.STRETCHING HANDS Mk 1:40-45 Martin was a young soldier in the Roman army. Elegantly dressed, he mounted on his horse one day when a leper begging for alms accosted him. The sight and the stench of rotting flesh were so repulsive to the sensitivities of young Martin that his first instincts where to ride off on his horse. But something inside him made him walk up to the beggar. Since all he had was his military coat, he cut in two and gave half to the leper while he wrapped himself with the other half. It was a very cold winter day.

That night in his dream he saw Christ clothed in a half coat saying to the angels around his throne, “Martin has clothed me with his garment.” This event was the turning point in the life of him who was to become St. Martin of Tours.

There are still millions of lepers in the world whose bodies have been disfigured by the sickness. There are many people though whose minds the disease has damaged for it has destroyed their Christian attitude towards patients.

Leprosy is a terrible disease.

During Jesus’ time, leprosy was still a contagious disease. The person who contracted the disease not only has to contend with the illness, but he/she is ostracized from the rest of society or is separated from people. And their sickness is also considered as a punishment from God. Because of it they become even outcasts in their religion for they are not allowed to enter the temple or synagogue.

Nowadays, we call leprosy Hansen’s disease and thank God it has become a curable disease because there are medicines available. But the situation and the ancient Hebrew attitude to leprosy in Jesus’ time and as stated in the Book of Leviticus were still worse.

Many other skin diseases like pimples, acne, eczema, psoriasis, and anything that is a blush on the skin were considered leprosy.

Although there are many types of leprosy, the basic one consists of an open cancerous sore. By law the leper has to stay away from public places and people. If he/she comes near other people, he/she has to announce his/her presence by crying out: “Unclean! Unclean!”

Actually, the leper in today’s gospel experiences three kinds of separation.

First is separation from himself. The leper feels that he is a burden to himself. Slowly but steadily he becomes disabled, the unbearable itching sets in, the disease becomes incurable and the extremities of the bodies fall off: his fingers, toes and finally the hands and the feet. The leper can hardly help himself and needs help so much from others.

Second is separation from others. The leper needs help from others and yet nobody helps him since he is cast out from society.

He is separated from others. He is alone. Where he would need consolation, there is nobody to turn to.

Where he would enjoy a consoling word, a helping hand, all shun him and he himself has to avoid houses of healthy people. When the people came close to him, the leper would have to alarm them shouting: “Unclean! Unclean!” We are social beings by nature but the leper is all alone.

Third is separation from God. If the leper is alone and a burden to himself there is still somebody left to turn to and that is the Lord Himself. But the leper was even separated from the Lord because he was not allowed to attend the religious service in the synagogue since he was unclean by his leprosy. We all have experienced how common prayer songs help us to see our suffering in the right proportion and how they give us courage to carry it in case we cannot be healed.

But today, thanks to the advances of medical science, leprosy is

curable and does not bear the moral stigma it once had. Nowadays we seldom meet lepers but we do have modern-day lepers. It is coincidental that LEPER if written backward, it spells REPEL (or to reject).

The leper has to suffer alone, lonely, excommunicated and ostracized from the community.

Nowadays, we seldom meet lepers, but we do have modern day lepers, where we are the ones who made them lepers. They are those who are considered as social outcasts or shunned by people in the society. They are those whom we considered unworthy of our love.

They are those whose dignity and respect are withheld from them.

Who are they? They are those whose lives are bad (the drug addicts, the prisoners, etc.). They are our own enemies to whom we don’t want to talk because our reason is those people are impossible to talk to. We don’t want to talk to them because we don’t have time.

These are some of our excuses in order not to talk to them.

What is our attitude now towards these groups of people whom we considered as modern-day lepers?

Let us be healers to these kind of people so that they could still find hope in their lives, and they would feel God’s healing touch through us.

Last Thursday, the11th of February was the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Pope St. John Paul II declared this day as World Day of the Sick. It is providential that the Gospel this Sunday is about the healing of a leper. Let us continue to pray for the sick and to help them in any way we can. But let us also pray for those who are truly sick in spirit: those who, in their selfishness, are unwilling to stretch out their hands. May the Lord touch them and heal their withered hands and hardened hearts so that they may once again learn to reach out and enjoy life in all its fullness.

Therefore a number of practical matters must be considered: • Sprinkling with ashes is messy. These ashes will not remain on your head. They will fall onto your face, onto clothing, onto the pews and floor.

• When receiving this ritual sprinkling you may wish to close your eyes. These fine particles, unfortunately, will serve as an irritant.

• No extraordinary care is required when cleaning ashes from clothing, seating surfaces, etc. As a sacramental, these ashes remind us that everything God has fashioned is holy. However, they need not be treated with the same respect that we afford sacraments.

Please remember that the reception of ashes on Ash Wednesday is not required. Whether participating in this ritual or not, all the faithful are urged to undertake penitential practices during these Lenten days. Together with the whole Church throughout the world we journey with the one who will turn our sorrow to joy.

Voca on discernment events for boys, young adults Jeremiah Days is an opportunity for middle school-aged boys and their parents or guardians to gather to learn, discuss and pray about a voca on to the priesthood. The group will meet on the following days: Feb. 20 and April 17 from 9:30–11:30 a.m. at St. Barbara Parish, Harrison City. To register, visit gbgvoca ons.org.
