake courses that you have failed, there will not be any penalty.

3. Students will not be disqualified from getting a First Class Honour even if they have failed one or more courses.

4. All grades now use standard referencing instead of normal referencing in their scoring systems.

核心 課 程

Common Core Courses 同 學 必 須 在 頭 三 年 的 課 程 裏 完 成 36 學 分 的 核 心 課 程，即 6 個 核 心 課 程 學 科。（修 讀 雙 學 位 課 程 的 同 學 則 只 須 完 成 24 學 分，即 4 個 核 心 課 程 學 科。）核 心 課 程 學 科 是 校 方 為了 實 行 其 六 大 教 學 目 標 而 推 出 的 新 學 科，共 分 為 4 個 範 疇，分 別 是 科 學 與 技 術（CCST）、人 文 學 科（CCHU）、環 球 議 題（CCGL）和 中 國 的 文 化、國 家 與 社 會 （CCCH）。根 據 校 方 規 定，為 確 保 同 學 有 多 元 化 的 學 習 機 會，同 學 必 須 涉 獵 每 個 範 疇，不 能 只 集 中 攻 讀 其 中 一 個。Common Core 的 比 重 佔 了 不 少，建 議 同 學 多 做 資 料 搜 集，問 問 師 兄 師 姐 的 意 見 才 去 選 科。若 想 了解 更 多，同 學 可 瀏 覽 以下 網 址：http://

(If you are studying a double degree, you only need to complete 4 Common Core courses, i.e. 24 credits.) These courses are designed to provide key common learning experience for students and to broaden their horizons beyond their chosen disciplinary fields of study. Common Core courses come in 4 categories: Scientific and Technological Literacy (CCST), Humanities (CCHU), Global Issues (CCGL), and China: Culture, State and Society (CCCH). Students are required to study courses from all 4 categories, and are not allowed to focus on one category alone. 正 式成 績 表

Official Transcript 同 學 若 想 報 intern、exchange 或 搵 工 等，可 能 需 要 成 績 表 供 參 考。校 方 一 般 只 會 在 Portal → Academic Records → View My Grades 公 佈 成 績，同 學 若 想 要 一 份 正 式 的 成 績 表，則 須 付 款 申 請。申 請 成 績 表 費 用 為 港 幣 40 元，需 時 十 個 工 作 天。 申 請 辦 法 有 三：

1. 親 身 前 往 學 務 辦 公 室（邵 逸 夫 樓 G-04 室）填 表 申 請，並 遞 交 身 份 證 影 印 本。 2 . 把 申 請 表 和 身 份 證 影 印 本 郵 寄 或 傳 真 至 學 務 辦 公 室。 3 . 於 Portal → Online Applications → Application for Transcript 申 請，並 以 信 用 卡 付 款。 Normally, academic results are only published at HKU Portal → Academic Records → View My Grades. If you need a proof of your academic results when you apply for internships or exchange programmes, you will have to apply for an official transcript. 的 學 院 制 度（Collegiate System），讓 同 學 透 過 不 同 的 舍 堂 活 動，學 習 團 隊 精 神、 領 導 才 能 及 承 擔，從 而 訓 練 未 來 社 會 領 袖。時 至 今 日，這 種 文化 仍 強 調 同 學 們 在 舍 堂 內 不 斷 學 習、有 所 得 著，進 而 達 至 個 人 成 長，希 望 藉 此 培 養 一 群 獨 立 自 主、思 想 清 晰、富 有 內 涵 的 大 學 生。 舍 堂 不 止 提 供 宿 位 給 學 生，也 提 供 了 讓 同 學 參 與 各 式 各 樣 活 動 的 空 間。除 了 有 各 種 sports teams 和 cultural teams，有 些 舍 堂 也 會 定 時 舉 辦 時 事 活 動，關 心 社 會， 也 會 有各 種 由 堂 友 自 發 及 組 織 的 娛 樂 活 動。同 學 亦 可 嘗 試 擔 當 活 動 OC（organising

H A L L” KU has a unique hall system. Instead of merely providing a place for students to live in, halls at HKU emphasise “hall education”: it is hoped that residents

will assume responsibilities and learn to become a better person as they face different challenges at hall, so that they will become men of integrity and independence in society. This vision, perhaps, takes its root from the Collegiate System of universities in England, where residents build up team spirit and learn to be future leaders.

There are a variety of activities you can join in a hall, such as interhall sports and cultural games, current affairs activities, and social functions. You may take up responsibilities at a hall by becoming an “OC” (member of an organising committee of an event), a team captain, or even an ex-co (executive committee member of a hall students’ association). Indeed, some people believe that halls nowadays are out of touch with concepts of individualism and freedom. While everyone may be a judge of that, it is the vision of halls to provide a place for residents to discover their potentials and cultivate a better personality.

