By Brad Clouse This is what the LORD says to me with his strong hand upon me, warning me not to follow the way of this people: “Do not call conspiracy everything this people calls a conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it. The LORD Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread.” (Isaiah 8:11-13) With the coming invasion of Assyria, the Lord reminds Isaiah to put his complete trust in Him. Instead of fearing conspiracies and threats, fear God. This is a timely reminder for us as God’s people today. We live in a culture that has totally dismissed the fear of God. Just notice how many flippantly take God’s name in vain. In some circles, mocking God is a form of acceptance. Understand that to live without a fear of God is to live recklessly. Whenever people live recklessly, bad things happen.

As Christians, we must live with a healthy fear of God. The psalmist tells us that “Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in obedience to him” (Psalm 128:1). It is Solomon who writes that “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7). The question then is: How do we develop a healthy fear of God? We are driven to fear God and walk in obedience to Him by meeting with Him regularly.

This is what our Lord invites us to do: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). We meet with Him regularly by drawing close to Him through His holy Word and through prayer.

By meeting with God regularly we will grow in our awareness of His holiness and love. We will also be reminded of His great promises to us.

Andrew Strom writes: “Know your HOLY GOD intimately (When you have seen His glory, His holiness and His love – by drawing close to Him in prayer – then you can usually see through any counterfeits because you know the ‘real thing’ so well).” We are to regard the Lord as holy. He is to be feared. He is to be obeyed. Let us not be reckless people; rather, let us meet with God regularly.

“Any God who can’t reach you, can’t help you. Any God who can’t get to you, can’t bless you. Any God who can no longer judge, can no longer heal. Any God who is not worthy of my respect is not worthy of my obedience.” (Jeff Walling) “And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the LORD’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?” (Deuteronomy 10:12-13)

In this edition of The Hillsboro Christian, Adam reminds us that one of the primary ways we show our love to God is by obeying His commands.

Also, Micah challenges us to step into our calling – to not miss the opportunity of service that God has placed before us.

Our guest contributor is Jim Newman, missionary to Australia. We are delighted that he and his wife Becky are visiting for the summer from the mission field. He has some encouraging words on how to approach our life day to day in the broken world with fearless obedience.

What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. I was listening to what is called “talkback radio” in Australia.

A distraught older man phoned in to lament the current situation in the world and how everything seems to be falling apart. With obvious pain and fear in his voice, he said that his main concern was with his adult daughter, who was living a life far different from how she had been raised. Then the man said, “With the way the world is going, I’m glad I’m old and won’t have to live in it too much longer.”

The world he has known for the past several decades is gone and has been replaced with one that is often angry, dangerous, and unpredictable. What he thought were the foundations of society had crumbled. The illusion of safety and stability on which he had built his life had disappeared.

I don’t know how you feel about the future and if you are optimistic or pessimistic. Of course, I am not talking about eternity. We all look forward to being with the Lord, but how do you approach your life from day to day in this broken world? May I suggest that we approach our lives with fearless obedience?

In 1 Peter 3:13-17, we find these words: 13 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good?

14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness sake, you

will be blessed.

Have no fear of them, nor be troubled,

15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil.

This letter was penned by the Apostle Peter about the year AD 65 and addressed those Peter calls the “elect exiles of the dispersion."

The idea is that Christians are foreigners, exiles, strangers, or pilgrims in this world. This is because our real citizenship is in heaven and not here on earth.

In just a few short years after Peter wrote, Christians would be accused of burning Rome. Some would be martyred. They would be persecuted when they refused to say that Caesar is Lord, instead proclaiming that Christ was Lord. But to

these Christians Peter writes, “Don’t be afraid.”

Doing good, Peter teaches, brings less strife and less suffering in this world most of the time. Doing good is not just an occasional kind deed but rather a lifestyle of acting morally upright. Our faith is to be active as we honor Christ as holy, defend why we live in faith and obedience and do good to others. We are not just standing back and absorbing the blows of the enemy; we are faithfully serving obediently, knowing God loves us, understands our trials, and hears our prayers.

Peter uses the word zealous to describe our desire to do good and to be obedient to our calling. This is a strong word that means doing good must be a consuming desire for us. Our time, talents, and efforts are committed to doing good. We seek to obediently do good because we love God and love people.

Second, Peter writes, Don’t Be Afraid because Even if you Suffer, You will be Blessed.

Persecution does sometimes come to Christians. Even in these times, Peter teaches that Christians don’t need to be afraid because we are blessed if we suffer for righteousness’ sake.

