This week's Readings, like last Sunday’s, are about discipleship. Today we hear the account of the call of Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John from Mark's Gospel. These simple fishermen were called by the Lord to do his work, not only as his disciples, but to be counted among his 12 Apostles.

I'd like to share an anecdote. It's meant to be an account of what occurred following the Lord's death. He continued appearing to his disciples for forty days after he was raised from the dead. Jesus instructed and commissioned them to go and make disciples of the entire world, baptizing in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.

The anecdote continues with Jesus returning to heaven following his Ascension. He was greeted by the choirs of angels, the entire heavenly chorus. They said to him, "Lord, now that you have returned, who will continue your work on earth?" The Lord said, "I have a small group of men and women who love me, who will continue my work there." And the angels, looking at one another said, "But, Lord, what if they don't?"

Then Jesus responded, "I have no other plan."

This account is meant to dramatize that the Lord is looking to us, his disciples today, to continue his work. Those who have gone before us, the Apostles, the saints, the millions of people who followed the Lord, now look to us from the heavenly realm to continue Jesus’ work. Each of us is called in a unique way, based on our gifts, on our respective vocations, to be disciples of the Lord, literally, to be his hands and feet, to carry out his work.

Members of this faith community, in order to respond to the Lord's call, were commissioned at their Baptism, just as the Apostles were to help convert our world. We typically evangelize on behalf of the Lord not by what we say, but by how we live out our lives as witnesses to Christ. Our gathering each Sunday at Church as a faith community is part of our witness. As we gather, greet one another, participate in the Eucharist we are witnessing to the Lord. Participation in Mass is a powerful witness to our Faith. It is an expression of our desire to be in the Lord’s presence. As we grow in union with Jesus we respond more powerfully to his love which we have experienced in our life. We worship and praise him as a community of faith, thus making present his love for others by how we build up the Church,

Christ’s body.

I'd like to share another anecdote that might help to dramatize how faith works in our parishes. I'm a history buff; I like to read. One of the things I read not too long ago was about the Old West. You remember seeing the Westerns where a group of people would travel by stagecoach from one town to another. Sometimes they would encounter problems such as outlaws or Indian attacks. Perhaps a wheel or an axle would fail, or maybe there would be a hill too steep for the horses to pull up the coach.

The response required of the passengers depended on the type of ticket they held. If you had a first-class ticket, you could stay in the stagecoach. No matter what, you could just stay in your seat. You didn't have to get out of the coach or help. If you had a second-class ticket, you were required to get out of the stagecoach when a problem was encountered. Let's say a spoke on a wheel broke. You didn't have to help. You could just stand there and watch until the work was done; then you could return to your seat. However, if you had a third-class ticket, it was an entirely different story. Not only did you have to get out of the stagecoach, but you had to help lift or jack up the coach to put on the new wheel. You had to help push if it was stuck in the mud or on too steep of an incline. Those were the expectations of passengers based on the type of ticket they held.

In a parish you can’t have too many people with first-class or second-class tickets. We need many more who respond like they have a third-class ticket. We are striving to increase the number of parishioners who actively participate in the ministries of our parishes.

There is a whole array of ministries available. Last week in my homily I gave examples of how our parishioners are making immense contributions of their time and talent to support the parish. Take a look at the bulletin from January 17 to see a couple of images of their work. What is always true is that one of the most important contributions we can make is prayer. If you're physically unable to work in a ministry perhaps you're a prayer warrior.

You can pray on behalf of those who are ill in the parish. You could pray on behalf of the works of our Parishes. Do whatever the Lord is calling you to in his service. However, if you're physically able, come join us in one of the ministries. Your participation will be a witness to the Gospel, to truth.

Our First Reading was from the Book of Jonah. You remember God wanted him to go to the Assyrians and tell them to repent or be de-

stroyed. Jonah refused to go to Nineveh. He didn’t want any part of saving his enemy the Assyrians or of being a disciple. In order to hide from the Lord Jonah got on a boat and left Israel. But the Lord sent a large fish that brought him to the shore of Assyria and thus to Nineveh so that he could do the work the Lord had called him to do.

God has given us a free will so we can say "yes" or "no" to his call.

