Partner Parishes Welcome New Music Director

Please join us as we welcome our new Partner Parishes Music Director, Aaron Gray. Aaron, who grew up in Latrobe and now resides in Greensburg, is a graduate of Saint Vincent College with a degree in piano performance. Aaron comes to us from his most recent position as the Music Director and Principal Organist at Holy Family Church in Latrobe. He has held numerous positions at Saint Vincent College, including rehearsal pianist for the music department and assistant music director for departmental musicals. He also has served as music director at Ligonier Valley High School and Jeanette High School and at several theaters in the Latrobe and Ligonier areas and as the organist/ music director at various churches. In addition, Aaron serves as accompanist at choral festivals and teaches private piano lessons. Welcome, Aaron!

The celebration of the Body and Blood of Christ, historically called Corpus Christi, was established as a celebration of the Lord’s institution of the Holy Eucharist.

It is truly a profound day for us believers, as we celebrate the real Presence of Jesus on the altar of sacrifice.

We participate each Sunday in a memorial of Jesus’ institution of the Blessed Sacrament with his Apostles at the Last Supper. This is true of every Mass for which we gather to remember Jesus’ Eucharistic offering.

During the offertory of the Mass, we should be conscious that, as the members of our faith community bring forward the wine and bread, each of us is making our individual offering to the Lord. We are to offer our very self to our Heavenly Father with Jesus’ perfect sacrifice that we will commemorate.

The members of our faith community come forward symbolically with all our gifts. The bread and wine represent the gifts from each of us. They are to be the offering of our very lives to Christ.

By participating in the Liturgy, we are in effect saying: Lord, I offer you my self-will and I commit to live your will for me all my life. As our gifts are brought forward, physically by the gift bearers, and as a spiritual offering from our hearts, they are placed on the altar of sacrifice. We then begin the prayers of the Liturgy of the Eucharistic. In the prayers, we ask that each of our gifts will be perfected by the presence of the Holy Spirit, that they become a perfect offering as is the unblemished offering of the Lamb of God. As we know, Jesus himself is that true, perfect offering to the Father.

He, through the action of the Holy Spirit, will take our humble, simple offerings that we so often fail to live up to, and perfect them. As we share in this meal, Jesus enables us to grow more fully in relationship with him and to live out our lives in him as we were created to do.

The next couple of paragraphs are a brief review of salvation history. From the Old and New Testament we see many foreshadowings of God’s plan and, in Jesus, the ultimate, perfect offering to our Heavenly Father.

We will start with our reading from the Book of Exodus. The passage begins at the point where Moses had led the Israelites out of Egypt. They were in the desert at the base of Mount Sinai. We

must also recall that the night before they left Egypt, they were instructed to take a lamb, offer it up as a sacrifice, eat the meat, and take the blood of the sacrificed animal and put it on the doorposts and the lintel of their homes in order that they might be protected from the avenging angel. The angel of death, as we remember from Scripture, had gone through the land and struck down the firstborn of every family of the Egyptians and of every animal in the kingdom.

However, the Israelites had been protected by the blood of the lamb.

They were now at the base of Mount Sinai. Moses has explained to them the Commandments that he received from God. He has begun to teach the Mosaic Code which was to be the interpretation and application of the Commandments: how the people were to live their daily lives. After offering the sacrifice of bulls and goats, Moses took the blood of the sacrificed animals and sprinkled it on the altar. He then read the Book of the Covenant and asked the people to assent to all written in the book. The people responded and said they would heed all that the Lord had asked them to do. Moses then took the remaining blood of the sacrificed animals and sprinkled it on the people. He said, "This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you in accordance with these words of his."

So, their agreement with the Lord was sealed in the blood of the sacrificed animals.

You and I know from our second reading today, the Letter to the Hebrews, that the blood of the offered goats and bullocks was really symbolic. It was a foretaste, the foreshadowing of what would come, what would be the perfect sacrifice. Indeed, we hear today from Hebrews that: If the blood of goats and bulls…can sanctify those who are defiled so that their flesh is cleansed, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God… For this reason, he is the mediator of the new covenant…

-- Hebrews 9:13-15 The Israelites, having been protected by the blood of the lamb that was offered, were sealed in the Sinai covenant by the blood of the animals that had been sacrificed.

Unfortunately, they failed to live up to the terms of that covenant. They would fall, they would have false gods, they would live immorally. They did not care for the dispossessed, the widow, the orphan and the alien. As a result, God sent his only

Son; Jesus came in human vesture and offered himself up, as was referenced today in Mark’s Gospel: Jesus’ body broken, his blood poured out, so that we might have life in him.

This new covenant does not have 613 rules like the Mosaic Code; it is the “covenant of love,” the love that is so profoundly and clearly demonstrated by Our Lord's offering of himself on the altar of the Cross. The Old Testament’s sprinkling of the blood of the sacrificed bulls and goats is perfected by the sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ from the altar of the Cross. It is sprinkled upon us by Jesus’ offering. We are cleansed and purified and united to him through this unfathomable gift. The sacrifices of old foreshadowing Christ were not able to accomplish what was intended. But Jesus, through the perfect offering of himself, enables us to live our lives in relationship with him.

The covenant of love ensures, in spite of our weakness and human failing, that we will be restored continually by Jesus’ gift.

His love is made present in his very body and blood during each Mass on the altar of sacrifice. It's not a bloody sacrifice; it's a re-presentation of his offering on Calvary. It's so important for us to recall that, prior to his death, from John's Gospel, in the Bread of Life Discourse, Jesus said six times, "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him, and I will raise him on the last day."

What more profound promise do we have?

What more powerful commitment could we have from our God? His very body and blood, an offering on our behalf, inviting us to take part in that offering by sharing at the Eucharistic Table, in that meal as a faith community. The promise Jesus made of eternal life did not in any way equivocate; it will be fulfilled if we believe in him, follow his Commandments and partake of the Bread of Life.

This love so profound, so broad, so deep, is what brings us every week to partake in this meal, to share as a family of faith. The Lord Jesus' commitment to us, eternally made, a heavenly promise that is accomplished if we fulfill our commitments. We are made new and whole, nurtured, nourished, strengthened, enabled to go forth, formed each Sunday more fully into the person of Jesus Christ. What an unspeakable gift: a gift that is not fully comprehended, but one in which we believe, and respond to by saying, Amen!

These plans are designed to address the tremendous need for space that will open doors to new ministries and services for everyone in our parish.
