Last Sunday our challenge was to dig out from the snow. Bishop Zubik of Pittsburgh in his homily for the March for Life’s closing Mass of the all night Vigil at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception called it ”Snowmageddon.” Somehow we all survived; we made it back from Washington D.C. However, I love the way Lord has the last laugh in every circumstance. We all wondered why such a storm would disrupt the March for Life with only a relatively small group of 40,000, mostly locals, able to participate because of the impending storm. Even with early departure by pilgrims from the DC area, many buses were stranded on the Turnpike. Concern for the condition of those on the buses stimulated media attention. The most compelling image was of a large crowd of young pro-lifers gathered around an altar made of snow. A group of priests concelebrated Mass on the berm of the Turnpike with a crowd of pilgrims from different states participating as their congregation. The Lord choses his own time to display his power, such as in the storm, but also powerful consolation in the celebration of Mass as a reminder of his sacrifice on our behalf.

Many people, yours truly included, had pre-paid for Friday evening dinners to support the Organizers of the March or for hotel rooms that could not be used because of early departures– anecdotal stories are filtering out of DC that some fancy hotels provided those prepaid rooms to the homeless and other needy to protect them from the winter storm. Jesus would approve!

As these bulletins are read I hope that Bishop Malesic has arrived and my pastorate installation has been completed. Last weekend my family arrived, but because of the inclement weather the installation was postponed. We had a wonderful visit but they returned home without witnessing the ceremony in which they hoped to participate. I told the Bishop that the important consideration was that I be able to serve the good people of St. Peter and St. Cecilia, and not when the installation occurred.

All of our scriptural passages this fourth week of Ordinary Time speak of sacrifice. Through diverse contexts and perspectives the Father asks us in these readings to love sacrificially like Jesus. He reminds us that suffering is an integral element of discipleship. Jeremiah was afraid to become a prophet on behalf of the Lord. When he ultimately agreed and boldly proclaimed God’s truth he suffered. St. Paul tells the Corinthians they must develop the spiritual gift of love. The “love” the evangelist speaks of is not an emotional, passionate love but Agape, the love of Christians that entails sacrifices like Jesus. In Luke’s Gospel passage Jesus attempts to share joy with the people of Nazareth, but instead of recognizing and celebrating their neighbor as Messiah they reject him and attempt to cast him off the hill on which the town stands. This rejection of Christ’s mission as Messiah prefigures the suffering he will encounter in the jealousy and hatred of the Jewish leadership and the resulting passion he offers on our behalf.

Daily Mass (Equipped for the Day’s Service) Each day we, the people of God, face challenges that must be encountered and overcome in order that our family and we may live in some degree of peace and tranquility. We can refer to these challenges as crosses or the suffering entailed in loving sacrificially like Christ. Sometimes the obstacles and barriers we face seem insurmountable. We can become frightened or uncertain whether we will prevail. If, however, our day starts with Daily Mass at which we are fed by the Word and Eucharist then our strength will be sufficient to overcome.

Through the Word of Scripture and the gift of Christ’s Body and Blood we are strengthened for our day’s work. Very practically we are given the armor to defend ourselves and our family from the slings and arrows of daily life. The grace not to over react when traffic delays our arrival or an aggressive driver nearly causes an accident. The Lord strengthens us to complete our daily routine, whether through the repetitive work of raising a family, maintaining a household or talking to difficult customers.

Even the word “Mass” connotes that we are empowered to fulfill our Baptismal Commission by accomplishing our daily work. The Latin Mass always ended with “Ite, missa est, which means “go, you are sent.” By completing the work our vocation entails, we are fulfilling our commission of loving and serving on behalf of the Lord. He sends us forth from daily Mass strengthened to accomplish his will through our work.

The word liturgy originally meant a “public work” or a “service in the name of/on behalf of the people.” In Christian tradition it means the participation of the People of God in “the work of God.” (cf. Jn 17: 4). Through the liturgy Christ, our redeemer and high priest, continues the work of our redemption in, with, and through his Church. — Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1069.

As the interior of St. Cecilia's Church is being painted, this project is coming to a close and St. Cecilia's will resume their regular Mass schedule as of Sunday, January 31, at 9:45 A.M. We appreciate your patience. A number of parishioners have made an inquiry concerning funding for this project. St. Cecilia's project for the 2016 Diocesan Lenten Appeal (DLA) is specifically for payment of costs connected with the painting project. The details will be presented to the parish as the yearly DLA begins after Ash Wednesday.

Little is known about Saint Blaise prior to his mention in a court physician's medical journal. The physician, Aëtius Amidenus, spoke of Saint Blaise's aid in treating objects caught in the throat. He was also mentioned in the book of Acts, where he was aided by animals and treated people and beasts alike. Saint Blaise is believed to begin as a healer then, eventually, became a "physician of souls." He then retired to a cave, where he remained in prayer.

People often turned to Saint Blaise for healing miracles.

