All of us are human thus we sin. We are tempted; tested often, so we gather each Sunday as a faith family to listen to the Word of God, to receive the body and blood of Christ. We do so to be strengthened and sustained in order that we be able to overcome our temptations.

I think it's so important to recognize that, as a community of faith, we're a community of sinners: not quite yet a community of saints.

However, we're working to fulfill God’s plan for each of us to become saints.

I often think about how best as pastor to help our people build a strong, abiding relationship with the Lord. I remembered the passage from Isaiah (IS1:16-18) in which he speaks of the reality that we are sinners, but that we can be cleansed and purified and made whole by the love of God. I’d like to share this passage with you as we celebrate this first week of Lent to see if it resonates with you as it has profoundly touched me. Here are Isaiah’s words, speaking on behalf of the Lord: "Wash yourselves clean.

Put away your misdeeds from before my eyes. Cease doing evil; learn to do good. Make justice your aim and redress the wronged. Hear the orphan's plea; defend the widow.

Come now; let us set all things right. Though your sins be like scarlet, they may become white as snow. Though they be crimson red; they may become white as wool."

We are all aware of temptations to which we’ve been subjected.

They're constantly before us, and yet it can be so difficult to know, if indeed, the promptings we experience are a temptation. When Satan tempted Adam and Eve, even when he tempted Jesus, it wasn't black and white. Just like our experience, we can’t always discern if the prompting is truly evil and if I act on the suggestion, I’d be sinning. It's not always clear. There are often attractive elements in the temptation: something that's appealing to us. Many times the temptation will seem inconsequential. We'll think: "Well, nobody will know," or "just this one time will be OK." We can come up with many such rationalizations.

However, if we think about the temptation and the related offense, it often entails an attack against the virtues by which we try to live our life.

Jesus demonstrated these virtues so profoundly throughout his life, his ministry and the sacrificial offering he made for us when he gave his life so that we could have life in him.

I'd like to remind us of those virtues: particularly the virtue of sacrifice.

Are we willing to sacrifice on behalf of others, and forego our own momentary pleasure? Do we really trust and believe in God? Do we live like disciples, adhering to his eternal promises? Indeed, to step out in faith we must believe He is the shield about us and will care for us in every circumstance. We don't always need to focus only on our own security.

God created us all. We owe him acknowledgement, thanksgiving and adoration. Satan attempted not to acknowledge but to destroy Jesus and the Father’s plan for our salvation. He had fasted for forty days, and was hungry. Satan said, "Take these stones and turn them into bread." Satan attempted to tempt Him to satisfy his hunger, but Christ said "No." Jesus’ mission was one of obedience and suffering on our behalf, not for himself.

When Jesus began his public ministry, obedient to his Father’s command, He would take those couple of loaves and transform them to feed the hungry multitude instead. The night before He died, He said, "My body will be broken, my blood will be poured out for the life of man. Take and eat my flesh; it is the bread of life." He gave us that gift, his very body to sustain us, and he asks us to feed others, that as we are strengthened by that gift of life, we be inspired to follow that model of sacrificial love and go out and care for others as our vocation enables and instructs us.

Finally, Satan says, fall down before me, I’ll give you the entire universe; it will be yours." Jesus refused. Think of the ironic contrast, how in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prostrates himself before his heavenly Father, and Satan again is whispering in his ear: "Don't be stupid.

Why go through this horrific Passion, cross and death? Those people won't even care; they'll never follow you. That's the way humans are."

Jesus once again refuses to be tempted.

Jesus was obedient to his

Father. He said, "Father, let this cup pass me by, but your will be done, not mine." The Father's will was that Jesus would drink deeply of this bitter cup. Jesus said "yes," and entered into his crucible so that we might have life in Him. There are times in our life when we're asked to sacrifice: maybe not literally as Jesus did, but there are times when we have to give ourselves away for someone in our family, or perhaps someone in the workplace. When the Lord asks us to do something difficult, not to focus on our own needs and wants, but on that of another, we know it can be so difficult.

