The 4th Sunday of Easter is always celebrated as Good Shepherd Sunday, but it also has another element because, throughout the world, the Church designates this weekend as a weekend of prayer for vocations. How appropriate that we look at the concept of developing young men and women for the priesthood and the religious life in the sense that they will be shepherds, leaders within our Church.

In the 1940s and 50s in what was the Pittsburgh Diocese, before and just after the Greensburg Diocese was established, (1951) there were vast numbers of vocations to the priesthood and religious life (sisters and brothers). Just a couple of anecdotal stories. There were so many priests that the parishes had a pastor and typically an assistant(s). All of the Catholic schools, hospitals, orphanages and other institutes of the Church had assigned chaplains.

Vocations were so plentiful that following ordination some new priests were asked to find temporary employment for 6 months or so (perhaps as a cabbie) until a spot in a parish or institute opened up. Remember when all the Catholic elementary (St Peter’s and St Mary’s in Brownsville) and high schools were still open providing excellent faith based classical education for our children? The sisters who operated the schools with very limited resources did amazing, grace-filled work with our children.

We can’t recreate the circumstances that existed in our country at that time. Our families and, for that matter, almost everyone in our nation universally believed and promoted the JudeoChristian principles that motivated young people to follow Jesus in a life of sacrificial love and service. However, we should not curse the darkness but ignite a light that illuminates the night. I want to talk about a couple of positive developments and programs that have borne good fruit in developing new vocations.

I've described it before in homilies when I discussed World Youth Day. When I was in the seminary, I attended World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany. What an experience to be in the presence of one million young people who are of one spirit, one Faith in Christ. They all gather for the purpose of acknowledging their Faith and being in the presence of our Holy Father. All who attend celebrate Mass with the Pope. Can you imagine being with over a million of your peers shar-

ing joyfully the encouraging words of the Holy Father. All gathered at the Papal Mass to participate in Eucharist, united in the oneness of our Lord's body and blood; truly a profound experience.

The night before the Papal Mass all of the young people are given an opportunity to understand that WYD is a pilgrimage. The idea of pilgrimage is that the journey is spiritual in nature, a challenge to fulfill. It involves commitment and, to a degree, some suffering. All of those attending WYD walk together a distance; typically five to ten miles, carrying all of their gear, and then camp out overnight at the venue where the Papal Mass will be held. I don't know if you've ever been in a gathering of so many people. The way I like to express it: you're camping out with over a million of your best friends. It's quite an experience. You cannot see from one end of the encampment to the other.

The truly amazing thing is that typically not a single problem occurs. Everything is well organized; all of your needs are met. In the morning a couple hundred thousand more locals come to join for the Papal Liturgy. It is truly a powerful experience for all who gather there. This is particularly true from the perspective of the seminarians, as they realize that our Good Shepherd, Pope Francis, is celebrating the Liturgy, that he is there, speaking with one voice to a gathering of young people of every race, nation and language from throughout this Universal Church. Of course, there are some language barriers, but in the Spirit’s powerful presence and universal knowledge of our Liturgy, those are all overcome.

Since Cologne, Germany in 2005 there have been WYDs in Sydney, Australia, Madrid, Spain, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Krakow, Poland and Panama City, Panama. The next will be in Lisbon, Portugal in 2022. Over 3 million young people participated on Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro in 2013. I share the account of WYD with you just to emphasize that those seminarians who gather there with other young people from all the countries in which the Catholic Faith exists (to my knowledge, almost every nation in the world) have this recognition, that our Church, their seminary career, is not about meeting other seminarians; it's not about their parish, wherever it is. It's not about their diocese; it is about the Universal Church that has

been established by the Good Shepherd.

Jesus said they recognize his voice and they follow him. Each of us, on our personal life journey, must come to recognize the voice of our Good Shepherd. He speaks to us; he whispers in our ear. He prompts our heart; he calls us to follow him.

The difficulty now is that we live in this culture where the electronic media is so pervasive, continually invading our spheres of quiet, our homes, our families. It is almost omnipresent; you can't get away from the cell phone, radio, the iPod/Pad, music videos, the electronic games, the TV, etc.

They are so prevalent, drowning out the voice of the Good Shepherd.

This Sunday we hear the Lord speaking so powerfully about the fact that those who are his followers must recognize his voice and respond.

He calls us to pause and just momentarily reflect on whether we are entering into daily prayer. Are we spending the time required for the Lord? This means—not just lifting up our needs and petitions, but waiting for his response, trying to determine through our prayer life, through our sacramental life, what the Lord's will is for us, how we should use the gifts that we have been given in order that we might build up the Body of Christ and help him fully establish his Kingdom, the gifts we have been given in order that his flock might be strengthened.

In the context of the Universal Church, his voice is saying, be my love, be absorbed in my teachings; help others recognize my presence so that each person you encounter will truly encounter me, the Risen Lord, the Good Shepherd," who is calling you by name.