It is still very popular among students to reside at a hall, and competition is very tense due to the limited number of spaces offered. If you are interested, you should get to know the cultures of different halls before you apply, and be alert to the procedure and deadlines of hall application.

康寧堂

Hornell Hall 康 寧 堂 是 香 港 大 學 第 一 間 男 性 非 住 宿 舍 堂 ， 取 名 自 已 故 校 長 William Hornell 。

2008 年 ， 康 寧 堂 搬 遷 到 方 樹 泉 文 娛 中 心 ， 為 堂 友 提 供 一 個 更 好 的 環 境 。 近 年 ， 康 寧堂積極舉辦各類活動，參與足球比賽及樂隊演出。此外，康寧堂也舉辦了日本 和 韓 國 文 化 交 流 團 ， 擴 闊 堂 友 眼 界 。 隨 著 康 寧 堂 校 友 會 於 2013 年 成 立 ， 舊 生 們 推 出師友計劃，傳承康寧精神。

Hornell Hall is the first male non-residential hall at HKU, named in honour of the deceased vice-chancellor, Sir William Hornell. In 2008, Hornell Hall was relocated to Fong Shu Chuen Amenities Centre to provide a better environment for Hornellians.

In recent years, Hornell Hall has been striving to offer a variety of activities for its members, providing opportunities to participate in football leagues and band performances. Cultural exchange tours to Japan and Korea were also organised with the aim of broadening the horizons of Hornellians. Following the establishment of the Hornell Hall Alumni Association in 2013, a mentorship program was launched to pass on the Hornell spirit.

Since her establishment in 1951, Lady Ho Tung Hall remains as the only female residential hall in the University of Hong Kong. Lady Ho Tung Hall is known for her background of rich history, yet it features a modern living environment as well as a great sea view. Not only is Lady Ho Tung Hall located ideally next to the MTR station, but it is also only a 3 minutes’ walk away from the main campus of the University of Hong Kong. The hall provides 404 residential places in total, with both single and double bedrooms. The hall colour is yellow, and the hall patron beast is the unicorn.

Lee Hysan Hall (formerly known as the Old Halls) is the only hall in HKU in which men and women reside on the same floor, and also the only hall which has its own lion-dancing team. Lee Hysan Hall inherits the “village” system from the Old Halls as the floor unit and emphasises the relationship among Hysanians. The hall color is violet, and the hall symbol is the tiger.

Morrison Hall was founded in 1913 and re-established in 2005. The representative colour is green. The hall is comprised of 150 undergraduates and 150 postgraduates residing on 14 floors. We strive to enhance the bonding among hallmates and strengthen their sense of belonging by organising a variety of hall activities. Different sports and cultural teams, interest groups, and standing committees allow our hallmates to develop their capabilities and realise their potentials. In addition, the Brotherhood and Mentorship Programmes provide Morrisonians with valuable opportunities to interact with our alumni and broaden their horizons through the exchange of insights and experience.

Swire Hall has the longest history among halls situated on campus for both male and female residents. It only takes a few minutes to reach public transport like the MTR, minibus, bus, and different kinds of restaurants. The structure of the building consists of an open snack area similar to a living room which makes hallmates feel at home whenever they enter their floor. The hall colour of Swire Hall is orange, which symbolises the passion Swirians possess towards their actions as well as the warmth among them.

Hall Activities 舍堂迎新

Hall Orientation 舍 堂 迎 新 歷 時 九 天 至 十 天 不 等，是 舍 堂 教 育 很 重 要 的 一 部 分。迎 新 時 期 的 經 歷 和 以 後 住 hall 的 心 態 頗 有 關 連，很 多 同 學 對 舍 堂 的 歸 屬 感 由 迎 新 時 期 時 已 開 始 建 立。舍 堂 迎 新 和 其 他 迎 新 營 不 同，更 講 求 同 學 為 集 體 付 出，透 過 反 覆 思 考，確 立 舍 堂 的 價 值 觀。當 中 與 別 不 同 的 經 歷，更 是 不 少人 畢 生 難 忘 的 回 憶。 Usually lasting for nine to ten days, hall orientation camps are a very important part of hall education. The camp marks the start of hall life, at which freshmen start building up their sense of belonging towards their hall. Unlike other orientation camps, hall orientation camps tend to emphasise more on contribution, reflection, and the establishment of hall values. For many people, hall orientation camps are memories that will last for a lifetime.

