《巴蘭欽〈珠寶〉》

Jewels is unique: a full-length, three-act plotless ballet that uses the music of three very different composers. Balanchine was inspired by the artistry of jewelry designer Claude Arpels, and chose music revealing the essence of each jewel. He explained: “Of course, I have always liked jewels; after all, I am an Oriental, from Georgia in the Caucasus. I like the color of gems, the beauty of stones, and it was wonderful to see how our costume workshop, under Karinska’s direction, came so close to the quality of real stones (which were of course too heavy for the dancers to wear!).”

Each section of the ballet is distinct in both music and mood. Emeralds, which Balanchine considered “an evocation of France — the France of elegance, comfort, dress, perfume,” recalls the 19 th century dances of the French Romantics. Rubies is crisp and witty, epitomizing the collaboration of Stravinsky and Balanchine. Diamonds recalls the order and grandeur of Imperial Russia and the Maryinsky Theater, where Balanchine was trained. Mary Clarke and Clement Crisp have written: “If the entire imperial Russian inheritance of ballet were lost, Diamonds would still tell us of its essence.”

George Balanchine is regarded as the foremost contemporary choreographer in the world of ballet. St Petersburg-born Balanchine had both the music and dance of Russia in his blood. Extensive musical training put him on equal grounds in communicating with great composers and enabled him to reduce orchestral scores on the piano, which is an invaluable aid in translating music into dance. Balanchine’s style has been described as neo-classical, de-emphasising plot in ballets and preferring to let “dance be the star of the show”. In his lifetime, he created 465 works, including Jewels as one of the renowned pieces.

Gabriel Fauré was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher and one of the foremost composers of his generation.

One of the most striking features of Fauré’s style was his fondness for daring harmonic progressions and sudden modulations, carried out with supreme elegance and a deceptive air of simplicity.

He excelled as a songwriter and piano and chamber music composer, writing over 100 songs, of which his 13 nocturnes, 13 barcarolles and five impromptus are best known. His refined and gentle musical style influenced many 20 th century composers and the course of modern French music.

Russian-born composer, pianist, and conductor Igor Stravinsky is widely considered one of the most important and influential composers of the 20 th century.

His compositional career was notable for its stylistic diversity.

Under Rimsky-Korsakov’s guidance, he produced a symphony in 1907 and cemented his international fame with three ballets commissioned

by Serge Diaghilev and performed by Ballets Russes in Paris during 1909-1913.

His musical style changed to neo-classicism in the 1920s, using traditional musical forms and themes from the ancient Classical world. In the 1950s, Stravinsky adapted the language of serialism and experimented with the twelve-tone technique in his compositions.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is widely considered as one of the most popular Russian composers in history. From a young age, he demonstrated an incredible skill for melodic expression of strong emotion which contributed to his creation of symphonies, concertos, operas, ballets and more. His masterpieces of theatre works include the opera Eugene Onegin and the ballets The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake.

The intensity of his music has rendered his works revered with generations of music lovers.

Paul Boos is an American dancer, ballet master, archivist and repetiteur. Selected by George Balanchine, he danced with New York City Ballet from 1977 until 1990. In addition to teaching internationally, he is part of a select group of repetiteurs sanctioned to set the ballets of George Balanchine, most notably for the Paris Opera, Bolshoi and Mariinsky theatre.

Diana White was born in Chicago, Illinois, US, started dancing at age four and joined the Lyric Opera of Chicago Ballet at age fourteen. When she was sixteen, George Balanchine offered her a School of American Ballet scholarship and invited her to join the New York City Ballet one year later. During her twenty years performing, she danced corps de ballet, soloist and principal roles in over fifty Balanchine ballets and in twenty by Jerome Robbins.

As a repetiteur, she has staged the works of both masters on major ballet companies and schools on six continents.