Saint Blaise is depicted holding two crossed candles in his hand, or in a cave with wild animals. He is also often shown with steel combs. The similarity of the steel combs and the wool combs contributed to Saint Blaise's being designated as the patron saint of wool combers and the wool trade.

The feast of St. Blaise is on Wednesday February 3rd.

Blessing of throats will take place after Masses to ensure that all who desire the St. Blaise Blessing will have an opportunity to participate.

Timothy Kruthaupt is once again in Washington, D.C., today for the 43rd annual March for Life, protesting the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 decision that legalized abortion.

“We have adjusted our return time because of the blizzard.

Hopefully the Lord will bless us with a safe journey,'' Kruthaupt, 63, of Brownsville, said in a text he sent Thursday morning before leaving for the march with a group that included local residents.

Kruthaupt is experienced in these winter trips for the March for Life. It's a trek he's missed just once in the past 25 years.

“The core belief of our faith is that every individual from conception to natural death has a distinct impression of God's presence -the image of God,'' he said in a recent interview.

While abortion receives the most attention in this fight, Kruthaupt explained the movement is concerned with many issues, including in vitro fertilization and euthanasia. He called it: “the full span of life.''

Kruthaupt has been working in the Brownsville-Grindstone area since July and will be formally installed as pastor of Historic Church of St. Peter on Jan. 24 while continuing as administrator of St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church in Grindstone. He works with the Rev. James Petrovsky, senior pastor active. Membership for the two parishes includes approximately 900 families.

Kruthaupt brings with him an enthusiasm for social justice issues. In addition to the March for Life, he prays two Saturday mornings each month before abortion clinics in Pittsburgh as part of two different programs -- “We believe prayer accomplishes amazing things'' -- and travels back to the Steel City two nights a month to feed the homeless with a group named Meals on the Boulevard. Sometimes local residents join Kruthaupt in what he calls “opportunities to serve and witness.''

Concerned with finding ways to engage people with the church, Kruthaupt updated the weekly bulletin and created a coed basketball team for middle-school students called the Brownsville Catholic Padres that play home games at California University's Hamer Hall.

“It's created some excitement, some positive feedback,'' said Kruthaupt of the basketball team, noting about 65 people usually attend the games.

Kruthaupt wants to expand the churches' youth ministry and include youths in next year's March For Life as he has at past assignments, having them visit Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial for a lesson on civil rights as well as attend a pro-life Mass and youth rally before the national march.

The pastor would also like to see the parish build a new social hall that can be used for parish basketball and volleyball teams as well as by the community.

Noting on-going work to revitalize Brownsville, Kruthaupt said, “We want to make our contribution as a church to that effort.''

Kruthaupt's work is making people take notice.

Jerry Zufelt, managing director of the Office for Communications for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Greensburg, called Kruthaupt “a strong advocate for life'' and said he “is doing some good things in the Brownsville -Grindstone area.''

Shannon Sealy, business manager and parish secretary, remarked, “I think he's a breath of fresh air for Brownsville and I see good things happening.''

Norma Ryan, a parishioner who is treasurer of Brownsville Area Revitalization Corp. and a former mayor, said, “To have someone of his background and his experience in life is what our church needs and our community needs. I love his sermons. I think he speaks from his heart.''

Kruthaupt came to the priesthood late and is one of two priests in the Greensburg diocese who is actually a father.

A native of Ohio, Kruthaupt's wife, Jane, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease while pregnant and died when their son, Alex, was 16 months old. With help from his family, Kruthaupt raised his son, now 36, and living with his wife and two daughters in Annapolis.

Kruthaupt, who earned an economics degree from Western State Colorado University and a law degree from Northern Kentucky University, worked more than 30 years in the federal postal inspection service. He was assigned to several cities -- his final position in Pittsburgh -- before taking an early retirement at age 50 and deciding to become a priest.

“The Lord starts working on you,'' Kruthaupt said. “He taps you on the shoulders and then hits you on the forehead with a two-by-four.''

Kruthaupt participated in programs for lay ministry in the Archdiocese of Baltimore before being transferred to Pittsburgh where he began serious contemplation about the priesthood.

Bishop Anthony Bosco, the late Greensburg bishop, gave his approval in December 2001 and with support from his family, Kruthaupt retired from his job two months later. In 2007, Kruthaupt earned a master of divinity degree from St. Vincent Seminary and was ordained a priest

by Bishop Lawrence E. Brandt. He was 55.

“It was extremely powerful,'' Kruthaupt said of his ordination.

“The whole family came. It was overwhelming.''

Kruthaupt served in Latrobe and Indiana before coming to Fayette County. Many people are happy to see a priest with so many life experiences but Kruthaupt acknowledged that each priest has his own gifts to share.

He noted, “Because you are faithful in prayer and serve his people, the Lord supports you.''

With ideas and eagerness, Kruthaupt is happy to be working in this area. He noted, "I love having an opportunity to do the Lord's work.''