Dem Cheers Dem cheers 的 文化 不 是 港 大 獨 有，但 卻 是 港 大 舍 堂 文化 不 可 或 缺 的 一 部 份。Dem cheers 目 的 是 在 聯 舍 比 賽 中 激 勵 士 氣，增 加 堂 友 的 歸 屬 感。每 間 舍 堂 的 cheers 各 有 特 色，令人 留 下 深 刻 印 象。新 生 在 迎 新 時 期 亦 會 有 練 cheers 的 環 節，更 有 舍 堂 會 為 一 年 一 度 於 港 大 開 放 日 的 dem cheers 大 賽 緊 密 練 習。在 每 年 dem cheers 大 賽 中，新 生 們 便 要 代 表 各 自 的 舍 堂 參 加，一 展 身 手。 “Dem cheers”, which is short for the “demonstration” of cheers (i.e. cheering), is common among different universities in Hong Kong, and is an important part of hall culture in HKU. It helps build up team spirit, boost morale during competitions, and reinforce hallmates’ sense of belonging towards their hall. To get prepared for the annual Interhall Cheering Competition in October, some halls may include cheering practices in their orientation programmes. The Interhall Cheering Competition is a great opportunity for hall residents to show to the audience their unity and devotion.

聯 舍比賽

Interhall Competitions 舍 堂 與 舍 堂 之 間 有 很 多 不 同 類 型 的 運 動 及 文 化 比 賽。最 大 型 的 聯 舍 聯 賽 包 括 馬 來 人 盃、奧 瑪 玫 瑰 挑 戰 碗 及 鄭 耀 宗 盃；這 三 個 比 賽 的 總 冠 軍 分 別 稱 為「 盃 」、「 碗 」及 「樽」。馬 來 人 盃 和 奧 瑪 玫 瑰 挑 戰 碗 分 別 頒 予 男 子 和 女 子 體 育 競 賽 的 總 冠 軍，而 鄭 耀 宗 盃 則 頒 予 聯 舍 文化 比 賽 的 總 冠 軍。 為 舍 堂 出 一 分 力、讓 舍 堂 在 各 項 比 賽 中 贏 得 榮 譽，是 很 多 宿 生 日 以 計 夜 不 停 練 習 的 原 動 力。正 正 是 這 些 榮 譽，令 舍 堂 的 宿 生 團 結 一 致，努 力 不 懈 地 向 目 標 進 發。當 中 獲 得 的 不 單 是 榮 譽 和 滿 足 感，還 可 能 是 一 生 一 世 的 共 同 回 憶。 There are many interhall sports and cultural competitions in HKU. The Malayan Cup, the Olma Challenge Rose Bowl, and the Professor Y. C. Cheng Cup are some of the biggest events in HKU interhall competitions. The Malayan Cup and the Olma Challenge Rose Bowl are awarded to the male overall sports champion and the female overall sports champion respectively. The highest honour in interhall cultural competitions is the Prof. Y. C. Cheng Cup, which is awarded to the champion of interhall cultural competitions.

The glory that these bowls and cups bring are the motivation that drives many hall residents to practise day and night. The intensive practices not only help students improve their skills, but also build up bonding among teammates and create collective memories that accompany them for the rest of their lives.

高桌晚 宴

High Table Dinner 若 你 看 過 電 影《哈 利 波 特》，一 定 不 會 對 高 桌 晚 宴 感 到 陌 生。傳 統 上，港 大 舍 堂 的 宿 生 會 會 定 期 舉 行 高 桌 晚 宴，並 邀 請 特 別 嘉 賓 到 場 發 表 演 說；發 表 講 話 的 嘉 賓 通 常 會 是 社 會上 的 成 功 人 士，同 學 可 在 晚 宴 上 與 他 們 直 接 交 流，一 定 獲 益 良 多。 If you have watched the film Harry Potter, you must have been impressed by the High Table Dinners in the Great Hall. As a tradition, HKU halls also hold High Table Dinners regularly, during which successful persons are usually invited to be special guests. Hallmates can interact directly with them and learn from them through their speech during the High Table Dinner.

Other Residential Choices 龍華 街 住 宿學 院

Residential Colleges of Lung Wah 正 式 名 稱 為「 賽 馬 會 第 三 學 生 村」，是 香 港 大 學 為 迎 接 三 三 四 高 中 教 育 改 革 而 興 建 的 全 新 宿 舍。位 於 堅 尼 地 城 龍 華 街 9 號，主 要 提 供 住 宿，但 亦 強 調 學 生 參 與 社 會 服 務。四 幢 住 宿 學 院 分 別 為 信 興 學 院、志 新 學 院、立 之 學 院 及 日 新 學 院。 Officially named “Jockey Club Student Village III”, the Residential Colleges of Lung Wah were built in order to cater for the needs of a growing number of students under the new 3-3-4 curriculum. Situated at 9 Lung Wah Street, Kennedy Town, these residential colleges mainly provide accommodation but also emphasises social service. The names of the residential colleges are Shun Hing College, Chi Sun College, Lap-Chee College, and New College.

蒲 飛 路宿 舍

Pokfield Road Residences 位 於 堅 尼 地 城 蒲 飛 路 13–21 號 的 宿 舍，距 離 校 園 約 20 分 鐘 路 程。一 共 有 206 個 宿 位，但 只 收 非 本 地 研 究 生。 The Pokfield Road Residences are situated at 13–21 Pokfield Road and are 20 minutes’ walk away from the main campus. It accommodates a total of 206 non-local postgraduate students.