Ada Wong graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in theatre lighting design, she has a solid career as a Lighting Designer, Technical Coordinator and Project Manager for sophisticated concerts and shows in Asia. She has been invited by major Broadway musical companies directly to work as their technical and production supervisor during Asian tours including The Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, West Side Story, Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, The King and I and The Sound Of Music. Recently, she has extended her focus to prestigious events for high end luxury brands, milestones include being the China Unit Manager for Survivor S15, the ‘Chanel Mobile Art’ installation project in Hong Kong and Japan and the Official Opening Ceremony for Shanghai Expo 2010.

One of most influential costume designers of the 20th century, Barbara Karinska was known for her exquisite craftsmanship in opera, dance, Broadway and Hollywood and her lifelong creative partnership with George Balanchine. Born in Kharkiv, Russia Empire, Karinska first constructed costumes for Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo’s 1932 debut season. She worked with Balanchine’s company Ballet Society (later New York City Ballet) from its 1946 inception to the end of her career, collaborating on 75 ballets in 28 years. In 1948, she shared an Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Joan of Arc. Her innovations in costume design included a stronger, more flexible tutu.

Billy Chan graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a major in theatre lighting design. Since 1997, Chan has collaborated with ELDT, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Dionysus Contemporary Theatre, choreographer Duncan Macfarland and Taiyuan Dance Troupe, Macao Cultural Centre and Trinity Theatre, in addition to pop concerts. He won Best Stage Art of the Year (Lighting Design) at the 2017 Shanghai Jing’an Modern Drama Valley One Drama Awards. In April 2019, he was awarded Best Lighting Design at the Hong Kong Drama Awards for Chung Ying Theatre Company’s Rashomon and Outstanding Lighting Design at the Hong Kong Dance Awards for Hong Kong Dance Company’s Waiting Heart.

王奕慎畢業於香港演藝學院舞台燈 光設計系。她在項目管理、技術統籌 和燈光設計方面的具有紮實的專業 知識和豐富的經驗，工作地域涉及亞 洲各地。她曾直接受聘於各主要百 老匯音樂劇公司，被邀請在其亞洲 巡演中擔任技術和製作監督工作， 參與的演出包括《歌聲魅影》 、 《獅子 王》 、 《西城故事》 、 《孤星淚》 、 《西貢 小姐》 、 《國王與我》和《仙樂飄飄處 處聞》等最著名的音樂劇。近年她亦 專注製作高端品牌項目，較重要的 包括於《倖存者S15》出任中國區製 作經理、 《香奈兒移動藝術展》香港 和日本的項目統籌及於《2 010 年上 海世博會的正式開幕式》出任技術 管理工作。

凱 林 斯 卡 是2 0 世 紀 最有影 響力的 服裝設 計師之一。她因著在歌 劇、 舞蹈、百老匯和荷里活電 影中展現 的 精 湛 技藝，以 及 與喬治．巴蘭欽 的終身創作合作關係而聞名。凱林 斯卡出生於沙 俄哈爾科夫，最初為 蒙地卡羅 俄國芭蕾舞團於19 3 2 年 的 首個 舞 季 製 作 服 裝。自1 9 4 6 年 巴蘭欽創立芭蕾舞協會舞團（紐約 市 芭 蕾舞團的前身）起，凱 林 斯 卡 便在舞團工作至退休。在28 年間， 她 與巴 蘭 欽 合 作了7 5 齣 芭 蕾 舞 作 品。1 9 4 8 年，她 憑 電 影《 聖 女 貞 德》獲得奧斯卡最佳服裝設計獎。 她對服裝設計的革新則包括把芭蕾 舞裙變得更堅靭及靈活。

陳焯華

陳焯華1996年畢業於香港演藝學院， 主修劇場燈光設計。自1997年起與非 常林奕華長期合作，又經常參與香港 藝術節、神戲劇場、編舞家麥克法蘭、 太原舞蹈團、澳門文化中心、三角關係 等的製作；亦曾為不同演唱會設計燈 光。陳氏於2017年憑《紅樓夢》獲上 海·靜安現代戲劇谷壹戲劇大賞年度 最佳舞台美術類（燈光設計） 。2019 年憑中英劇團《羅生門》獲第28屆香 港舞台劇獎最佳燈光設計及憑香港 舞蹈團《紫玉成煙》獲香港舞蹈年 獎2019傑出燈光設計。 www.maybeLXcanhelp.net

