Hikurangi Police Policeman Pete

Greetings all, the start of my Bulletin piece today is a quick reminder to everyone of the appropriate numbers to ring for police assistance whether it be an emergency or to report a matter that is historic or non-emergency. The reason I am doing this is because of the large number of calls coming directly to my own personal work phone and that of Lisa’s. The vast amount of these calls seems to occur when I am off duty and subsequently the caller won’t receive a reply especially when it’s a number unknown. The nature of the job means that our downtime is precious and once we get into the dangerous territory of being available 24/7 the problems start stacking up.

I have learnt to put the work phone down on my downtime and step away. This is vital to our piece of mind and dear I say it health.

It would be horrible for all if the first number called was mine for a serious matter with a time delay resulting when the emergency number should always be the first.

So, here’s the reminder.

An emergency is an incident that is happening, is serious and the immediate need for assistance is required be it Police, Fire or Ambulance. This is a 111 call which will be answered quickly, and details taken and loaded live.

If Lisa or I or even occasionally both of us are working, it will come directly to us to respond through the right channels. If we are not working, outside of our shifts Whangarei will respond to the job. This is rated a P1 (priority one) and the resources are sent based on the details given.

An historic matter or non-emergency is generally an event that has happened and is being reported. The nature of the event is possibly less serious, but the overriding thing is people or property are safe and police will attend, if necessary, based on the details. Sometimes a phone call from us is sufficient. The number to call is 105 or on line www.police.govt.nz/use-105.

Examples for the 105 calls are:

Historic burglaries or thefts, stolen vehicles.

Damage to property Threats to person or property

Suspicious Behaviour in your area

Fraud matters

We do our utmost to attend all calls for service whether an emergency or non-emergency and enjoy the face-toface side of the job. The trust and confidence or our communities play a huge part of who we are and where we want to be.

Take care out there catch up soon.

How Can Anyone Resist A face Like This!!!!

CAULI & PASTA CHEESE

Ingredients:

2 cups small spiral pasta

1 small cauliflower cut in 3cm florets 250gms sour cream 1/2 cup milk

1 tbspn Dijon style mustard 2 cups grated tasty cheese 2 medium tomatoes, sliced 4-6 rashers streaky bacon

Method:

Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil. Add the pasta and boil for 5 minutes. Add cauli florets and boil for about 8 mins, until the cauli and pasta are al dente. Drain well. Add the sour cream, milk, mustard and 2/3 of the cheese. Stir over a low heat until the cheese begins to melt. Tip into a baking dish. Top with the sliced tomatoes and sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Meanwhile preheat the grill. Twist each slice of the bacon and place on a small oven rack. Grill until crispy. Place on top of the pasta mixture and grill until golden and bubbling.

The Clock that Chimed Too Many Times

The other night I was invited out for a night with the boys. I told my wife that I would be home by midnight...promise! Well the hours passed and the beer was going down to easy, at around 2.30am drunk as a skunk, I headed home. Just as I got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hall started up and cuckooed three times. Quickly, I realised she’d probably wake up, so I cuckooed another nine times. I was really proud of myself having a quickwitted solution, even when smashed, to escape a possible conflict. The next morning my wife asked me what time I got in and I told her twelve o’clock. She didn’t seem disturbed at all. Whew! Got away with that one! She then told me that we needed a new cuckoo clock. When I asked her why she said, well, last night our clock cuckooed three times, then said oops, cuckooed four more times, cleared its throat, cuckooed another three times, giggled and cuckooed twice more.

Donation: Today a man knocked on my door and asked for a small donation towards the local swimming pool. I gave him a glass of water.

Hikurangi Historical Museum

Recently, the Hikurangi Freemasons Lodge building on Church Street was sold. Hikurangi’s relationship with Freemasonry dates back to 1904, when local members would meet on the Friday nearest the full moon of each month. Ceremony, symbolism and regalia are important aspects of Masonic meetings. This detail of a photograph which hangs in the Hikurangi Museum shows some of the 48 Loyal Hikurangi Masonic Lodge Members, a year after its inception. The first Master of the Hikurangi Lodge was Alexander Mearns Rust - headmaster of the Hikurangi School from 1902 – 1923. Alexander was the grandfather of Yvonne Rust - an esteemed potter and educator who established the Arts Quarry on Rust Ave in the 1980s. Freemasonry arrived in NZ in 1837, but its origins can be traced right back to the Middle Ages. Their logo and symbols reflect the tools of the craftsmen – particularly the stonemasons who built cathedrals and castles in Europe. It was necessary for these masons to be skilled in geometry, arithmetic and engineering. They formed guilds (trade associations) which were established to protect the skills and secrets of their trade and to pass their knowledge on to apprentices. We see this history in the compasses and square of the Freemasons logo. The aprons which Freemasons wear similarly stem from this history, albeit today they are less functional but more symbolic – these decorative aprons a reminder of the importance of leading a productive life, and to labour for the good of others. Fraternity - brotherhood and living a life that is honest, true, and dignified are central tenets within the Masonic Lodge. As are being charitable, having a strong work ethic and moral code. Our local Freemasons worked hard towards supporting others, helping our community in many ways through fundraising to ensure access to education and medical treatment. Even though they will no longer meet out in Hikurangi, they will continue to meet in Kamo and are still welcoming members. We are thankful for all their help over the years.

If you are interested in joining the Freemasons- please see: https://freemasonsnz.org/join

Please visit the Hikurangi Museum to view the aforementioned photograph and examples of Masonic regalia.

Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade

Hi Hikurangi

As it starts to get colder, we remind everyone of winter fire safety. Make sure you have had your chimney swept, always use a fire guard with an open fire

Put all ashes in a metal bucket and pour water over the bucket, ashes can remain hot for 5 days. Have your electric blanket checked by a qualified electrician, make sure that it lays flat on the bed, that the cords and controls are not twisted.

Remember the heater metre rule, keep a clear metre around fireplaces and heaters, do not cover or store things on top of them.

In a real house fire, you have less than three minutes to escape. So give yourself a warning. Install working smoke alarms today. You are four times more likely to survive a house fire if you have a working smoke alarm. Need advice? Message us on Facebook, come see us on Mondays from 6.30pm or visit fireandemergency.nz This month you may see a fire truck out and about in the weekend, this is for 3 of our members and others from neighbouring brigades doing their pump course being held in and around Hika, doing various getting water in and out of the truck. This is a 4 day course held over 2 weekends

Need help or advice you can contact us on Facebook, Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade.
