We are all familiar with the parable of the Good Samaritan. Jesus shared this compelling story with a Scholar of the Law who questioned him about attaining eternal life. So well-known is the parable that it long ago became accepted social parlance.

We often refer to someone as a “good Samaritan”.

The parable encourages us to think about who is our neighbor and provides the title for laws in each state of the US intended to protect from liability those who provide assistance to others in need.

Good Samaritans are sometimes sued for the good deed they did because it is alleged they caused harm not healing.

Jesus asks the Jewish audience he addressed to suspend their hatred that they harbored for the Samaritan people. The history of animosity existed from the time of the death of King Solomon in 931 BC. The northern 10 tribes of Israel revolted and established their own kingdom. However, they were conquered by the Assyrians in late 7th Century BC. The Assyrians took the Jewish peoples of the Northern Kingdom into exile at Nineveh, their capitol. They brought Assyrian people to the conquered area and settled them there.

Over the centuries some Jewish traditions were adopted by the Assyrians who settled in what became known as Samaria (thus the Samaritans).

However, they remained generally a pagan people which added to the disdain the Jews felt toward them. Jesus used the good Samaritan example to demonstrate how our preconceived notions of who is our “neighbor” can be off base because of our prejudices.

Jesus complemented the Scholar of the Law for clearly stating that the Law of Moses consisted of loving both God and neighbor. However, when the man attempted to justify himself by asking who is my neighbor, Jesus responded by instructing him.

Jesus told the man to “Go and do likewise”. In other words, to treat those in need that he encountered with mercy, regardless of what race, national origin, faith, language grouping, etc. of which they were a member.

Moses, in his teaching from the Book of Deuteronomy, said something similar but from a different perspective. Moses told the people before they entered the promise land that they must keep God’s commandments and statutes. He made it clear that the Law was not mysterious or in any way remote from the people. Moses said the Law is so close to you it is in your mouths and in your hearts. All that was required is that they carry it out.

We all know in our hearts what God’s Law entails. As Moses noted, we don’t have to go up into the sky or across the sea to retrieve such

knowledge. As Jesus instructed the Scholar of the Law, we only need to follow the model of mercy displayed by the Samaritan in the parable.

Our “prejudices” (From Latin word meaning pre judgment), which are often formed during our youth, limit our ability to fulfill God’s Law of Mercy.

As a result of preconceived notions about another because of their ethnic, racial, social or religious group, we often try to avoid them.

These prejudices are not intentionally formed but often begin in our youth as we are unknowingly exposed to language which demeans or ridicules people because of popular animosity in the culture toward them. Animosity may be based on a personal experience or related to a perception formed from a distance because of obvious differences we have with them.

Disciples of Christ following his commands attempt to overcome their personal prejudices. A Christian knows that pre judgments of others because of a grouping we classify as a threat or have given other negative connotations is unfair. Jesus used an individual from such a group that all Jews disliked in order to make this very point. Some will complain that dismissing prejudices can cause us to be exposed to individuals or circumstance that pose a true threat to us. There may be some truth to that concern if we don’t exercise the gift of our intellect in order to avoid dangerous situations.

There is a quote about Christianity from a great Catholic philosopher which has application to the teaching emanating from the Good Samaritan parable. G. K. Chesterton said: “Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; Christianity has been found difficult and not tried.” In other words, let not our prejudices keep us from being true disciples of Jesus or keep us from accomplishing His work.

The Scholar of the Law could not imagine a Samaritan as his neighbor. Neither could the priest or Levite who walked past the injured man without lending assistance do something they considered taboo. They were afraid of being “ritually impure” as a result of touching a bloody man. They knew the letter of the law but refused to recognize the spirit of the law must take precedence.

Love of God above all things and our neighbor as ourselves is the greatest command. If another obligation must be ignored in the course of showing God’s mercy to someone in need, mercy is our priority. Prejudices that limit our ability to live out the greatest commandment must be overcome in the love of Jesus Christ and the desire to serve him in his people.

Father Efren C. Ambre Birthday: July 27, 1970 Ordination: May 24, 1997. I celebrated my Silver Ordination Anniversary last May of 2022.

Home Diocese: Diocese of Bangued in Northern Philippines My mom, Zenaida Ambre, celebrates her 78th birthday today, July 5, 2022. My dad, Felix Ambre, died on July 10, 2018 at the age of 70. I have two siblings and I am the eldest. My sister, Sisa, is the principal of my hometown parochial school. She has been a teacher for 31 years. My brother John is a nurse practitioner living in London, United Kingdom. He has been working abroad for 18 years now.