But when we hear his voice or experience an interior prompting, perhaps after receiving Communion or in personal prayer at home, we must respond. We must say our "yes" and strive to enter into deeper prayer. It's just like any other relationship we have such as with our spouse, a family member or a friend. Unless you're communicating, talking with them, you're not deriving the benefit of that relationship. It will flounder; it won't grow unless through our words or acts we demonstrate to the other person our love for them.

It's the same with the Lord. He calls each of us to say "yes" to him. In prayer, we have the opportunity to understand what he is asking us to do.

Then we exercise choice by saying "yes" or "no?"

I'd like to share a prayer that St. Teresa of Avila wrote, addressing the issue of discipleship.

Christ has no body on earth but yours; no hands, but yours; no feet, but yours.

Yours are the eyes through which he is to look out with compassion on our world.

Yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good.

Yours are the hands with which he is able to bless.

Each of us is to be a blessing, one to the other, witnessing to the love of God we have experienced in our lives. If we are witnesses to these truths for one another, the Body of Christ is strengthened.

Mother Teresa said, "A saint is someone who is a sinner, but continues to try, no matter what the obstacles that are encountered."

Each of us has a multitude of obstacles and difficulties that we encounter in our life, but the Lord says, "I am with you; I will strengthen you in this Eucharistic meal. I will enable you to go forth with love, with the necessary strength, to overcome those difficulties and obstacles, to proclaim my Name and to build my Kingdom."

Ash Wednesday Providing for the safety and welfare of the faithful has necessitated many modifications to our ritual practices. To reduce the risk of transmitting the coronavirus, it is not permitted this year to “sign” the faithful with ashes in the customary fashion. Rather, on Ash Wednesday the tradition of being marked with ashes will take place in a different fashion, through a Sprinkling with Ashes.

Sprinkling with Ashes is a custom observed in many countries throughout the world. The minister, using their thumb and index finger, secures a pinch of ashes from the vessel containing the ashes. Without using words, the minister then sprinkles these ashes on the heads of the recipients.

Through this ancient practice we witness to our intention to undertake penitential practices during these Lenten days. We join with the whole Church throughout the world in acknowledging our need for continuing conversion. We express our hope and firm conviction that through Christ’s victory over sin and death our tears shall one day be turned to rejoicing. See calendar for Mass and Ash distribution times.

Day of Prayer

On Friday, January 29th, we will have 8:00am Mass at St. Peter and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament followed by a Day of Prayer for Life.

Fr Marlon will expose the Blessed Sacrament following Mass for adoration and prayer on behalf of those attending the March and in support of Life from conception until natural death. Benediction and reposition of the Blessed Sacrament will occur at 4:00PM. Please consider showing your support for life through this small sacrifice of love. Faith Formation Starting Next Week Faith Formation classes will begin on January 31, 2021. Classes will be held in the social hall and the office to fulfill Social Distancing requirements and to bring our children back to continue their journey with God. All children over the age of three must wear a mask and parents must sign a Covid waiver per child prior to attendance. The waiver will be available on the church website, www.stpeterstcecilia.org. REV. JEREMIAH O’SHEA “In my retirement I want to use my preaching ability to bring education and a decent way of living to young and old, to be a channel of God’s great love to sponsors and sponsored alike.”

Ordained for the Diocese of Pittsburgh, Father Jerry O’Shea served as pastor of a parish in South Hills of Pittsburgh and as parochial vicar. Retiring from active ministry, he currently lives in the Diocese of Greensburg. He is founder and chaplain of a division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Greensburg, an Irish fraternal organization.

One of his most profound experiences during his years of priesthood was providing pastoral care for a man who, after being shot in a robbery, became a quadriplegic, yet has forgiven his attackers. Father O’Shea enjoys gardening, traveling, and participating in environmental programs.

Fr. O’Shea will be joining us on the weekend of January 30 & 31 to celebrate mass while Fr. Tim is away on the Pro-Life trip.

Pierogi Madness…

Homemade potato-cheese pierogies will be part of the offering again during the Lenten Fish Fry season. These ladies are members of the group of volunteers who have produced over 182 dozen homemade pierogies in three days, a phenomenal achievement!

St. Peter’s Fish Fry will start on Ash Wednesday February 17, and continue each Friday during Lent. We are serving take-out only due to COVID restrictions.

New this year is a breaded shrimp basket!