Jesus is our model. He models sacrificial love and enables us to develop the necessary virtues in order to live our lives as the Lord would have us, based on his model of obedience and sacrifice. This first week of Lent let us resolve to make an effort to live more sacrificially as we offer our abstinence, fasting and alms giving to the Lord.

LENTEN DAILY MASS Last year during Lent we experienced a nice increase in attendance for our weekday Masses. Hopefully, there will be a good number throughout this Lent who will commit to this wonderful practice. We recognize the weather can be prohibitive but if we exercise good judgment on when to attend, the Lenten practice of Daily Mass participation can be safe and will be greatly rewarding in this life and the life to come.

Some do not like the early times for Daily Mass. Perhaps you would consider the noon Mass Fr. Thumma will have on Wednesdays during Lent at St. Cecilia followed by the Stations of the Cross. You are also invited to participate in our Lenten Stations of the Cross at St. Peter which will be at noon and 7:00 PM every Friday. Another aspect of our Lenten journey is strengthening our faith communities.

Wonderful opportunities to meet and greet fellow parishioners will take place with at St. Cecilia’s (see the calendar) and with Lenten Fish Fries at St. Peter’s new social hall on Ash Wednesday and every Friday of Lent from 11:00am to 7:00pm.

PARTNER PARISH EVENTS Fish Fries are Back in Brownsville; Parish Project Featured in The Catholic Accent

The return of the Lenten fish fry to St. Peter Parish is featured in the February issue of The Catholic Accent quarterly magazine, which is accompanied by a TV show on WTAE-TV, “The Accent On-Air: Faith and Food.” The magazine is scheduled to be mailed Feb. 20, and “The Accent On-Air: Faith and Food” debuts Sunday, March 1, at 11:30 a.m. on WTAE-TV. If you are not able to watch the show March 1, it will be broadcast again on Sunday, March 15, at 11:30 a.m. It also airs overnight at 3:07 a.m. on March 7, 14, 21 and 28, and April 4 and 11 and at 3:37 a.m. on March 14 and 28.

Let’s Support Our Three Partner Parish RCIA Participants Please remember in your prayers those in our Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program preparing to come into full union with the Church. They will be receiving the Easter sacraments at the Vigil. They are Candidate Travis Petty, Catechumens Trista Crise and Hillary Redman. We celebrate the Rite of Sending at the 4:00pm Mass this first Sunday of Lent. They will be received by Bishop Malesic at the Rite of Election on Sunday at the Cathedral. They’ve embarked with the rest of our parishioners on the Lenten journey of purification and enlightenment.

On the upcoming Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays of Lent, we will be celebrating the “Scrutinies” at our weekend liturgies. We will have the Masses at The Historic Church of St. Peter on either Saturday evening or at one of the Sunday Masses. The Scrutinies have the spiritual purpose of encouraging those entering the Church to engage in selfsearching and repentance. Please show your support for these courageous individuals as they commit to membership in the Catholic Church.

Attention All Confirmation Candidates Confirmation students are required to attend a mandatory NET retreat as part of their preparation for this sacrament.

Our students will be attending the Blairsville retreat at Ss. Simon and Jude Parish on Saturday Mar 14, 2020 from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. We will provide transportation for the students. More information to follow soon on departure times.

Again, this is a mandatory requirement so we are asking that you make every effort to attend this with the group.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST GREAT SUCCESS

The Knights of Columbus Councils 3461, 5826, and 1275 sponsored and worked as cooks, kitchen help and clean-up crew. Members of the Society of Catholic Women help serve tables. Many parishioners provided baked goods for the Bake Sale which was handled by Caroline Fecek and the Cavrak sisters: Janet, Jeannie, and Suzanne. Thank you to the Knights from Bentleyville and Uniontown for your help! With donations from the pancake breakfast and sales from the Bake Sale, we generated just over $2,000!

The mission of 40 Days for Life is to unite the Body of Christ in the spiritual battle to end abortion. Join us for 40 days of prayer & fasting; a peaceful vigil is held every day in front of Planned Parenthood at 933 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh.

40 Days for Life has been proven an effective prolife campaign that has been joined by more than half a million people worldwide.
