HOME DECORATING TIPS FOR A WARM AND INVITING WINTER
As the colder months approach, it’s time to transform your home into a cosy haven that offers respite from the chilly weather outside. Winter is the perfect season to embrace warmth, comfort and a touch of elegance in your home decor. In this article, we will share some inspiring tips and ideas to help you create a welcoming and inviting ambiance that will make your home a sanctuary during the winter months.
1. Layer With Textiles: One of the simplest and most effective ways to add warmth to your home is by layering textiles. Swap lightweight summer fabrics with plush throws, thick blankets, and soft cushions in rich, textured materials. Opt for warm colours such as deep burgundy, earthy tones, or classic neutrals to create a cosy atmosphere.
2. Embrace Soft Lighting: During the darker days of winter, lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood. Replace harsh overhead lights with softer, warmer lighting options. Incorporate table lamps, floor lamps and string lights to create a gentle glow. Consider using candles or flameless LED candles for a soothing and inviting ambiance.
3. Introduce Winter-inspired Colours and Patterns: Infuse your home with winter-inspired colours and patterns to create a visual connection with the season. Consider using tartan, plaid, or houndstooth patterns in upholstery, rugs, or curtains. Deep blues, forest greens and warm metallic accents can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your decor.
4. Cosy Up Your Seating Areas: Make your seating areas extra cosy by incorporating
oversized, comfortable furniture. Sink into plush armchairs or sofas adorned with soft cushions. Enhance the warmth and comfort with a luxurious area rug underfoot, providing an inviting space to curl up with a book or gather with loved ones.
5. Create a Winter Wonderland: Embrace the beauty of winter by incorporating seasonal elements into your decor. Place bowls filled with cinnamon sticks or dried citrus fruits to add a delightful fragrance.
6. Warm up Your Floors: Cold floors can make a room feel chilly, so consider adding rugs or carpets to provide insulation and warmth. Opt for thick, soft rugs with high pile to create a cosy feeling underfoot. Choose patterns or colours that complement your overall decor and bring a sense of comfort to the space.
7. Bring Nature Inside: Despite the colder weather, nature can still play a significant role in your winter decor. Fill vases with winter blooms, such as lavender or primrose.
With these home decor tips, you can transform your living space into a warm and inviting retreat during the winter season. Embrace the elements of cosiness, comfort and elegance to create a haven where you can relax, unwind and enjoy the beauty of winter. By incorporating layers of textiles, soft lighting, seasonal colours, and nature-inspired elements, you’ll create a space that truly embodies the essence of winter and ensures a cosy and stylish sanctuary for you and your loved ones.

Noosa Open Studios is a non-for-profit organisation run by artists and for artists. Its main mission is to showcase the rich and diverse art produced in the region and assist artists to develop their careers further.
Noosa Shire attracts and inspires artists. Across the region, hinterland and coast, 100-plus local artists are busily working away to ensure they are ready for the 2023 Noosa Open Studios art trail. NOS 2023 President Simone Leao is leading this unique event, now in its eighth year, which will run from 6-15 October 2023 with many new and exciting artists joining the trail this year.
“The NOS art trail is always popular with locals, artists and visitors alike as it brings people together – with creativity the central drawcard,” Simone said. “For our artists, this event provides a platform for them to meet the art-loving public and share their creative passions,” she added. “For our visitors, it provides a once-a-year opportunity to get a glimpse into the private working studios of artists practicing a wide range of styles, mediums and subjects. It is also a chance for art lovers to begin or continue their art journey and hopefully take home an art piece of their own.”
This year Noosa Open Studios is proud to announce the support of local chef and ‘food artist’ Matt Golinski, who is the event patron. “Growing up in an artistic family, I discovered cooking, and for the past 30 or so years I have had the privilege of creating my own kind of art using the incredible palette of ingredients that I’m surrounded by in this beautiful region I call home,” said Matt. Simone noted, “Working with Matt combines both of these creative areas and we hope this partnership is the beginning of a collaborative interaction for our event.” The love for art and food across the picturesque landscapes of Noosa is a perfect match for locals and visitors in the Noosa Shire during the Noosa Open Studios event this October.
Noosa Open Studios will run over two weekends and five weekdays. All studios will be open each weekend, with selective trails open each weekday. Five trails across the Noosa Shire will be available and art lovers can “choose their own” art adventure – from the beaches to the hinterland through to local towns and villages. Simone reminded visitors the best way to enjoy the trail was to pick up an early copy of the NOS art trail guide – available in hard copy and online – to begin selecting the artists they wish to visit. “The NOS art trail guide is always in high demand when it comes out in early September as it previews all our participating artists and for many it is the beginning of the art trail journey.”