My elementary years were spent in my hometown, Holy Cross School. I entered at the St. Joseph Seminary when I was 13 years old; the start of my Grade 7 was the start of my journey to the priesthood.

I have graduated at San Pablo Seminary with a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy. I took my post graduate studies at the Immaculate Conception School of Theology.

Father Arnel Patayon Tadeo, a priest from the Archdiocese of Davao, Philippines, who will be residing at St. Cecilia, Grindstone, will start his ministry on July 14, 2022 as a Parochial Vicar to the parishes of Saint Peter in Brownsville, Saint Cecilia in Grindstone and Saint Francis of Assisi in Footedale and in Masontown. Fr. Arnel is the son of Segundino A. Tadeo (deceased) and Patria G. Patayon (deceased). Born January 10, 1971 in Davao City, he was baptized on March 21, 1971 in his home parish of Immaculate Conception in Mintal, Davao City, where he was also confirmed on May 25, 1975. He attended Bago Oshiro Elementary School in Davao City from 1977 to 1983. He received his secondary education in Holy Cross of Mintal, a Catholic School, from 1983 to 1987. It was during those years that he became a Knight of the Altar (or Altar Server).

It was also those times that he got fascinated with the life of a priest that one day while serving at the Holy Mass, it came unexpectedly to his mind that time will come he will be the one presiding the Mass. However, Fr. Arnel had already dreamt of becoming an Electrical Engineer during his younger days for he has heard of a government-owned Electric company near his home place, which gives good financial remuneration and benefits to their employees. “But God writes crooked line in a straight way.” So, poverty forced him in a way to study in Saint Francis Xavier College Seminary from 1987 to 1991 through the help of benefactors. He received his bachelor’s degree in Philosophy in 1991. Then, he took a three-year of absence from the seminary for he wanted to help his older sister in alleviating the family financial situation. In June 1994 he entered the Saint Francis Xavier Regional Major Seminary of Mindanao where he received his master’s degree in pastoral ministry in 1999. He was ordained as a deacon on November 14, 1998 at the San Pedro Cathedral in Davao City, and then as a priest on December 8, 1999 at the Immaculate Conception Church, his home parish. After his ordination, he was assigned to various responsibilities – Parochial Vicar at Santo Rosario Parish, Toril, Davao City from June 2000 to May 2001; Archdiocesan Youth Director and Parochial Vicar of San Pedro Cathedral from June 2001 to November 2001; Parochial Vicar (International Priest) in 3 parishes in Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey from March 2002 to January 2006; School Chaplain in Holy Cross of Davao College, an Archdiocesan school from June 2006 to May 2012; and Pastor of The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Calinan, Davao City from June 2012 to May 2018. Fr. Arnel arrived in the Diocese of Greensburg last November 6, 2021 for his three-year stay as one of the international priests currently serving in the diocese. In his stay in the parishes of Grindstone, Brownsville, Footedale and Masontown and in the entire diocese, he said, “I am submitting myself not just to the church authorities but most especially to Jesus Christ, the High Priest, who chose me and tasked me to take care of His flock – by leading them towards God and to His Kingdom through my growing love and faith to Him – my God, my master and my Savior.”

Ideally, the Jubilarians will be invited to join the bishop for a special Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass to be celebrated in Blessed Sacrament Cathedral on Sunday, October 9, 2022. Even though personal circumstances may not permit individuals to participate in the Mass, all registered couples will receive a scroll signed by the bishop commemorating their anniversary.

Announcement regarding our Parish Cemeteries Our parish is wholeheartedly committed to caring for the upkeep of our cemetery, particularly during the summer months and holidays when cemeteries are most visited. We do however want to alert you about a few challenges we are facing to help you better understand why you may see sections of the cemetery being cut and trimmed in stages rather than all at one time. Of course weather is a major factor. Days of consecutive rain makes it difficult for scheduled maintenance to happen as planned, but please be assured that we continue to navigate these issues and we are committed to providing the best maintenance possible for the final resting place of your loved ones.

Dear Partner Parish parishioners, This is the last bulletin that will be published during my time as pastor. Therefore, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you one and all for the wonderful seven years as your pastor. My farewell celebration of June 22 was wonderful. So many generous gifts, beautiful sentiments in the cards, and loving embraces from our dear parishioners. There have been challenges and struggles, but always the great consolation of knowing that you were there to support and sustain me, our parochial vicars, and office staff during my seven years here as pastor.

THANK YOU! Many know that I will be moving to Maryland to be closer to my family. I included a picture of “my crew” in the letter I sent to all of our parish families. Some said they did not receive the letter but the vast majority said they enjoyed, in particular, seeing the picture of the grandchildren.
