There's something we need to understand about Mark. Each of the Evangelists, as they selected what to include in their Gospel, their target audience was their respective communities. St. Mark's community, so far as we can determine, were pagan Gentiles who became Christians, as opposed to Jews who had become Christians.

One of the ways we can tell that’s so is, throughout Mark's Gospel, sprinkled in, are many references to the Jewish liturgy or the Jewish Faith, which included explanations. Matthew didn't do that because he was basically speaking to Jewish people who became Christians.

As further background about Mark, we must be aware that Mark's community was under tremendous persecution: persecution by the Romans, and persecution by the Jews. This persecution was so very severe it often resulted in a loss of property and on other occasions, the loss of the Christian’s life. So, as Mark prepares to record his Gospel, he questions witnesses about what the Lord had to say during his public ministry and arranges it in such a way as to teach his community how to deal with the difficulties they are encountering. As we discuss Sunday's Gospel, we must keep that in mind.

The people living at that time, the followers of Jesus, had fear of the sea, the great unknown. I would like to share with you a psalm that focuses on the sea and how the people viewed it as treacherous.

Lord, God of hosts, who is like you? Mighty Lord, your loyalty is beyond, is always present to us. You rule the raging sea; you still its swelling waves. You crushed Rahab with a mortal blow; your strong arm scattered your foes. Yours are the heavens, yours the earth; you founded the world and everything in it.

Psalm 89: 9-12 These teachings from the Psalms, from the Jewish Scriptures would address these fears and talk about the power of God that He manifested, as we heard today from Job. The Lord, as He speaks to Job, is correcting him. Job, was an individual who had everything. He then lost all; his health, family and property. As a result Job laments his plight because he could not understand what was happening or why God permitted his suffering.

There were three alleged friends who came to him, spoke to him in lengthy discourses. They continually say, "Job, you've done something wrong, or you would not be punished like this". But Job was a very righteous man; he had always done good in the sight of God. He denies that he did anything wrong. So, he invokes the Lord in response to their comments. He said, "Lord, is there anything I have done wrong? Point it out to me and I will gladly suffer death for that wrongdoing. I know of nothing I've done wrong."

He's lamenting about all these difficulties the Lord has put upon him and asks him, "Why?" In today's Reading, it says that the Lord speaks to him out of the storm. God describes His act of creating the world, and He questions Job about where Job was when He created the universe. I will share a couple of the verses that were left out, through which God’s power is revealed: Who is this that obscures divine plans with words of ignorance? Gird up your loins now, like a man; I will question you,

and you tell me the answers! Where were you when I founded the earth? Job 38:2-4 Then He goes on talking about the mountains, the rivers, the sun, the constellations, the moon, and then, at the end there's a discussion about the sea, which God placed in borders and made the waters stay within.

The Lord’s point being, Job, your vision is too narrow. It's all about your self-interest. I am God; my vision encompasses everything. Every inanimate object, every person, the very constellations, the universe, I encompass in my vision. You do not understand my way. What you were called to do is trust and have faith in me. We now come to Mark's Gospel. They're in the boat.

The boat was an image that the early Church would use to describe the Church because, indeed, it was being battered. There were waves breaking over the helm: the possibility that the Church itself might break up like a boat, literally scattered on the waters. That image was something the people could understand.

They were rightfully fearful for their very lives because of this tremendous storm they were encountering on the sea.

The Apostles mistook His sleeping in the stern on a pillow for not caring what happened to them. Jesus speaks to them about their lack of faith by way of instruction. They did turn to him in their hour of need, which is what each of us do. But Mark is teaching his Christian followers: When you face persecution, you must be like the Apostles and turn to the Lord. Yes, it seems that the boat is sinking, but it is not. Jesus is with us always. In Mark's Gospel he reminds them about discipleship. Discipleship consists of forgetting myself; picking up my cross, and following Jesus.

All of us have difficulties in our lives: whether it is physical suffering that we encounter, financial reverses, family members who have gone off course; perhaps difficulties with our Faith.

The point is, the Lord is available; He is not asleep. If we, in faith, each day, lift up our prayers to the Lord, invoke his presence in our life. For as we encounter the troubled waters of life, there is no other source of peace; there is no other source of joy, in the midst of our difficulties, then our Lord. So let us hear the lament of Job but recognize it as our own. Let us hear the cry of the Apostles but know that it could be our voice that calls upon the Lord in our passage through troubled waters. We turn to the Lord in faith and in trust, recognizing that, indeed, He is at the helm of our life, that Jesus will protect us individually; He will protect this faith community; and will protect our Church.

Our Church through 2,000 years of existence has encountered difficulties: heresies, people in positions of power who violated trust, etc. But the Lord's promises are worthy of belief. He is with us always. Just as Jesus encountered his Good Friday, his Passion, Cross and death before the Resurrection and Easter, we in our lives will do likewise. Jesus sacrificed Himself trusting in the Father, we make sacrifices on behalf of others trusting in the Lord Jesus.

Dear Partner Parish Parishioners I know that you are all aware that Fr Marlon will finish his assignment at the Partner Parishes this Wednesday, June 23rd. We are all sad to see him leave. He used his many gifts to enhance the life of our parishes. Not only is he a reverent minister at the altar, but his homilies were well received by our congregations. His youth, energy and willingness to pitch in and assist with many parish related functions and events will not be easily replaced.

Hopefully, many will gather with us at St. Cecilia on this Sunday to wish him a fond farewell.

Although we’ve been promised another priest to assist and reside in the St. Cecilia rectory, he will not arrive until sometime in the fall from the Philippines. Until then, we will be forced to modify our parish Mass schedules and confessions. See below for details. These changes will go into effect over the 4th of July weekend. They will remain until a replacement priest arrives. ~ Fr. Tim St. Cecilia Daily Mass will be on Wednesdays at 8:00 a.m.

Confession, Exposition, & Benediction will be on Fridays 6 p.m.- 7 p.m.

St. Peter Daily Masses will be on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays at 7:30 a.m.

Confession will remain the same - Saturday, 3:00-4:00.

On July 1 and July 2, there will be no morning Mass at St. Peter’s.

Lila Elizabeth Margovic was baptized into the faith at St. Cecilia on Sunday, June 13, 2021.

She is the daughter of Natalie Batovsky and Adam Margovic. God blessed Lila Elizabeth on her special day, and God bless her parents as they raise her to love and serve the Lord.”

The Historic Church of St. Peter will be hosting a church tour quarterly after one of the weekend Masses. Our knowledgeable docents, Norma Ryan and Larry Franks III, offered insightful views into the history of our beautiful church during the tour on June 13.