校 外大 學 租借 住 宿

Off-campus University-rented Accommodation CEDARS 在 學 校 附 近 租 借 的 單 位，裝 修 後 以 廉 價 租 借 予 同 學，每 單 位 由 4 個 同 學 共 用，每 人 約 須 付 每 月 港 幣 4,200 元 全 包。可 惜 宿 位 非 常 少，通 常 供 不 應 求。 These are flats near the main campus rented by CEDARS and provided to students with a cheap rent. Each flat is shared by 4 students. Each student needs to pay around HK$4,200 per month. However, the supply of these flats are usually insufficient to meet the demands.

校 方 管 治 學生宿 舍

University-administered Residences 校 方 另 提 供 兩 間 學 生 宿 舍，分 別 為 研 究 生 堂 和 何 善 衡 夫 人 堂。研 究 生 堂 位 於 本 部 校 園，提 供 200 個 宿 位 供 本 地 及 非 本 地 的 研 究 生；何 善 衡 夫 人 堂 位 於 沙 宣 道 6 號， 提 供 150 個 宿 位 供 醫 科 生。 The university provides two other residences for students, namely the Graduate House and the Madam S. H. Ho Residence for Medical Students. The Graduate House provides 200 places for local and non-local postgraduate students, and the Madam S. H. Ho Residence for Medical Students provides 150 places for medical students.

“Mini” Apartments 私 人 租 借 單 位 通 常 稱 為「mini」，通 常 同 學 會 3 至 4 個 人合 租 一 個 單 位。宿 費 比 較 昂 貴，可是 私 人 空 間 最 大。同 學 可 透 過 地 產 公 司 租 盤，亦 可 留 意 CEDARS 定 期 發 放 的 區 內 租 盤 資 訊。 Flats rented by students themselves are usually called “minis”. Besides, students can create an online profile for job applications using their “NETmatch” service (https://extranet.hku.hk/netmatch/). However, many employers now require pre-screening by the university due to keen competition in the job market. Aside from students’ GPA, performance in extracurricular activities are also considered by many companies nowadays.

Joint Institutions Job Information System (JIJIS) 同 學 亦 可 利 用 JIJIS 這 個 專 門 為 香 港 大 學 生 而 設 的 網 上 求 職 平台 找 兼 職。 同 學 只 須 到 http://www.jijis.org.hk 進 行 簡 單 註 冊，便 可 使 用 這 個 龐 大 的 資 料 庫。同 學 可 在 JIJIS 找 到 各 種 不 同 類 型 的 工 作，包 括 實 習、臨 時 工 及 應 屆 畢 業 生 工 作 等。 Students can also find part-time job through JIJIS, an online job-searching platform designed for university students in Hong Kong. Private Tutoring 時 薪 高、工作 時 間富 彈 性 的 私 人補 習，是 最 受 同 學 歡 迎 的 兼 職 之一。同 學可 在 NETjobs 中 的「 Private Tuition」一頁尋 找 私 人補 習工作。該 處 為 專 門 聘 請 港 大學 生 的 網 上平台，因 此 薪 金 較 高 之 餘，更 是 費 用 全 免。此 外，坊 間 亦 有很 多 網 站 提 供 補 習中 介 服 務，但 大 部分 都 會 抽 取 部分 薪 金 以作 行 政 費。 Private tutoring is one of the most popular part-time jobs among university students because of its flexibility and high hourly pay. NETjobs is one of the platforms for HKU students to hunt tuition jobs. The salary is usually higher than average, and no referral fee is required. There are many other online platforms and agencies that provide job matching, but most of them require job applicants to pay referral charges.

AN EX-CO” There are a variety of student societies at HKU. Becoming one of their executive committee members (an ex-co) is called “sheung jong” in Cantonese.

Most student bodies at HKU are affiliated to the Hong Kong University Students’ Union.

There are currently a total of around 130 union sub-organisations. Ex-cos of different sub-organisations are elected through elections of different forms and sizes. In particular, the union executives and campus media are elected by all full members of the Union. (All undergraduate students are union members under the compulsory membership system.)

The concept of an ex-co is perhaps a new one to you. While it is common for teachers in secondary schools to guide and assist students in preparing for their functions, ex-cos in a university are much more independent. They will have to bear the responsibility for the success or failure of their own events.

It is not at all easy to be an ex-co. Students who intend to become one will have to draft year plans and run for elections to gain the support of their members, in addition to attending a multitide of mock campaigns, campaigns, and annual general meetings to answer questions and enquiries from members.

You have to devote a lot of time and effort to be an ex-co, but it is a very rewarding experience. University is a place to hone your skills to become a better person. Through being an ex-co, you will be able to equip yourself with skills and knowledge that cannot be sought from textbooks and lectures, but are very much needed in modern society.