For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer.

A Pakistani preacher I know wrote recently, “Pakistani Christians can be threatened, kicked out of their job, and even die for Christ, but they aren’t all that afraid.” These people, he said, are helping me to trust God. This man lives with his wife and two young daughters and preaches faithfully in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. And people are coming to Christ, even though it means suffering and maybe even death.

But notice again what Peter wrote in verse 14, But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled.”

The NASB translates the latter part of this verse, “AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED.” The idea is: “Do not fear their threats.” Do not fear them when they try to intimidate you.

There is no doubt that the last few years have changed how we view the world and our own country. There is so much going wrong that fear can be a natural reaction. We, however, have faith that the God who loves us is true to His word. So, don’t be afraid.

In 1 Peter 3:12, the Apostle Peter quotes from Psalm 34, “For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."

We can live our lives in fearless obedience because God loves us, hears our prayers, and will one day take us to live with Him forever.

'Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, I will go, but if you will not go with me, I will not go.” And she said, “I will surely go with you. Nevertheless, the road on which you are going will not lead to your glory, for the Lord will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.” Then Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kedesh.'

Judges 4:8-9 (ESV)

Have you ever put a condition on your response to God’s calling? That’s a difficult question to ponder. In the above passage from the book of Judges, Deborah brings to the army leader, Barak, a command from God to fight the enemies of Israel. But, as we see above, Barak is too afraid to go into the calling without the representative of the Lord coming with him.

The things that distract There are so many possibilities for this, but I have to ponder how often I have found reasons not to do what the Spirit is moving me to do. How many times have I felt moved to speak truth and shied away because I’m worried about the response? How many times have I been called into major choices which would require faith and trust in the God who is calling me and instead chosen comfort.

On a smaller scale the concept holds true in other areas of life. If I do not step out and trust what I know to be true, I run the risk of never being able to grow. If I never take off the training wheels, I will never be able to ride well. If I never let go of the floats in the pool, I will never be able to swim well. If I never let the bumpers to be moved off the lane, I will never be able to bowl well.

God is never going to stop moving, but if we do not step in and trust him to work through us, we will never be a part of his victory. Barak’s victory was handed over to a slave girl who actually took the life of Israel’s enemy. The kingdom of Heaven will never fail in its march on the gates of Hell on this earth. But if we do not chose to be active participants in the battle the victory will be handed to another.

Our Lampstand In Revelation, chapter 2, the church in Ephesus was being directly called out by Heaven for losing sight of their primary calling. “Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent” (2:5 ESV).

We have got to pay close attention church. We have to pay attention to what we are called by the Spirit of God. If we do not step into our calling, the commission will be assigned to another who will serve.

The day-to-day of life can be distracting from the ultimate reality. While we go about our business and busy -ness we have got to maintain a connection to the deeper reality that we are soldiers in the midst of the war.

If we do not step into the commission that is given us, in the same way that Barak’s victory as handed to another, God will do his work through another.

Fearless Obedience So what will we choose? This is the essence of fearless obedience. We are called to build bridges of grace that bear the weight of truth here in Hillsboro and Highland County. We never know when ministry opportunities will be set directly before us. Maybe it will be a brother or sister in Christ who is in desperate need.

Will we stop and give help? Maybe it will be someone who is lost in life that needs direction. Will we step out of our comfort and into their mess? Maybe it will be a moment when none surrounding will stand for truth and the cross of Jesus. Will we make our solitary stand?

Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ (Matthew 25:34-40 ESV) May we be counted among those who stepped into the mess and are gathered into the kingdom of Heaven!

We are planning this year to again send over 500 boxes as part of Operation Christmas Child. Each of these boxes will bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to a child and then to their families and into the communities these children live in.

Many of these communities have never heard the great news of God's love and His provision of Jesus Christ to save man from his sinful nature.

In these boxes, school supplies are of great need; they allow a child the privilege to have supplies to help them learn.

We like to put a box of 24 or fewer crayons in the boxes for 2-4-year old kids and 5-9-years old. In the 10-14-year-old boxes, we like to put colored pencils. We also put regular pencils, pink erasers, child scissors, and pencil sharpeners in the older boxes.

If anyone would like to buy supplies, we will have baskets/boxes sitting out to collect the supplies. Money donations will help also. Please place them in an envelope marked "Shoeboxes" and put them in the giving boxes.

Special Notice: On August 5,6 and 7, school supplies will be on sale and Tax exempt.
