Notes from Fr. Tim 07-11-2021

I want to give context for the prophet Amos whose passage we read. Amos was told to leave the Northern Kingdom of Israel and return to Judah. However, Amos had been called by the Lord to this specific prophetic work. The year was roughly 762 B.C. which was forty years before the Northern Kingdom of Israel would be attacked and overcome by the Assyrians. The people were taken into exile from which they would not return. Those pagans transplanted in their place by the Assyrians became known as Samaritans.

Before their punishment by the Lord, Amos spoke very forcefully to the people of the Northern Kingdom.

He said to them: You sell the just man for silver, and the poor man for a pair of sandals. You trample the heads of the weak into the dust of the earth, and force the lowly out of the way. Son and father go to the same prostitute profaning my holy name. Upon garments taken in pledge they recline beside any altar; And the wine of those who have been fined they drink in the house of their god.

Amos 2:6-8 The people of the Northern Kingdom had failed to live by the covenant. They were worshipping false gods, idols; they had fallen into deep moral depravity, and Amos was sent by the Lord to turn them back. In our Readings, Amaziah, high priest of the Northern Kingdom complained that Amos criticized too forcefully. Yet Amos was on a mission; he was responding to God's will for his life, and he was not bashful. For speaking on behalf of the Lord, he said: See, I will lay the hammer in the midst of my people Israel,' I will forgive them no longer. The high places of Isaac shall be laid waste, and the sanctuaries of Israel made desolate; I will attack the house of Jeroboam with the sword. Then the prophet the priest of Bethel, sent word to Jeroboam, king of Israel saying: Amos has conspired against you here within Israel; the country

cannot endure all his words. For this is what Amos says: "Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be exiled from its land. Amos7:8-11 Amos spoke quite plainly; he used harsh language to get their attention. He spoke the truth. Indeed, Jeroboam the king would die by the sword, and all the Northern Kingdom would be taken into exile.

That is the work of a prophet: to speak truth, particularly to power.

The Lord had instructed Amos to call the people of Israel back to the covenant, to return to him and to destroy the idols of Baal.

They had enriched themselves at the expense of the poor, as it says: They sell the just man for silver, and the poor man for a pair of sandals.

They sought only pleasure; they gathered material things and broke the covenant. The punishment would be severe. They would not listen to the word of God as Amos instructed them.

We don't have the prophet in the nature of Amos in our country, or in the world at this time, but we do have the writings of St. Paul. He was speaking to the Ephesians in our Reading today in which he said: In all wisdom and insight, God has made known to us the mystery of his will in accord with his favor that he set forth in him as a plan for the fullness of times, to sum up all things in Christ, in heaven and on earth.

In him we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will, so that we might exist for the praise of God's glory, we who first hoped in Christ. In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him. You were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, which is the first installment of our inheritance toward redemption as God's possession, once again, to the praise of his glory. Eph. 1:3-14 We were created, for the praise and glory of God. As disciples

of this age our lives must reflect that reality. We must ask ourselves “are we, focused on the glory of God? If we're a spouse, a parent or a priest we must fulfill our vocation in a way that proclaims the word of God. The Father's plan, the reason he sent Jesus Christ into this world in human vesture is that we have life. Jesus endured his Passion, Cross and death and was raised up in order that we be reconciled to the Father. As such we are co-heirs with Jesus to the Father’s eternal promises if we live out the vocation to which we were called. However, it is not easy to recognize the purpose for our existence. It is difficult because we live in a culture that in many respects doesn’t feel a need for God. Our broader culture has lost sight of those principles and values that were once universally held in our nation.

As I said earlier, we do not have a prophet like Amos today. However, we have the words of the Gospel Jesus articulated, St. Paul’s teachings and those of many saints, and the prophets who have spoken to us about the need to become what God created us to be. We were anointed with the Holy Spirit at the time of our Baptism. As a member of the family of God, we’re called to grow each day in our relationship with Jesus Christ. Each person we meet should experience coming closer to Christ by encountering us.

Those life-giving waters, that Jesus promised in the Gospels would flow from us, are nothing more than an expression of Christ’s life as he dwells within us. But we must be in relationship with him to experience those benefits. So, each day, in prayer, we seek him. We gather at the Eucharistic Table each Mass.

We live out the sacramental life fully, as faithful Catholics, in order that we might know Jesus more deeply. We are united to him in this lifetime so as we come into his presence, he will recognize himself in us.

GOSPEL: MARK 6:7-13 Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick – no food, no sack, no money in their belts. They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic. He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them.” So they went off and preached repentance. The Twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

FIRST READING: AMOS 7:12-15 Amaziah, priest of Bethel, said to Amos, “Off with you, visionary, flee to the land of Judah! There earn your bread by prophesying, but never again prophesy General Intercession: in Bethel; for it is the king’s sanctuary and a royal Please Respond: Lord, hear our prayer temple.” Amos answered Amaziah, “I was no prophet, nor have I belonged to a company of prophets; I was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores. Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass Bishop Kulick desires to recognize all couples celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary during the calendar year 2021. The Jubilarians, their children, relatives or friends should contact their local parish office to register couples for this recognition. Ideally, the Jubilarians will be invited to join the bishop for a special Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass to be celebrated in Blessed Sacrament Cathedral on Sunday, September 19, 2021. Even though circumstances may not permit participation in this Mass, all couples who are registered will receive a scroll signed by the bishop commemorating their anniversary.
