This Sunday we celebrate the final feast of the Christmas season which is the Baptism of the Lord, and we heard from Matthew's Gospel his account of the Lord being baptized: . . . and the Spirit in the form of a dove came upon him and the voice from heaven, his Father, saying, "This is my beloved Son." Matt. 3:16-17 John the Baptist had attempted to prevent Jesus from participating in his baptism of repentance. John had told Jesus “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?” Jesus insisted and John baptized him. What a dramatic exchange. Luke’s baptism account doesn’t include the dialog between John and Jesus only the reference to the Father’s voice from heaven and the Spirit in the form of a dove. Mark’s account of the baptism is quite similar to Luke’s.

John’s Gospel account of the baptism is significantly different from the other three Evangelists.

John’s Gospel adds another element concerning the Baptist’s response to Jesus presenting himself at the Jordan. Twice the Gospel passage references the fact that John the Baptist said 'I did not know him," which is interesting in that John and Jesus were cousins.

However, the Gospel account speaks not to the fact that they didn’t literally know one another, but of the revelation the Baptist received concerning whomever the Spirit would rest upon would be the Messiah, the Promised One, the One who was to come, the very Son of God. So John the Baptist was able to testify that the Spirit came down upon Jesus and that He is thus the Son of God. Our respective baptisms were not as dramatic as Jesus’.

However, we also have been commissioned, as the Lord Jesus was at his baptism, to go forth and

proclaim to the world the Good News. If you remember from our first reading, Isaiah spoke while with the people of Israel in exile in Babylon. It was six hundred years before the Lord's birth, having been inspired by the Father saying, "You are my servant, Israel, through whom I show my glory.

Now the Lord has spoken, who formed me as his servant in my mother's womb, and he has told me, 'I will make you the light of the nations that my salvation may be known through the whole world."

Isaiah was speaking to the people, he was speaking to them individually of their call; he was speaking to Israel, corporately, as a people, and he was prophesying about the Messiah who would come and would accomplish his purpose of proclaiming the Father's plan of salvation to the whole world.

As Jesus entered into our world, the Incarnate Word made flesh, he became our brother. We, his brothers and sisters, have been elevated into sonship in the Father by Jesus entering our humanity. Each of us following our birth came to be baptized, we entered into the waters, just as the people Israel were baptized as they entered the Red Sea, fleeing from the bondage of Egypt. They entered amidst the waters, symbolically, into their death, but rose up on the other side to life and freedom as God’s chosen people.

We entered into the water, symbolically entering into the depth—not to escape slavery or bondage, but to blot out original sin, and we were raised up again with Our Lord.

Our baptism replicates Jesus death and resurrection.

The commissioning that we received at our Baptism, like Jesus’ anointing by the Holy Spirit, calls us to go forward, just as the Lord did, to proclaim that Good News. God created each of us for a powerful purpose that he established before the beginning of time.

We are intended to accomplish something on his behalf. Our commissioning not only at the time of our Baptism, but recommitted to each

Sunday, as we gather around the Lord's table impels us to go forth in Jesus’ Spirit of service. We are strengthened by his body and blood. At the end of Mass, we are sent forth with our commission to do his work renewed. We do that work initially within the context of our family, with the members of our faith community and then out in the broader world, depending on our individual vocation. But we, too, in varying degrees, are to become that light to the nations.

I'm sure that you're all aware that January 22nd is the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision. So once again, 500,000 – 600,000 people of faith seeking to be the light of our nation, will gather in Washington, D.C. later that week to March for Life. Those that gather will speak to this issue in an effort to remind our nation that each human is formed in the womb by our loving Father's hand, that all were created for a specific purpose in the image of our loving God. The March is intended to reawaken our national conscience that we should not thwart God’s purpose, his intention for which the child was created.

Our own parish will be represented at the March by a group traveling with Fr. Tim. We'll go down January 23 the day before the March to attend the Vigil Mass for Life at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. On the following morning, we will participate in the Mass to close the Vigil and then join in the March. Not all of us are able to go, but each of us, in a spirit of prayer, can support this yearly initiative. If the Spirit of the Living God is moving you to public witness concerning the value of human life, please call the office and let Shannon know you would like to join Fr. Tim and our fellow parishioners at the March.

Make a Difference, Become a Knight!

The Historic Church of St. Peter has joined forces with Republic Volunteer Fire Company to sponsor a Super Cash Bash. Proceeds will benefit both organizations. A $20 ticket grants admission, a three-digit number, dinner and drinks and a chance to win $500 pulled every 15 minutes for four hours. Last drawing of the night is a grand prize of $5,000 taken from the 7PM PA Lottery drawing.

Alternatives.Yes announces pro-life essay contest

Sixth- through eighth-graders are invited to submit entries for the annual pro-life essay contest sponsored by Alternatives.Yes pregnancy support center, Connellsville. Students living in or going to school in Westmoreland and Fayette counties are eligible. This year’s theme is “All Human Life is Beautiful.” Entries must be 300-500 words, typed, doublespaced, with name, grade, phone number, address and school name on a separate page or the back of the essay.

DECEMBER 29 2019 - OPEN HOUSE/TOUR Bishop Malesic I wanted to bring you up to date on the status of our new facility. Last week we received a "Use Permit" from the Brownsville Borough inspection authority. This is not an "Occupancy Permit" however we are permitted to utilize the building with the exception of the Kitchen and Mezzanine level. .... We should be able to acquire an occupancy permit following our next inspection. .... Our parishioners will be completing the build out of the Mezzanine over the next five or six months. .... Hopefully, we'll be able to have a formal dedication sometime in early May. ....

Yesterday we gave the parishioners an opportunity to walk through and view the interior of the building. The members of our Society of Catholic Women provided some finger food and drinks. It was a wonderful experience.

Everyone who attended expressed their appreciation for the workmanship and the reality the parishioners will now have a place to gather. Thank you so much for your support for this project. ... Starting with Lenten fish fries we will begin fund raising to ensure all loaned funds are repaid. ... Once again thank you and a blessed New Year for you and your staff.

Would you consider joining Fr. Tim and fellow parishioners as we journey to Washington, DC, for the March for Life? Parish records indicate that, in the past, significant numbers would join the yearly pilgrimage to DC as witnesses for Life. Perhaps you were one and would like to attend again.

We will depart from The Historic Church of St. Peter parking lot on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 10:00 a.m. and return by late evening Friday.

On Thursday evening we will attend the Pro-Life Vigil Mass at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. It is an amazing experience as 8,000 - 10,000 faithful Catholics participate in the liturgy in this beautiful Basilica. It is the seventh largest Church in the world with 50 side altars honoring the Blessed Mother. The Mass is broadcast on EWTN. On Friday, January 24, we will participate in the March and related events. The actual March is just over one mile long, up Constitution Ave., past the Capitol Building to the Supreme Court.