關 心 社會

Social Awareness

百 年 來，港 大 學 生 關 心 社 會 從 未 間 斷。由 孫 中山 推 動 革 命、二 戰 抗日，到中文 運 動、金 禧 事 件、政 制 改 革，以 至 近 期 的雨傘 革命、 副 校 長 任 命 風 波，港 大 學 生 無 不 參 與。 港 大 人 的 堅 持，令 當 政 者 無 法 迴 避。前 中 國 總 理 趙 紫 陽 便 在 公 開 信 中 回 覆 港 大 學 生 指：「你 們 所 說 的 民 主 治 港，是 理 所 當 然 的」。我 們 關 心 我 們 的 人 生，就 無 可 避 免 地 要 關 心 社 會 和 政 治。政 治、社 會、經 濟、人 生，本 來 就 糾 結 一 起。其 實 關 心 周 遭，亦 可 是 大 學 生 的 一 種 生 活，你 又 想 過 嗎？ 改 變，從 不 從 天 而 降。面 對 昏 亂 政 局、制 度 崩 壞，身為 大 學 生，我 們 唯 有 彼 此 連 繫、 凝 聚 力 量，共 創 美 好 的 社 會 前 景。為了 我 們 的 長 遠 人 生，為了 眾 人 的 福 祉，為了 完 成 前 人 未 竟 的 歷 史 任 務，港 大 學 生，又 豈 能 缺 席 ?

In the past century, HKU students have always played an important role in social movements: from the Xinhai Revolution, the Second Sino-Japanese War, to the Language Movement, the Golden Jubilee incident, political reform, and the recent Umbrella Movement. . .

Our perseverance has always been an elementary pressure to push the government to face citizens’ opinions. For example, Mr. Zhao Ziyang, who was Premier of the People’s Republic of China, wrote an open letter to HKU students saying that “the establishment of a democratic government in Hong Kong, as mentioned in your letter, is natural and right”. Politics, society, economics, and life are intertwined with one another. If we care about our own lives, there’s no way for us to ignore politics and society. As university students, we must connect ourselves to our society both locally and globally.

Changes never come out of nowhere. Facing a ridiculous and biased governance system, we, as the well-educated elites, must join hands and fight for a better future of our city. For your own future, and for the future of all, there is no reason for you not to be a part of this historical mission.

大 學 的 環 境 雖 然 令人 大 開 眼 界，但 同 學 還 須 面 向 世 界！ 同 學 可 透 過 校 方 提 供 的 HKU Worldwide Student Exchange Programme 申 請 到 海 外 交 流。計 劃 每 年 有 兩 次 公 開 接 受 同 學 申 請，詳 情 可 留 意 OISE（Office of Interna-

tional Student Exchange）的 網 站：http://www.als.hku.hk/admission/exchange/ 港 大 有 超 過 300 個 exchange par tners，而 每 一 間 大 學 對 同 學 的 要 求 也 不 同。基 本 上 要 求 cGPA 有 大 約 2.8 或 以 上；若 同 學 想 到 以 英 語 教 學 的 大 學 交 流，可 能 亦 須 滿 足 TOEFL（~550）和 IELTS（~6.5 ）的 要 求。若 同 學 在 經 濟 上 遇 到 困 難，影 響 到 交 流 的 計 劃，OISE 亦 有 提 供 獎 學 金，金 額 由 數 千 至 數 萬 不 等，視 乎 交 流 的 地 方。 如 同 學 不 想 遠 赴 海 外，亦 可 考 慮 參 加 港 大 不 同 學 院 或 學 系 之 間 的 交 流 計 劃。

HKU provides invaluable exchange opportunities for students to step out of their comfort zones and explore the world.

If you’re interested in going on exchange, you can apply through the HKU Worldwide Student Exchange Programme, which is open for nomination and application twice a year. For more details, please refer to the website of OISE (Office of International Student Exchange): http://www.als.hku.hk/admission/exchange/ HKU has more than 300 exchange partners, and each of them has different requirements for students. Basically, you’re expected to have a cGPA higher than ~2.8; if you’re applying for a university which uses English as a teaching medium, you may also be expected to achieve a TOEFL score of ~550 and an IELTS score of ~6.5. In case of financial difficulties, OISE also provides scholarships for students.

If you’re not interested in going abroad, you can also consider joining exchange programmes between faculties and departments within HKU.

Internships are golden opportunities for students to apply knowledge they’ve learnt in textbooks to real-life situations, and can even be milestones to a bright future career.

In HKU, many faculties include compulsory internships in the curriculum, which count for certain amounts of credits. Careers & Placement of CEDARS and JIJIS also provide internship opportunities for students. Currently, more and more people compete for jobs. Many big corporations start their internship recruitment in as early as October, so remember to stay alert to the most updated information!