Locally born Rachel Cheung was the first Hong Kong pianist to be a Van Cliburn International Piano Competition finalist in 2017, earning both critical acclaim and the Audience Award for ‘outstandingly lyrical’ playing that showed ‘nobility in her interpretation’. Other accolades include prizes in the 2009 Leeds, 2010 Chopin and 2012 Geneva International Piano Competitions. Cheung frequently performs both locally and internationally. Highlights of her 2018/19 season include recitals in the US, Mexico, Italy, Poland, the UK, Germany and Japan, and creative collaborations with Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra and Asian Youth Orchestra, among others.

Chen Zhiyao graduated from Beijing Dance Academy in 2015 and joined HKB the same year. She was named Soloist in 2018 and was promoted to Principal Dancer in 2019. With HKB, Chen has danced many principal roles such as Odette/ Odile in John Meehan’s Swan Lake, Giselle in Septime Webre and Charla Genn’s Giselle, Ballerina, Ballerina in Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker, Kitri in Nina Ananiashvili’s Don Quixote, Gulnare in Anna-Marie Holmes’ Le Corsaire, Alice and Eaglet in Webre’s ALICE (in wonderland), Wendy Darling and Princess Tiger Lily in Webre’s Peter Pan and Myrtle Wilson in Webre’s The Great Gatsby, among others. Chen won Outstanding Performance by a Female Dancer at the 2017 and 2019 Hong Kong Dance Awards.

Ye Feifei trained at Xun Yan Ballet School in Shenyang and Goh Ballet Academy in Canada.

She joined Hong Kong Ballet in 2006, was named Coryphée in 2009 and became Soloist in 2010. She left HKB in 2014 and returned as Principal Dancer in 2016. With HKB, Ye has danced many principal roles, including Odette/Odile in John Meehan’s Swan Lake, Giselle in Septime Webre and Charla Genn’s Giselle, Ballerina in Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker, Medora and Gulnare in Anna-Marie Holmes’ Le Corsaire and Juliet in Rudi van Dantzig’s Romeo and Juliet among others. She won a silver medal at the Genée International Ballet Competition and a bronze medal at the Varna International Ballet Competition in 2006.

Wang won gold medals at the 25th Varna International Ballet Competition in 2012 and the 4th Korea International Ballet competition in 2011.

Yang Ruiqi studied at John Cranko School in Stuttgart with a full Prix de Lausanne scholarship. After graduating in 2012, she joined Stuttgart Ballet. She came to Hong Kong Ballet as a Coryphée in 2016 and became Soloist in 2020.

With HKB, Yang has performed principal and featured roles such as Alice in Septime Webre’s ALICE (in Wonderland), Peasant Pas de Deux and Moyna in Webre and Charla Genn’s Giselle, Spanish Doll and French Doll in Terence Kohler's The Nutcracker, Mercedes in Nina Ananiashvili’s Don Quixote, Odalesques in Anna-Marie Holmes’ Le Corsaire, Olympe in Val Caniparoli’s Lady of the Camellias, Wendy Darling and First Twin in Webre’s Peter Pan and Jordan Baker in Webre’s The Great Gatsby, among others. Jessica Burrows graduated from Canada's National Ballet School and danced with The National Ballet of Canada before joining Hong Kong Ballet in 2010. She was promoted to Coryphée in 2015, joined Boston Ballet in 2017 and returned to HKB in 2019. Burrows has danced the featured roles in John Meehan’s Swan Lake, Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker, Nina Ananiashvili’s Don Quixote, Val Caniparoli’s Lady of the Camellias, Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker, William Forsythe’s Pas Parts and George Balanchine’s Serenade, to name a few. Her choreographic works include Swan in the Abyss (2014, co-choreographed with Sarah Yeung), Variation (2018) and Variation in Sneakers (2019).

