Dearly Beloved Parishioners,

I remember the story of my seminary days. In the seminary, we are evaluated every semester if we are still worthy to go on with our priestly formation in the next academic semester and formation year. On the 2nd semester when I was in my 4th year college seminary, one of the seminarians younger than me who was in 2nd year college came to me crying and he said he was advised to leave and he will not be admitted to enroll for the next school year. I asked him if he did something wrong that I did not know. He strongly said no, he did not do anything bad. So I told him to go back to Father Rector and ask why he is advised to leave. He inquired to the rector and the response of the formator was a shock to him. The rector said, “I am so glad that you did nothing bad; but the seminary fathers were so sad to inform you that you did nothing good either.” They noticed that he was so promising and had a lot of talents to share but he did not go out from his shell of individuality. Each day he just went with the flow of the seminary routine.

This poor seminarian could as well be the rich man in today’s parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. We may wonder why the rich man had to go to hell. We are not told he acquired his wealth by foul means. We are not told he was responsible for the poverty and misery of Lazarus. In fact we are not even told that Lazarus begged from him and he refused to help. We are not told he committed any crime or evil deed. All we are told is that he was feeding and clothing himself well as any other successful human being has a right to do. Why then did he go to hell?

The parable reminds us that there is such a thing as the sin of omission. We often think that we sin only by thought, word and deed. We forget a fourth and very important way through which we sin, namely, by omission. In the “I Confess” we say these words, “I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do.” A reminder for us that the sin of omission can land someone in hell. This is what happened to the rich man. We are invited today to wake up and care more. It’s also our business to take care of the needs of the poor and the needy; let us not fail to do good deeds to the many Lazaruses around us. Let us open our arms and hearts; we reach out and share a little of our blessings with someone in need.
Perhaps we are curious to ask, “Is it the poverty of Lazarus that brought him to heaven?” Take note… Poverty, per se, did not bring Lazarus to heaven. He was not just a poor man but a poor man who believed and trusted in God.
Let us then realize that in the future, it is not automatic to have a reversal of status-- the rich will become poor and the poor will become rich. This is not the case and this is not the point of the parable. Rich people who use their wealth to serve God through their fellow human beings will be blessed in the next life. Poor people who spend their lives in bitterness and envy, refusing to believe and trust in God, may suffer again in the next life. The good news of this parable is this -- If you feel like a Lazarus right now, battered by sickness, poverty and pain, forgotten by society and by those whom God has blessed in this life, continue believing and trusting in God knowing that it will be well with your soul in the end. If you see yourself as one of those blessed by God with the good things of life, open your door and see. Probably there are Lazaruses lying at your gates and you have not taken notice. The poor will be our ticket to enter into God’s kingdom.
The Eucharist is the center of our Christian life. The fundraising that we do should bring us to the Mass; work, studies and relaxation with the family should bring us to the Mass. The acts of charity must be the consequence of our going to church each Sunday. We see in the photos the different Liturgical Ministers serving during the Mass to make the celebration a fitting praise and thanksgiving to the Lord.
Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Efren C. Ambre
We greet these two lovely ladies who celebrate their 90th Birthday this month. Ann Smargie celebrated her birthday on the 14th of September.

Ann Wilson will celebrate her birthday tomorrow, the 26th of September. Happy Birthday to both of you. The greatest gift that the church can give you on your special day is Jesus, the giver of life.