For example, it’s a good idea to check your HKU Portal email account regularly. Emails sent by career@cedars.hku.hk titled “Daily Job & Career Notices on XXX” often provide valuable information about internships.

Searching can be done using the Dragon system. You can also renew and reserve books online.

參 考 文 獻 服 務 Literature Review 圖 書 館 設 有 參 考 文 獻 服 務，幫 助 同 學 快 速、有 效 地 找 尋 所 需 資 料。同 學 更 可 安 排 個 人 諮 詢。 Literature review service is available to help students gain access to academic materials.

影 印及 列印服 務 Photocopying & Printing 同 學 可 以 在 圖 書 館 三 樓 使 用 影 印 及 列 印 服 務，每 頁 收 費 三 毫。圖 書 館 更 設 有 文 件 掃 瞄 服 務，所 有 樓 層 亦 設 有 自 助 式 影 印 機。 Students may use the photocopying and printing service on 3/F in the library, which costs HK$0.3 per page. In addition, self-service photocopiers and scanners can also be found on each floor of the library.

電 腦 設 備 Computers 圖 書 館 三 樓 設 有 Technology Zone，共 有 80 部 電 腦 供 同 學 使 用。電 腦 設 有 不 同 軟 件， 如 Microsoft Office、Adobe Creative Suite 等，部 份 電 腦 更 設 有 掃 瞄 器。 A total of 80 computers are provided for students in the “Technology Zone” on 3/F. 特 藏 館 Special Collections 特 藏 館 位 於 主 圖 書 館 新 翼 一 樓，內 有 稀 有 書 藉、港 大 論 文、微 形 膠 卷 及香 港 資 料 等。 The Special Collections is located on 1/F of the New Wing of the Main Library. It houses rare books, theses, micro-films, and information about Hong Kong.

影 音及保留書 藉 館 AV & Reserve Collection 影 音 及 保 留 書 藉 館 除了 有 影 音 借 用 外，更 設 有 自 助 影 印 服 務 及 四 間 討 論 室 予 同 學 預 約 使 用。除了 學 術 需 要 外，亦 有 不 少 同 學 在 這 裏 借 看 電 影 渡 過「 天 地 堂 」之 間 的 空 檔。 Besides providing AV borrowing service, self-service photocopiers and 4 discussion rooms are also available in the AV & Reserve Collection. It’s a good place to kill time in between two lessons.

智 華 館 於 在 2012 年 落 成，位 於 百 周 年 校 園，是 同 學 溫 習 及 傾 project 的 好 地 方。 智 華 館 共 有 三 層，設 備 完 善，內 有 20 多 個 研 討 室，大 部 份 均 設 有 電 視，方 便 同 學 傾 project。館 內 亦 設 有學 習區、閱 讀 區、電 腦、影 印 機 等 設 施，更 有 Coffee Corner， 讓 同 學 在 忙 碌 的 學 習 中 竭 息。智 華 館 在 考 試 期 間 更 會 通 宵 開 放。 Situated in the Centennial Campus, the Chi Wah Learning Commons was built in 2012 to serve as a place for discussion, revision, and research.

The three-floor complex provides more than 20 seminar rooms, most of which are equipped with televisions to faciliate discussion. Furthermore, other facilities can be found such as a study zone, a reading zone, computers, and photocopiers. Students may also enjoy a cup of coffee in the Coffee Corner for a brief escape from the hectic work. In particular, Chi Wah Learning Commons opens overnight during examination period.

The Oval 是 一 個 供 師 生 交 流 的 公 共 空 間，也 是 同 學 溫 習、傾 project 的 好 地 方，全 天 候 24 小 時 開 放，更 設 有 三 台 影 印 機（兩 台 黑 白、一 台 彩 色）供 同 學 作 A4 和 A3 大 小 的 列 印 和 影 印。 影 印 機 服 務 採 用 限 額 系 統，同 學 須 使 用 學 生 證 才 能 影 印。每 年 校 方 都 會 入 100 個

printing credits（價 值 $30）到 同 學 的 戶 口 中，如 同 學 用 完 了 學 生 證 內 的 credits， 可 到 The Oval 門 口 影 印 機 旁 的 增 值 機 用 八 達 通 增 值。 注 意：雖 然 The Oval 和 裏 面 的 KB110 課 室 都 是 24 小 時 開 放，但 其 餘 課 室 均 會 在 晚 上 十 時 關 閉。 The Oval is a common area for students and staff to interact, and also a great place for students to study and discuss. There are a total of 3 photocopiers (2 B&W + 1 colour) that can print in A4 and A3 sizes.

The photocopiers operate under a quota system, and students need to use their student cards for printing. You’ll get 100 printing credits (worth HK$30) each year from the university, and if you’ve used all of them, you can use the add-value machine next to the main door of the Oval to add more quota into your account.

Note that although the Oval and the KB110 classroom inside open for 24 hours a day, all the other classrooms close at 10:00 p.m.