Eunsil Kim trained at John Cranko School in Stuttgart on scholarship and joined Ballet National Sodre Uruguay in 2017. She joined Hong Kong Ballet in 2019 as a Coryphée.

Her notable HKB roles include Ballerina in Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker and Tinkerbell in Septime Webre’s Peter Pan, and she danced in John Meehan’s Swan Lake. Prior to joining the Company, Kim performed as Juliet in Kenneth Macmillan’s Romeo and Juliet and Medora in Anna-Marie Holmes’ Le Corsaire, and had featured roles in George Balanchine’s Theme and Variations.

Amber Lewis trained at Ecole Studios and The Washington School of Ballet. While in school, she was a 2008 Youth America Grand Prix finalist. She danced with The Washington Ballet and Ballet Arizona before joining Hong Kong Ballet in 2019 as a Coryphée. With HKB, Lewis has danced the principal and featured roles of Kitri in Nina Ananiashvili’s Don Quixote, Clara in Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker and Cinderella in Septime Webre’s Ballet Classics for Children: Cinderella. Lewis has also danced leading and featured roles in works by George Balanchine, Alexei Ratmansky, Anna-Marie Holmes, Twyla Tharp, Edwaard Liang, Justin Peck and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, among others.

Reina Sawai trained in Japan, Hong Kong and the Philippines and received a one-year scholarship in Portugal. She danced with National Ballet of Portugal, Vienna State Ballet and Boston Ballet before joining Hong Kong Ballet as a Coryphée in 2019. With HKB, Sawai has danced the featured roles of Big Swan in John Meehan’s Swan Lake, Egyptian Doll and French Doll in Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker and Second Twin in Septime Webre’s Peter Pan and more. Sawai was a semi-finalist at the 2008 Prix de Lausanne and a bronze medalist at the 2009 TanzOlymp in Berlin.

Nana Sakai trained at the Royal Ballet Upper School and joined Hong Kong Ballet in 2016. With HKB, Sakai has danced the featured roles of Clara and Italian Doll in Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker and Odalesques in Anna-Marie Holmes’ Le Corsaire and performed in John Meehan’s Swan Lake, Nina Ananiashvili’s Don Quixote, Ronald Hynd's Coppélia, Val Caniparoli’s Lady of the Camellias, Septime Webre’s The Great Gatsby and Alexei Ratmansky’s Le Carnaval des Animaux, among others. Sakai was a finalist at the Youth America Grand Prix New York finals in 2012.

Zhang Xuening trained at Shenyang Conservatory of Music and joined Guangzhou Ballet in 2009. In 2011, she continued her training at Beijing Dance Academy, graduated in 2015 and joined Hong Kong Ballet the same year. With HKB, she has danced featured roles like Big Swan in John Meehan’s Swan Lake, Spanish Doll and Russian Doll in Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker, Beauty Fairy in Cynthia Harvey’s The Sleeping Beauty, Bolero and Variation in Nina Ananiashvili’s Don Quixote, Lead Pirate Woman and Odalesques in Anna-Marie Holmes’ Le Corsaire and Liza the Maid and Curly in Septime Webre’s Peter Pan, among others.

Zhang won third prize in the Female Junior Division Group at the 2009 Taoli Cup Dance Competition.

His recent choreographic works include Qián Kūn (2019), Missing Out (2018) and The Bow (2017). Li won second prize at the 2009 Taoli Cup Dance Competition.

Shen Jie trained at Zhejiang Vocational Academy of Art, Guangzhou Dance School and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He joined HKB in 2007, was named Soloist in 2013 and became Principal Dancer in 2016. With HKB, Shen has danced numerous principal and featured roles such as Albrecht in Septime Webre and Charla Genn’s Giselle, Fritz and Prince in Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker, Basilio in Nina Ananiashvili’s Don Quixote, Ali and Birbanto in Anna-Marie Holmes’ Le Corsaire and Pinocchio in Pär Isberg’s Pinocchio, among others. Shen won Outstanding Performance by a Male Dancer at the 2016 and 2019 Hong Kong Dance Awards and was nominated for the Prix Benois de la Danse in 2014.

