Notes from Fr. Tim 5-29-2022

This Seventh Week of Easter, our passage from John’s Gospel continues to be a record of Jesus’ words from the Last Supper, but we have moved beyond the “Discourse” to Jesus’ “Priestly Prayer” he expressed on our behalf. Jesus prays that we might be one as he and the Father are one. Jesus’ prayer is: … “that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us.” The language may seem somewhat obtuse and difficult to understand but there is a definitive meaning and real world applications for Jesus’ prayer.

The Lord wants his creation, all people to be united with him in a deep personal relationship.

When that is achieved then all people will in effect be one in him. Each person is a member of the mystical body of Christ whether we are still living on earth, in purgatory or heaven. The living are considered the “church militant”, those in purgatory the “church suffering” and those in heaven the “church triumphant”.

Whether alive or in the heavenly realm we are all one in Christ. We are each able to pray for, support and love one another.

A true tragedy arising from our human condition is that there are divisions between us that have shattered our unity or oneness in Christ. Sin, the world, and Satan have throughout history been the forces that limited our ability to live as one in Christ.

These “temptations”, whether in the form of jealously, greed, hatred or other evil motivations, keep us separated from one another and the unity we were created for in the person of Jesus Christ.

One real world example of how we could take actions to overcome division and attain unity involves some Evangelical Church leaders and Pope Francis.

In June 2014, Evangelical leaders Kenneth Copeland, James Robinson, Geoff Tunnicliffe and Bishop Anthony Palmer traveled to Rome to meet with Pope Francis. It has been reported that these Evangelicals represent more than 700 million followers. Of course, Pope Francis represents more than 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide. During their meeting the Evangelicals presented the Holy Father with a proposal. It was in the form of a draft Declaration which had three elements. First, the Evangelicals said that both faiths utilize the Nicean Creed that Catholics recite each Sunday at Mass. Second, based on the declaration signed by the Catholic Church and worldwide federation of Lutheran Churches in 1999 defining “justification by faith”, there was no longer the misunderstanding that caused Martin Luther to begin the “Protestant” movement in the 16th Century. Third, Catholics and Evangelicals are as a result “united in mission because we are declaring the same Gospel”.

The Evangelical leaders presented to Pope Francis the Declaration in preparation for 2017 which was the 500th year since Martin Luther nailed his

thesis to the Catholic Church door in Germany, the action that began the Protestant movement. The effect of this declaration could be, over time, to help unite these faiths not in their liturgies or doctrines but to enable them to treat one another with respect and not as rivals in their respective mission fields, etc.

Pope Francis participated in a significant number of ecumenical gatherings in 2017 in acknowledgement of the 500 years of separation.

I share this example because of the magnitude of the potential for unity between these Christian Churches. Including Orthodox Christians and the two billion Christians represented by those involved, their denominations represent over one quarter of the population of the world. Not unity in our liturgical practices or doctrines but unity in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is an example of a positive development that could lead to greater ecumenism.

It was a grace-filled response to Jesus’ “Priestly Prayer” that we all be one.

The divisions that exist in our families, faith communities and other relationships were not instantly overcome because of the Declaration. However, it is a positive development in our effort to attain the oneness to which Jesus calls humanity. As one can imagine, immediately after these movements became public there was an eruption on social media decrying the fact that Satan was the prime mover behind this initiative to attain unity. It is hard to understand this rationale because the last thing the devil wants is the people of the world to be united proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This struggle will continue but perhaps there is light at the end of the tunnel of division that exists between peoples.

Our reading from Acts about St. Stephen’s martyrdom demonstrates the great potential each person possesses. St. Luke, who wrote Acts, includes St. Stephen’s words which imitated Jesus’ words from the Cross. Stephen also commended his spirit to the Father and asked the Father to forgive those who were taking his life. Such selfless acts manifest the presence of Jesus’ Spirit in Stephen and our human capacity to overcome divisions in order to attain unity.

We all have the same eternal destiny. As St. John recounts in his Book of Revelations, Jesus is our Alpha and our Omega, our beginning and our end. We all thirst for the unity Jesus calls us to in his “Priestly Prayer”. We need only respond to his plea from Revelations this week that: … “the one who thirsts come forward, and the one who wants it receive the gift of life-giving water”. The life-giving water consists of the gift of the Holy Spirit finding expression through our lives as an instrument of God’s love and unity.

This event is sponsored by the Unbound PittsburghGreensburg Team and will be held at Our Lady of Grace Church in Greensburg on Friday, June 10th from 6:30 pm - 9:15 pm and on Saturday, June 11th from 8:45 am - 3:00 pm. Mom with ALS stands, shares mother-son wedding dance with help from her sons…

During the month of May when we honor our Blessed Mother and all of our mothers the news services make a special effort to highlight mum related stories. I found this one about Mrs. Kathy Poirier and her recently married son, Zak. Kathy suffers from ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease. She has no strength or control of her legs or hands. She has been confined to a wheel chair following her diagnosis just three years ago. Prior to that time she seemed completely healthy

and lived a very active life.

In April, Zak and his lovely fiancé Anja were married. At the wedding reception Zak made sure he and his mother were able to share their mother-son dance. Zak and his brothers Nick and Jake gently lifted Kathy from her wheelchair and Zak held her tight throughout the dance. The wedding guests gave them a standing ovation at the completion of their dance.

The article which includes a video of their dance went on for some time discussing the circumstances and the poignant, shared moment of their dance. However, at the end of the article, for some unexplained reason, they noted that Zak and Anja who have been together for eight years, love pierogies (as they said which are “Polish dumplings”).

There aren’t too many sources of pierogies in central Florida. In appreciation for the great respect and honor that Zak shows his mother we thought it would be appropriate to send them a small token in exchange.

Therefore, one dozen frozen pierogies which remain from the kitchen crew’s herculean accomplishment of preparing 17,000 are now on their way to Zak and Anja with congratulations from the Partner Parishes.