Wallace House, Noosaville – the historic home of Noosa Arts and Crafts Association and the birthplace of Noosa Open Studios – remains the ‘event hub’ over the ten days of the trail. From here you can view an extensive exhibition of artwork from all participating artists and gather tips from the knowledgeable volunteers before setting off on the trail. In early September (1-10 September 2023) an exhibition of NOS artists’ work will be available at The Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre. This is the perfect place to get a sneak peek of the artists who will be on the trail. This venue will also hold the Fundraising Event undertaken by the Noosa Open Studios volunteer committee and members. This year, artists will be placing their designs on aprons – an item shared by artists and chefs – all of which will be auctioned as part of the event fundraising.
Noosa Open Studios remains the largest art trail in Queensland with over 100 artists and many visitors returning year after year to purchase artwork and see the new and emerging talent in our region. This event is made possible by the ongoing support of Noosa Shire Council, Tourism Noosa, and generous sponsors, including Hinternoosa. Noosa Open Studios is grateful for the patronage of local food artist Matt Golinski for the 2023 event.
Located in the heart of Doonan, The Yard and Doonan Valley Garden Centre is the complete one-stop shop landscaping and garden centre supplying an extensive range of landscaping supplies such as soil, mulch, gravel, sand, pebble, rocks, pavers, pots, plants and so much more.
“I know! Why don’t we buy the garden centre?” It was late 2019 and after years of working in the corporate world including three years in Bangkok, Tinbeerwah locals David Callachor and Sarah Hansen were looking for the next chapter. By mid 2020, during the early days of the pandemic, the deal was signed and they committed to purchase the Doonan Valley Garden Centre, which had been operating at the same site for over 30 years. They weren’t the only ones wondering what they were taking on in such uncertain times, but within a short time the garden centre was injected with Sarah’s vision…. to create the type of garden centre that was sorely lacking at the northern end of the Sunshine Coast.
It was quickly filled with an extensive range of plants suitable for both acreage and suburban gardens, as well as becoming the place to go for a unique range of pots, planters and other garden ornaments, as Sarah drew on contacts made during their time in Asia. This part of the garden centre is known as ‘Seadragon Style’ and is the only source of these handcrafted and hand painted pots in Australia.
As a veracious self-taught gardener and ‘hort’, who spent much of her time in Thailand wandering the plant markets, parks and gardens, Sarah also eagerly shared her knowledge with newcomers to the Coast, many of whom were unfamiliar with gardening in our subtropical climate and from this, a consultancy service also began to evolve.
With momentum gathering, 18 months later the opportunity to purchase “The Yard “came along. It just made sense - the synergies were obvious and so David and Sarah jumped at the opportunity and as a result have created the largest landscaping yard and garden centre in the region with the objective to become a one stop shop for home gardeners, landscapers and other construction trades.
David and Sarah are almost there - The Yard and Doonan Valley Garden Centre have been transformed and it’s not just the newly spruced up and unmissable street frontage.
At the garden centre you’ll find a huge range of indoor and outdoor plants including tropicals, temperate, ornamentals, natives and edibles, contemporary, traditional and eclectic pots, planters and ornaments as well as fertilisers, treatments, bagged potting media….the list goes
on! And if it isn’t in stock Sarah will draw upon her years in procurement and track it down for you.
The garden centre staff are hugely knowledgeable and all with their own areas of interest and expertise so don’t be afraid to ask – if they can’t give you the answer straight away, they’ll research it and get back to you.
Over at The Yard there are more than 80 bunkers of bulk products including sands, soils, mulches, pebbles, gravel, construction and landscape rock as well as their own range of custom soil and mulch blends - The Platinum Range.
Landscaping products also include an extensive range of cement and natural stone pavers and steppers, feature rocks, bagged decorative pebbles, bagged concrete/cement, fertilisers, turf care, garden edging and more. Now that winter is here, core ten steel fire pits have just arrived and don’t forget bulk or bagged firewood!
A fleet of four tipper trucks and three utes mean products can be delivered to you in an efficient and timely manner from one cubic metre up to 13 tonne. Deliveries are available seven days a week and if you are unsure of what will and won’t fit on the truck, be sure to give the team a call to discuss your needs. The Yard staff also offer a wealth of local experience and knowledge to answer any questions when looking for advice. So whether you are looking to do a full garden makeover, a little bit of yard maintenance or purchase a gift for someone special, the team at Doonan Valley Garden Centre and The Yard are there to assist.
If you are looking at selling your current house or have just made a new purchase in the area, the team at The Yard and Doonan Valley Garden Centre can help you to make your garden makeover something special. A delivery of mulch can make all the difference in the appearance of your garden as well as some strategically placed plants or pots.
You can follow the Doonan Valley Garden Centre and The Yard on social media to keep up to date with what’s going on, what’s in stock, tips, tricks and new products.