香 港 大 學 學 生 會 於 1912 年 10 月 6 日成 立，前 身為 香 港 大 學 聯 會。會員 包 括 全 體 同 學 及老 師，並 由 港 督 出 任 會 長。 1949 年 9 月，學 生 會 正 式 註 冊 為 獨 立 社 團，並 重 新 命 名 為 香 港 大 學 學 生 會，確 立 學 生 會 及 學 生 運 動 的 獨 立 自 主 的 基 礎，「 團 結 一 致，獨 立 自 主 」更 成 為日後 會 訓。雖 然 學 生 會 不 附 屬 於 大 學 校 方，但 多 年 來 雙 方 一 直 保 持 密 切 及平 等 的 合 作 關 係，共 同 為 港 大 作 出 貢 獻。 一 百 年 間，經 過 無 數 港 大 前 輩 的 默 默 耕 耘，隨 着 港 大 學 生 人 數 的 大 幅 增 長，港 大 學 生 會 在 大 學、學 界 以 及 社 會上 皆 有 相 當 的 影 響 力。今 天，學 生 會 已 發 展 成 一 個 龐 大 的 學 生 組 織，更 於 校 園 中 心 擁 有 一 座 多 功 能 的 學 生 會 大 樓。學 生 會 大 樓 設 有 多 種 設 施，如 多用 途 活 動 室、售 賣 文 具 和 大 學 紀 念 品 的 合 作 社、影 印 中 心、咖 啡 店、社 會 企 業 及 電 腦 店，服 務 超 過 一 萬 五 千 名 同 學。

The Hong Kong University Students’ Union was established on 6 October 1912 with a membership including all students and teachers and was formerly known as the Hong Kong University Union. At that time, the Governor took up the post of the President.

In September 1949, the Union was officially registered as an independent society, and was renamed as the Hong Kong University Students’ Union, this laying the basis of the Union’s independence from the University. “Unity with independence” later became the motto of the Union. Although the Union is no longer subordinate to the university, both sides maintain a close and equal co-operative relationship in contributing to HKU. Thanks to the efforts of past HKU students and a drastically increasing number of HKU students in the past century, the Union now exerts great influence on the university, Hong Kong students, and society at large. Over the years, the Union has developed into a huge student body with a multi-purpose Union Building on the main campus. There are various facilities in the Union Building, including multi-function rooms, a stationery store that also sells souvenirs, a photocopying centre, a coffee shop, social enterprises, and IT product shops, serving over 15,000 members.

Union Affairs 學 生 會 擁 有 相 當 充 裕 的 資 源 以 支 持 多 元 化 的 學 生 活 動。學 生 會 每 年 均 會 將 資 源 分 配 予 130 個 屬 會，當 中 包 括 院 會、學 術 屬 會、舍 堂 宿 生 會、體 育 屬 會（組 成 體 育 聯 會）、 文化 屬 會（組 成 文化 聯 會）、學 社 聯 會 屬 會（組 成 學 社 聯 會）及 校 園 傳 媒。各 個 屬 會 除了 為 同 學 提 供 不 同 活 動 及 福 利 外，亦 提 供 機 會 讓 同 學 認 識 志 同 道 合 的 朋 友，推 廣 興 趣 的 渠 道，增 添 校 園 生 活 的 色 彩。學 生 會 亦 會 爭 取 店 舖 優 惠，並 舉 辦 勁 過 週、手 提 電 腦 優 惠 計 劃 等 不 同 的 活 動，務 求 令 會員 享 受 更 多 福 利。 The Union provides resources to support student activities for 130 sub-organisations, which include faculty societies, academic societies, hall students’ associations, sports clubs (forming the Sports Association), cultural clubs (forming the Cultural Association), independent clubs (forming the Independent Clubs Association), and campus media. Apart from offering members various activities and welfare, union sub-organisations provide a channel for members to meet like-minded friends and promote their interests, creating a fruitful university life. The Union also organises welfare programmes such as the Superpass Week and the Notebook Ownership Programme, and searches for special offers and discounts for members.

University Affairs 學 生 會 一 直 努 力 不 懈 地 爭 取 校 政 民 主 化，令 同 學 的 聲 音 更 能 在 大 學 的 決 策 過 程 中 得 到 反 映。如 今，主 管 校 政 各 個 範 疇 的 大 學 管 治 委 員 會，由 校 長 遴 選、校 園 配 套、 學 制，到 膳 食、交 通、舍 堂 等 各 方 面 均 有 學 生 代 表。遇 到 不 合 理 或 倉 促 的 大 學 政 策

時，學 生 會 亦 會 代 表 同 學 向 校 方 反 映，捍 衛 同 學 權 益。 The Union has always fought for democracy in the university so that students’ voices can be reflected in the decision-making process of the university authorities. Currently, there are student representatives in university committees of nearly all aspects, such as the selection of the Vice-Chancellor, campus facilities, curriculum development, catering, transportation, and halls. When the university tries to implement unreasonable policies, the Union will reflect students’ voices to university authorities to safeguard students’ rights.