Born in Sorocaba, Brazil, Daniel Camargo trained at John Cranko Ballet School, joined Stuttgart Ballet upon graduation and became a Principal Dancer in 2013. He guest performed at Dutch National Ballet and joined the company in 2016. An acclaimed guest artist, Camargo has danced with numerous companies worldwide such as The Royal Ballet, the Mariinsky Ballet, The Australian Ballet and The Tokyo Ballet. Wei Wei graduated from Shenyang Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s degree in dance and joined Hong Kong Ballet in 2003.

He was named Soloist in 2007 and became Principal Dancer in 2013.

With HKB, he danced many principal roles including Prince Siegfried in John Meehan’s Swan Lake, Albrecht in John Meehan and Lin Mei-fang’s and Septime Webre and Charla Genn’s Giselle, Prince Désiré and Carabosse in Cynthia Harvey’s The Sleeping Beauty, Prince in Stephen Jefferies’ and Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker and Basilio in Nina Ananiashvili’s Don Quixote, among others. Wei guest performed in the International Ballet Gala, Malaysia in 2012 and Queensland Ballet’s 50th Anniversary International Gala in Brisbane, Australia in 2010. Garry Corpuz danced with Ballet Philippines in 2011, he joined HKB in 2017, became Coryphée in 2018 and was named Soloist in 2020. With HKB, Corpuz has danced many featured roles including Von Rothbart in John Meehan’s Swan Lake, Rat King, Egyptian Doll and Russian Doll in Terence Kohler’s The Nutracker, Lankendem in Anna-Marie Holmes’ Le Corsaire, Espada in Nina Ananashvili’s Don Quixote, Cheshire Cat in Septime Webre’s ALICE (in wonderland), Captain Hook in Webre’s Peter Pan, Tom Buchanan in Webre’s The Great Gatsby and many more. He also performed in works by Christopher Wheeldon, Alexei Ratmansky, Trey McIntyre, Justin Peck, among others.

A graduate of The Washington School of Ballet, Albert Gordon joined Hong Kong Ballet in 2020 as a Soloist. His principal roles include Prince Désiré and Bluebird in Angel Corella’s The Sleeping Beauty, Basilio in Corella’s Don Quixote, Peasant Pas de Deux in Corella’s Giselle, Mercutio in Kenneth Macmillan’s Romeo and Juliet, and Espada in Nina Ananashvili’s Don Quixote.

Gordon was also featured in works by George Balanchine, Jiri Kylian, Christopher Wheeldon, John Neumeier, Mikko Nissinen, Alexander Ekman, Jorma Elo, Andrea Miller and many more.

He won a gold medal at the 2012 Boston International Ballet and received the 2012 Princess Grace Award: Dance.

Ma Renjie trained at Hangzhou Art School and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He began his career at Guangzhou Ballet, joined the Ballet of the Opéra national du Rhin in 2007 and was named soloist in 2015.

Ma joined Hong Kong Ballet in 2019 as a Soloist. With HKB, he has danced featured roles, including Fritz in Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker, Sancho Panzo in Nina Ananashvili’s Don Quixote and Noodler in Septime Webre’s Peter Pan. He was also featured in Corey Baker’s Lying Together. Prior to joining HKB, Ma has performed works by Maurice Béjart, William Forsythe, Heinz Spoerli, Alexander Ekman, Benjamin Millepied, among others.

Jackson Dwyer trained at Canada’s National Ballet School and John Cranko School in Stuttgart. He danced with The National Ballet of Canada and Ballet Arizona before joining Hong Kong Ballet in 2019 as a Coryphée. With HKB, Dwyer has danced many featured roles such as Neapolitan and Pas de Quatre in John Meehan’s Swan Lake, Italian Doll in Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker, Nibs and Cecco in Septime Webre’s Peter Pan. Prior to HKB, he also danced in works

by George Balanchine, John Neumeier, Alexei Ratmansky and Christopher Wheeldon. Dwyer recieved the Lawrence Haskett Scholarship and the Peter Dwyer Award in 2009 and was a 2010 Young Arts National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts winner.

