Holy week begins with our commemoration of the Lord’s Passion by the reading today at our Palm Sunday Mass from St Mark’s passion account. As individuals and a community of faith gathered at church or even spiritually to commemorate the Lord’s triumphant entry into his city of Jerusalem we know that the cheering crowds will soon be the mindless mob crying out crucify him! Crucify him!

As we celebrate the Holy Triduum at our Partner Parishes still under the COVID restraints I can’t look forward, as in the past, joining with a large gathering of our faithful to journey with Jesus through his passion, cross and death. During this difficult time of the coronavirus, we will be limited to 25% of capacity or participating through the live streaming of our Holy Week liturgies. Even though we will not all be permitted to gather physically as a faith community to celebrate the Sacred Liturgies, we can still at least joyously celebrate Jesus’ Resurrection with one another in a Spiritual Communion on Easter.

For those of you who had discontinued the practice of attending the Lord’s Supper, the commemoration of His Passion and the Easter Vigil when we celebrate his glorious resurrection, I ask you to please consider returning to these Sacred Liturgies. They, of course, enable us to enter into a pious veneration of our Lord’s sacrificial love for us. We have become somewhat more jaundiced in our current culture about the priority of our faith than we were in less secular times.

Unfortunately, far fewer have attended these Holy Week Liturgies than in past years. I hope we can begin reversing that trend even if this year we are at limited capacity or participating via the internet.

As noted above we read from St. Mark’s Passion Narrative at Sunday’s Mass. We won’t be able to replicate Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem as in the past as we

read the Gospel account before the beginning of Mass and then processed to the altar with incense and palms held high. We will bless the palms but will not be able to distribute them as we normally do. Hopefully, those who are able to participate will recognize our sincere effort to transmit the power of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem without the traditional rituals.

You hear the most striking words from the Passion narrative as Jesus’ utters “My God, my God why have you forsaken me?” Think of these words and of Jesus’ salvific act which achieved forgiveness for all: the Roman soldiers who had scourged Jesus, who threw him down painfully onto the roughhewn wood of the cross and who drove the iron spikes through his hands and feet; Pilate who cowardly turned Jesus over to be crucified knowing he was innocent; the crowd who had hailed him but became a mob demanding his crucifixion. This also includes the Apostles who deserted him at his most desperate hour of need including Peter who would deny him three times.

All forgiven!

What about us who have denied the Lord so many times through our selfish, sinful acts that inflicted pain on Jesus through the suffering we caused our brothers and sisters. Our sinful acts cause injury to the Body of Christ. All forgiven!

We who are the beneficiaries of such a wondrous love as this must journey with Jesus through these remembrances of our Heavenly Father’s merciful offering of his very son for us. Our small sacrificial offering of sharing in our Lord’s passion, cross and death throughout the Triduum makes our action redemptive for us and those we love.

After Peter’s failure to stay awake during the intense agony of the Lord in the garden; Jesus forgave him. He continually does so for us as we sin and fall; forgiving and lifting us up anew. Pope Francis, when commenting on this passage from the Gospels, said: “by

bending down to heal our bodies and souls, by understanding our human sufferings and sins, Jesus has shown us the face of God’s mercy. By forgiving Peter, Jesus demonstrates the mercy that embraces us, who have also failed to always be faithful disciples of Jesus”.

Are we able to follow Jesus’ model by the small sacrifice of participating in the Triduum Liturgies even if only electronically in the comfort of our homes? He said to the Father in the Garden of Gethsemane “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still not my will but yours be done”. The Father’s will for us is to live this life in a deep personal relationship with Jesus. He wants us to follow that model of sacrificial love demonstrated so powerfully by Jesus as he obediently said yes to his passion, cross and death. We do this every day by fulfilling our responsibilities, our duties in our respective vocations. Let us also prayerfully inquire of the Father if our participation in these beautiful liturgies that are celebrated in remembrance of Jesus is his will for us. We can enter into the depth of our faith, that Jesus so poignantly expresses through his yes to the Father’s plan for our salvation. Our participation unites us more fully to the heavenly host as members of his mystical body celebrating the wonderful gift of our redemption in Christ.

Throughout this time when many continue experiencing suffering as a result of the coronavirus pandemic; whether physical, emotional or spiritual, let us unite our suffering with Jesus’ passion, cross and death. In our participation in the Mass or even Spiritual Communion with him we will anticipate the joy of the resurrected life we will share with Christ, our Savior.

‘Be the Light’ with 2021 Diocesan Lenten Appeal

The 2021 Diocesan Lenten Appeal is offering parishioners throughout the Diocese of Greensburg a chance to “Be the Light” for their faith community. The Lenten season is a reminder that Christ is the light in our lives and this is an opportunity to “Be the Light” for those in need. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone in some way and this includes the faithful of the diocese. There is a way to help by supporting the 2021 Diocesan Lenten Appeal. Even a small gift can make a big difference in your parish. Donate to the “Be the Light” campaign to support God’s work that is being done in the Diocese of Greensburg.

Holy Family Parish, Latrobe, saw an immediate need to create new ministries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many parishes in the Diocese of Greensburg, they started a cleaning ministry to make sure the church was safe and sacred for all who gathered, and a weekly meal ministry last summer to help feed many who lost their jobs. Donate to the BE THE LIGHT campaign to support God’s work being done in the Diocese of Greensburg.

HOLY WATER INITIATIVE These three enterprising and imaginative parishioners came up with a good solution for distribution of Holy Water. During the pandemic, parishes are not permitted to provide public Holy Water fonts. The solution was suggested by the ladies to provide individual Holy Water bottles for personal use by our parishioners. The Holy Water is available for all to take from the vestibules of our Partner Parishes. Fr. Tim blessed the water and the ladies filled the 200 bottles for our parishioners.
