THE HILLSBORO CHRISTIAN

“The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who testified to everything he saw – that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.” (Revelation 1:1-3)

The apostle Paul in his second letter to Timothy, tells us that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (II Timothy 3:16). In his farewell address to the Ephesian elders, Paul reminded these believers of his call to proclaim to them “the whole will of God” (Acts 20:27). The book of Revelation is most certainly part of the whole will of God. It has been given to us through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and is useful to us as believers.

So why do we go out of our way to avoid it? One reason we avoid it is because it is not an easy book to understand. Martin Luther believed that this book ought to be kicked out of the Bible because it doesn’t reveal anything. John Calvin wrote commentaries for 65 of the 66 books of the Bible, with the exception being the book of Revelation. But just because something is not easy to understand doesn’t mean that it isn’t important. Another reason we avoid it is because it has been so abused. There is no other book of the Bible that has sparked more obsession and strange teaching than this book.

The very first verses of Revelation guarantee a blessing to those who read it, hear it, and take it to heart. So, as we begin 2024, we are going to take a journey together through this book in a series entitled REVELATION OF HOPE. The goal of this series is to be assured that our hope is in Jesus Christ, who is alive and victorious: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades” (Revelation 1:18). And all of God’s people said, “Amen!” Also, starting this new year, we will be providing a weekly bulletin that will include announcements as well as a place to take notes during the sermon. Each week, there will be a daily reading plan that corresponds with the sermon and Through the Word content. Our prayer is that our knowledge of God’s Word will deepen our relationships with Christ and one another.

Another announcement that we want you to be aware of regards our newsletter The Hillsboro Christian. Starting in 2024, our newsletter will be in condensed form. However, it will continue to provide upcoming announcements for the entire month as well as the prayer list.

God bless you all! In Christian love, Brad
