Well Christmas is nearly here, another month has past and our weather is heating up. Bring on our northland summer and a chance to head to one of our lovely beaches or just relax on holiday. Remember in this weather you need to hydrate regularly we humans need fluid to stay healthy in the sun and heat. The grass and vegetation is drying out and as we look to get the property ready for our influx of Christmas visitors. We need to be careful as we burn off our rubbish. Please always have a safe escape route as you burn, also a water source you can use if needed. Stay in attendance while at the fire while you burn all these things will help keep you and your family safe. There is no such thing as a controlled burn fire is controlled only by mother nature so if things look like they are getting out of hand call 111 and ask for the fire service. better to be safe than sorry. School holidays are just around the corner and with it comes our children home and out and about on our streets please keep an eye out for the little ones as they move around our streets. As our boarder between us and Auckland opens up this month we will see an influx of holiday makers in our communities. Along with this comes the greater risk of Covid 19 so don’t forget your masks. We are required to wear these at all calls that we deem necessary. Yes, we will be doing the lolly run on Christmas eve it is and will always be part of who we are as a community and we look forward to seeing you out there. Santa may not be in his usual sleigh this year but riding in a fire appliance, but be assured he will have lollies and a wave for everyone. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our brigades fire fighters who turn out every time that siren goes off. They are an awesome bunch of ordinary people doing an extraordinary job of looking after us in our times of need. Sue and I are proud to call them our friends and fellow fire fighters. Thank you team for an awesome effort in a year that hasn’t always been easy.

There were always street festivals and public events happening in our little village. In 1912 Evelyn Coutts became the Carnival Queen in Hikurangi, Hilda Pearson was second. This year though because of the pandemic the Christmas parade was unfortunately cancelled. We all hope that next year will be better. The museum team wishes everyone a good Christmas break with your family and friends. We would like to thank you again for your support. We have lots of plans for the future, with your help we can keep our heritage alive. The museum will be closed from the 24th of December until the 7th of January. Otherwise please feel free to visit us during the summer, we are open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 10-11.30am or by appointment. hikurangi.museum@gmail.com, Facebook (Hikurangi Historical Museum)

HIKURANGI POLICE

Policeman Pete Today as I write this Bulletin piece, it is the first day of December and we are bracing for the anticipated onslaught and high demand through the festive season. Lisa and I have been busy as it is, we know what’s coming with summer and Covid combined. The major issue we face as a community especially our coastal members is the expected influx of Aucklanders to the beaches of Northland this month. They bring the family, the pets, the boat, Caravan, and plenty of spending power, which is all well and good, it’s the Covid we don’t want coming north. The manned police borders are coming down on the 15 th of December at Te Hana, Wellsford. To get to Northland you must be either double vaccinated and/or show evidence of receiving a negative test 72 hours prior to departure. Of course, given that Auckland has the greatest community transmission rate in the country Northland is feeling vulnerable and unsafe with the announcement. Planning is underway however, for Northland Police to continue fixed stand up checkpoints south of Whangarei to keep Northland safe post 15 December. Visitors travelling into the district can expect to be stopped and checked to ensure they meet the requirements. The thin blue line is again going to be stretched in order to meet this demand. Whether Lisa and I do some shifts on the border to help out is probable, so we wait and see. To ensure we are not over-run with calls to coastal areas to check Aucklanders this summer, I can assure you they will be arriving having been checked at our checkpoints long before they start unpacking. Spot checks are another measure we are employing, let’s be honest you can pick an Aucklander a mile away, it may be them complaining about all the attention they are getting on the way through. On the flip side if cars are arriving in the early hours at batches, I am smelling a rat. A call through on the 105-reporting number would be recommended for a follow up visit from us. Mobile reassurance units will be out and about through our hotspots including Oakura, Whananaki areas and Sandy Bay through to Ngunguru which is our policing area. Let’s be hospitable to our visitors which has always been the Northland way. They have been locked down for some time and again let’s benefit from all that money they bring in. This summer is looking like a scorcher so hit those beaches, enjoy our backyard playgrounds, and keep the whanau safe throughout. We all have to continue the requirements under our current Red Light and do our best to encourage friends and whanau to get vaccinated to get us to Orange. From both Lisa and I have a fantastic Christmas and New Year keep it real and show these Aucklanders the Northland hospitality. Stay safe out there. Senior Constables Pete & Lisa.