The Greensburg diocese announced last week that a new seminarian, Zachary Lenz from St. Paul Parish will be joining our seven other young men who are being formed for priestly service. There other positive signs that young people are responding to the Lord’s call. Perhaps in this time of the Coronavirus, as we spend more quiet time in reflection in our homes, others will hear the call of the Good Shepherd and respond by pursuing lives of service as religious men and women.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER World Day of Prayer will be observed on Sunday, May 3, also known as “Good Shepherd Sunday.” The purpose of this day is to publicly fulfill the Lord’s instruction to, “Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest” (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). Please pray that young men and women hear and respond generously to the Lord’s call to the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, societies of apostolic life or secular institutes.

Today the Church throughout the world prays for vocations. Will you make a special effort to ask the Lord for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life?

-Pray for the priests who have ministered to you throughout your life, both living and dead -Pray also for our seminarians: Deacon Mark Dunmire, Christopher Pujol, An drew Hamilton, David Slusarick, Craig Alexander, Aidan Kerlin, Jeremy Zawelensky, and Zachary Lentz.

-Encourage your children, grandchildren, or other young people to consider a vocation as a priest or religious brother or sister.

-Pray a rosary for more young men and women in our diocese to respond to God’s call.

Dear Parishioners, I wanted to inform you that our Maintenance Supervisor, Chris Alexander, will soon begin a new job. He has an excellent opportunity to greatly increase his income and is in the process of purchasing a home. Chris has been with us for three years and has done an excellent job of maintaining and even enhancing our facilities. Chris worked closely with the contractors who built St. Peter’s new Social Hall/Rec Center. I was often told by the various contractors how much they appreciated his expertise and assistance. As a matter of fact, one contractor was so impressed, he offered Chris a job.

If anyone knows of an individual who has good mechanical skills and a strong work ethic who may be looking for a new work opportunity, please have them contact the parish office or email ssealy@dioceseofgreensburg.org. In addition to salary, housing is provided and assistance with utilities. Work on behalf of the Partner Parishes also provides an opportunity to encounter and get to know fellow disciples who make up our faith community and continually strive to grow closer to the Lord through service to him and his people.

LETTER OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS to the Faithful for the Month of May 2020 Dear Brothers and Sisters, The month of May is approaching, a me when the People of God express with par cular intensity their love and devo on for the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is tradi onal in this month to pray the Rosary at home within the family.

The restric ons of the pandemic have made us come to appreciate all the more this “family” aspect, also from a spiritual point of view.

For this reason, I want to encourage everyone to rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary at home in the month of May. This can be done either as a group or individually; you can decide according to your own situa ons, making the most of both opportuni es. The key to doing this is always simplicity, and it is easy also on the internet to find good models of prayers to follow.

I am also providing two prayers to Our Lady that you can recite at the end of the Rosary, and that I myself will pray in the month of May, in spiritual union with all of you. I include them with this le er so that they are available to everyone.

Dear brothers and sisters, contempla ng the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this me of trial. I keep all of you in my prayers, especially those suffering most greatly, and I ask you, please, to pray for me. I thank you, and with great affecon I send you my blessing.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us.

In the present tragic situa on, when the whole world is prey to suffering and anxiety, we fly to you, Mother of God and our Mother, and seek refuge under your protec on.

Virgin Mary, turn your merciful eyes towards us amid this coronavirus pandemic. Comfort those who are distraught and mourn their loved ones who have died, and at mes are buried in a way that grieves them deeply. Be close to those who are concerned for their loved ones who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to them. Fill with hope those who are troubled by the uncertainty of the future and the consequences for the economy and employment.

Mother of God and our Mother, pray for us to God, the Father of mercies, that this great suffering may end and that hope and peace may dawn anew. Plead with your divine Son, as you did at Cana, so that the families of the sick and the vic ms be comforted, and their hearts be opened to confidence and trust.

Protect those doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who are on the frontline of this emergency, and are risking their lives to save others. Support their heroic effort and grant them strength, generosity and con nued health.

Be close to those who assist the sick night and day, and to priests who, in their pastoral concern and fidelity to the Gospel, are trying to help and support everyone.

Blessed Virgin, illumine the minds of men and women engaged in scien fic research, that they may find effec ve solu ons to overcome this virus.

Support na onal leaders, that with wisdom, solicitude and generosity they may come to the aid of those lacking the basic necessi es of life and may devise social and economic solu ons inspired by farsightedness and solidarity.

Mary Most Holy, s r our consciences, so that the enormous funds invested in developing and stockpiling arms will instead be spent on promo ng effec ve research on how to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Beloved Mother, help us realise that we are all members of one great family and to recognise the bond that unites us, so that, in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situa ons of poverty and need. Make us strong in faith, persevering in service, constant in prayer.

Mary, Consola on of the afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all-powerful hand and free us from this terrible pandemic, so that life can serenely resume its normal course.

To you, who shine on our journey as a sign of salva on and hope, do we entrust ourselves, O Clement, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.
