Saturday, September 10 - 4:00 p.m. St. Peter

Dearly Beloved parishioners, One time, a parishioner of St. Augustine asked him this question, “Father, what are the most important things in religion?” The answer of the saint was amazing. He replied, “… the first is humility, the second is humility and the third is humility.” The book of Sirach in our first reading this Sunday declares, “The greater you are, the more humble you should behave then you will find favor with the Lord.” Having this is mind, I would like to share three attitudes of humility that we see in Jesus. Please allow me to mention them.

Third, the humble person leads by serving. He does quietly what needs to be done. He touched and influenced for good, the lives of others. When Jesus was about to go to the cross and the disciples are trying to decide who among them is the greatest, Jesus quietly tells them that he is their leader and he demonstrates leadership as one who serves. As a religious song goes, “If you want to be great in God’s kingdom, learn to be the servant of all.” Did Jesus reveal the secret of an excellent leader? Yes, by being focused on the mission, not on the “commission,” and he is not misty-eyed about his position and neither is he blinded by worldly ambition. These are the three characteristics of humility. In order to be humble we must not concern ourselves with titles and positions. We must notice other people and we must lead others by being a servant. God bless us all.

The parable of the “Wedding Feast” calls for a preferential treatment of the poor and the disabled among us. He calls for affirmative action. It is in the best interest of the Christian community to give priority to the poor and disabled in our distribution of resources.

First, the humble person does not need titles and positions to maintain a sense of his dignity. He may have a title or a position but he does not really need them. He does not need the best seat in the house to maintain his dignity. The humble man knows his place and takes it. The humble man – if he is supposed to rule – he rules; and when he is supposed to serve, he serves. All he needs to know is that he is a child, he is a friend of the living God. He does not mistake the gifts of God for his own sole achievement.

Sincerely yours in Christ, I am Fr. Efren Ambre

Second, the humble person pays attention to other people. This means that he must treat everybody with care especially those who can do him little favor or no good at all. A governor of Massachusetts in the 1950’s was having a hard day campaigning; he missed his lunch and came in the late afternoon to a church barbeque; he was really hungry. As he moved down the serving line, he held out his plate to the woman serving chicken. She put a piece on his plate and turned to the next person in line. “Excuse me,” the governor said. “Would you mind if I have another piece of chicken?” “Sorry,” the woman told him. “I’m supposed to give one piece of chicken to each person.” “But I’m hungry,” the governor said. “Sorry, only one to a customer.” the woman said again. The governor was apparently a modest and unassuming man but he decided this time he would throw a little weight around. “Do you know who I am? I’m the governor of the state.” In return the woman replied, “Do you know who I am? I’m the lady in charge of the chicken. Move along gentleman.” The governor learned his own lesson. Sometimes we don’t notice “the lady in charge of the chicken” – or the waiter at the table, the person in the kitchen, the clerk at the counter, or as Jesus points out, the poor or the crippled or the lame or the blind; we don’t notice those who are out of sight, those who hide their problem as much as they can; we don’t notice those who fade away from our recognition. According to Jesus the humble person notices other people, even if they seem to be way down at the bottom of the list.

Distribution of food and clothing on the 3rd Wednesday of the month by the Food Bank Volunteers, The Society of Catholic Women burying the dead, and the Kitchen volunteers serving the pasta dinner. Good deeds is a response to the invitation to the Wedding Feast of God’s Kingdom.
