Dearly Beloved Parishioners, We are now in the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary time and in today’s Gospel reading we find some “hard” sayings of Jesus. As a normal person, these sayings are difficult to understand. Perhaps, when we heard or read them the first time, we just ignored them, because we didn’t know what to do with them. Perhaps, we even thought that seemingly Jesus is going out of his way to repel disciples, not to make them his disciples. “If you don’t hate your family and yourself, you can’t be my disciple.” “If you don’t carry your cross like a condemned criminal, you can’t be my disciple.” “If you don’t give up all your possessions, you can’t be my disciple.” This doesn’t sound like a winning formula for church growth. Let us take a closer look at what Jesus is actually telling us and what He means about this hard saying. Jesus actually mentioned three reasons that block discipleship. The first block is Relationships. “If anyone comes to me without hating his mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.” The second block is Lack of Perseverance. “If you don’t carry your cross like a condemned criminal, you can’t be my disciple.” The third block is Possession. “If you don’t give up all your possessions, you can’t be my disciple.” What are the things or who are the people that are blocking us from being the Lord’s disciple? What are those things that are preventing us from doing our mission for the Lord? Let us remember that we are just travelling here on earth and our final destination is eternity. When we travel, let us remember these three things: Travel light. This is the rule of thumb for anyone who seeks to follow Christ. If we are burdened and heavy, following Christ is not easy. If we are attached to worldly pressures, pleasures and measures, we cannot be His disciples. Today let us all reflect on those things that bind us and prevent us from following Christ more truly and more generously.
Travel all the way. Too bad some of us travel with Christ only on the highway and abandon Him as soon as we hit the rough roads and the by-ways. When the going gets rough, all the more should we stay by His side.
Travel free. It is not easy to follow Christ if we have many attachments. Are there people in our lives who prevent us from speaking the truth and from pursuing the Gospel values? Are there people who gag or silence us? Is our mission affected by some people’s permission?
Christ First: After the Sunday Morning Masses, Bishop Larry, the Filipino priests and the local diocesan priests of Greensburg had their summer picnic at the Bautista’s Residence in Greensburg.

Sincerely yours in Christ, FR. EFREN C. AMBRE Cont. on pg. 6
Our Lord Jesus reminds us that God must be the number one preference in our plans and activities and please remember that if He is the center of our lives, every plan and activity that follows will be in good hands for He will take care of all our needs.
