“The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who testifies to everything he saw – that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.” (Revelation 1:1-3)
“… the fundamental truths of Revelation… are available to anyone who will read the book for its overall message and resists the temptation to become overly enamored with the details.” (Robert Mounce)
The very first verses of Revelation guarantee a blessing to those who read it, hear it, and take it to heart. This is the only book of the Bible that makes such a promise. Sadly, it is kept at a distance by so many. But if we keep this book at a distance, then we are keeping God’s blessing at a distance. In fact, there are seven beatitudes found in the book of Revelation, starting with what we read in 1:1-3. The other beatitudes are found as follows:
Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.” (14:13)
“Look, I come like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.” (16:15)
Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.” (19:9)
Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years. (20:6)
“Look, I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy written in this scroll.” (22:7)
“Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city.” (22:14)
These beatitudes affirm us as believers of the hope that we have in Jesus Christ. Let us no longer make the mistake of keeping the book of Revelation at a distance. Rather, let us read it, hear it, and take it to heart.
Jesus is alive; He is victorious; and in Him, we are never without hope.
In Christian love, Brad