外務

External Affairs 關 心 社 會，是 港 大 學 生 會 一 直 以 來 的 傳 統，港 大 學 生 會 更 因 而 被 視 為 推 動 社 會 改 革 的 先 鋒。在 火 紅 年 代，港 大 學 生 積 極 參 與 社 會 事 務，不 斷 出 謀 獻 策；八十 年 代，對 香 港 前 途、民 主 進 程 及 八 九 民 運 更 表 達 極 大 關 注；九十 年 代，堅 持 在 港 大 校 園 內 豎 立 國 殤 之 柱；近 年 亦 就 普 選 行 政 長 官、平 反 六 四 等 議 題 通 過 全 民 投 票，更 自 行 舉 辦 了 六 四 晚 會。種 種 事 例，皆 顯 示 港 大 學 生 會 捍 衛「 獨 立 自 主、團 結 一 致 」，爭 取 香 港 民 主 發 展 的 精 神。 Caring about society is a tradition of HKUSU, which attributes to her image as a pioneer of social reform. In the 1970s, HKU students participated in social affairs proactively with vision; in the 1980s, they showed great concern over the future development and democratisation of Hong Kong as well as the Tiananmen Massacre in mainland China; In the 1990s, they insisted on placing the Pillar of Shame on HKU campus. In recent years, we initiated general pollings on issues including universal suffrage and the Tiananmen Massacre, and organised a June Fourth Commemoration. All these are examples of HKUSU safeguarding our motto of “Unity with Independence” while fighting for democracy in Hong Kong.

三 香 港大 學 學生會 文化 聯 會

Cultural Association, HKUSU 香 港 大 學 學 生 會 文 化 聯 會 是 一 個 由 十 六 個 文 化 屬 會 組 成 的 中 層 組 織，其 屬 會 一 直 以 來 致 力 為 學 生 會 會 員 呈 獻 多 元 化 文 化 表 演 活 動，例 如 文 學 創 作、文 藝 表 演、視 覺 藝 術 及 益 智 遊 戲 等。文化 聯 會 幹 事 會 致 力 於 推 廣 文化 活 動，以 及 代 表 文化 屬 會 的 利 益，並 每 年 舉 辦 文化 節，希 望令 學 生 會 會員 多 點 接 觸 校 內 文化 活 動。同 時，幹 事 會 亦 積 極 參 與 校 內 資 源 及 設 施 議 題 的 討 論，以 及 嘗 試 探 索 外 間 資 助，務 求 使 文化 屬 會 在 未 來 有 更 大 的 發 展 空 間。 Cultural Association, HKUSU is an intermediate organisation formed by 16 cultural clubs affiliated to HKUSU. Its clubs have always been committed to delivering a variety of cultural performances and activities including literary arts, performing arts, visual arts, and intellectual games to the members of the Union. The executive committee of the association are devoted to promoting cultural activities and representing the interests of the clubs, and organise Cultural Festival annually to expose members of the Union to cultural life. The executive committee also deals with issues such as cultural funding and facility booking, and explores external funding in order to broaden space for future development of cultural clubs and cultural activities in HKU.

Serving as the mediating body between clubs and HKUSU, ICA helps organise the Registration Day annually, and holds the ICA Carnival to promote fellow independent clubs.

ICA strives to bring togetherness to all independent clubs to reach new heights as well as to provide a fruitful university life to all students of HKU.

Sports Association, HKUSU 香 港 大 學 學 生 會 體 育 聯 會，前 身為 香 港 大 學 田 徑 聯 會，成 立 於 1912 年。體 育 聯 會 旨 在 向 學 生 會 會員 推 廣 體 育，為 體 育 學 會 爭 取 權 益 及作 為 學 生 會 和 體 育 學 會 的 溝 通 橋 樑。體 育 聯 會 由 中 央 幹 事 和 25 個 體 育 學 會 組 成，主 要 工 作 包 括 管 理 體 育 學 會 和 主 辦 內 外 體 育 活 動 等。體 育 聯 會 協 力 向 同 學 推 廣 各 類 型 運 動，包 括 田 徑、游 泳、球 類 運 動、武 術 及 各 種 新 式 的 運 動 等。 Sports Association, HKUSU was founded in 1912 and was formerly called the Hong Kong University Athletic Association. Its aim is to promote sports to members of the Union, to fight for the interests of sports clubs, and to act as a bridge between sports clubs and the Union. Comprised of a central executive committee and 25 sports clubs, SA’s main area of work includes administering the sports clubs and organising sports events both within and outside the university. SA has always been devoted to promoting various kinds of sports like athletics, swimming, ball games, martial arts, and other modern sports activities.