Jonathan Spigner trained at South Carolina Governor’s School of Arts and Humanities and at Académie Princesse Grace in Monte Carlo.

He joined HKB in 2010 and was named Coryphée in 2014. Spigner assumed the additional role of Pilates Instructor in 2017. With HKB, he was featured as Fritz and Spanish Doll in Terence Kohler’s The Nutcracker, Birbanto in Anna-Marie Holmes’ Le Corsaire, Espada in Nina Ananashvili’s Don Quixote and White Rabbit and Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum in Septime Webre’s ALICE (in wonderland), among others. His recent choreographic works include Monolith (2018), BubbleGoose (2017), Passion Flower (2016) and many more. Spigner received awards from Youth America Grand Prix regional competitions in 2004, 2008 and 2009.

City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong (CCOHK) was founded in 1999 by Leanne Nicholls and is one of Asia’s leading chamber orchestras. The orchestra has performed extensively with many world class artists including Sir Neville Marriner, Sir James Galway, Sarah Chang, Julian Lloyd Webber, Branford Marsalis, Philippe Entremont, Sir Karl Jenkins and The King’s Singers. In addition to collaborations with Hong Kong Ballet, Le French May Arts Festival, The World Harp Congress, the Hong Kong International Piano Competition and RTHK Radio 4, CCOHK has been invited to perform on tour in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Taipei and Italy. CCOHK’s programmes for young audiences include The Snowman & The Bear, Magnificent Mozart, Vivaldi Unmasked, The Star Bach and the musical Bug Symphony which was awarded the Public Choice Award at the YAMawards in Portugual 2017. Robert Reimer is one of the most versatile conductors of his generation. From opera to ballet and from baroque to contemporary music, he has conducted at major opera houses such as Bavarian S tate Opera, Berlin State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Royal Copenhagen Opera, Finnish National Opera, Liceu Opera Barcelona, Copenhagen Opera Festival and Stuttgart State Opera. Additionally, he has been featured in European CD, DVD, radio and television productions since 2013. 舞 團 擁 有 接 近 5 0 位 來自世界 不 同 地方的 精 英，包括來自香港、中國 內 地、亞 洲 地 區、澳 洲、新 西 蘭、 歐洲和北美等地，近年贏得海內外 各方支持和肯定。舞團劇目涵蓋多 齣由安娜 妮 亞雪翡莉、哈 維、賀 姆 斯、米翰文等知名藝術家重製的古 典瑰寶、特別為舞團編創的長篇芭 蕾舞，以 及屢獲殊榮的青少年系列 製作。舞團亦不時演出現今舞壇星 級 編舞家如羅 曼 斯基、惠爾頓、佩 克、季利安、杜亞陶、麥英泰爾及奧 喬亞等的作品，以及舞團駐團編舞 家胡頌 威的新作。

With almost 50 tours to 11 countries, HKB most recently toured throughout Europe in 2018, across Mainland China in 2019 and in recent seasons to the US, at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and in New York at the Joyce Theatre and the renowned Fall for Dance Festival. In addition to its performances on stage at home and abroad, HKB maintains a full schedule of community engagement initiatives throughout Hong Kong to ensure the art of ballet is accessible to all.

舞團曾踏足11個國家，進行近50次 巡迴演出，當中包括於2018年到訪 歐洲、2019年巡 迴中國內地，近 期 又於美國雅各之枕舞蹈節、紐約喬 伊斯劇院及享負盛名的秋季舞蹈藝 術節等亮相。除本地及海外的舞台 演出外，舞團亦全力推行全港性的 社區項目，務求將芭蕾舞藝術帶給 所有普羅大眾。

Septime Webre is an internationally recognised ballet director, choreographer, educator and advocate.

