From our Associate Pastor of Music and Discipleship In the book of Hosea, God tells Hosea, a prophet, to go and marry a harlot/ promiscuous woman/an unfaithful wife who ends up getting herself into all kinds of predicaments. She sells herself for sexual pleasure, and Hosea is told by God to go and buy her back. While this did happen, it’s also an example of how Israel had profaned the name of God in their worship. The Israelites had turned to idolatry, often referred to as Baal worship, the religion of the Canaanites. In our study of the book of Hosea, the question came up: Why is Baal worship so attractive? Researching this I came across an article by Kevin DeYoung on The Gospel Coalition (thegospelcoalition.org) website. He quotes Doug Stewart in the New American Commentary (Exodus) as giving the following reasons why Baal worship (idolatry) is so attractive: “It was guaranteed. It was selfish. It was easy. It was convenient. It was normal. It was logical. It was pleasing to the senses. It was indulgent. It was erotic.” If you would like to read the article in full, visit https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/kevin-deyoung/the-attraction-of-idolatry. So you must be thinking, “Where are you going with this, Josh?” When you look at the reasons that idolatry and Baal worship were so attractive to the Israelites, you find that they are not that far removed from us! In our pursuit of worldly things (Hosea refers to this as futility), even religion (watch out!), we want something that is guaranteed to to help us (just because we say or do the right thing), something that’s all about us, something we can do on our own time, something everybody else is doing, something that seems like it makes sense, something we get pleasure from doing, something that is indulgent, and sometimes, something that is erotic. The pursuit of all of this is futile. God desires a RELATIONSHIP with his people, but He must be first in our lives. Let’s resolve to change our pursuit of worldly things to a pursuit of the Creator who loves us and sent His only Son, Jesus, to die for our sins. God is doing great things on the Hill. Will you join Him in our mission to Praise, Proclaim, and Pursue Jesus Christ?

Help spread the Good News of God’s love to children in need! By packing a shoebox full of simple gifts and sending it off with prayer, you can be part of transforming entire families and communities around the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Many recipients also go on to participate in the 12-lesson follow-up Bible study course, The Greatest Journey. Shoeboxes and guidelines for packing are available at the church. Drop off no later than November 11.

Dear Hillview Family, Suzanne and I are honored, most blessed, and privileged to be on this journey with you. As I begin as Pastor of Hillview, I want you to know that you are very dear to us already. As we look forward, we are excited and full anticipation of the Great Things the Lord will do with us, through us, and for us. King David said in Psalm 56:9b “This I know, that God is for me.” I do ask you to pray for me and Suzanne, Hillview, and for God’s Will for us all. May the Good Lord bless, keep, and guide us in the days ahead.

In Him, Donald and Suzanne Philippians 1:6
