After the Transfiguration, Peter wanted to remain atop Mount Tabor.

In his excitement, he said, "Let us build three tents: one for Jesus, one for Moses and one for Elijah.

But you and I all know that when we have a mountain-top experience: our wedding day, the birth of a child, a new job or home, perhaps completion of a long term major project, for sports fans the Steelers, Pens or Pirates winning it all or some other joyous fulfillment of a hope or desire, it lasts but a short time.

We then come down from that mountain top to the reality of our day-to-day responsibilities and duties of our vocation. Sometimes those day-to-day occurrences become mundane. We begin to wonder: "Why can’t I have that joy and peace I just experienced in my day to day life? Is the Lord really with me? Is it worth believing his promises and following him?”

It's not easy! However, we remember the post-Resurrection story from Luke’s Gospel about the two disciples who were despairing after the Lord's death: they were going home. They left Jerusalem. They didn't want the Romans and the Jews to do to them what they did to Jesus. They were going to their home in Emmaus.

The man they encounter on the road acts like he knows nothing of what's taken place. They asked him, "Are you the only person from Jerusalem who doesn't know the things that happened to Jesus?" He asked, "What things?"

When they described what took place, he begins to open the Scriptures for them. He talks about all of those prophetic utterances that Elijah represents, and how they were all fulfilled in what Jesus experienced.

Since it was getting late, they invited him to come to stay at their home that night. Then, in the breaking of the bread, they recognized Jesus and they came to un-

derstand. That's why we gather every Sunday. We hear the Lord's Word, we listen to the Scriptures, break bread at the Eucharistic Table, the altar of sacrifice and we experience him anew.

Now, most of us say, "Well, if I had only lived at the time of Jesus and experienced those miracles and observed the multitudes, I, too, would have followed him anywhere. I would have been a true disciple." But the reality is Jesus’ disciples had great challenges. They didn't have the benefit of St. Paul's letters or those of Apostles James and John. The Gospels hadn’t yet been recorded. They had no idea of what was going to occur.

They were discerning on the way, and it wasn't easy. They were often confused and unsure. Peter was constantly speaking out of turn because he thought he knew everything, but he was often in error until Pentecost, when the Spirit came upon him and the others and filled them with knowledge of the Scriptures and all Jesus had accomplished.

We, on the other hand, have the benefit of the Scrip-tures and the benefit of this Eucharistic Table. We gather each Sunday to have “on the road to Emmaus” experi-ences, to recognize Jesus in his Word and in the breaking of the bread. Have you ever come to church not real pleased with the person standing beside you? Perhaps it’s your spouse. Maybe there was a petty argument or it could be an issue with the children, or even a parent. We are frustrated and uncomfortable.

However, as we hear the Word we begin to feel a spiritual transformation. Then we come forward to share the body and blood of Jesus and suddenly we don’t feel so distant from our spouse, children or parent.

We may even take their hand or embrace them in our mind’s eye because the Lord has softened the hardness of our heart. During Mass in the Word and breaking of the bread, we experience the power of Jesus’ presence.

Indeed, that’s why we gather and that's why it's important that we come to Mass every Sunday because the challenges that we've been experiencing have worn us down and made us wonder if our efforts to complete our daily duties are worthwhile. We sometimes ask ourselves if our faith and teaching about the value of loving sacrificially is true. We come seeking to encounter the living God who enables us to overcome, through the light of his love, our uncertainties and questions.

If we have a true community of faith, that’s what we encounter in one another. Christ is present during the Mass in his Word, the Eucharist, the Priest and each of us. We encounter this truth through participation in the Eucharistic celebration. We are a community of faith: a people drawn together for the purpose of building up the Body of Christ.

During this Lenten season, Jesus wants us to fast and abstain to examine how we’re living in relation to others. We ask ourselves, “am I fulfilling my commitments? Could I re-commit to do so better: to be less selfish, to be more like Christ: loving in a sacrificial way?” It's a difficult thing but he's asking us to do so, and to recognize that this mountain-top experience of Peter, James and John lasted but briefly, and then they had to step out in faith every day, particularly following the Lord's Passion, cross and death.

Think of how they transformed the world. You and I won't have those opportunities, but we can certainly transform things within our family by affirming or nurturing one another. We can bring the light of Christ into our faith community and the workplace as Jesus’ disciples. Let us be the salt that leavens and enables those we come in contact with to taste the sweetness of life.

Catholics and members of other Christian faiths throughout the Pittsburgh area are once again taking part in the national 40 Days for Life campaign. The mission of 40 Days for Life is to unite the Body of Christ in the spiritual battle to end abortion. Join us for 40 days of prayer & fasting; a peaceful vigil is held every day in front of Planned Parenthood at 933 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh.

40 Days for Life has been proven an effective pro-life campaign that has been joined by more than half a million people worldwide. We will be traveling to Pittsburgh on Saturday, March 21. The bus will depart St. Peter’s parking lot at 7:15 a.m.

Since I’ve been ordained a priest, I have, of course, learned my role, the expectations of parishioners and how to interact with the Diocesan authorities. However, one of the most significant elements of my learning and experience of the priesthood relates to the transition of one of my brother priests from our earthly responsibilities to the heavenly realm.

Many of you remember Msgr. Michael Matusak. He died last October. During my five years as a seminarian, I was able to get to know him quite well. I was actually assigned to his parishes in Mt. Pleasant for my clinical work while studying for the priesthood. I also lived in Mt. Pleasant.

Fr. Alan Polczynski is the executor of Monsignor’s estate. As you can imagine, there are many sacred vessels, priestly vestments and personal items that Monsignor acquired and used as he celebrated the sacraments of the church during his almost 45 years as a priest. Fr. Alan now has the responsibility of ensuring these sacred items are given to those who will value them and ensure appropriate care in their handling.

The photo above displays the special items that Fr. Alan gave me from Monsignor’s estate. The stole with the blue highlights is actually a gift I gave to Monsignor on the day of my ordination in thanks for all the help and friendship he had shown me during my time as a seminarian. The chalice was actually Fr. Richard Mackiewicz’s from his ordination. However, on the occasion of his death in 2010 the Chalice went to Fr. Mac’s good friend Msgr. Matusak. The tradition continues! You’ll be seeing these beautiful items at upcoming Masses and celebrations. I will continue to pray for my deceased brother priests and hold their memories dear.

IRISH DAY! To honor the Irish immigrants and stone masons who built St. Peter’s church in 1845, we are having an Irish Bagpiper play before and after the 11 am Mass on March 15. Please join in this part of our 175th year celebration. Come and take part in the Mass, enjoy the music and stay for refreshments after. (Irish) passport not required!

On Sunday, March 1st, the Diocese celebrated the Rite of Election. Those participating in the year-long process of RCIA (adults entering the Catholic Church) traveled to the Cathedral to be acknowledged and accepted by Bishop Malesic.

Our students will be attending the Blairsville retreat at Ss. Simon and Jude Parish on Saturday Mar 14, 2020 from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. We will provide transportation for the students.