He joined Hong Kong Ballet as its Artistic Director in July 2017 after 17 years as Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet in Washington DC, US from 1999-2016. Previously he served as Artistic Director of the American Repertory Ballet, based in Princeton, New Jersey, US from 1993-1999. In addition, Webre has served as the Artistic Director of Halcyon, a Washington DC-based foundation, launching an annual international Festival for Creativity in Washington DC in June 2018.

During Webre’s tenure at The Washington Ballet, the institution’s budget grew by 500%, and it enjoyed unprecedented advances in the scope and quality of its work on stage, in the size and reach of its professional school and in the development of several far-reaching community engagement programmes that he founded. Webre also launched an array of artistic initiatives, including The American Experience, which developed great works of literature like The Great Gatsby and Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises into full-length ballets.

As a choreographer, Webre’s works appear in the repertoires of ballet companies globally, including Pacific Northwest Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Colorado Ballet, Ballet West, Atlanta Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Ballet Austin, Ballet Memphis, Milwaukee Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico, and many others, and he has worked frequently in theatre as well as opera.

His new work for HKB, Romeo+Juliet, set in 1960s Hong Kong, will have its world premiere in June 2021. As a dancer, Webre was featured in solo and principal roles from the classical repertoire as well as in contemporary works by choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor and Merce Cunningham.

He has served on the board of Dance/USA and on the juries of a number of international ballet competitions, including those in Varna, Bulgaria, Istanbul, Cape Town, New York and Seoul. Weber’s work has received numerous honors, grants and awards. He holds a degree in History/Pre-Law from the University of Texas at Austin and is the seventh son in a large, boisterous Cuban-American family.

衛承天是國際著名芭蕾舞團總監、編 舞家、教育家及倡導者。他於19 9 9 年至2016年17年間出任華盛頓芭蕾 舞團藝術總監、1993年至1999年任 美國新澤西普林斯頓美國劇目芭蕾 舞團藝術總監，並於2017年7月加入 香港芭蕾舞團擔任藝術總監。他曾 是美國華盛頓一基金會Halcyon的 藝術總監，2 018 年6月於當地推出 一個每年一度的國際創意藝術節。 衛承天在任華盛頓芭蕾舞團期間，舞 團預算大增50 0%，並在舞台製作的 規模和質素、專業舞蹈學校的學生 和參與者人 數，以 及由他創立又 影 響深遠的社區拓展項目等多個範疇 上獲得前所未有的提升。他又推出 了多個嶄新的藝術計劃，例如把美 國 偉 大 文學 作品《 大亨小 傳 》、海 明威的《太陽照常升起》等搬演成 長篇芭蕾舞劇的“美國體驗”系列。 作為編舞家，衛承天的作品可見於 全球各大芭蕾舞團，包括太平洋西 北芭蕾舞團、加拿大蒙特利爾大芭 蕾舞團、科羅拉多芭蕾舞團、西部芭 蕾舞團、亞特蘭大芭蕾舞團、辛辛那 提芭蕾舞團、奧斯汀芭蕾舞團、曼非 斯芭蕾舞團、密爾沃基芭蕾舞團、堪 薩斯市立芭蕾舞團及波多黎各音樂 會芭蕾舞團等；他亦經常參與劇場和 歌劇製作。他為香港芭蕾舞團全新創 作、以19 6 0 年代香港作背景的《羅 密歐+茱麗葉》，將在今年六月世界 首演。作為一位舞者，衛承天曾擔任 多齣古典舞劇的主角及獨舞，並曾出 演夏普、泰勒及肯寧漢等編舞家的當 代作品。他曾任“舞蹈/美國”的董事 局成員，也曾任瓦爾納、保加利亞、 伊斯坦堡、開羅、紐約、首爾等地多 個國際芭蕾舞比賽的評審。其作品更 獲得多項榮譽、資助及獎項。他持有 奧 斯汀德薩 斯大學的歷史 /法律學 士學位，是一個熱鬧的古巴裔美國 大家庭中排行第七的兒子。 33
